Today I am chatting about These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong. Joining me as my guest is Rachel from the Barely Bookish podcast. If you love the story of Romeo and Juliet, you will love this re-imagining of Shakespeare's classic story. Chloe Gong takes the story of Romeo and Juliet and plunges it into 1926 Shanghai. This story has it all; warring gangster families, a forbidden romance, war in the city, and a monster who wants to destroy them all. And in the midst of it all, is the classic star-crossed lovers story of Romeo and Juliet, complete with a vast amount of Easter eggs from Shakespeare's original story. Join Rachel and me as we chat all about the story, characters, Romeo and Juliet Easter eggs, 1926 Shanghai and U.S. fashion, monsters, and more!A little about These Violent Delights:The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette's first love…and first betrayal. But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can't stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.Small Ways To Live Well from The Simple ThingsGet a six week suggestion box of things to note and notice this spring.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyHave a question about today's book or author? This week we are back with a thriller recommended by Pooja titled, These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever! Set in 1970s Pittsburgh, the story follows two college students as they navigate school, family drama, and their inner desires. Cue. Our. Intrigue. While you'll have to listen to the entire episode to hear our final thoughts on the novel, you can look forward to hearing a rant by Sarah, Harshini's unfiltered thoughts on descriptive books, and Pooja ruminating over potential alternative plotlines. Classic. Happy listening!
Written by Book of the Month author Chloe Gong. Author website: https://thechloegong.com/ New members can get Chloe Gong's novel, These Violent Delights, at bookofthemonth.com for just $9.99 with code VBT at checkout. Here's the brief:No one wanted to see the psychic. Not initially. But it was a bachelorette party. How could we say no to the bride? Everyone played along at first, cracking jokes and taking sips of champagne. But as soon as the psychic entered our hotel suite, everyone at the party felt the energy shift. Suddenly, we couldn't wait to hear what the psychic would say. Of course, none of us realized that the words she was about to utter would change lives forever.
This week we talked about These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, and our only complaint was the bugs because we both hate them! BUT IT WAS SUCH A GOOD BOOK AND WE DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT! If you were fascinated to see the human breast might, kind of, sort of look like a flower, then you will LOVE this book. Really. That is the vibe. The Emperor is new and fervently religious. The Princess is rebellious and loves her country. Men are in power. Men make decisions. Men have decided the Princess is to be exiled. Men cannot tame the power of the land and its people, even though they are trying. Princess Malini is out of options and her new maidservant, Priya, is a breath of new life. Politics are front and central here as the story of a conquered people, religion, and the unexpected loyalty of the land move in tandem with Emperor Chandra's horrific plans: Purify the women. Burn the women. How about they rise up instead?! Think Romeo and Juliet, but instead of taking place in Verona, it's 1920s Shanghai, and instead of the Capulets and Montagues, we have the White Flowers and Scarlet Gang. Oh and imagine there is a monster running around the city making people tear out their own throats! In our next read, These Violent Delights, author Chloe Gong takes the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet and gives it a fantasy makeover complete with monsters, potions, and of course, forbidden love. The romance and fantasy expert, Sierra Marshall, joins me today to talk all things Shakespeare. In this episode we cover: Why this book should not be described as a Romeo and Juliet retelling. Why we may get kicked out of Goodreads and TikTok for our very unpopular opinion of this book. Why choking someone with a necklace and holding a knife to someone's throat is pretty sexy...at least in Juliet's case Grab a drink, open the book, and press play on this fair podcast where we lay our opinions. If you wanted a bit more enemies to lovers, a bit more politics, a bit more scheming, and a bit more betrayal than what was in These Violent Delights then you are in luck! Monsters take the back seat in this conclusion to Chloe Gong's duology, while family dynamics and the future of Shanghai take center stage. The gangsters are floundering, the Communists and Nationalists will be heard, blackmail is afoot, and only Roma and Juliette can be the peace they want to see in the world. The bugs are still alive and well and causing havoc, but in a new and different way. Lovely. shivers TW / CW: bugs! This episode is going to be a bit different, as we have not one, but two books to cover! The books of the moment for today's episode are These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong. Just a forewarning for those of you listening, this is NOT a spoiler-free zone. We will be discussing these books in all of their glory, which of course includes revealing the ending. The author of These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends, Chloe Gong is a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she double-majored in English and International Relations. Born in Shanghai and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Chloe is now located in New York pretending to be a real adult. After devouring the entire YA section of her local library, she started writing her own novels at age 13 to keep herself entertained, and has been highly entertained ever since. Chloe has been known to mysteriously appear by chanting “Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's best plays and doesn't deserve its slander in pop culture” into a mirror three times. The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution. The heart-stopping follow-up to These Violent Delights, an imaginative, alluring retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in 1920s Shanghai. After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on the warpath. One wrong move, and her cousin will step into usurp her place as the Scarlet Gang's heir. The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood. If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less. Roma is still reeling from Marshall's death, and his cousin, Benedikt, will barely speak to him. Roma knows it's his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he's determined to set things right - even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure. Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Roma's cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all. Shanghai is already at a boiling point: the Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day and gangster rule faces complete annihilation. Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they aren't prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other.

Good Morrow and welcome to the Summer Theatre Program! We're coming in hot with a discussion of the world's favorite romantic tragedy, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. We break down some popular adaptations and retellings of the play, from the modern take with Leo and Claire Danes, to West Side Story, to Gnomeo and Juliet, to the YA fantasy novel These Violent Delights. Then we look at some of our favorite references to R&J in pop culture, like the episode of Gilmore Girls where Rory played Juliet, and the greatest song ever written, Taylor Swift's “Love Story.” We also muse about which social media apps a modern Romeo and Juliet would use (Juliet = Tumblr; Romeo = Reddit). These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong "The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can't stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule."

“These violent delights have violent ends. And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, which as they kiss, consume.” These Violent Delights (Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2020) is the debut novel by Chloe Gong. At first glance, the book seems like Romeo and Juliet transplanted to 1920s Shanghai: two rival families, and two main characters: Juliette Cai and Roma Montagov. But Chloe Gong takes the tropes of Romeo and Juliet and transforms them in ways beyond the new setting: Juliette and Roma have already had their teenage relationship, an epidemic of madness stalks the population of Shanghai, and there are rumors of a monster in the Huangpu River. These Violent Delights is a thrilling tale of intrigue and investigation, woven with horror and fantasy elements. More information can be found at Chloe's website. In this interview, Chloe and I talk about her book, and how its elements connect to the setting of 1920s Shanghai. We talk about the various ways she works in the tropes of Romeo and Juliet into the story, and some of the unintended parallels to the present day! Chloe Gong is a student at the University of Pennsylvania, studying English and international relations. During her breaks, she's either at home in New Zealand or visiting her many relatives in Shanghai. Chloe has been known to mysteriously appear when “Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's best plays and doesn't deserve its slander in pop culture” is chanted into a mirror three times. THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS: A Novel by Victoria Namkung Victoria Namkung’s journalism and essays have appeared in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, NBC News, and VICE, among other publications. She is the author of the romantic thriller, The Things We Tell Ourselves, and a contributor to the anthology, Asian American Youth: Culture, Identity, and Ethnicity. Victoria has taught courses at UCLA, UCSB, and 826LA, and resides in Los Angeles. These Violent Delights is a literary examination of illicit student and teacher relationships and their lasting effects on even the most compliant victims. At Windemere School for Girls, one of America’s elite private schools, Dr. Gregory Copeland is the beloved chair of the English Department. A married father with a penchant for romantic poetry—and impressionable teenage girls—he operates in plain sight for years, until one of his former students goes public with allegations of inappropriate conduct. With the help of an investigative journalist, and two additional Windemere alumnae who had relationships with Copeland as students, the unlikely quartet unites to take him down. Set in modern-day Los Angeles, These Violent Delights is a literary exploration of the unyielding pressures and vulnerabilities that so many women and girls experience, and analyzes the ways in which our institutions and families fail to protect or defend us. A suspenseful and nuanced story told from multiple points of view, the novel examines themes of sexuality, trauma, revenge, and the American myth of liberty and justice for all. “These Violent Delights is smart, suspenseful, unsettling, and only too relevant. I promise you won’t be able to put it down. Just don’t forget to breathe.” —Kim Askew, co-author of the Twisted Lit novels from Simon & Schuster
