When you sell out Rams Head On Stage and want to return, you get a bigger venue and bring a bigger show! Today, we're laughing again with Paul Mecurio, who will bring his critically acclaimed show Permission to Speak to Maryland Hall on November 23rd. Unlike his prior sold-out stand-up act, this production (and it IS a production) involved the audience sharing stories that are unwittingly (or perhaps wittingly) hilarious. Ultimately, we all have much more in common than we realize, and Paul brings it out peppered with his stand-up. The show is produced by the incredible Frank Oz (Yoda, Muppets), with animations by JJ Sedelmeier (Beavis and Butthead), Paul, and you! After the recent election, don't we all need a night of laughter and coming together? Paul and Permission to Speak will be in Annapolis at Maryland Hall for a single show on Saturday, November 23, 2024, and this will be a show to remember! Today, we get a bit of a preview! What prevents you from speaking up?When you were younger, what was your experience when you spoke up? Were you heard, or were you silenced, ignored, or punished? The echoes of earlier wounds often shape our ability to speak up. Our ability to speak up is often influenced by the burden of past experiences, whether it's in meetings, public forums, or one-on-one conversations, speaking up can feel like a significant risk when past relational traumas resurface.Even the most confident leaders may carry fears of rejection, judgment, or failure, stemming from previous experiences of not being heard or valued. We may worry about being misunderstood or feel that our words lack significance.Embracing your voice, even in the face of uncertainty, is a transformative act. It's a journey towards building more courage and leading in alignment with your values.Speaking with grounded confidence isn't just about exerting authority; it's about fostering trust, connection, and respect within yourself and with those you lead.Today's guest lives the principles she teaches on speaking up and showing up with more power, especially for those who hold identities outside of dominant cultural norms. Sometimes junior officers ask senior officers, "Permission to speak freely, sir?" ie: "Do you really want to hear what I have to say?" Similarly, we ask that same question of God. Fortunately, He answers YES.We are to have a confidence in the willing ear of God. He's given us access and knowledge so that we can be doing something: plainly, even boldly, speaking before Him.If you knew that God really heard you today, what would you ask for?Does your conversations with God in quantity and quality demonstrate that you are heard by God?Bewithme.us share on whatever platform you are receiving this on.

The voice you have today is not the same voice you were born with. The things you experience and the media you're exposed to, all contribute to how you sound and frame what your idea of a powerful voice “should” sound like. But when you step out of the parameters set by culture, and abandon the idea of sounding “professional” you will discover that true power in your voice. Today's episode is a revolution in how to think about your voice with Samara Bay, author of “Permission to Speak”. We nerd out on redefining what power sounds like, why other people's voices and words impact your own voice, and what you can do to shift that narrative. Speaking with our “heart voice”, we dare you to consider what it would be like to have a different, more empowering relationship with your voice. Listen in as we break down the new sound of power including: How to authentically show up and be taken seriously Owning the words coming out of your mouth The importance of audaciously choosing to sound like you Links worth exploring from the episode: Samara's book “Permission to Speak” - https://bookshop.org/p/books/permission-to-speak-how-to-change-what-power-sounds-like-starting-with-you-samara-bay/18485502?ean=9780593238684 We Are The Music Makers Poem by Arthur O'Shaughnessy - https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/54933/ode- MoveOn.Org - https://front.moveon.org/ Samara's podcast episode with Ilyse Hogue - https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-permission-to-speak-57847257/episode/how-to-inspire-hope-with-ilyse-69173429/ Samara's podcast episode with Sarah Jones - https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-permission-to-speak-57847257/episode/sarah-jones-63057476/ Brene Brown's episode on amour - https://brenebrown.com/podcast/brene-on-armored-versus-daring-leadership-part-1-of-2/ Mary's podcast episode 55 on How to Find Your Podcasting Voice: Why Authenticity is 100 Times Better Than a Traditional Radio Voice - https://www.organizedsound.ca/how-to-find-your-podcasting-voice-why-authenticity-is-100-times-better-than-a-traditional-radio-voice-episode-55/ Engage with Samara Bay: Website - https://www.samarabay.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/samarabay/ Connect with Mary! How comfortable are you with your own voice? How likely are you to say what's on your mind?Samara Bay, the author of the brand-new book Permission to Speak, is on a mission to change what power sounds like. I found Samara because one of my favorite podcasters was on Samara's show. I then binged her back catalog and started recommending her show to everyone I worked with. One of those folks then turned around and told Samara I had shouted her out! We've been fangirling together ever since. I first had Samara on the podcast during the Self-Help, LLC series (Episode 397: Bad Usage). But her book has just hit the shelves so I took that as an excuse to schedule another chat and bring it to you as a bonus "mini" episode. Enjoy!Footnotes: Buy Permission to Speak at Bookshop.org (or wherever you buy books!) Find out more about Samara Follow Samara on Instagram YellowHouse.Media ★ Support this podcast ★

I'm excited to share an interview I had with two amazing active duty Sailors , Damon and Damo from the Podcast Permission to Speak Freely, where they share sea stories and have unfiltered conversations about current events, policies, and everyday life as a service member. It's not everyday you get to have an unfiltered conversation with two black senior enlisted, especially as a civilian, so I thought it would be great for us to fellowship on the show and talk through some of our perspectives about leadership, race, and other topics we're interested in.
