Ever heard of a first moon party? It's a party you can throw a girl when she gets her first period. But lots of moms get carried away with the idea. They throw a party whether the girls want it or not! Yes, we want our daughters to feel proud of their transition to womanhood. But we need to remember that while this might be an exciting time for them, it's also a time of trepidation and adjustment. We need to support them as they make that transition and accept their decision whether to celebrate it or not.
It’s a vajical moment in every girl’s life: the day she becomes a woman. It’s just like a Hallmark Movie — if Hallmark movies were about blood clots, crippling cramps and rage-filled late night searches for chocolate. Each of us experiences this transition to womanhood in our own special way, and it’s a day of your life you will never forget…no matter how hard you try. On this episode four very funny and brave women share their hilarious first period stories. SUWON WEAVER First up, is the hilarious writer/comedian Suwon Weaver @suwonweaver whose mother, despite being an actual female mother person herself, completely unravels when her daughter gets her period. L.J. NOEL The very funny L.J. Noel gets her first period in the most dramatic way possible, and unfortunately she’s rewarded with a large standing ovation. THEA TOUCHTON Actress Thea Touchton @theatouchton joins the sisterhood of the stained underpants in the company of her grandmother who, caught somewhat off guard, outfits her with one of her diapers. Finally, award-winning TV director and host of the podcast Mojo Girl Madness, Katy Garretson @katygarretson joins the prison of womanhood in an actual prison. Here’s a photo of skin tight Dittos just to show you exactly how difficult it would be to hide a massive sanitary napkin in these groovy jeans. I mentioned the amazing first period videos produced by the folks at HelloFlo, including The Period Fairy, First Moon Party and my daughter’s favorite, Camp Gyno. These videos are amazing and really changed how we talk and laugh about first periods. Thank you HelloFlo for being so fearless and funny and completely changing the way we talk about first periods. Thank you for your support. In this episode, Vanessa Carlisle chats with Naama Bloom, author of "HelloFlo: The Guide, Period.: The Everything Puberty Book for the Modern Girl", about the way we teach young women about their bodies through puberty in a positive and empowering way. Lauren Kiley and Danny Cruz join in discussing the book as well as some of Namaa Bloom's HelloFlo viral videos like "First Moon Party". In HEADlines, the On the Dresser team discuss same-sex sex ed and we have a recap on last weekends Women's March and hear again from Cris Sardina, Director of the Desiree Alliance, who was a speaker at the National Women's March in Las Vegas.
In this bold, savvy, and feminist new take on a body book, Bloom hopes to remove the stigma attached to puberty. When her women’s health site – HelloFlo.com – launched in 2015, they did just that, with two groundbreaking videos that went viral: “First Moon Party” (41+ million YouTube views) and “Camp Gyno” (12+ million YouTube views). Her new book is equally frank. HELLOFLO: THE GUIDE, PERIOD makes health and wellness as easy as possible for young girls to understand, helping them navigate everything from body changes to emotional well-being. Naama Bloom will discuss her new book, as well as these relevant topics: ADVOCACY FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH Studies show that doctors have a tendency not to take a woman’s pain seriously, undertreat them when they do mention symptoms, and take a longer period of time to actually give them medication. Couple that with a young woman’s age, and it’s no wonder that so many young women and girls not only don’t get the help they need, but grow up thinking that they don’t deserve it in the first place. http://msmagazine.com/blog/ 2017/10/09/must-help-girls- young-women-advocate-health/ BIRTH CONTROL MANDATE The Trump administration’s recent rollback of the Obamacare birth control mandate hit women hard, and not just for those using the pill for family planning. It’s also prescribed for a variety of medical conditions, including endometriosis, irregular periods, chronic acne, and hormonal imbalances that affect countless women and teens. http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/06/ health/women-react-trump- birth-control-mandate-bn/ index.html HUMAN RIGHTS In developing countries, many girls grow up in communities where menstruation is shrouded in shame and stigma, misinformation is rampant, and clean menstrual supplies are scarce. Girls and women miss classes, drop out of school, and fail to reach their full potential because of menstruation. Over the past few years, a “menstruation movement” has swept the U.S., aiming to destigmatize periods and bring safer products to women and girls everywhere. http://www.newsweek.com/2017/ 07/21/men-fighting- menstruation-shaming- developing-world-634902.html GENDER TABOOS A Nepali “menstruation hut” ritual claimed the life of a teenage girl in July after she was bitten by a snake while banished to a cowshed during a menstruation ritual. The 19-year-old victim was taking part in chhaupadi, a common practice in the west of Nepal in which women, considered unclean during menstruation, are sequestered for the extent of their periods. Chhaupadi dates back centuries and has its roots in Hindu taboos over menstruation. Outlawed by Nepal’s Supreme Court in 2005, the practice continues amid claims the country is turning a blind eye to the deaths of women and girls. http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/10/ asia/nepal-menstruation-hut- deaths-outrage/index.html http://helloflo.com/
