In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I discuss science-supported tools to improve sleep by supporting a healthy circadian rhythm using key behaviors and environmental cues. I explain specific morning, afternoon and evening behaviors that will increase daytime alertness and support deeper, more consistent sleep at night. I also cover sleep supplements, the effects of caffeine, alcohol and THC on sleep, as well as practical strategies for managing jet lag and shift work. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Okay, okay. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Here's the thing nobody tells you before you go to the Amalfi Coast is it requires understanding of what you actually want from the experience before you go. Because the version you've seen on Instagram and the reality of being there are two very different things. We spent several days exploring the coast and made a choice that ended up defining our entire trip. Instead of staying in Positano or Sorrento like most people think they want to, we based ourselves in Atrani, a tiny town just around the corner from Amalfi that most people walk right past. And honestly, it changed everything. In this episode, we're getting into the real Amalfi Coast. The ferry logistics, the stairs, the beaches, the transportation. The smaller towns that might actually be a better fit than the famous names on every highlight reel. And what we'd do again without hesitation. If the Amalfi Coast is on your list, this episode is one you don't want to miss. Some links are affiliate links. See our disclosure. So your three bartenders are back from overseas, but still a bit jet lagged and struggling to keep up with the news. Was it a good week? The firing of Scott Pelley is certainly good news, as are the initial results of the California primary, where the energy and enthusiasm is clearly on the side of the outsider insurgent candidates. (Knock on wood: let's see how the "vote counting" goes over the next several weeks in the "incompetent" Golden State.) Not such a good week for John Bolton, nor for aesthetic sensibility, if the Obama library is any indication. Why does the left prefer brutalist ugliness? We have our suspicions. . .We do our longer dive this week into some meta-narratives about the Supreme Court, inspired by Paul Moreno's terrific Law & Liberty article, "Save the Last Branch for Me." It's a new day indeed. We also get in our licks at woke British policing, Star Trek, and the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, which has some rather uncommon Eucharistic forms. Oh, also McDonalds news, just to keep John Happy and well fed.
Great excitement as Peter and I are in the same room for once!
There are some cities in the world that instantly pull you in the moment you arrive. Florence wasn't one of those cities for us. In fact, when we first arrived in Florence, we honestly wondered if we had made a mistake. Normally, when we visit an Italian city, one of our favorite things to do is wander. We'll head down side streets, get lost a little bit, and usually discover quiet piazzas, local restaurants, or neighborhoods that feel authentic and alive. But Florence didn't really work that way for us. But this episode isn't about why you should avoid Florence. Over the next few days, we started figuring out how Florence actually works. We learned the times of day when the city became enjoyable. We found the places locals seemed to escape to. And once we stopped trying to experience Florence the way social media tells you to, the city slowly started opening up to us. Some links are affiliate links. See our disclosure.
Musik: Someone Else's Memories by Revolution Void licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License.

LIMITED GAMECHANGERS SHIRT!

Have you ever wondered what happens when you stop simply sightseeing and start participating in a destination? There's a point on many trips where you realize what you remember aren't the famous landmarks, museums, and attractions. For us, this trip through Spain and Italy started to change when we stopped simply looking at places and started participating in them. Some of our favorite moments happened sitting around tables, helping prepare food, hearing family stories, and learning how people actually live in the places we were visiting. In this episode, we wanted to talk about three experiences that completely changed how we connected with this trip and encourage you to seek out similar experiences on your next trip. All three experiences had something in common. They helped us appreciate these destinations in a way that went far beyond sightseeing. In this episode you'll discover: Why local food experiences create stronger travel memories A private cooking class in the hills outside Florence Traditional Italian food culture and family life Cheese making at Masseria Fragnite near Ostuni Learning to make mozzarella and burrata by hand Why Puglia feels different from other parts of Italy The value of slowing down while traveling How meaningful travel often happens outside the main tourist areas The role food, wine, and conversation play in Italian culture Why immersive travel experiences help destinations feel more personal Resources and Links from this Epsiode (Some links are affiliate links.
Most people think jet lag is just about time zones. What if the real problem is inflammation? In this episode of Get Yourself Optimized, I sat down with Andrew Herr, founder and CEO of FlyKitt, a former human performance strategist for the U.S. military, and twice named a Mad Scientist by the U.S. Army, and he completely reframes how you think about travel, recovery, and peak performance. "When your body runs cleaner, when it's being more efficient, when it's not inflamed, you can just catch the signal better." Andrew doesn't just help road warriors arrive feeling sharp. He goes deep on the physiology of sleep, the underrated power of polyphenols, the psychological tools that break self-sabotage, and the surprising spiritual dimension of optimizing your health. In this episode, we cover:
You've probably heard of jetlag, the feeling of fatigue and disorientation that occurs when you travel across different time zones, but did you know that you can experience a similar phenomenon without leaving your home? It's called social jetlag and is caused by changing your sleep patterns. It happens when you change your sleep schedule on the weekends to fit your social life. Why is social jetlag a problem? How can you avoid social jetlag? How to create a regular sleep schedule? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Why are some people constantly sexually aroused ? Why are we afraid of the dark? Why do people consider the number seven lucky? Last year, we partnered with Macs Adventure for their Umbria Short Break, a self-guided walking trip through the Italian countryside where we moved from town to town each day while our luggage was transferred ahead for us. It completely changed how we thought about adventure travel. So this year, we decided to experience a different style of trip with Macs Adventure, the Relaxed Trails of Tuscany. Instead of packing up and moving every day, this itinerary slowed things down a little more. We spent multiple nights in each destination, used walking trails to explore both the countryside and the towns themselves, and had more time to get to know Tuscany. In this episode, we're going to share what our days actually looked like on the trail, introduce you to some new friends we made along the way, and talk about why these self-guided walking trips have become one of our favorite ways to experience Europe. If you want to do your best, you'd better get your rest. The quality of your sleep fundamentally affects the quality of your communication. Communicating well, Dr. Cheri Mah says, starts with being well-rested.“Sleep impacts nearly every aspect of how you function,” says Mah, a sleep physician, adjunct lecturer at Stanford Sleep Medicine Center, and internationally recognized expert on sleep and human performance. In her research and work, particularly with elite athletes and professional sports teams, she explores the link between getting rest and doing our best. “If you are getting quality sleep, you can think more clearly, react under pressure, make good judgment calls, have more patience, be more empathetic,” she says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Mah and host Matt Abrahams explore strategies for better sleep, from bedtime routines to paying off “sleep debt” to the “nappuccino” — a caffeine-fueled power nap. Whether you struggle to sleep or can nod off at any time or place, Mah's insights reveal why doing our best requires getting our rest.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Dr. Cheri MahEp.183 Rethinks: How Anxiety Can Fuel Better Communication Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:57) - Sleep & Performance (04:11) - Better Sleep Habits (06:16) - Quieting a Racing Mind (07:49) - Dr. Mah's Night Routine (09:19) - Sleep Extension (10:52) - Preparing for Big Events (11:44) - The Nappuccino (13:21) - Managing Jet Lag (15:56) - Chronotypes Explained (18:00) - Starting the Day with Sleep (19:40) - The Final Three Question (23:57) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors. In this Delirious W.E.S.T. 2026 athlete wrap-up episode, I catch up with Matthew Farrand after his huge journey from London to Western Australia to take on the 200 miler. And what a journey it was. Matthew arrived from the other side of the world, dealt with jet lag, pre-race nerves, cold nights, rain, tracker issues, tired legs, sore knees, sleep deprivation, and the small matter of trying to keep moving for more than 100 hours. As Matthew says in this episode, Delirious doesn't really feel like four days. It feels like one very, very, very long day - with some day and night mixed in. We talk about the early calm at the start line, the mental battle that hit much earlier than expected, the moment he questioned whether he was out of his depth, and the advice from Scott and Shaun that helped get him back up and moving again. From Broke Inlet to Mandalay, Walpole, Giant Tingle Tree, Conspicuous Cliffs, Peaceful Bay, Monkey Rocks, Lowlands, Cozy Corner and finally into Albany - Matthew takes us through the highs, lows, odd little moments, painful steps, and unexpected boosts that carried him forward. There were sleep stops in marquees, on air mattresses, in tents, and even a glorious little dirt nap on a sand dune. There were double espressos from his dad, beautiful volunteers, hot food, pancakes, Eccles cakes, whales, wind turbines that seemed to go on forever, and a knee that decided to make the second half of the race “interesting”. But this episode is also about much more than sore legs. It's about resilience. It's about family. It's about how far the body can go when the mind has already tried to quit several times. And it's about the power of having a reason to keep going - including a note from Matthew's daughter reminding him not to forget to bring home that medal. Matthew also shares how the Delirious podcast helped him believe this race was even possible in the first place, which honestly made me a little emotional. Because that really is what this series is all about - showing that everyday people can take on extraordinary things when they train, believe, keep moving, and surround themselves with the right people. This is a beautiful, funny, honest, and very real 200-mile wrap-up. And yes, Matthew may have said he's retired from 200 milers. We'll see
Fresh off a wild trip to Europe, the guys are BACK and diving straight into chaos
If you've started planning a trip recently, there's a good chance you've opened up an AI tool and asked it to build you an itinerary. And honestly, that's not a bad place to start. You can get ideas quickly. You can compare destinations. You can even map out a rough version of what your trip could look like. Here's where things start to break down because AI doesn't know what it doesn't know. It assumes connections are easy. It assumes timing works. It assumes everything runs exactly the way it's supposed to, and anyone who's traveled, even a little, knows that's not how it works. In this episode, we're going to talk about using a Travel advisor and where AI fits into travel planning, and also where it falls short. We'll also break down how working with a travel advisor actually works, because there's been a lot of misinformation around that lately, especially when it comes to cost. If you're someone who always helps friends and family plan trips, we'll tell you how that could turn into something more. Some links are affiliate links. See our disclosure. Morocco is one of those destinations that sits on a lot of bucket lists. It had been on ours for a really long time. But for most people, it also comes with a lot of questions. How many days do you really need? Is it easy to get around? Should you try to plan it yourself… or work with someone local? And maybe the biggest one, what is Morocco actually like once you get there? What we've learned on this trip is that Morocco isn't just about the places you visit. It's about how you experience them. This episode is a little different. We're recording this from Morocco, sitting outside at our riad by the pool after several days traveling through the desert, the mountains, and local villages and we're going to introduce you to someone who has completely shaped this experience for us. In this episode, we're talking about one of the fastest-growing cruise lines in the industry and one that's doing things very differently, Virgin Voyages. If you've cruised before, or you're considering your next cruise, this is a brand that's probably come up, and it's not just because it's new. It's because Virgin has taken a very different approach to what a cruise experience should feel like, especially for adults. So in this episode, we're sitting down with Mark Harvey from Virgin Voyages to break down what actually makes them different… and more importantly, who it's a good fit for and who it's not because this isn't a cruise line that's trying to be everything to everyone. In this episode of Longevity by Design, host Dr. Gil Blander sits down with Dr. Andrea Maier, Professor in Medicine and Director of the NUS Academy for Healthy Longevity at the National University of Singapore's School of Medicine. They explore what the evidence shows on supplements, and why “test, then treat” beats guesswork.Andrea unpacks a review of over 5 million people: multivitamins may support memory and lower systolic blood pressure in some older or at-risk groups, but offer little for healthy adults. She also reports lab audits of Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) and urolithin A, in which many products fell short of the label claims. She then sorts buzzworthy compounds like alpha-ketoglutarate, spermidine, curcumin, and melatonin by mechanism, trial quality, and fit. Her rule stays simple: measure what you can, match the dose to the need, and track outcomes with walking speed, grip strength, steps, and wearable sleep data over time, not once. Guest-at-a-Glance

We've just returned from one of the most extraordinary trips we've ever taken… Antarctica. This one was especially meaningful because it wasn't just the two of us traveling. We actually hosted this as a group trip through our travel company, Sunshine Travelers Experiences, so we had the opportunity to share this adventure with a group of our listeners and clients. It's one thing to visit a place like this on your own — but sharing it with a group of people who are just as excited about the journey really adds something to the experience. Especially since this is a trip that we have all been looking forward to for over a year now. Since we've been back, we've been getting a lot of questions about the trip. Things like: “Why would someone want to go to Antarctica?” “How do you even get there?” “Isn't it incredibly cold?” And of course… “How much does it cost?” So today we're going to answer some of the most common questions we've been hearing. We'll talk about how you get to Antarctica, what it's actually like when you arrive, what the Drake Passage crossing was like for us, and some of the experiences that made this trip unforgettable. In this episode, we're focusing on Antarctica itself. In our next episode, we'll talk more about the expedition cruise experience and the ship we sailed on. Some links are affiliate links. See our disclosure. Note: Cover photo is the actual photos of us doing the polar plunge but has been photoshopped to include both Melissa and Scott in the same frame but indeed you do the polar plunge individually and under the strict rules and supervision of the expedition team and crew. If you work with athletes who travel, tell me if you've seen this before. They fly across the country, and when they show up, something just feels off. Reaction time is slow. They’re moody and irritable. OR they're just tired flat when it really matters. And we usually treat it like it's just a sleep […] The post How Elite Athletes Manage Jet Lag and Travel Fatigue to Optimize Performance with Tom Clark appeared first on Robertson Training Systems.
This episode covers: • Mic-628 Could Reset Your Body Clock and Cut Jet Lag in Half A new circadian drug candidate, Mic-628, has demonstrated the ability to shift the body's internal clock and significantly reduce jet-lag recovery time in early human studies. In controlled simulations, participants experienced faster realignment of their sleep-wake cycles and improved daytime performance compared to standard approaches like melatonin and light timing alone. Dave explains how this compound targets a core clock pathway, why eastbound travel is biologically harder than westbound, and how pharmacologic chronotherapy could become a serious performance tool for frequent travelers and shift workers. He also connects circadian alignment to obesity, insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk, and cognitive decline, outlining what this breakthrough could mean if safety data continues to hold. • Source: https://www.sciencedaily.com/news/top/ • Late-Life Depression May Signal Parkinson's or Dementia New research from Shanghai Jiao Tong University found that new-onset depression in older adults is strongly associated with increased risk of Parkinson's disease and dementia. Dave reframes this finding as a brain health signal rather than a purely psychiatric issue, explaining how inflammation, microglial activation, vascular health, and neurodegeneration intersect with mood changes. He breaks down why sudden depression in someone with no prior history may warrant deeper cognitive testing, sleep evaluation, and metabolic screening instead of simply prescribing an antidepressant and moving on. This story highlights the importance of treating mood shifts as early biological data in a longevity framework. • Source: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/02/260210040623.htm • Speed-Training Brain Games Reduced Dementia Risk by 25 Percent The long-running NIH-funded ACTIVE trial found that a specific speed-of-processing training program reduced dementia incidence by roughly 25 percent over two decades. Unlike memory or reasoning exercises, this visual processing speed protocol produced measurable long-term protection. Dave explains why reaction time and processing speed may be core capacities tied to cognitive resilience, and how structured brain-training programs descended from this research can be treated like strength training for the mind. Instead of vague advice to “stay mentally active,” this data supports building deliberate, trackable cognitive training into a midlife longevity plan. • Sources: – NPR summary: https://www.npr.org/2026/02/09/nx-s1-5702423/modest-mental-exercise-can-reduce-risk-of-dementia-for-decades-study-finds – Psychology Today analysis: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/build-your-brain/202602/new-study-means-the-age-of-dementia-prevention-begins-now • Moderate Coffee Intake Linked to Slower Brain Aging A large analysis of roughly 130,000 participants found that moderate coffee consumption, about one to three cups daily, was associated with markers of slower brain aging and lower dementia risk. Dave explains why moderate, morning-weighted caffeine intake may align acute performance benefits with potential long-term brain protection. He breaks down the dose curve, why more is not necessarily better, and how to use coffee strategically without compromising sleep or circadian rhythm. Rather than framing caffeine as either a miracle or a villain, this study supports intelligent, personalized dosing as part of a broader brain-health stack. • Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-00409-y • Kratom Crackdowns and the Future of Supplement Freedom Regulators are tightening restrictions on high-potency kratom derivatives such as 7-hydroxymitragynine, with new bans and stricter warning requirements emerging at the state level. The FDA continues to treat kratom and its concentrated derivatives as unapproved drugs with opioid-like effects, while local jurisdictions are targeting specific formulations linked to adverse events. Dave breaks down how this represents a broader shift in how edge-case compounds are regulated, why supply volatility and underground markets can increase risk, and what this means for biohackers who experiment with gray-area tools. He also explains how evolving enforcement strategies could shape future access to peptides, nootropics, and other advanced compounds. • Sources: – Kansas City coverage: https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/strong-high-weak-laws-7-oh-ban-kratom-regulation-moves-forward-in-kansas-city-missouri – Florida policy coverage: https://www.wgcu.org/health/2026-02-04/kratom-advocates-tout-its-properties-but-legislators-want-strict-warnings-about-the-herbal-supplement – Legal landscape analysis: https://www.lumalexlaw.com/2025/10/09/kratoms-legal-future-how-states-and-the-federal-government-are-responding/ – FDA background: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-and-kratom All source links are provided for direct access to the original reporting and research.
