Synopsis It's quite possible that you or someone you know is the caregiver for an ill or aging relative or friend. If so, you know the emotional rewards—and heavy emotional toll—that caretaking involves. On today's date in 1989, the American composer John Adams led the Saint Paul Chamber orchestra and baritone Sanford Sylvan in the premiere performance of a powerful new chamber work he had composed inspired by—and in honor of—caretakers everywhere. In 1988, John Adams's father had died after years of struggling with Alzheimer's, and Adams was haunted by images of his mother caring for her husband as the illness progressed. Living in San Francisco, Adams was also moved by Bay Area friends who nursed loved ones during those helpless early years of the AIDS epidemic. Adams found that these 20th century experiences resonated in certain poems by the 19th century American poet Walt Whitman, who had served as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War, initially to care for his own wounded brother, but subsequently to tend other wounded soldiers in those traumatic years. Adams chose one Whitman poem, entitled The Wound Dresser, as text and title for his new work. The Wound-Dresser, said Adams, is about the power of "human compassion that is acted out on a daily basis." This work has become one of the most-performed and most-admired of all the compositions of John Adams. In a long and illustrious career that began as a sportswriter for the New York Daily News, Dave has been involved with many different media forms. We fondly remember Dave from his time at 66 WFAN, an all-sports radio station in New York. Dan Bosworth aka Big Dan has taken his love of cooking barbecue and turned it into a career as the pitmaster and owner of Big Dan's Barbecue in Catawissa, Pennsylvania. Dan is a proud member of the National Barbecue & Grilling Association (NBBQA). We talk about the Fall season at their family farm and how serving barbecue from a trailer at that farm has turned into a sit-down barbecue restaurant at that farm. Dave is also the co-host of the wonderful podcast, BBQ Happy Hour, https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bbq-happy-hour/id1619130223 with his co-host, Mike Massiglia aka Messy Mike. American news coverage about Mexico invariably focuses on migration and drug cartels. Less talked about is whether the country is edging towards authoritarianism under President AndrésManuel López Obrador. Elected in 2018 to a six-year term, the president's tight control over the Morena political party and his attacks on civil institutions have drawn comparisons to Donald Trump. Earlier this year, López Obrador, also known as AMLO, brought in the military to not only police city streets but run government infrastructure like airports, giving the military unprecedented powers in a move that alarmed democracy watchers. Described as the “Teflon president,” López Obrador enjoys a 60% approval rating despite a stagnant economy and rising criminal violence. We'll talk with experts about the state of Mexico's democracy. Guests: Denise Dresser, professor, political science, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). Dresser's most recent article for Foreign Affairs is titled "Mexico's Dying Democracy." María Marván Laborde , professor, political science, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Marván Laborde is currently a fellow with the U.S.-Mexico Institute at UC San Diego. Natalie Kitroeff, Bureau Chief for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, New York Times

A week ago I walked into a thrift store and found truly the vintage dollhouse dresser of unrealized dreams for sale for $125 and I balked and didn't buy it (but listener and new friend Hannah did). Now I can't stop thinking about it and I had to call Sally in to help me figure out why I, a professional money spender, panicked and didn't spend the money on this dresser. We're calling it non-buyer's remorse. PS – Do you have this 70s dresser? Can I buy it from you? Pennysavers were a free community periodical that advertised cheap items for sale, often with a description like '$30 Dresser for sale OB. Contact Lisa.'. And it was these women who would be targeted by Bobby Joe Long, earning him the name 'The Classified Ads Rapist'. But then he took it a step further, murdering at least 10 women in the Tampa Bay area before a brave 17-year-old girl named Lisa McVey escaped his clutches and assisted the police in bringing an end to Bobby Joe Long. Savanna Lafontaine-Greywind had no reason to suspect her neighbor, Brooke Crews, was up to something. Brooke claimed she just needed a quick favor. Would Savanna come upstairs and try on a dress she'd been making? Savanna was eight months pregnant and about to sit down to dinner, but she told Brooke she'd help her out. It was the last thing she ever did. Then Kristin tells us a story that illustrates the dangers of becoming a confidential informant. When police discovered marijuana and ecstasy in 23-year-old Rachel Hoffman's apartment, they leveled with her. She could go to prison for up to four years. Or she could become a confidential informant. Rachel chose the latter and soon found herself at the center of a very dangerous drug bust. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. I thought you might like a compilation of my favorite books about the royals, and royally-adjacent fiction that I return to again and again.
