Rob and Jeni Evans happily retired early but faced a dilemma - their jobs did not pay for health insurance after retirement and they were too young to qualify for Medicare. Health insurance would have cost the couple $24,000 per year. As a solution, they decided to rid their 30+ years of possessions and move to another country. They whittled down everything they owned to 10 suitcases and relocated to Costa Rica. The Evanses analogize Costa Rica to Disneyland and they have no regrets! Rob contends there are three stages of retirement: (1) Go-Go, when you're in your 60s; Slow-Go is the 70s; and No-Go? You guessed it, you're now in your 80s and beyond. Something tells us the Evans will never slow down! On episode 21 of Retire There with Gil and Gene, Rob and Jeni share everything you would want to know and more from their exciting journey to Costa Rica! Jen Beck Seymour and Greg Seymour are long distance hikers who go by their trail names, Chica and Sunsets. For the past year, they had been renovating a hostel in Franklin, North Carolina along the Appalachian Trail and had opened to hikers just five weeks before the pandemic closed all short term rentals in the state. We talk about their love of the Appalachian Trail community, some of the hikers they met who passed through their hostel during uncertain times and the next adventure they will plan for when they can hike again. Do you dream about spending years living abroad? I've done it, and so have all my guests today, and we are all here to tell you that if you ever get the chance to try - grab it! Living in another country is a very special experience and quite different from just taking a trip somewhere. And if you can live in several other countries (or more!) like the first guest in this episode, Kelly Dunning, then so much the better. When I spoke to Kelly last year she was living in Tbilisi in Georgia, and we chat in this episode about how she ended up spending the best part of a decade living abroad. Next I talk to Erin Holmes who left Australia with her two young kids planning to travel in Asia for six months ... and didn't come home until five years later. I can relate to that - I left for a year in Japan and spent five and a half years living in three different countries - and we talk about how this can happen! Finally, I talk to Greg Seymour who was a bit more deliberate in his plans to spend years abroad in Costa Rica - although he still didn't have any definite plans. You know I love slow travel and if you're travelling on foot that's one of the slowest forms of travel there is - hence my love for the topic of hiking, which is what this episode of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast is all about! I start off the episode talking with highly experienced hiker Greg Seymour, who has through-hiked the Appalachian Trail (amongst other hiking experiences) and we chat about some of the wonderful benefits of being out there in nature. Next I talk with Eva Westerling who, despite considering herself something of a non-hiker when she was younger, has gone on to do some amazing hikes on her travels, particularly in Morocco and Oman. Lasty I chat with Talon Windwalker about his hiking experiences with his daughter both in the United States and in Europe, and how you don't have to be out in the vast wilderness to experience benefits from going for a hike. How do you choose your next destination? In Episode 116 I chat with four travellers about the different ways they decide where they're going to travel next and between them we discover a multitude of reasons people choose their destinations - and there are no doubt still more! First up I chat with Tamara Gruber who takes some trips alone with her school-aged daughter and is clever at tying in some of their destinations to connect up with what her daughter's been learning at school (I love this!). Meagan Hurst is next and follows a method I often use too: where can she get a bargain airfare to! I have quite often visited a pretty random place just because it was cheap to get there, and sometimes those places turn out to be unexpected gems. My Cambodian friend Cham Peou has put quite some thought into how he chooses his destations and I love his approach. Finally, I chat with Greg Seymour who has a really great philosophy about choosing destinations - and making sure he and his wife go outside their comfort zones, but not too far out (which I think is the perfect strategy!). Jen Beck Seymour and Greg Seymour found themselves bogged down in the daily 9-5 grind as many of us do. They were working long hours in Dallas having spent 20+ years in their corporate jobs earning good money only to live a life of comfort and purchasing their toys, but realized that actually had very little time together to use those toys and spent it with each other. They weren't particularly happy in their situation. Sound familiar at all? When Greg's health appeared to be taking a turn for the worse due to stress, the two decided they must find a better way. They considered other options to stay working elsewhere in the US, but decided that a major relocation and mind-shift was in order. Jen and Greg ultimately decided to retire early, sell the house as well as all of the toys and move south to Costa Rica. This was Greg's idea which did not sit very well with Jen at first, but she eventually warmed up to it and to Costa Rica they went. Listen in to hear their story and the happiness that followed their monumental decision.
