For decades, buying a home was seen as the cornerstone of financial security in Canada. But with Toronto and Vancouver homes priced at 10 to 12 times the average family income, more Canadians are renting well into their 30s and 40s not by choice, but by necessity. Senior Desjardins economist Kari Norman discusses her recent study on the rise of the permanent renter, exploring the data behind affordability, the trade-offs between renting and owning, the lack of family-sized rental housing in major cities, and what a 27-year-old saving today should really be thinking about. Enjoy this special feed drop of our sister show "In This Economy?!" Following a negative performance for economic growth in the first quarter of 2026, the Canadian economy fell into what's been described as a "technical recession". While the headline was pounced on for political debate, with such a small decline (just a 0.1% contraction) and some parts of the economy still doing quite well, economists are downplaying the significance of all this recession talk. Nevertheless, under the weight of the trade war with the U.S., there are a lot of questions around the recent signals by the Bank of Canada even talking about hiking interest rates and whether the central bank will be changing its message to the markets next week with it's policy announcement on June 10th. Host Mike Eppel speaks with Royce Mendes, the managing director and head of macro strategy at Desjardins, about this so-called "recession", and what the consequences of reading too much into it might be.

Brian Crombie is joined by Kari Norman of Desjardins to examine Canada's housing affordability crisis. The discussion focuses on rising home prices in major cities such as Toronto and Vancouver, and the growing gap between established asset owners and younger Canadians struggling to enter the market. Topics include development charges, taxation, zoning and land constraints, immigration pressures, limited housing supply, and rising youth unemployment. The conversation highlights concerns that long-term affordability challenges could reshape Canada's middle class and economic mobility.

Quebec's commercial real estate market has changed fast, and the old "local only" playbook does not hold up anymore. Louis Bergeron, partner at HPDG, joins Axel Monsaingeon to unpack what appraisers are seeing before the headlines: how developers now chase opportunities across the province, why 2024 felt frozen, and what shifted in 2025 to bring buyers and sellers closer together. Louis also shares the real story behind PDG's roots coming out of Desjardins, how the firm grew through acquisitions and mergers, and why a merger has to be "1 + 1 = 3" or it is not worth doing. They dig into PDG's full-service model from valuation and property management to tax appeals, litigation support, and expropriation tied to major projects like the REM and the Blue Line extension. Louis closes with what PDG is building for 2026, including a refreshed brand and a bigger push to share market insights, plus why comparing cap rates is often harder than people think. No one likes checking their credit score and seeing a hit to the rating - even the Canadian government.Credit rating agencies are bracing for the upcoming November 4th federal budget, and with a lack of fiscal updates since the last federal budget under the Trudeau government, economists aren't quite sure what they should expect when it comes to the deficit. So just how deep could the red ink run? And will the minority federal government receive the backing from any of the opposition parties to get it passed through the House?Host Mike Eppel speaks to Randall Bartlett, Deputy Chief Economist at Desjardins to discuss what former-banker-turned-Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has up his sleeve for the upcoming budget, and what he plans to do about a potentially ominously large deficit. On Prophecy Radio episode #143, Karen and Kristen catch up on some news odds and ends, including some new Percy Jackson and the Olympians character posters. They also discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 39 and 40, including their favorite moments and a few very significant twists and turns. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:24:11) Character posters, ya'll! A trio poster that might be a repeat, but just in case you haven't seen it yet. Rick took a photo with our new Zoe Nightshade and her significantly annotated book. These kids are getting to do all kinds of stunts. Steph Lurie dressed up to put Mark and Rick on trial at the Texas Book Festival Happy Birthday, Virginia Kull! The Red Pyramid discussion (00:30:50) Mini recap, in case you need a refresher. Let's talk about chapter 39. We take a minute to coo over Rick's narrative style in this book. Zia confounds us with some pertinent but infuriating advice. Set's secret name is underwhelming, but we discuss how that might have been inevitable. Isis warns Sadie Sadie's visions could have each been their own chapter. For sure. Who will sit on these 3 thrones? A touching father/daughter moment to ease the pain. The tale of the four Kanes. Her mother saw what was coming, her father did what he had to do, and now Sadie and Carter must see it all through. Isis and Sadie merge and we get our rainbow-warrior-goddess moment. Favorite lines and Favorite moments Time for the penultimate chapter discussion! Sadie's dual vision might be one of the cooler story-telling devices I've read in a long time. Time for a trip to the capital! The real enemy is finally brought into the light. Sadie and Carter have a moment. Two twists in a row really show how much has been going on that we couldn't see earlier in the story. Set was being used just like he was puppeteering Amos. The enemy of my enemy might just come in useful later on, so we might have to spare them. This Zia twist is one we definitely didn't see coming. Desjardins is pissed and astonished at the Kane's willpower. Favorite lines and Favorite moments Feedback (01:32:10) Longtime listener David Ludwig shares some of the Court of the Dead book tour fun from Denver! Here's that cocoa puff video in case you are interested! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 144, where we'll wrap up our discussion of The Red Pyramid with chapter 41, as well as get you up to date on more Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news. On Prophecy Radio episode #142, Karen and Kristen dissect the latest Percy Jackson and the Olympians news, plus the release of The Court of the Dead by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. They also discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 37 and 38, including their favorite moments and what they think will happen next. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:10:37) The Court of the Dead by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro is officially out in the world! Did you get any of the special editions? (We definitely did.) Did you see the pictures and videos of Rick signing books and Funkos? Leah turned 16 last month! Do these Percy Jackson and the Olympians behind-the-scenes clips mean we'll be getting another BTS documentary?? We go through a slightly older Entertainment Weekly article to discuss the next Senior Year Adventures book. When can we expect the third and final Senior Year book to come out? Rick is strictly a middle grade author, and we're cool with that. What other gods would make for good series fodder a la Trials of Apollo? Other character-centric books are still on the table, and boy do we want them! The Red Pyramid discussion (00:29:14) All right, let's refresh our brains on what happened last time. Good. Now we can jump into The Red Pyramid chapter 37. Why does Set keep flickering between forms? We've really come around on Amos since we learned the truth. Set is SO sassy, and we're kind of here for it. Horus still wants to take over Carter's body, and Carter is still telling him no. Uh, where the heck is Nephthys? Sadie protecc. Thank goodness Carter figures out what Zia meant when she told him not to resist. Carter turns into a total badass! Favorite lines and favorite scenes. All right, time to jump into The Red Pyramid chapter 38. Carter having fun fighting and beating up on Set is slightly concerning. Why do they BOTH bleed black? They're about to bring down the house, so Carter tricks Set into becoming a fruit bat and then drags him outside the pyramid. Will Sadie be able to free their dad from the throne and his sarcophagus? We kind of already knew how to defeat Set, but he really lays it out for Carter. Did we feel bad about what happened to Desjardins? We totally did not expect Set to put the capstone on top of the pyramid. Sadie is a freaking rainbow, y'all! What name could Sadie have shouted? We wanted to read the next chapter SO BAD! But we discuss our favorite lines and favorite moments instead. Feedback (01:09:31) Ensign_Davies and Maria write in to tell us what they think of The Court of the Dead. Caoimhe is super excited about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, and she let's us know one of our previous episodes was missing links. That's all fixed now! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 143, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 39 and 40, as well as get you up to date on more Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news. Pierre Desjardins is the cofounder of C12, a Paris-based quantum computing hardware startup that specializes in carbon nanotube-based spin qubits. Notably, Pierre founded the company alongside his twin brother, Mathieu, making them the only twin-led deep-tech startups that we know of! Pierre's journey is unconventional—he is a rare founder in quantum hardware without a PhD, drawing instead on engineering and entrepreneurial experience. The episode dives into what drew him to quantum computing and the pivotal role COVID-19 played in catalyzing his career shift from consulting to quantum technology.C12's Technology and Unique AngleC12 focuses on developing high-performance qubits using single-wall carbon nanotubes. Unlike companies centered on silicon or germanium spin qubits, C12 fabricates carbon nanotubes, tests them for impurities, and then assembles them on silicon chips as a final step. The team exclusively uses isotopically pure carbon-12 to minimize magnetic and nuclear spin noise, yielding a uniquely clean environment for electron confinement. This yields ultra-low charge noise and enables the company to build highly coherent qubits with remarkable material purity.Key Technical InnovationsSpin-Photon Coupling: C12's system stands out for driving spin qubits using microwave photons, drawing inspiration from superconducting qubit architectures. This enables the implementation of a “quantum bus”—a superconducting interconnect that allows long-range coupling between distant qubits, sidestepping the scaling bottleneck of nearest-neighbor architectures.Addressable Qubits: Each carbon nanotube qubit can be tuned on or off the quantum bus by manipulating the double quantum dot confinement, providing flexible connectivity and the ability to maximize coherence in a memory mode.Stability and Purity: Pierre emphasizes that C12's suspended architecture dramatically reduces charge noise and results in exceptional stability, with minimal calibration drift, over years-long measurement campaigns—a stark contrast with many superconducting platforms.Recent MilestonesC12 celebrated its fifth anniversary and recently demonstrated the first qubit operation on their platform. The company achieved ultra-long coherence times for spin qubits coupled via a quantum bus, publishing these results in *Nature*. The next milestone is demonstrating two-qubit gates mediated by microwave photons—a development that could set a new benchmark for both C12 and the wider quantum computing industry.Challenges and OutlookC12's current focus is scaling up from single-qubit demonstrations to multi-qubit gates with long-range connectivity, a crucial step toward error correction and practical algorithms. Pierre notes the rapid evolution of error-correcting codes, remarking that some codes they are now working on did not exist two years ago. The interview closes with an eye on the race to demonstrate long-distance quantum gates, with Pierre hoping C12 will make industry headlines before larger competitors like IBM.Notable Quotes“The more you dig into this technology, the more you understand why this is just the way to build a quantum computer.”“We have the lowest charge noise compared to any kind of spin qubit—this is because of our suspended architecture.”“What we introduced is the concept of a quantum bus… really the only way to scale spin qubits.”Episode ThemesEntrepreneurship in deep tech without a traditional research backgroundTechnical deep dive on carbon nanotube spin qubits and quantum bus architectureMaterials science as the foundation of scalable quantum hardwareThe importance of coherence, noise reduction, and tunable architectures in quantum system designThe dynamic evolution of error correction and industry competitionListeners interested in cutting-edge hardware, quantum startup journeys, or the science behind scalable qubit platforms will find this episode essential. Pierre provides unique clarity on why C12's approach offers both conceptual and practical advantages for the future of quantum computing,

The Net Promoter System Podcast – Customer Experience Insights from Loyalty Leaders
Episode 253: Desjardins thought its cooperative roots made it member-first by default. Then members started leaving. Desjardins is a 125-year-old financial co-op based in Quebec. It has deep community ties and a proud history. But that pride masked a painful truth: Members no longer saw it as customer-centric. The organization believed its cooperative structure guaranteed loyalty—until low NPS scores and rising member churn showed otherwise. Mathieu Staniulis and Séverine Clairet recount how Desjardins confronted its own mythology, restructured governance, and began treating feedback as a system, not a score. Desjardins' wake-up call came in the early 2010s. Despite its co-op status, members said the experience felt disjointed. Branches operated as near-independent entities. “It was really difficult to see the full scope of our company because we were presenting ourselves as different companies,” says Mathieu. CEO Guy Cormier led a bold move: unifying the 17 siloed organizations within Desjardins under a single governance structure. But structure alone wasn't enough. Internally, CX, risk, and profit still pulled in different directions. As Mathieu puts it, “People in charge of customer experience only talk about customer experience and NPS. People in P&L ownership talk about their performance—their bottom line. How can they improve their performance, especially on the financial metrics? And then you have the risk people trying to manage risk and deal with regulators always bringing new regulations, especially in the financial industry. And I believe we have to find a way to work together to balance customer experience, efficiency or financial metrics, and risk management.” The challenge became about integrating those forces to make balanced, member-first decisions—without sacrificing performance. Now Desjardins faces a new frontier: recreating intimacy in a digital world. Transactions moved online. But financial advice—the core of trust and loyalty—remains unsolved. The question, Mathieu says, is urgent and unanswered: “How do we bring advice into a digital world?” Guests: Mathieu Staniulis, Vice President, Products, Solutions & Digital, and Chief Transformation Officer | Séverine Clairet, Vice President Customer Experience & Marketing Strategy, Desjardins Host: Rob Markey, Partner, Bain & Company Give us feedback: Customer Confidential Podcast Feedback Send us a note: Contact Rob Time-Stamped Topics 00:01 – A logout button reveals blind spots in member experience 00:04 – Desjardins' founding story: community aid in a kitchen 00:06 – “Member-owned” in theory vs. practice across 17 silos 00:08 – How Guy Cormier unified Desjardins under one governance model 00:09 – Why NPS lagged despite a strong co-op identity 00:12 – “The S means system”: transforming how feedback drives action 00:15 – Balancing CX, P&L, and risk without silos 00:18 – The call center debate: cost now vs. loyalty later 00:20 – Journey teams as a model for cross-functional accountability 00:21 – Digital did the easy part, so what comes next? 00:22 – Can “digital” be intimate? The next frontier for co-ops Notable Quotes [15:00] “It was really difficult to see the full scope of our company because we were presenting ourselves as different companies. … We had to pivot from working together, but in silos.” [16:00] “We believe we're member-focused, but we were lagging in NPS. We were also losing membership, so we had to pivot and change all of that, changing the way we look internally at our performance, raising NPS as the top KPI for our company.” [16:00] “That's the equation of NPS. Buying more, referring more, and staying longer mean more profitability. For P&L, it means better risk management, because there's a tendency to lower your risk when you have loyal customers with you. So you have to bring that all together.” [17:00] “We were very proud of Desjardins, especially in the Quebec market. In some lines of products, we have almost 40% market share. You will see a branch of Desjardins in every town. It's deep in our roots.” Additional Resources Read Bain's case study, From Laggard to Leader: Desjardins Evolves Member Centricity for the Digital Age: https://www.bain.com/client-results/from-laggard-to-leader-desjardins-evolves-member-centricity-for-the-digital-age/
