Send us a textRaquel Rodriguez is a multifaceted artist from Los Angeles who has made a name for herself by continually pushing her creative boundaries and navigating the music industry on her own terms. Raised in LA, Raquel was always recognized for her talent, often being labeled "the singer," yet her artistry goes far beyond that. As a singer, producer, songwriter, and performer, she blends her diverse talents to create a sound that is uniquely her own.At the heart of Raquel's work is a commitment to authenticity. She thrives on blending personal experiences with broader societal narratives, offering a fresh perspective on womanhood, self-worth, and independence. Deeply passionate about creating art that resonates personally while challenging stereotypes, her music is an honest reflection of who she is—a fusion of soulful vocals, live instrumentation, and modern production that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Known for her soulful vocals, innovative production, and magnetic stage presence, Raquel crafts music that is as heartfelt as it is groovy.Throughout her career, Raquel has stayed true to her vision and sound. Her breakout studio release, The 310, inspired by her LA roots, features the hit single Mile High, which garnered over 5 million streams and solidified her presence in the R&B scene. In 2021, she followed up with Sweet Side, her independently released debut album that showcased exciting collaborations with the likes of MXXWLL, Matt Johnson (Jamiroquai), and Amber Navran (Moonchild). With over 25 million streams, Sweet Side continues to resonate with fans worldwide, becoming a staple on playlists across the globe. In October 2024, Raquel released her most personal work yet, Housewife, a project that challenges traditional stereotypes of womanhood and draws parallels between the overlooked labor of housewives and independent artists alike. The album fuses her love for music with her newfound passion for cooking, including a collection of her favorite recipes. Collaborating with familiar producers and songwriters like SammyB, Jess Best, Nigel Hall, Amber Navran, and Dux, along with new contributors like Misha, Housewife blends live musicianship with modern electronic elements, further refining her distinct sound. Beyond her projects, Raquel's journey as an independent artist is a testament to her perseverance and dedication. She works tirelessly to bring her vision to life, whether in her home studio or in the kitchen, nurturing connections with her community. Raquel believes in defining success on her own terms—embracing balance, creativity, and joy in both her personal and professional life. With a growing fanbase and an independent team that competes with the best of them, Raquel continues to prove that real fulfillment comes from authenticity. Her artistry, much like her life, is a celebration of individuality, resilience, and the freedom to forge your own path.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Nick Campbell plays the electric bass. He was born and raised in Los Angeles and like most members of the city's bountiful music scene he spent the majority of his youth in the annals of music education. It was here that Campbell developed his unique penchant for superimposing triadic patterns over static harmony (commonly referred to as “getting modal”).You may have seen him playing bass as a sideman with (but not limited to): Pomplamoose, Scary Pockets, Charlie Puth, Vulfpeck, Meghan Trainor, Raquel Rodriguez, Nigel Hall, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher, Lunchmoney Lewis, Michael Mayo and Moonchild and as a leader (or co-leader) with the bands: Shrek Is Love and Bear Attack. He currently writes music under the name “Nick Campbell Destroys.” Some people think that his music sounds like a deranged amalgam of Industrial Jazz-Funk and too many tri-tone substitutions, but he thinks it just sounds like Nihilism. Nick released his debut EP "Lo-fi Bass Music For Quarantine" on August 21st, 2020, which is a collection of arrangements of standards made in his bedroom during the Covid-19 lockdown. Keep an eye out for his debut LP of all original music sometime in the next year. Also, plz respect his art.

Welcome virtuosic bassist NATE EDGAR of THE NTH POWER to Ep.058! Nate is a helluva player, and he takes us inside his process, influences, mindset, and intentions as a bassist, band member, brother, and low-end medicine man. Heaping slabs of musicology with a healthy serving of humanity. Nate Dawg doesn't do very many interviews - certainly not lengthy, super-personal purges - so this ep is a real treat, and an emotional sledgehammer. A gentleman, scholar, subsonic sorcerer, and servant of the song,  Buckle up fam, we're goin IN! Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Nate Edgar. 3:00 - new sponsor! THE LEGION OF BLOOM 5:00 - Upful Update 10:00 - Introducing NATE EDGAR 16:00 - Interview - NATE DAWG We hop in the wayback machine to discuss Nate's roots in New Hampshire, from nascent backpack rap steez to a teenager runnin' away on Dead tour, playing in newgrass bands or working as a garbage man. Boston/Wally's/NE jam scene back in the day, learning tuba to get into college, and other random historical minutiae. In a touching, insightful segment, Nate takes us through his experience working with pioneering American reggae band John Brown's Body, and expounds on the legacy of his dear friend, JBB bassist, the late Scott Palmer.  Naturally, we dig DEEP on all things The Nth Power, past, present and future. Ruminations on his bandmates as family, the core trio perservering through adversity, the inherent spirituality in their music. Plus reflections on collaborating with Weedie Braimah, Nigel Hall, Rob Marscher, and the friendship, mentorship, kindness and unbelievable talent of the late, great Kofi Burbridge. We unpack Nth's unparalleled tribute mojo: from Earth, Wind & Power to Bob Marley to Steely Dan, High Sierra's Gospel According to Nth, and a little teaser for Cool Cool Cool just around the bend at Brooklyn Comes Alive.  MY MAN NATE. This week I'm chatting to Los Angeles native, electric bass player, Nick Campbell who is reinventing the jazz genre for this generation. Flipping traditional conventions on their head, Nick's unique penchant for superimposing triadic patterns over static harmony has brought a modern twist to “getting modal,” creating a distinctive yet eccentric sound of his own. Mirroring the musical inclusivity of his work, Nick has taken the stage with music artists of all genres. From traditional jazz bands to pop music sensations, he can be seen performing with Pomplamoose, Scary Pockets, Charlie Puth, Vulfpeck, Meghan Trainor, Raquel Rodriguez, Nigel Hall, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher, Michael Mayo and Moonchild (to name a few) and composing original music with bands such as Shrek Is Love and Bear Attack. Episode 043 welcomes DC-born, NOLA-based NIGEL HALL (Lettuce, Jon Cleary, ex-The Nth Power) to the show for an hour-plus Vulcan Mind Probe. Nige has been a friend for about a dozen years, and I've written extensively about his musical exploits, so this convergence was a very long time in the making. The extremely gifted, Grammy-nominated keyboardist/vocalist - singer/songwriter keeps a lot of artistic irons in the fire. Nigel's dropping sophomore solo LP Spiritual on May 14, 2021, a stunning sojourn into Soulquarian waters co-produced by DJ Harrison and backed by members of Butcher Brown.    @9mins- Introducing NIGEL HALL / @16mins-"Wake Me" Nigel Hall / @20mins - Interview  In a wide-ranging convo, topics include: what's the latest in New Orleans , we get the 411 on Nigel's musical partnership with NOLA-based Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. His motivations and inspirations behind the forthcoming Spiritual, as Nigel reveals a bit about his process and the project's native tongues. We unpack his role over the years with Lettuce, and how the keyboard chair and his contributions to the band have evolved over time. Quick detours to George Duke & J Dilla, with a funny Suwannee flashback or two to boot.  Naturally, we had to get into his time in The Nth Power, and he offers poignant, impassioned reflections that gave me chills. So did his defiant, righteous anger as a Black father to a pair of sons entering young adulthood. So many rabbit holes, with many stones left unturned. Super proud of this powerful powwow with one of the greatest to ever do it; a spiritual awakening of the soulful variety. Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

My guest this week is Nigel Hall-an amazing singer/keyboard player/multi-instrumentalist.Born and raised in Washington D.C. and currently residing in New Orleans, LA. Lettuce's keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall is an accomplished musician steeped in Gospel tradition, as well as classic soul, funk, hip hop and R&B. Hall was discovered by Lettuce co-founder Ryan Zoidis around 2007, who invited him to Brooklyn to meet Eric Krasno and record with jazz band Soulive. Nigel was a huge fan of Soulive and this was a major moment for his young career. At that same time Hall connected with Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch and The Roots drummer/founder Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and soon began appearing onstage with Soulive, Lettuce, and Royal Family affiliates. Nigel Hall was first nominated for a Grammy for his work on Ledesi's 2009 LP Turn Me Loose. In 2011, Hall decamped to New Orleans to immerse himself in the Crescent City's musical heritage. It was in NOLA where Hall was drafted by Jon Cleary for his band, and appears on the NOLA pianist's Grammy-winning LP Go-Go Juice. Hall toured with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, John Scofield, and briefly with Tedeschi-Trucks Band, before he was chosen as a keyboardist/vocalist for Warren Haynes Band. Hall appears on Warren Haynes Band's studio album Man in Motion and live LP Live at the Moody Theater, released on Stax Records. Hall appears on the Grammy nominated Family Dinner Vol.1 from Snarky Puppy, as well as Grammy-nominated album from New Orleans own Cha Wa. Hall has also appeared onstage with Marcus King, Pretty Lights, Dave Matthews Band, and more. In 2012, Hall co-founded The Nth Power, a funk/soul/R&B band with former Beyonce drummer Nikki Glaspie. In 2015 Hall departed The Nth Power and soon released Nigel Hall Band's critically acclaimed debut Ladies & Gentleman... A Bonnaroo 2013 performance saw Hall share the stage with the likes of Chaka Khan, Willie Weeks, James Gadsden, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Solange, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Anthony Hamilton, SchoolBoy Q, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Chance the Rapper, and Thundercat. As a solo artist, Hall has been nominated for the New Orleans Offbeat awards, won New Orleans Big Easy Award, and has been a featured solo artist at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for five consecutive years. Hall will be performing at New Orleans’ Essence Music Festival for the first time in July 2019. Nigel Hall joined Lettuce as a full-time keyboardist and vocalist in 2015. Hall is featured on Lettuce's forthcoming fifth full-length LP ELEVATE, due in June 2019. Nigel and I talk about all kinds of stuff including where he came from, what his favorite Christmas song is, All kinds of music stuff, and the importance of living your truth and being who you are. This is one of my favorite episodes yet and I think you’ll like it also. We talked yesterday and here’s how our conversation went.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Eric Krasno is in a lot more places than one might realize. Known for his work with the bands Soulive and Lettuce, he also works with all kinds of groups as a player - including the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Oteil Burbridge and Friends...it’s a lot of friends. Maybe that’s because he has one foot in the jam band world: the universe of extended grooves, risky riffing and close contact with a community of fans.  What surprised me about Eric is how much stuff he actually does - he’s part frontman, limelight guy, and part behind the scenes guy. For example, he also has another foot in the world of songwriting and production, and particularly in that space where soul and hip hop meet. He has produced and written songs for Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Talib Kweli, Nigel Hall, The London Souls, Marcus King, 50 Cent, and Lawrence.  He also makes records as a solo artist. His most recent release Telescope came out last year, accompanied by a series of animated videos that hold together as a global narrative about the lives of a group of people who live in the same building in New York.  Telescope would also turn out to be a kind of farewell love letter to New York, where Krasno was based and where he made so much of his statement for over 20 years. In late 2019 he moved to LA, settled down, and started his next act. Although he planned to focus on production, he still had over 100 gigs scheduled this year. Then the hammer of history fell, and he found himself locked down in LA.  In Covidtimes, he’s been doing his own podcast called Eric Krasno Plus One.  We zoomed in recently to talk about what he’s doing during these strange and trying times, his experience as a podcaster, producer, and provider of deep and soulful grooves. Along the way we talked about the development of Soulive, Lettuce, Velour Recordings, the values and expectations of jam and jam band audiences, “the boom bap with interesting chord changes”, learning how to do less and better, and how many times one man can say the word “nugget” in an hourlong interview.

Nigel's strong passion for real estate comes from having studied City and Regional Planning at Pratt Institute. He understands that a home is more than just a physical structure, it also means becoming part of a community and a place where happy memories are made. "A lack of ego coupled with commitment, tenaciousness, market knowledge and confidence help me get the job done when faced with any obstacles. As a current homeowner, former co-op owner, landlord and renter, I understand the process and the value inherent in real estate. I seek to inform and educate my clients, so they can make the best decisions based on their unique goals and needs." In addition to real estate, Nigel has worked as a senior multimedia designer in the streaming video and ad tech industries where he eventually transitioned to the Brand Manager of Nobletree Coffee. His combination of design and marketing skills are a great addition to the marketing of his properties. Nigel moved to Park Slope in 1998 and has lived in the area since, with a brief move to Jackson Heights, Queens and Indianapolis, IN. He's steadily among the more celebrated drummers in the game for over two decades, laying the foundation for modern funk music. He pushes the art skyward, prolific in hip-hop, electronic, and jazz. He's been the iconic engine powering Lettuce ever since the future-funk cosmonauts first took flight, back in the mid-1990's at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Their collective trajectory has been astonishing, as has his own journey in music. In addition to slaying with LETT, Deitch has collaborated with everybody from John Scofield to Pretty Lights to Redman & beyond. The GRAMMY-nominated artist is dropping new music left & right, even on quarantine. Deitch stays perpetually in motion, getting busy with his electro-soul duo Break Science, plus his own soul-jazz group Adam Deitch Quartet (featuring Ep.024 guest Wil Blades, and Lettuce's Ryan Zoidis (interviewed later in this program) & Eric Benny Bloom (Ep.017).      Transmitting from Denver, CO., Adam brings us into the Resonate recording and mixing sessions with super-producer Russ Elevado, as well as the band's writing and studio processes. Deitch discusses how LETT creative vibes coalesce, a general modus operandi for the current squadron, and highlights Elevado's dutiful influence. The drummer teases some possible dream collabs, with insightful backstories of how & why they might just happen. Adam gets into the "Funkin from Home" project, then pivots into his own production concepts, ideas, and compositions with regard to new electronic EP The Age of Imperfection. The dude waxes philosophic about sampling traditions, newer trends in the culture, then shows love to some young gunners pioneering the wave in that lo-fi hip-hop space. He tickles the fans with some clues about a new Nigel Hall solo album in the works. Maybe more Break Science acoustic? Towards the end, AD reveals his thoughts on the myriad of emotional elements ever-present in his rhythms & compositions. Universal language inherent in so much that he studies & loves. Always humble, forever a student, yet effortlessly the teacher. Fantastic, fulfilling, & deeply informative Adam Deitch interview! Here's to another ring around the sun, shogun!  Bobby & Denise Deitch were kind enough to make time for the podcast from their home/studio in Nyack, NY, just outside the city. Topics include: how the duo is sheltering-at-home, forthcoming album from Bobby Deitch Band titled Work With Whatcha Got, due May 15. Naturally, I asked Adam's parents for some reflections on their son, his bands, their brotherhood, and his ever-prolific output. Get the latest on Bobby & Denise Deitch music HERE                 ENTER THE ZOID VOID: The final conversation is a profound exchange with my dear friend RYAN ZOIDIS, whom I reached super late on 4/20 night at his home in Portland, ME.. Zoidis is another LETT co-founder, & part of Adam Deitch Quartet, Break Science Live Band, Soulive's Shady Horns, critically-acclaimed Rustic Overtones, & Royal Hammer (Portland roots-reggae crew). Zoid gets personal how the relationship with his young daughter has evolved and transformed during quarantine. How the virtuoso saxman has improved as both musician & teacher. We revisit Russ Elevado's Voodoo touch, how the venerable producer magically elevated the LETT sessions with poignant palette cleansing of the highest order. Zoidis pulls the curtain back on a couple of favorite Resonate joints, floats dreamy ideas for a psychedelic improv/instrumental LETT release, and how the band's recent jaunt through Europe brought the squad even closer, vibrations onstage and off. Zoid kicks knowledge & drops science on natural wines, & introduces his new 'natty-wine' distribution company Benny & Zoid Selections, with bandmate Eric Benny Bloom. Meanwhile, what's up with a rumored wild collab project with Tycoon & Jesus Coomes!? We wrap up this sesh with a string of enlightening topics, beginning with Ryan's beautiful recollections & ruminations on his relationship with the Deitch family. Zoid offers parting thoughts on Still Bill, and seminal dancehall DJ Toyan's timeless classic LP How the West Was Won. Large Up Ryan Zoidis! Soul provider Nigel Hall is in many ways an artist who needs no introduction. An in-demand sideman, he’s built a mighty foundation of funk over the years onstage and in the studio with collaborators including the Warren Haynes Band, Jon Cleary, Soulive, Oteil Burbridge and Roosevelt Collier, Ledisi, the Soul Rebels, Lettuce and countless others. Legions of fans are already well in the know about Hall’s copious keyboard chops and powerful vocal style. But even to them, his Feel Music/Round Hill debut solo album will be a revelation – a confirmation that Hall has stepped out front and center into a creative space to call his own. “Ladies & Gentlemen… Nigel Hall,” due out in digital format November 13th and vinyl November 27, captures the spirit of the songs that made Hall a musician. It was produced by Eric Krasno, guitarist and producer of music by a dizzying array of artists including Norah Jones, Justin Timberlake, Talib Kweli, Aaron Neville and Matisyahu. Hall’s original compositions, from the blissful, sunny ‘60s-style soul grooves of lead single “Gimme A Sign” and “Never Gonna Let You Go” to the teasing, R&B kiss of downtempo cuts like “Too Sweet” and “Call on Me” to show off a record collector’s pitch-perfect knowledge and a lifelong fan’s passion for gritty, muscular rhythm and blues, funky dancefloor rave-ups and sultry bedroom serenades. Nigel Hall grew up in Washington, D.C., in a highly musical family. His fingers first touched the keys before he hit kindergarten age, and his ears were wide open.

Seth and Rob excitedly call Jennifer Hartswick to discuss the heavily anticipated release of a record the recording of which theses three had already discussed in Episode 32 of this podcast. The record is called "Nexus," will be release September 7 and she recorded it with guitarist Nick Cassarino (Nth Power) and Christian McBride (has worked with everybody, listen to episode for specifics) - and the track "Numb" from it is debuted at the end of the episode. Jennifer talks about how Nick evidenced brilliance so early on that she immediately started hiring him for work when he was in his mid-teens, and how he was a key part of this recording. Each of the three people in this conversation has his/her own ocean of respect for Christian McBride, so his brilliance is most certainly discussed. Jennifer even offers her response to a McBride quote about jazz record producers. She talks about how the record is a mix of very tight arrangements and ones which benefited from a bit of looseness. Jennifer also elaborates on the variety of rooms she plays and how they work differently for different types of performances. Seth offers his hope that this record will expose more people to jazz and Jennifer explains how she is already gaining new fans from the Jazz and Blues worlds even thought the record is still mostly just a buzz (not released yet). Jennifer also talks about Mobile, Nigel Hall, when Trey Anastasio met Tom Petty and she assures us that Trey is back in a happy place after the sorrow related with his band's festival being cancelled well past the, "11th hour." Perhaps best of all, Jennifer pokes fun at each host which is an example of just one of the reasons why she is one of this podcast's favorite guests. Seth and Rob discuss the death of Chris Cornell and curious decisions made in the wake of the cancellation of the Pemberton Music Festival. Then they discuss Atlanta’s fantastic SweetWater 420 Festival before giving way to an interview with singer/trumpeter/songwriter Jennifer Hartswick which was recorded during this same festival. Hartswick explains how a Nigel Hall-arranged gig at Tipitina’s in New Orleans led to her recent collaboration with supreme bassist, Christian McBride. The two immediately became friends, and after a few months were in Trey Anastasio’s “Barn” recording studio working in a trio format with guitarist Nick Cassarino. We get some stories from this session, including the unusual way she talked McBride into recording a duet with her. We also hear about how her childhood in a strong musical family, and then high school years in an musically excellent rural Vermont school would lead her to musicians and future band mates like Dave Grippo and Trey Anastasio. She also tells of how she was invited into the Trey Anastasio Band, how she created of some of that band’s signature songs, as well as offers some insight into her various collaborations w/ Umphrey’s McGee and other bands. The hour’ish long interview traverses many other topics, including Hartswick commenting on her sit-ins with Phish, the many, sometimes offensive offers she and band mate, trombonist Natalie Cressman have received to play in all-women and other bands and Turner even tells Hartswick an affecting story about her own husband, bassist Chris Chew. Before wrapping up the episode, Seth reads a couple of emails from careful listeners who noticed subtle errors Rob made during Episode 31. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds (wonderdogsounds.com) Inside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.com Twitter: @InsideoutWTNS Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/insideoutwtns Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
