Standig Room Only: A show about the Washington Football Team and D.C. sports
The Athletic's Ben Standig goes 1-on-1 with former Washington Football Coach head coach Jay Gruden and recaps Wednesday's press conference with Ron Rivera, Marty Hurney and Martin Mayhew. First Ben dives into the latest from Rivera on the front office restructure, Kyle Smith's exit and QB plan (1:45). Then Gruden drops by to talk "Mr. Snyder," what happened with that Dwayne Haskins draft, QB options for Washington, his future plans and the biggest "what if" from his time in Washington (14:48)
First Ben talks about some strategies to regulate emotions, specifically one called Cognitive Reappraisal that helps you change your narrative about the emotions and feelings impacting your life. Then we cover 4 awesome wines that are unheralded, reasonable priced and definitely drinkable. Something with Bubbles Bubbles are good. Bubbles mean it’s a party. And the sound of a cork popping is one of the best sounds out there. The problem is that Champagne can get really expensive or the cheap stuff can leave quite a headache. So what I like to do is go to a different region of Europe that still takes sparking wine with bubbles seriously but without the prestige and price mark up of Champagne France. Some people would say Italy and Prosecco but I like Cava from Spain. The first time I had it was on a family trip we took to Barcelona when I was still in college. The trip was amazing as was the food and wine. I got hooked on Cava and haven’t stopped drinking it since. The sparkler that I like to drink is Isaac Fernandez ‘Biutiful’ Brut Rose Cava. They do everything like the French do by letting the wine have secondary fermentation in the bottle just like champagne but at only $14 a bottle. The fruit is 100% Garnacha which makes it fruity but crisp. I highly recommend it. Rose All Day We love Rose. We loved Rose before it was cool. I give full credit to my wife on that one. There is this awesome seafood restaurant in Austin called Perla’s on South Congress. They have a great patio for people watching and this epic raw bar menu of oysters, crab, shrimp and just generally delicious seafood. We asked for a recommendation for a bottle of wine years ago and the waiter said the Miraval Rose. She totally nailed it and we’ve put it in the rotation since then. It is French but at $17 a bottle still really reasonable. It is a light pink color in a cool looking bottle but this is all about the taste. It is a little floral with an acidic citrusy finish. It is refreshing on a hot day but drinkable year round. The White Wine You’ve Never Heard Of Let’s stay in France because they have been making wine for hundreds of years. They have some epic white wines that are super complex and super expensive made by master wine makers. An unheralded white wine from the Loire Valley is Muscadet (M-U-S-C-A-D-E-T). People don’t know how to say it which will deter people from ordering it or buying it. It is made from this grape called Melon de Borgogne which sounds sweet and gross and probably too similar to muscadine wine which is disgusting. Columbia Valley Cab Napa Valley is probably the wine epicenter of the United States. There are movies and documentaries about it and people go out of their way to visit to taste great wine about an hour north of San Francisco. My wife had her bachelorette party there. It was great and I was jealous. The problem with Napa is how popular it is and that can lead to you paying more for the location on the label than the quality of the wine in the bottle. So just like we went to Spain instead of France for sparkling wine, I recommend going to the Columbia Valley instead of Napa for an awesome Cabernet. One that I love is called Substance Cabernet Sauvignon. It is made from 100% Cabernet grapes and you can get a bottle for $13. They even have it at Costco when you are bulk purchasing 300 rolls of toilet paper. One more tip that I may regret telling you all. There is this great website called Last Bottle. They feature 1 wine per day until it sells out. These guys are based in California and are super connected in the wine scene. It is pretty common to save 30 – 40% off the retail price of the daily wines they feature. I have yet to have a bad wine from Last Bottle --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/calmcash/message
The Rules of Acquisition: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast
Voicemails?! Remember those? So do we! What has happened since last we updated? How have our lives changed forever since we finished watching every episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine? What else is in store from Kickers of Elves on the RoA feed? Hugh has some deets. What is The RoA Remix? What is this about these TNG roundtables? Is this the end voicemails? No! First Ben from the UK has a bone to pick with us on the episode “Valiant.” Jeffrey from Virginia (The Guy Who Hates Worf) has some valuable insights on Starfleet's approach to counseling. Eric from PA (@Aerialbass) isn't here to tell James to get his head right, but … he does have some things to say about our Season 6. Warren from Seattle (@10rant) finally turns on Bashir. Jackie from New Orleans is also an expert, on a topic some of us may have gotten wrong in “Times Orphan.” Kennedy from NY has some thoughts on Section 31. Our favorite subject to rehash over and over. How far is too far with the dark pragmatism for us? Didn't hear your voicemail? Don't worry, we're not done! We have more to do, and as long as you send em in, we'll keep responding to them.
First Ben and Celestia talk about a disturbing modern case of false abduction rumors. Then we get into doppelgangers, a topic with (not surprisingly) multiple angles. What are the odds of randomly finding someone who looks remarkably like you, and what sort of factors increase those odds? Then we look into the darker side of doppelgangers, the harbingers of doom or even a malevolent entity bent on stealing your identity. From Percy Shelley to Jordan Peele, storytellers seem fascinated with these dastardly doubles.
First Ben and Celestia look at a couple concoctions that have their skeptical senses buzzing this week. Then we pick three personality assessment tests from psychology's past and present, doing a deep dive into their origins, what drove their popularity, and consumer's reluctance to give them up even after serious flaws emerged. Looking at phrenology, the Rorschach test, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a fascinating tour of how consumerism can leapfrog skepticism when it comes to a topic we all love--ourselves!
In our view, 3D Printing - also known as Additive Manufacturing - ranks up there with Artificial Intelligence as one of "those technologies," meaning one of those that truly holds potential for fundamental changes in how the economy functions. To say that 3D Printing represents a new way of building things is like saying that commercial aviation represented a new way of getting places. 3D Printing will change the who, what, where and how of manufacturing. The “when” is starting now.Our interview with Ben Redwood of 3DHubs is split into two parts. In this episode, we use Ben as our technical expert, and he’ll explain to us all the different kinds of additive manufacturing processes that exist, go over some technical terms, and talk to us about the industry in general. It’s a bit technical at first, but there are two rewards for listening through to the end of the episode. First: Ben’s written a book on 3DPrinting, two chapters of which are being made available for free, to you. Second: later in the episode Ben reveals insights from their latest Future Trends report, which is also available for free, and we dive into a discussion of how 3D printing will change everyone’s life. In part two of the interview, which we’ll air in a few weeks, we’ll talk to Ben about 3D Hubs, where he’s the Director of Supply Chain. In between, we’re going to hear from the founders of 4 of the most interesting and promising 3D Printing startups out there, including Greg Mark of Markforged, Nanci Hardwick of MELD Manufacturing, Bob Swartz of Impossible Objects, and Blake Teipel of Essentium.

Happy Friday! We are excited to come back to you, just Josh and Ben! Part of our 'new format' of the show is to have a monthly recap show and discuss things we've learned from all the guests this month. First Ben and Josh talk about Brianna Wu's interview. Josh is convinced, though Ben asserts Josh is wrong, that Ben has a crush on Brianna. Crush is the wrong word, Ben admires what she does and how she does it. Josh and Ben could agree on Brianna's value-bomb of "be honest with yourself, keep on your 'mission objectives'." Ben and Josh also discuss what her message means to us. Next, Josh and Ben review their time with Josh's crush, Shannon Hernandez. Josh clears things up and says Shannon is just a fun guy to hang out with. We talk about some of the stories Shannon shared and we also agree on his value-bomb "stay persistent and allow yourself to grow in small steps." This is huge and we talk about how Shannon is living this idea. Then Ben and Josh cover Susan Carlson. Josh and Ben both enjoyed speaking with Susan and both have a ton of respect for her. She is very articulate and passionate about her goals and thoughts on the education system here in Phoenix. Susan's value-bomb that stuck with us is "keep on keeping on." This point also echos Shannon's point. Before Josh and Ben discuss the most recent interview of the month, they get on a bit of a tangent about motorcycles (especially considering Josh just purchased a new bike). Finally, Ben and Josh speak about Brett Gajda. Brett shared some fun stories in his interview. While it was a great time, it was also super informative. Brett left us with a great value-bomb "breakdown almost always comes before break through." Huge advice, and something we all should keep in mind when things get difficult. As always, a special thank you to The Strand for our intro and outro music!
