Do hard winters curb garden pests? A listener's question about whether cold weather reduces “bad bugs” leads to a deeper conversation about beneficial insects, biological control, and sustainable pest management. In this episode, Mary Stone shares insights from the NJ Nursery & Landscape Association's Total Pro Expo, exploring why most insects belong in our ecosystems and how predator-prey relationships naturally regulate pest populations. She discusses the importance of native plants, plant diversity, layered landscape design, and nectar-rich flowers in supporting pollinators and beneficial insects. Nature reminds us that harmony grows not from elimination, but from inviting more of what sustains life in our gardens and in our garden of life. The Asphyx (1972) In this episode, we dive deep into the 1972 British science fiction horror cult classic, The Asphyx (also known as Spirit of the Dead or The Horror of Death). Set in the Victorian era, this unique period chiller follows a wealthy philanthropist and amateur scientist, Sir Hugo Cunningham, who stumbles upon a way to photograph the "Asphyx"—the Ancient Greek spirit of death that appears at the precise moment of a person's demise.A Quick Mea Culpa on Picture QualityBefore we get into the meat of the film, we have to address the elephant in the room: the visuals. Throughout the episode, you'll hear us absolutely tear into the "pan and scan" and the ropy, grainy picture quality of the version we watched.Full disclosure: We've since realized we were watching a particularly bottom-of-the-barrel DVD. It turns out there are actually stunning, high-quality HD versions of The Asphyx available for free on YouTube! From the Todd-AO 35mm widescreen transfers to beautifully restored prints, the real film looks pretty good. If you want to see what Freddie Young actually intended, go search for it—it's easy to find and looks worlds better than the disc we suffered through.Inside the Episode: Behind the Lens of a Horror Oddity. Despite our technical hurdles, The Asphyx is a fascinating piece of British cinema history. We explore the career of director Peter Newbrook, who rose from a messenger boy to the second unit photographer for the legendary mirage shot in Lawrence of Arabia. Key Discussion Points:The Legend Freddie Young: How a three-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer ended up shooting a 70s mad scientist flick. The Ghostbusters Connection: We examine the theory that this film's spirit-trapping tech was the direct blueprint for the 1984 Ghostbusters equipment. The Remake That Never Was: Details on the failed 2011 reboot that was set to star Bond girl Alison Doody. Music: Composer Bill McGuffie (of Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. fame) and his incredible story of overcoming a childhood injury to master the piano. A Star-Studded Cast of British Icons. The acting pedigree in this film is surprisingly high, featuring some of the most recognizable faces in British television and film: Robert Stephens: The star of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. We discuss his marriage to Maggie Smith and his iconic work in The Box of Delights.Robert Powell: From Jesus of Nazareth to fighting rats in Doomwatch, Powell brings a certain intensity to the role of Giles. Jane Lapotaire: A Tony-winner and star of The Crown (as Princess Alice). We also take a detour into her role in One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing. Fiona Walker & Ralph Arliss: Spotting familiar faces from Doctor Who, I, Claudius, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and the classic series Survivors. 1 Kings 18:16-211. Some gods never answerAnd here's the tragic irony: The more your god doesn't answer, the MORE you sacrifice to it. The prophets of Baal started dancing. Then shouting. Then cutting themselves. Why? Because when your god doesn't work, you think: "I'm not doing enough. I need to try harder."I heard someone once call it “ the treadmill of false worship.”2. One God always answers1 Kings 18:36-39Because it is not about how much you pray, it's about WHO you pray to.prayer isn't about convincing a reluctant God to do what we want. Prayer is accessing the power of a God who WANTS to answer, who LOVES to reveal Himself, who DELIGHTS to turn hearts back to Him.3. When God answers, hearts change4. In this New Year’s conversation, Dr. Zach Clinton sits down with Dylan Mandell to explore what real resilience looks like when life becomes painfully uncertain. Dylan shares why so many people abandon their goals early in the year and how a shift in spiritual perspective can change everything. He unpacks how discipline is not rooted in motivation or willpower, but in identity, obedience, and daily dependence on God. Throughout the conversation, Dylan reflects on what it looks like to place hope fully in Jesus rather than in circumstances, outcomes, or treatments, and how physical consistency has become a powerful tool for strengthening his spiritual health and resilience as well. His story challenges listeners to rethink strength, success, and what it truly means to trust God when the future feels unclear. Dylan also opens up about how suffering has reshaped his gratitude, sharpened his priorities, and deepened his awareness of what truly matters. He speaks honestly about what cancer can take, but even more powerfully about what God can redeem through faith, purpose, perspective, and love for others. Through Scripture, remembrance, and anchoring himself in eternal truth, Dylan reveals how he stays grounded on the hardest days. This conversation offers a biblical vision of godly resilience for a new year, reminding listeners that strength is not found in trying harder, but in trusting deeper, choosing hope, and continuing to walk faithfully with Jesus one obedient step at a time. This week, Thomas sits down with acclaimed poet and author Ross Gay for a conversation on the intrinsic link between joy and sorrow, and the importance of finding delight in a world where doing so feels increasingly difficult.Ross' work is focused on finding joy through human connection, from kinship and ancestry to the profound and powerful connection we feel when we help each other carry our sorrows. In this way, sorrow serves as an unexpected source of delight, a fundamental element of life that illuminates the precarity of joy, and thus its potency.Ross was also kind enough to share readings of some of his delightful poetry.✨ Watch the video version of this episode on YouTube:

Andy and Brendan are relieved to be talking about current events and the content gods have delivered, providing nuggets spanning from Bethpage to the Bahamas. They begin with the Hero World Challenge and its host "Doctor" Munjal. Brendan calls for an early Thirstbucket of the Week following his yearly media availability in Albany and questions what he's a doctor of after all. PJ chimes in with some quick research finding that his doctorates may or may not be honorary, leading Andy to refer to him as "Mr. Munjal" for the rest of the show. Tiger Woods also spoke on Tuesday about his playing future and the future of the PGA Tour. He stayed in line with reports about Brian Rolapp's 20-event schedule coming as soon as 2027 and confirmed that he'll be OUT for Jup Links in the first half of the TGL season. Brian Rolapp found himself in front of a microphone last week and made sure to mention that the "middle class matters," which is sure to put the minds of mules at ease. In more from the Ryder Cup that will never end, Justin Thomas appeared on the No Laying Up podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about the American loss at Bethpage. Within the interview, JT took exception to the green speeds at The People's Country Club and said that they were not what Keegan Bradley asked for. He stated that "they" argued with the Americans about the speed, which was aggregated to no end on social media. On the very (too?) busy Schedule for the Week, the Hero has brought in outside help for its Pro-Am, Rory is teeing it up at Royal Melbourne with Dr. Chipinski, and Will Zalatoris makes his return at the Nedbank in South Africa. With almost all of the world's top players in action this week, Andy and Brendan wonder if there are some scheduling issues that lead to three tournaments spreading out the top-end talent as opposed to getting them all in one place to compete against each other. Lastly, the Skechers World Champions Cup will somehow air on ESPN and ABC this weekend, so PJ has a full primer ready to go for those tuning in for their first Champs Tour action of the year. Friday's episode will contain a full, detailed discussion about TGL's Gil Hanse intro video that set Golf Twitter ablaze on Tuesday afternoon.

Their volatiles give them a stimulating, activating action on our bodies – not just the lungs where it's most obvious, but also in digestion, the kidneys & bladder, blood circulation, and even the nerves & mind.Evergreens make excellent tea, but don't use the needles from your solstice / Xmas tree! They've probably got a lot of pesticide residues. Instead, forage after a storm for a downed branch, and work with the needles from that.Evergreens can also be prepared into steams, elixirs, an evergreen-focused fire cider or thieves' vinegar, and of course the old reliable resin salve.HHP 205: Herbs A-Z: Pinus & PlantagoHHP 146: Herbs Help Us Feel Our Way Through Difficult Times – discussion of evergreens begins ~16:50.If you have a moment, it would help us a lot if you could subscribe, rate, & review our podcast wherever you listen.
