Florida native McCoy Gibbs made the move to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 18 to pursue a Music Business degree at Belmont University. He not only earned that degree, but also made lifelong connections and friendships while falling in love with the city, energy, and opportunity that is Nashville. The crazy part is that Gibbs didn't really learn to play drums until his college years. For this natural musician, drums and rhythm came naturally and he found his groove, literally. After college, Gibbs emerged as a drummer while playing with pop/rock band Hot Celle Rae. He then went on to become an independent drummer to soak in all the music he could. During this time he met tons of musicians, bands and artists, cut his teeth on the grind of Broadway bars and “honky tonks,” and jumped in a van for a random show in Montana. He loved every minute of it. In 2013, his hard work paid off when Gibbs successfully auditioned for CMA-nominated Duo of the Year, Love and Theft, and hit the road for the busiest year of his life thus far. It hasn't slowed down for him since. From touring, live TV performances, music videos and award shows, Gibbs has kept himself quite busy. Gibbs is currently playing with 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina, and continues to find other ways to fill in the occasional off day with sessions, shows, and housework. If there is an example of hard work, passion, and preparation paying off, McCoy Gibbs is that example. In Lee's own words: I was born and raised in Concord, NC. Just Northeast of Charlottle, it was a town of 25,000 back then. As long as I can remember, music was around. Whether it be the turntables or 8 tracks; where my older brothers played rock and roll of the 60s & 70s, Dad listened to older country artists or Mom's Pontiac Bonneville, which seemed to always have the hits playing through it's car stereo from either 61AM Big Ways, 95FM WROQ or 1100 WBT-AM…Music was always a comforting companion. Not coming from a particularly musical family other than them playing the radio, the drum bug came from the next door neighbor playing and then taking it from there. I was playing with records by 8-9 years old; began school band in 7th grade with the natural progression through high school playing in marching, jazz and symphonic bands throughout. Since music was not viewed in my family as something you pursued as a career, I studied English Literature & Writing at Pfeiffer University until my senior year in 1990-91 when long time friend and a musical mentor, Rick Lee, called and said, "I'm forming a new band and you're the drummer." This was the beginnings of my music career and the 2019 Carolina Beach Music Hall Of Fame band, Too Much Sylvia. After leaving TMS in 1994, I played with a few different bands out of Charlotte and all around the East Coast through 1996. In September 1996, a weeklong trip to Nashville, TN put the hook in and I moved to Music City on January 11, 1997. Fortunately, I got club and road work pretty quickly while learning constantly along the way. The idea was to make a living while seeing the world and that plan came to fruition over the years backing artists like Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Heidi Newfield, Kelly Pickler, Loverboy, Kendell Marvel and, now, Hank Williams Jr. Also, to be able to play and share time with some of the finest musicians & people along the way has just been magic. It's a ride I can't get off of...Nor do I want to. Along with time on the road with Hank Jr., I offer drum/percussion tracks to any clients out of the "Boom Boom Drum Room", do club/showcase/session work around town and spend time caring for my family. It's never boring and music is STILL a comforting companion. Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!! October 16, 2023The Funny Thing About YogaWe Talk Nonsense, then Get Serious about Sequencing Episode No. 36The title says It all: this episode begins with casual banter that spirals into a lot of nonsensical talk between Giana and Bradshaw. It's a conversation that paints a clear picture of their dynamic, which often involves Giana trying to lay out the foundation and Bradshaw bouncing to the beat of his own drum. After chatting about therapy, water aerobics, nudity, language, conjugal visits, gonorrhea, and vaginas they finally take a deep breath and focus. They get serious about sequencing and talk about why It is so important to have a plan and blueprint. They also share really great advice, especially for new teachers, and emphasize the importance of simplicity and consistency. The end with a game of cancel, commit explore, and share funny etiquette and ego stories. Please share this episode with friends, and don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe. It's Episode 272 of Defenders of the Banc, now heard in Fiji! You know what they don't have much of in Fiji? TURF! LAFC falls to yet another inferior club on turf, this time in Charlotte. Listen as we recap and rant about the road loss. LAFC played a dismal first half, falling behind 1-0 after a series of turnovers and not doing a whole lot on the offensive end. When was the last time you heard of an LAFC club completing 90 passes in a half?Just after the hour mark, Dolo would make his first move, and it was a good one. Subbing on Olivera, Fufu, and Acosta seemed to get the ball moving, and soon after, Super Mario Gonzalez would open his account after a great pass from Denis. The lead was short-lived, however, as a set of Charlotte subs had their desired effect. The Rangers legend, Scott Arfield, pounced on a rebound after a solid save by J-Mac, and LAFC found themselves down a goal yet again. Despite a series of solid efforts by Denis and Olivera, it was too little, too late, as LAFC falls in Charlotte. Also on this episode, Filly takes us on a trip through Fiji, Scarf rants about our upcoming gauntlet in September, and the boys are waking up very early for eggs tomorrow. Good luck, El Segundo, and enjoy Episode 272!
Substitute teachers are hard to come by these days. When you find a good one, you want to do everything you can to make sure they return in the future. One bad experience might scare even the best of subs away! The truth is, your sub plans are the key factor in determining how their day will unfold. So, what should you include in your sub plans, and what is okay to leave out? Having written my fair share of sub plans over the years, I thought I knew the answer to this question. My plans were extremely thorough, especially when it came to the math lesson. I made sure anyone who walked into my room could easily understand the lesson and teach it well. While that was (and still is) important, I was overlooking something that was equally as important. It wasn't until I spent a year as a substitute teacher that I realized what my sub plans were missing. In this episode, I share simple ways to set your sub up for success, what to include in your plans, and what is okay to leave out. I also share my favorite parts about subbing, what surprised me the most, and a fun freebie to help motivate your students when you are away. In addition, you'll learn about one of my favorite place value games in the Teaching Tip of the Week, Resources Mentioned: Classroom A vs. Classroom B Super for the Sub Tickets To view the show notes with the full transcript, head to https://krejcicreations.com/episode4. A deep dive into programming. | Why do people hate running? | Are dumbbells enough for fitness? | Subbing jump rope for running. | How to stay fit as a new parent.
(Today's episode is a re-air from 2021, chosen in recognition of Fathers Day.) It's time for some coffee with a splash of multi-generational wisdom. Joining us today are our dad and our grandpa, aka “Pop.” These two bring a deep, wide reservoir of experience. Pop started with Messer Construction all the way back in 1954, in part of a college co-op program. He moved on to the position of project manager and eventually senior project executive. As he tells us, though, he was just interested in building buildings. Among the larger projects Pop worked on are Millett Hall at the University of Miami in Ohio and Sander Hall at the University of Cincinnati. (Here's the video he mentions of the Sander Hall demolition.) Dad started in construction the day after his last high school baseball game. In 1980, he moved his young family to Florida. A while later he Dad started ABSI and ran it until Eddie took over recently. Pop talks us through the specs for the Millet Hall at the University of Miami in Ohio. The basketball arena was in this building, and also classrooms. This project took two and a half years. Millett Hall was built on the site of an old golf course. Pop talks us through additional specs, including truss assemblies, 150-ton cranes, and a project-management staff much smaller than what we see these days. RFIs? Well, there were none. If there was a question, the relevant parties talked on the phone. Monthly meetings also helped head off problems. Distance between architects and engineers–there was almost none. They were partners. Dad shares about how things had changed by the 70s and 80s. He witnessed the change from self-performing to bid-build. Subbing had begun on some of Pop's jobs in the late 60s but hadn't really taken hold until the late 70s. As this change took place, the burden of liability began to blur. The change was propelled, however, by the need to keep specialty crews busy. We discuss the training required for project management. Pop learned by doing, so he had a headstart on managers coming out of college with only classroom experience. Pop shares about his bold prediction that he'd move from newbie to superintendent in five years, even though the company owner said it usually took 15. Pop proved him wrong, after establishing a reputation with other decision-makers. We discuss mindset. Eddie recalls Pop's adage “Make it a winner.” Pop recalls working on over 150 jobs, and he says, “If you can't enjoy what you're doing, do something else.” Dad shares about Pop coming home from building at work just to build more at home (after a quick “brown pop,” aka beer). Dad and Eddie discuss tensions between architects, engineers, and designers turning into trust built over time. We discuss the fabric of expertise and insight that grows with generational experience. Dad's megaphone message: Most of the mess in the industry can be traced back to design. We're so specialized that nobody knows anything about anything. We're too fragmented. Pop's megaphone message: Family matters most. If you can take that family mindset into the workplace, it will make all the difference. Jade and her Husband Sam married in 2007, one week after college graduation. They had $280K just in student loans! In addition, they also had credit cards, two cars we couldn't afford, and a small townhome to round it out. But in 2008, they started listening to The Ramsey Show and learned all about the Baby Steps and what we needed to do to become debt-free. It took them a while to shake their old habits, but once they truly got fired up, they did whatever they could to earn more money—from substitute teaching, to teaching voice lessons, to designing websites, to hosting jet ski tours, to working at a vinyl tint and lettering garage. They even house hacked and sacrificed personal space by getting roommates. Jade and Sam eventually made their way on the Ramsey show to do their debt free scream and she could have never imagined that she would one day become a Ramsey Personality.
