Susanna Coleman, Administrative Assistant

In the latest episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast, hosts Dan and Katie head back to South Florida to sit down with Susanna Coleman, an Administrative Assistant in WGI's Fort Lauderdale office! Susanna's story is one of curiosity, reinvention, and an unshakable love of learning. From the south side of Chicago to the shipyards of Scandinavia, Susanna has lived what she jokingly calls "several lives" — and each one has shaped the curious, people-loving teammate she is today. This is one conversation you won't want to miss. From the South Side of Chicago to South Florida Born and raised in a tight-knit, blue-collar suburb just south of Chicago, Susanna grew up as a self-described "total '80s kid." She and her sister walked to school, rode bikes around the neighborhood, and stayed out until their mom called them in. Family and culture were at the heart of it all. Her father immigrated from central Mexico in his twenties, and with both sides of her family rooted in Mexican heritage, Susanna grew up immersed in the culture, the language, and the food. Each year, the family made the epic three-day drive from Chicago to Celaya, Guanajuato — armed with coloring books, crayons, and a lasting appreciation for the great state of Texas, which never seemed to end. Even as a kid, Susanna sensed that Chicago wasn't her forever home. Standing at a bus stop in negative-degree weather, she remembers thinking, "There has to be something better." That instinct would eventually carry her south. Several Lives, One Common Thread After heading to Southern Illinois University, Susanna earned a degree in photo production technology, the technical, chemistry-driven side of photography. A professor's recommendation led to her first career with Noritsu, a company that manufactured one-hour photo lab equipment. For the next nine years, she traveled the world installing and balancing photo equipment, covering Central and South America and even outfitting brand-new cruise ships in the shipyards of Finland and Sweden. She filled two passports and visited nearly every country in Central America along the way. When the photo industry went digital, Susanna took a leap. A lifelong lover of teaching and the outdoors, she found her place at Camp Live Oak, operating out of Birch State Park in Fort Lauderdale. What began as an on-site director role grew into 18 years as associate director. She did a little of everything, from canoeing and archery to art and science, and shepherded the camp through its rigorous American Camp Association accreditation every three years. Ready for a change after nearly two decades outdoors, Susanna spent three years as a clinic manager at a health and wellness practice, sharpening her operations and HR skills before realizing healthcare wasn't her long-term fit. Finding Her Place at WGI The throughline in every chapter of Susanna's career is simple: she loves to learn. "If the subject interests me, I will dive in headfirst," she says — reading, asking questions, and digging into the "why" behind everything. That same curiosity is exactly what she brought to WGI. This August will mark three years with the firm, and Susanna says she's finally fluent in the acronyms and the surprising amount of work that goes into building a road (IYKYK). No two days look the same. Susanna keeps the office running while managing events and conferences across WGI's Customer Support Manager, supporting HR initiatives, helping plan Engineers' Week, and lending a hand wherever her teammates need her. As one of WGI's busiest hosting offices, Fort Lauderdale always has something happening, and Susanna is often the person behind the scenes making sure it all runs smoothly. Life Outside the Office These days, much of Susanna's time is happily spent at the ballfield, cheering on her daughter's softball games and her son's travel baseball. When she carves out time for herself, she returns to her first love: photography. She's an active member of 52 Clicks, an Instagram community of photographers who shoot a new themed prompt each week and trade feedback. Her medium of choice is black-and-white portraiture, and she's planning a portrait series of her book club friends, complete with a small gallery opening at the end of the year! At home, she's joined by Lupita, a 12-year-old boxer mix affectionately known as "Lupita La Loca." And her hidden talent? Susanna is a gifted party host — a skill she credits to her mother. She has a knack for making everyone feel welcome, connecting guests who might never have met otherwise, and bringing the energy the moment the party starts. A Few Fun Surprises True to WGI Unleashed form, the episode is packed with games and a few great reveals. Susanna is fully confident she'd survive a zombie apocalypse (camp-director skills, a trusty sword, and all), and she nearly stumped Dan and Katie with a round of Two Truths and a Lie. Did she go to high school with a young Kanye West? You'll have to listen to hear the rest. Tune In Susanna's journey is a reminder that there's no single path to a meaningful career. Sometimes it's the curiosity to keep learning and the courage to reinvent yourself that lead you exactly where you're meant to be. Study right now and get proficient with tools like Anthropic, tools like, you know, ChatGPT's Codex, tools like, you know, Gemini's Nano Banana, and, like, PaperBanana, the new one that they just announced. You have to be proficient in this space and be certified in this space, too. Like, Claude just announced a certification program. You can go get certified as, like, an Anthropic Claude architect. It's free. You can do it. Like, these are things that I think you need to have on your resume to position yourself for value, regardless of what strategy you take. If you want to go into strategy consulting or Big Four or technology, having those new skills on how to create agent capabilities for clients is going to be the table stakes to separating yourself from, I think, other people who are also looking to go into consulting.Adapting to AI with caution26:15: I don't think you should stop AI adoption because of that potential, but I think it's important to understand that there's things that you can do right now to enhance productivity by using these tool sets. There's other things that require, I think, a little bit more due diligence, and is it the right decision to completely re-architect the way we work with agents? Because what's good for Anthropic and how they might not be the best thing for your company long term. What makes a good consultant29:10: A good consultant is not afraid to ask questions, to push clients, and, kind of, challenge thinking. I think there's an art to being able to do that without offending and pissing clients off, and understanding when you have the opportunity to, kind of, push hard to get clients thinking in a different way. I think the other key part is being able to be hungry for any opportunity and not scared to learn any new topic, right? Because the nature of consulting is that you're being thrown into a bunch of different businesses, and no matter how much you've worked in a specific industry or at, like, businesses, there's always going to be something new that they're doing, whether it's from a technology that they're using, a process that they're following, the nomenclature that they're using.Show Links: Learn more about EPAMTranscriptGuest Profile:David Aldrich | Rice BusinessDavid Aldrich | LinkedIn

This week on the Oakley Podcast, Jeremy Kellett takes the Oakley Podcast on the road to the Port 33 terminal in Catoosa, Oklahoma to introduce listeners to dispatchers Bennett Potter and Ray Steuber. They share their backgrounds from Bennett's path through the Army and graphic design into trucking, to Ray's move from Wisconsin and prior experience dispatching frack sand, as well as their personal lives, hobbies like pickleball, fishing, and trading cards, and what their weekends look like. The conversation dives into the realities of dispatching at Oakley: managing 40–50 drivers each, constant phone calls, planning loads around hours of service, emphasizing safety at dump sites, and balancing regulations with the human limits of fatigue. They discuss building trust and communication with drivers, why some owner operators leave (often pay expectations and home time), and how Oakley's higher standards and dependable drivers make the job rewarding. Josh Ferguson, Partner at Freeman Mathis and Gary LLP and 22-year insurance defense attorney, joins Phil to share legal insights from defending snow and ice management contractors nationwide. From handling salt shortages with proper contract language, to navigating multi-tier liability claims, to why lost text messages can sink a defense, Josh reveals why documentation is the foundation of legal protection, why the red pen approach works on client contracts, and why proactive general counsel work delivers the best ROI for contractors who want to avoid expensive litigation down the road. Snow Fighters Institute Snowfighters Youtube Channel ⭐️ Leave us a review! Key Learnings Document, Document, Document - Documentation is the single most important defense in any lawsuit, from preseason site maps to in-event records to follow-up ice watch notes. Force Majeure Clauses Need Salt Specificity - Generic act of God clauses aren't enough; specifically identify salt shortages in your contract to limit liability when supply issues arise. Red Pen Every Client Contract - Mark up every client contract you receive because even rejected markups help you understand your risk exposure points. Detach Your Contract as an Addendum - When clients have rigid contracts, propose attaching your scope of work and protective language as an addendum, which works more often than expected. Lost Text Messages Sink Defenses - Communications stored on personal phones disappear when employees leave, creating spoliation charges that work against you in court. Use Platforms with Built-In Texting - Systems like Team Engine store communications by company rather than personal phones, protecting you when seasonal employees leave. Document Subcontractor Capabilities - Negligent hiring claims require proof that subcontractors had the manpower, equipment, and history to service sites properly. Mirror Client and Subcontractor Agreements - Gaps between your client contract and subcontractor agreements create exposure points that plaintiff's attorneys exploit. Stay Involved in Insurance Claims - The squeaky wheel gets the grease; staying involved with carriers and defense attorneys leads to better outcomes over your career. Personal Injury Lawyers Are Targeting Snow - Big law firms now handle slip and fall cases with more experts, ramped-up injuries, and multi-defendant strategies for bigger payouts. Multi-Tier Liability Creates Multiple Pots - Plaintiff's counsel add negligent hiring claims to reach property owners, managers, contractors, and subcontractors for more money sources. Emergency Response Within Hours Matters - Getting attorneys and experts on-site quickly protects privileged conversations and preserves evidence before witnesses change their stories. Proactive General Counsel Beats Reactive Defense - Working with attorneys before claims happen provides better ROI than dealing with lawsuits after they're filed. Salt Shortage Documentation Required - When experiencing supply shortages, document the actual shortage with proof from suppliers in addition to having protective contract language. Reflection Questions How are you managing electronic communications between your team and clients, and would your text message records survive a lawsuit two to four years down the road? Do you have documentation proving your subcontractors are capable of servicing the sites they're assigned to, or could a negligent hiring claim catch you unprepared? Are you treating contract review and legal counsel as a proa... WGI Unleashed

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2026 41:08

In this episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast, we head to Fort Lauderdale to catch up with Kristen Nowicki, Senior Project Manager on WGI's Planning team. From her early days climbing trees in Pennsylvania to helping shape communities across South Florida, Kristen's story is equal parts thoughtful, driven, and refreshingly down to earth. We also learned one very important thing right away: she could eat pineapple pizza every day for the rest of her life. That might be the boldest take we've had on the podcast yet. From Tree Hugger to Planner Kristen's path into planning was anything but linear, and it makes perfect sense when you hear her story. Growing up just outside Philadelphia, she spent a lot of time outdoors, which sparked an early interest in the environment. That passion led her to study environmental science at the University of Florida. But somewhere along the way, her perspective shifted. Instead of trying to stop development, she realized the real opportunity was in shaping it responsibly. That mindset led her back to school for a master's in urban and regional planning and into a career where she could balance growth with environmental and community needs. Finding Her Lane at WGI Since joining WGI in 2020, Kristen has expanded her role beyond traditional planning. She now works across multidisciplinary teams, manages complex projects, and plays a key role in business development. From municipal planning efforts to private development projects, her work covers a wide range of services. One standout example is a recent affordable housing project designed for seniors on fixed incomes, a meaningful contribution to a growing need in South Florida. What she enjoys most? The ability to take ownership of her career. At WGI, Kristen has found the flexibility to explore new opportunities, build relationships, and grow her impact. It's not about staying in a box. It's about stepping outside of it and making things happen. Building Connections That Matter Kristen is deeply involved in the planning community through organizations like the American Planning Association, where she has taken on leadership roles and helped organize major industry events. For her, these connections are a way to stay engaged, keep learning, and contribute to the future of the profession. Whether it's mentoring students, speaking at conferences, or collaborating with peers, she's all in. Planning for People One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is Kristen's perspective on planning itself.  Land use, zoning, and development approvals are all a part of the gig, but ultimately, it's about people. From public spaces to housing to infrastructure, every project impacts how communities live, work, and connect. Kristen approaches her work with that bigger picture in mind, always considering how decisions today will shape experiences tomorrow. Life Outside the Office When she's not managing projects or attending industry events, Kristen is making the most of everything South Florida has to offer. She's a Yelp Elite reviewer, always on the hunt for new restaurants and local spots. She enjoys checking out festivals, live music, and anything that brings people together. And in the kitchen, she's taken things to another level with homemade kombucha, hot sauce, and just about anything she can experiment with. She also keeps things growing with a small hydroponic garden, proving that once a "tree hugger," always a "tree hugger." Tune In Kristen's story is a great reminder that careers don't have to follow a straight path. With the right mindset, a willingness to adapt, and a focus on people, you can build something meaningful along the way. At WGI, every associate brings a unique story to the table, but few start on a remote fishing island in Alaska and end up leading cutting-edge geospatial solutions across the country. In this episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast, Dan and Katie sit down with Scott Jones, Technical Solutions Manager on our Geospatial + Land Surveying team, to talk about a career path shaped by adventure, curiosity, and a willingness to solve problems in some of the most challenging environments imaginable. A Childhood Built for Adventure Scott's story begins in Petersburg, Alaska, a small fishing community where getting anywhere requires a boat or a plane and where imagination fills the gaps between long winters and remote living. His introduction to surveying came through a high school class that quickly turned into something much bigger. One of his first projects involved surveying a glacier by helicopter, an experience that sparked a lifelong interest in the field and set the tone for everything that followed. From Screenwriting Dreams to Surveying Reality Surveying wasn't always the plan. Scott originally pursued creative writing in college with the goal of becoming a screenwriter. That changed after landing an internship with the Alaska Department of Transportation, where he spent his summers traveling across the state collecting geospatial data. What started as a job quickly became a turning point. The combination of travel, technical work, and real-world impact pulled him away from writing and into a career in geomatics. Surveying at the Edge of the World Before joining WGI, Scott built his experience in environments that most people would never encounter on the job. Working in Alaska meant navigating extreme terrain, unpredictable conditions, and projects that required constant adaptation. One of the most memorable was a remote "Road to Nowhere" survey effort that pushed crews deep into the wilderness for months at a time. From coordinating helicopter access to dealing with wildlife and harsh conditions, the work demanded resilience, creativity, and a strong understanding of the field. Bringing That Experience to WGI Today, Scott applies that same mindset at WGI, where no two days look the same. As a Technical Solutions Manager, he moves between projects, helping teams identify challenges, develop workflows, and find practical solutions that keep work moving forward. His role spans aerial operations, Lidar processing, GIS support, and everything in between. What sets his approach apart is a focus on execution. Big ideas matter, but for Scott, success comes from turning those ideas into real, actionable results. Projects That Push Boundaries Scott has been involved in several standout projects during his time with WGI, including a highly coordinated Grand Canyon mapping effort that required extensive planning across multiple agencies and airspace approvals. Another favorite took him to White Sands National Park, where Lidar technology was used to help identify prehistoric sloth footprints. It's a perfect example of how WGI's work blends advanced technology with unique, real-world applications. Why WGI? For Scott, it comes down to the people. He highlighted the value of working with teams that take pride in what they do and hold themselves to a high standard. That shared mindset creates an environment where collaboration is strong and the work is meaningful. It also opens the door for growth. At WGI, associates aren't limited to one role or skill set. There are constant opportunities to expand, learn, and contribute in new ways. Life Outside the Office While his days of fishing in Alaska may be behind him, Scott hasn't lost his sense of adventure. In Huntsville, he's traded ocean waters for kayaking, discovered a passion for caving, and continues to explore the outdoors in new ways. It's a different landscape, but the same mindset that has guided his career from the beginning. Final Thoughts Scott's journey is a reminder that there's no single path to success. From creative writing aspirations to leading technical solutions at WGI, his story is built on adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to take on new challenges. And like many of the stories featured on WGI Unleashed, it reinforces what makes WGI unique—the people, the experiences, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger. On this episode of Discover Lafayette, we sit down with two leaders deeply involved in shaping student career readiness at University of Louisiana at Lafayette: Brandi Hollier, Director of the B.I. Moody College of Business Internship Program, and Kim Billeaudeau, Director of the Office of Career Services. Together, they share how internships, professional preparation, and employer partnerships come together to help students transition confidently from the classroom into the workforce — while also supporting local businesses looking to grow talent. Kim Billeaudeau: A Career Built on Mentorship Kim Billeaudeau has served in Career Services for 25 years, including nearly 19 years as director. A Louisiana native from Opelousas, Kim's journey began close to home. “I grew up right down the street in Opelousas, and I taught high school,” she shared. After earning her degree from UL and teaching high school for two years, she realized her passion was helping students navigate life beyond graduation. “I remembered mentors that I had as a student at UL Lafayette; professional staff members who saw something in me as a student leader,” Kim said. “When Career Services came available, it was perfect.” Over the years, Kim has helped students with résumés, interviewing, dining etiquette, career fairs, and professional presence. She still sees the long-term impact today. “They'll say, ‘Miss Kim, you taught me dining etiquette' or ‘you helped me with my résumé.' What I do is amazing, and I'm so blessed to be able to help students each and every day, to graduate and be successful from our institution.” Professional Skills Beyond the Classroom Kim emphasized that many students simply haven't had exposure to professional environments before. “Sometimes students don't have an opportunity to put on professional clothing or go through a four or five course meal,” she explained. “The more we can provide them that hands-on experience, that's part of the education experience.” Career Services offers mock interviews, interview preparation, and coaching on everything from researching employers to follow-up thank-you notes. “We do a lot of mock interviews with students. Everything from preparing for the interview, not only choosing what to wear, but researching the company, getting notes together, thinking of what questions you can ask in the interview and getting them to understand that it’s a two way street. Everything to giving a good firm handshake, introducing yourself, when to sit, where to sit, looking the employer in the eye, smiling, and then answering interview questions. And then the follow up with thank you, and online applications. We coach students all through the process.” Kim is also a certified etiquette consultant through The Etiquette Institute and completed refresher training on post-COVID etiquette, which she now incorporates into student preparation. Brandi Guidry Hollier: From Student to Professor to Internship Director Brandi Hollier is an associate professor in the Department of Management and has served as Director of the Moody College of Business Internship Program for more than 12 years. A Lafayette native, her career path has come full circle. She’s currently the recipient of two endowed professorships. “I was born and raised here in Lafayette, Louisiana. I kind of grew up at UL,” Brandi said. She earned both her undergraduate degree and MBA from UL before starting as an adjunct instructor, later becoming full-time faculty and earning her doctorate. “There are professors at the university that have taught me that I now work with, which is a beautiful thing.” Brandi also oversees internship programming that connects students with real-world experience before graduation. “There are opportunities to go out into an organization and get some professional experience prior to entering the workforce,” she said. “It's my honor and it's a blessing to be able to help students in doing that.” Research, Technology, and the Changing Business Landscape Brandi's research focuses on technology adoption, including telemedicine, artificial intelligence, and personality in human-computer interaction, work that directly influences how she teaches. “Artificial intelligence is here to stay,” she noted. “We have to allow students the opportunity to engage with that, and teach them how to properly do so within ethical realms.” She emphasized that curriculum is evolving to reflect rapid changes in technology and business practices. Internships: Events, Employers, and Real Connections Through collaboration with Career Services, the Moody College of Business offers internship panels, employer seminars, networking receptions, and career fair prep seminars. One standout event is the business internship networking reception held at the UL Lafayette Alumni Center. “Resumes are not brought in. We discourage that,” Brandi explained. “We just want them to have a conversation.” Employers often leave these events already knowing who they intend to hire or having significantly narrowed their candidate pool. “Small, medium, large sized enterprises — we welcome any and all,” she said. Handshake: A Central Portal for Students and Employers Both offices rely on Handshake, a centralized online portal where employers can post internships, part-time, and full-time positions at no cost. “It's all online,” Kim said. “Handshake is really a powerful tool.” All UL Lafayette students automatically have access and can build profiles with résumés, cover letters, and skills. Alumni also retain access. Paid vs. Unpaid Internships and Academic Credit Brandi explained that guidance comes from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which encourages compensated internships whenever possible. Students may also earn academic credit if the internship aligns with their major and is approved through a multi-step process involving the employer, department coordinator, and internship office. “It's a three-hour credit,” Brandi noted, often taken as an elective, though required in some programs. Preparing Students — and Employers Both Kim and Brandi emphasized that their offices support not only students, but also employers who may not know where to begin. “We never want it to be frustrating for a company to hire a student,” Kim said. “We can help make the connections.” They also encourage employers to think ahead, create clear job descriptions, provide orientation, mentorship, and regular feedback. “That feedback loop is so very important,” Brandi stressed. Confidence, Clothing, and the Career Closet One of the most impactful resources discussed was the Career Closet, which provides free professional clothing to students. “We had over 700 students take items out of the closet last semester,” Kim shared. Students keep the clothing, helping ease financial barriers to professional attire. UL Lafayette students can shop for up to 16 free professional clothing items per semester to prepare for events such as interviews, banquets, student organization events, and much more. Career Services also offers free professional headshots at career fairs. “They'll say, ‘I can't wait to send this to my mom,'” Kim said. “They get so much pride seeing themselves in that professional photo.” Donations of gently used professional clothing and accessories are encouraged and much needed. For more information on how you can contribute, please visit https://louisiana.edu/career/students-alumni/career-closet Advice for Students Brandi Holllier shared, “One of my favorite questions, and I do share this with students to ask at the end of the interview is, ‘How would I get feedback on my job performance if hired?’ That shows the company you want their feedback. You want to learn, you want to grow. You know, that’s the experience. It’s about learning and growing. I feel that’s a really great question for students to pose in an interview.” Both Kim and Brandi strongly encourage students to maintain a professional online presence. “Employers will search you online,” Brandi noted, emphasizing the importance of LinkedIn and being mindful of social media and what photos you share online. Life Outside of Work Outside of campus, Brandi enjoys reading and occasionally playing piano alongside her daughter. TV is not a part of her life, and her quiet, beautifully serene nature is reflected in her wise choices as to how she spends her free time. Kim, meanwhile, is currently actively wearing the hat of wedding planner as her daughter prepares for an April 2026 wedding. “Every moment I have outside of my job is spent on wedding planning,” she said with a big smile. This conversation offers a valuable look at how UL Lafayette prepares students for professional success — and how local employers can engage meaningfully with the next generation of talent.

#205 - Some stories don't just move you—they recalibrate your sense of what's possible. Adriene Caldwell grew up in the crosshairs of untreated schizophrenia, constant relocation, and a home life that spun from denial to violence. After losing the grandmother who shielded her, she entered a foster system that should have offered stability and instead delivered degradation: separate dishes, floor seating, and rules designed to remind her she didn't belong. The stats she shares are brutal—one in five inmates are former foster youth, seven in ten foster girls have a child by 21, and fewer than three percent use free college benefits—but the real shock is how incentives often reward keeping kids “high need” rather than helping them heal. What changed her trajectory was a lifeline she claimed for herself: a coveted congressional exchange to Germany. There, a host family modeled warmth, boundaries, and trust. Adriene learned German the hard way—by speaking it every day—aced tough classes at a college-track school, and felt the shift that happens when someone insists you sit in the front seat for the view. Returning stateside just shy of 18, she found no plan waiting and wrote letters up the chain until one emerged. Along the way, a third-grade math teacher delivered hotel toiletries to a housing project, and a fierce English teacher stocked her classroom with computers and left one to Adriene before she died. Those acts—practical, personal, and precisely timed—became stepping stones to scholarships and a future she couldn't yet picture. We also explore why Adriene wrote Unbroken, Life Outside the Lines, and how revisiting old case files forced a reckoning with both the parts of survival that became manipulation and the parts that deserve pride. Her message to teens at the edge is simple and urgent: your life won't always look like this, and soon your choices will shape what comes next—numbing or healing, hiding or asking, repeating or rebuilding. If this conversation resonates, share it with someone who needs proof that change is possible. In this episode, hosts Dan and Katie take listeners behind the camera to spotlight Maria's creative journey, the role she plays in shaping WGI's multimedia content, and the passion she brings to telling stories through video. From her early artistic roots to her role producing podcasts, training videos, and campaign visuals, Maria's story shows how curiosity, resilience, and creativity can lead to an exciting and impactful career at WGI. Early Creativity and Artistic Beginnings Maria's passion for art began at a young age while growing up just down the road from her current residence in Delray Beach, FL. From drawing in sketchbooks to exploring perspective and composition, she always gravitated toward creative expression. That foundation pushed her to explore graphic design in school and shaped her aspirations as a visual storyteller. Her childhood interests weren't just hobbies. They became the building blocks for a career focused on creativity, design, and communication, a path that would eventually bring her to WGI. Finding Her Place in Design and Multimedia After earning her associate degree in graphic design, Maria worked in various design and marketing roles where she sharpened her skills. But she knew she wanted impactful mentorship and collaboration within a creative team — something she didn't always find earlier in her career. That realization helped guide her decision to join WGI shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic. She was drawn to a culture that fostered teamwork, continuous learning, and opportunities to experiment with new creative mediums. Jumping Into Video Production at WGI Once on the Creative Services team, Maria found herself quickly stepping into video production. Within weeks of joining, she was producing and editing content across formats — from internal training videos and podcasts to dynamic marketing pieces and campaign visuals. Maria credits her willingness to "learn as she goes" and her curiosity for mastering new tools and workflows. Taking on challenges with confidence and grit has helped her grow her skill set and expand her creative reach at WGI. Creative Freedom and Impactful Collaboration One of Maria's favorite parts of working at WGI is the trust placed in her to contribute ideas and shape visual content. She thrives on the creative freedom the role offers and enjoys collaborating with teams across the firm. Whether she's supporting YES Week with vibrant visuals, crafting cinematic proposal videos, or producing the recordings you hear on WGI Unleashed, Maria embraces projects that allow her to blend creativity with purpose. Life Outside the Editing Desk When she's not editing or designing, Maria is immersed in the things she loves most: playing video games, engaging in Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, and caring for her growing collection of plants. Her sense of humor and vibrant personality come through in every conversation, offering listeners a genuine look at the person behind the camera. Tune In for a Creative Conversation This episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about the creative process, the art of storytelling through video, and what it's like to build a multimedia career in a collaborative environment. Wake up, baby. We're back with the doubleheader weekends. A formal interview will be dropping later today... one of the biggest talents in high school in 2026.This episode, however, has a different tone. I open up about my life outside of the sport of running as we enter the new year. I am as transparent and clear-cut as possible about my mental and emotional state after my junior cross-country season and how I am getting right with myself this new year. This goes far beyond the objective results and the times. This is existential. I explore what true meaning and pursuit looks like, and the hidden cost of obsession. The weight of passion. I hope someone can relate to my message and what I have to say. Happy New Year to all! I hope you had a lovely holiday season with family and friends and that you are ready to attack 2026.

Send us a textThere's a growing trend today where many marriages resemble close friendships more than marriages. Couples are sleeping in separate bedrooms, but many aren't seeking a divorce. I would argue that it is often the husbands who are leading this trend of not fulfilling their roles as real partners. So, what is a wife to do?https://www.instagram.com/traceylau99/

In the final episode of 2025, the WGI Unleashed Podcast heads to West Palm Beach as hosts Dan and Katie sit down with Jill Mathison, a long-time member of WGI's Geospatial team! Jill's story is one of persistence, adaptability, and wholehearted commitment. From her early days growing up on Long Island to helping shape WGI through years of growth and transformation, Jill's journey reflects what it truly means to build a career with intention. From Long Island to South Florida Born in New York and raised on Long Island, Jill grew up surrounded by creativity and culture. Thanks to a mother who loved the arts, childhood trips into Manhattan included Broadway shows, Radio City Music Hall, and unforgettable memories like watching Herbie the Love Bug perform high above the audience. At age 11, Jill and her family relocated to South Florida, where her parents opened their own automotive business. While leaving home was bittersweet, the move sparked Jill's excitement for new opportunities and fresh starts, a theme that would follow her throughout her career. Finding Her Path Through Business Like many great career stories, Jill's path was anything but linear. She initially explored computer science before realizing it was not quite the right fit. A switch to business management at Broward Community College and later Florida Atlantic University opened the door to a wide range of opportunities. Over the years, Jill worked across insurance, direct response marketing, and construction. She even spent 17 years with an electrical contractor, growing from administrative support to project management and eventually purchasing management. Along the way, she built strong relationships, learned the ins and outs of operations, and picked up skills that would later become a huge asset at WGI. A Bold Move That Led Back Home In 2010, during a tough job market, Jill decided to take a proactive approach. After submitting her resume to WGI, she picked up the phone and followed up directly. That call led to her first role with the firm. While the position started as temporary, Jill made it clear she was invested. When a permanent opportunity opened up later, she returned and this time, she was here to stay. Since then, Jill has seen WGI grow from a small firm with manual timesheets and filing cabinets into the dynamic, multidisciplinary company it is today. She has been part of the journey every step of the way. Growing With WGI Jill's role has evolved right alongside the company. What started with administrative support expanded into fleet coordination, safety initiatives, and operational leadership within the Geospatial group. She has supported major projects like the Brightline High-Speed Rail Project and I-595 Expansion in Ft Lauderdale, helping teams navigate complex logistics and field operations. One area she is especially passionate about is safety. From early involvement to today's robust programs, Jill takes pride in helping create a culture where associates look out for one another and speak up when it matters. Life Outside the Office Outside of work, Jill's life is just as full. She is a proud mom, stepmom, and self-described caretaker of a "zoo," including rescue dogs, a cat, and even red-footed tortoises. When she is not managing her household menagerie, Jill enjoys staying active through karate, a hobby she shares with her daughter, as well as dancing, shopping, and spending time with friends and family. Advice for the Next Generation When asked what advice she would give to those just starting their careers, Jill's answer is simple and powerful: always give your best. Showing up fully, staying responsive, and committing to excellence are principles she has lived by throughout her career and ones that continue to define her impact at WGI. This episode is a reminder that meaningful careers are built step by step, shaped by persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to grow alongside the people and organizations you believe in. This is one you don't want to miss! So, tune in, and as always, stay curious, stay driven, and keep unleashing your full potential! How can we help recruiters advocate for us in a tough job market? According to people industry veteran Christy Honeycutt, our guest in episode 353, it starts with being kind and translating your experience into something a recruiter can understand. And even more importantly, it takes practice. In part 2 of our discussion with Christy, she translates deep experience in talent acquisition and recruitment that gives us insight into the current job market. You'll hear more details about the nuances of RPOs (recruitment process outsourcers), the difference between job hugging and job abandonment, and the importance of personal branding and differentiation. Stay until the end when Christy shares her reasons for turning down C-suite positions and how clarity on her long-term goals is carrying her forward into what's next. Now that you've heard someone model it for you, how will you translate your own experience? If you missed part 1 of our discussion with Christy, check out Episode 352 – People First: Systematizing Go-to-Market for Your Role with Christy Honeycutt (1/2). Original Recording Date: 09-30-2025 Topics – A Deeper Look at Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO), Translating Your Experience with 3 Wins, Bad Actors and Leadership in the People Industry, Today's Job Market and Life Outside the C-Suite 2:56 – A Deeper Look at Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) When it comes to RPO (recruitment process outsourcing), is this a one-size-fits-all approach, or does it show up differently depending on what a company needs? In Christy's experience, most RPO organizations offer services like executive search, but they may offer full RPO, which usually involves hiring more than 500 people per year. Normally an RPO brings a mix of skills to the table. A client may want the RPO to take only talent acquisition or may want to control offer management, but they may want the RPO to take everything (attracting new talent, offer management, coordinating with HR for new employee onboarding). “If a company wants it a certain way, they can stop it at a certain point…. But most RPOs, full RPOs, is attraction to offer accepted and then it tees over to the HR team.” – Christy Honeycutt John has worked for companies where the recruitment or talent acquisition personnel were marked as contractors in the internal global address book but had company e-mail addresses. Would this mean the personnel are contracting directly with a company or working through an RPO? Christy says it could be either scenario. When she managed an RPO earlier in her career, they were most successful when the client encouraged the RPO to brand as the company. Someone might indicate they do recruitment for a specific company on LinkedIn but be an employee of an RPO. Christy tells us how important it is for the RPO to understand an organization's mission, vision, benefits, and culture because the RPO is often attracting talent and selling people on why they should apply and interview. “When you think about recruitment and talent acquisition, regardless, it's a lot of marketing because you've got a really cool position and you've got to find the perfect fit.” – Christy Honeycutt 5:55 – Translating Your Experience with 3 Wins Right now, recruiters and talent acquisition professionals have a distinct challenge. Many resumes look the same because candidates are using AI tools. “What people think is helping set them apart is actually making them look more similar. So now you've got recruiters and talent acquisition; they don't know if these are fake resumes. They don't know if they're real. And they're getting on the call with these people and finding out they are fake; they don't have any of this requirement.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy shares a little secret about learning recruitment. She gives the example of a recruiter needing to recruit for an executive level role in technology. Recruiters are encouraged to seek out and find the C-players to practice asking them questions, understand nuance, and grasp the terminology. This is a training exercise. Following this process, a recruiter would then have more credibility once they speak to the A-players they actually want to hire. “What I would encourage is if you are a C-player, you're not going to know it. Just be kind and know that the person you're talking to has never held a technical role (probably, most likely)…and might not understand half the stuff that you guys do. The acronyms aren't going to be the same. Just be gracious with them because the more you can help them translate your experience, the better you're going to be positioned to get you over the line…. They don't want to talk to 10 people to get 1 hire. They want to talk to 3 people to get a hire…. And remember that the TA, HR, recruiters, whatever you want to call them…there's a pretty good chance that they want to help you and that they're doing the job because they like people. And I think they get a bad rap.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy tells us about something called a slate (a group of 3-5 individuals who apply for a job that a recruiter will go and interview). Recruiters are using AI to help filter through applications. “The biggest thing I can tell you is be your own person. Be your own, authentic person. Have your stories of how you've shown up and shown out…. I tell everybody for every job that you've worked at, you need to have 3 wins…. Figure out…your top things that you accomplished at each role and have that and be ready to speak to it. And then…ask questions. Interview them too…. Make sure it's a culture fit for you.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy says things like the great resignation and quiet quitting are just behaviors that get repeated over time. Right now, there is a fearful state of job hugging. “We're job hugging. No one is hugging a job. People are trying to stay employed in the market. That's all it is.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy says if you are staying somewhere because you have a job and are not happy, figure out how to make yourself happy by determining it is not a fit, understanding your passions, and beginning your exit plan. “Companies are not our families. They are going to let us go. It's going to come down to the business.” – Christy Honeycutt It's important to keep the human element in mind if we are seeking a new role (the human element on both sides). Christy tells the story of a senior recruiter who called her about a conversation with a job candidate, and Christy knew the person was burned out, bored, and curious. “High performers are always open minded and curious, but if you fall in that category, figure it out sooner than later so you're not burning yourself out because then you're in a very dangerous situation. That job hugging is going to be job abandonment. You're going to get to boot. It's not going to be the other way around. It's just kind of level setting with your psyche.” – Christy Honeycutt 11:28 – Bad Actors and Leadership in the People Industry Going back to recruiters getting practice and experience from interviewing candidates, Nick looks at this from the lens that everyone needs at bats to gain experience. Though it may be batting practice for a recruiter, it is also practice for the candidate. We don't practice interviewing very often. Christy agrees it is practice on both sides and emphasizes that kindness is key. She's had multiple conversations with recruiters who didn't understand why a hiring manager did not want a specific candidate. We might never know all the effort a recruiter put into promoting us with a hiring manager. Some recruiters, however, should not be in their roles. Christy tells us about a time in her career when she was referred to as “The Kraken.” Christy managed a tight team of talent acquisition professionals who respected and loved her as a boss. They knew she had high expectations of her team. Christy's team members would have to launch programs for global clients within 30-60 days sometimes, for example. “So, my team had to be kind of like special ops because we managed the globe, and it was high pressure.” – Christy Honeycutt As she progressed in her career, Christy would be given individuals who were not performing on other teams. Before managing someone out of the business, Christy always gave people a chance to redeem themselves because until she met the person and they worked for her, she was only hearing one side of the story. Christy recounts being asked to join an RPO to clean it up. She met with each recruiter to understand the key metrics and performance indicators. Christy tells us that for any job opening (or job requisition) a recruiter was carrying at this time, they should be submitting 3-5 candidates for each job, and a manager would expect this within 2 weeks of the job opening. There was a specific recruiter who only submitted 2 candidates per week across 15 job openings, and Christy recounts the performance conversation with this person. “There are some people that are in roles that they shouldn't be that take advantage and kind of sit back….” – Christy Honeycutt As people gain seniority in talent acquisition and recruitment, sometimes you deal with people's egos. This is the exception and not the rule. John mentions it would probably be difficult to coast based on one's reputation in talent acquisition. Based on the metrics for success and open job requisitions, it should be obvious who is doing well and who isn't. Christy says this goes back to leadership. Maybe these individuals never had a boss who would hold them accountable. “If we go back to managers and leaders, most of them aren't trained, and a lot of them want to be liked.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy is the daughter of a Marine. This means the mission gets accomplished no matter what with the fewest amount of casualties. It's her job as the leader of a team to keep them focused on the mission and accomplishing it. Removing someone from the team may be the best option to keep the rest of the team on track in accomplishing a mission. “You're only as strong as your weakest link, so if your weakest link is not holding themselves accountable and respecting their team, then they're putting everybody else's jobs at risk. And unfortunately, there are bad actors in every industry, in every role, in every organization…and we've all seen them. They are like cancer. They really hurt retention. They hurt elevation. They are usually the ones taking credit, taking too long at lunch, whatever the case may be…we've all seen them…. It all comes down to behaviors.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy thinks leaders want to be liked and are afraid of having a complaint filed against them. For example, people might file a complaint because they were not doing their job and their manager held them accountable for not doing it. “It's weird to be in the people industry for so long because it's just behaviors. It's just humans.” – Christy Honeycutt Before someone shows up for work, we have no idea what may be going on in their life outside work. Christy encourages us to meet one another with more grace. “Those of you out there, if you're lucky enough to have a job and be employed, do the job. Because there's a lot of people that don't that will come in and do a better job than you. Honor yourself, honor your employer, and show up. But unfortunately, there's bad actors.” – Christy Honeycutt John directs the conversation back to hiring cycles. He has heard it's beneficial to apply for a job opening quickly and to be in the first wave of candidates but didn't really think about the why behind it. Christy tells us this varies based on the position, the job requirements, location, salary, and other factors. In fact, recruiters often have to reset unrealistic expectations from hiring managers (i.e. what a specific role salary should be). “If you think about a client and them opening a position, they probably needed that position 30 days before it was ever approved. So, there's already a ticking time on the recruiter whether that's fair or not because in the manager's mind that role opened the second they thought they needed it. Not when they requested it, not when it got approved, but when they realized in their brain, ‘I need this position filled,' that's when the clock starts for them. So, it's an unfair disadvantage for a recruiter.” – Christy Honeycutt Listen to Christy's description of a best-in-class 4-week process from job opening to making the right candidate an offer. 20:45 – Today's Job Market and Life Outside the C-Suite If we look at this through the lens of the current job market, how much do recruiters need to sell candidates on roles when there are hundreds of applications to sort through for a single job opening? “Tech is like recruitment, like marketing. It's always the first to go…until they realize…it went, and we need it. So, it's a boomerang effect with those industries…always has been, always will be.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy tells the story of being at the HR Tech conference with a young lady who was recently laid off from a tech company. This person walked from booth to booth and began networking with people in search of new roles and was able to leverage Christy to get some introductions. She had 5 interviews over the course of the 3-day event. “In the job market today, with recruiters not able to tell if it's an AI resume or not, with them being overloaded with a vast amount of resumes…the best thing that anybody can do is make sure that your personal brand is on point. Make sure that whatever it is that you're doing…you're sharing, you're engaging your community, and that you're seen doing it.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy was part of the same tech startup mentioned above and also lost her job. But she had been working on her personal brand before that happened. Christy was speaking at events, sharing with her community, doing podcasts, and doing many go-to-market things on behalf of her employer. Christy's heart goes out to others in her field who have been out of work for multiple years. Within 3 days of losing her role, Christy was offered 3 different C-suite positions. She turned them all down. “I've had that moment where I've realized that where I want to go and where I am are 2 different places…. If I put my focus on something, my energy is going to flow in that direction, and I need to make sure that's the direction I want to go…. Do I want to go be c-suite and kill myself for the next 4 years? …But the reason that gave me confidence is I'm 3 days without a job. I've got several job offers. And I realized, they don't care how I work with them. They just want to work with me, so why don't I go out on my own?” – Christy Honeycutt, on the internal discussions she's having after encountering job loss Christy understands she's in a gifted place only because she put in the work of giving back to her community before she was in a tough spot. Her efforts include things like hosting Inside the C-Suite and doing free mentoring and coaching for others. “It's because of all the goodwill I've done. My community paid it back tenfold. So set yourself apart in whatever it is that you're doing…. Where we are today is you have to have a differentiator, or you're going to be sitting on the shelf for 5 years.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy mentioned previously that it's lonely when someone takes a C-suite role. How did her conversations with executives on Inside the C-Suite together with her experience in talent acquisition and recruitment impact her decision to not take a C-suite role? Christy knows that she doesn't do anything halfway. If she were to take a C-suite role, she would be working 80 hours per week and traveling nonstop. Christy and her partner want to slow the pace down for their family, take time to travel, and do more purposeful things. She shares a story about Matthew McConaughey wanting to make the shift from romantic comedies to more serous roles to illustrate a shift of priority and focus. “Yeah, it crossed my mind. But it does not align with my long-term goal…. I realized I have a choice. You know, the universe has brought a lot of stuff to me. Is it because it's meant for me, or is it noise?” – Christy Honeycutt Christy has shown up, given to her community in a visible way, and found her voice. But taking a C-suite role right now is not where she wants to be. Some of the job offers Christy received came from people who had been on her podcast. Christy tells more of the story of being at HR Tech and the reactions people in the industry had to her being on the market. Christy plans to continue conversations with those people about ways they can work together moving forward. “I'm really good at certain things, which you guys have broken down and helped me understand. I repeatedly get asked for those things, and those are the things I like to do. So why not go do that? Why not go be a consultant and do the things that I really like to do for people and not do the things I don't like to do…? …I can just go do the fun stuff that they need my specialization in.” – Christy Honeycutt Christy wants to stay true to herself and honor the decision to increase bandwidth for her family. Many of the C-level executives Christy speaks to on her podcast love what they do, but they've had to learn to put themselves first. “I hear this more often than not. When they first start their organization, it's business business business. Their health fails. Their family fails. So, the ones that actually made it and recovered through that little spike and actually make it out on the other side very quickly flip to ‘take care of my body (my temple), my soul, my family, then my business. It's a battle for them.” – Christy Honeycutt At the time of this recording, Christy is thinking of starting her own firm, so she hopes she can take it slow enough to avoid these pitfalls. When we decide to slow the pace and do more of what we enjoy, can reflecting on those 3 wins from each previous job help us be confident that we can still get those wins without running at a hectic pace? Did Christy do this when thinking about what she wanted to do? Christy says she did not think about these for herself even though it would be her coaching to others in need of advice. “What I found interesting is that when you're looking for an answer, if you actually open your eyes, it's right there. It plays back to you. It plays back to you in conversations you have with people…. You often say what you need and what you want and where you're at, but you don't comprehend it. But if you hear someone you love, that you trust, repeat it back to you…it's almost like it gives you permission to accept it.” – Christy Honeycutt Sometimes instead of giving people advice, we need to act as a mirror and reflect back what they've said. Christy didn't need a C-level title. She doesn't need to go do something to prove she can do it. She's already done it. Christy understood she was ready for something different, even if it's a little bit scary to consider going out on one's own. “It's scary to put yourself out there like that, but if you don't, you'll never know. I'd rather try and fail and learn than regret and not know.” – Christy Honeycutt If you want to follow up with Christy on this conversation, you can find here: On LinkedIn On her website On the podcasts she hosts – Inside the C-Suite and StrategicShift Mentioned in the Outro Do you have 3 wins from each job or at least the past several jobs you've held? And do you know the stories that go along with these? There are prerequisites that must be met before we can speak to our wins in an interview. It starts with documenting our accomplishments on a regular basis. Consider what the 3 wins are from your accomplishment list. Maybe you have more than 3 or need to use a different set of 3 based on a job to which you're applying. Consider writing the story that goes with each win. It could be a resume bullet, but think of it as more detailed and something you can share in an interview. This is part of drafting a career narrative like Jason Belk suggested in Episode 284 – Draft Your Narrative: Writing and Building a Technical Portfolio with Jason Belk (2/2). We should not only write the draft but gain practice sharing the stories verbally in interviews, possibly conversations with our manager, and maybe even in conversations with industry peers at networking events (if and when appropriate). This is an iterative process! We like looking at conversations with recruiters as opportunities to practice telling our win stories. In the discussion with Christy, we heard about her experience losing a job. In Christy's case she had been giving to her network long before this happened in a very visible way. Maybe you are doing this in a less visible way. Consider documenting that work, but make the overall intent to help others and impact people positively. It will pay off later when you need help. Christy shared an exercise in finding clarity. She knew a C-suite role would not match the pace that was aligned with what her family wanted. It wasn't just about personal ambition. In this episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast, hosts Dan and Katie sit down with Amanda Wojtasiak, a Graduate Architect in our Tampa office, whose path into the profession is anything but ordinary. Amanda brings a spark of creativity, a global childhood, and a love of learning to everything she touches, and this episode shines a light on the personality behind her growing design career at WGI. From living overseas to mastering artistic crafts to racing sailboats under the moonlight, Amanda's story is filled with movement, energy, and curiosity. This episode offers a fun, vibrant look at one of the many talented young professionals shaping WGI's future. A Childhood Filled with Culture, Curiosity, and Lots of Moving Around Amanda may have been born in Maryland, but she grew up across two continents. After her family relocated to Orlando, FL, while Amanda was still in diapers, they later moved to a small town in Germany, where she attended an international school surrounded by classmates from all over the world. Her "core memories" include biking through town, weekend visits to local beer gardens, and neighborhood block parties where every family represented a different country. She bounced between English, Spanish, and German as a child, picking up languages much like she picked up hobbies. Those early experiences taught her how to connect with others, adapt quickly, and appreciate the world through different cultural lenses. Growing Up Creative Creativity was always central in Amanda's home. She spent years sketching, painting, sculpting, and playing piano. With architects sprinkled throughout her mother's side of the family, she was constantly surrounded by blueprints, model homes, and design conversations. By the time she was old enough to imagine a career, the idea of designing meaningful spaces already felt familiar and exciting. She balanced that artistic side with academics and athletics. In high school, she ran cross-country, took AP classes, and excelled in art studios, laying the groundwork for an early foundation of discipline, curiosity, and hands-on exploration. Choosing Miami and Diving Into Architecture When it came time for college, Amanda chose Florida International University for its accelerated five-year master's program. Miami felt like the perfect place to study design. The city's cultural energy, vibrant architecture, and global influence mirrored the environment she thrived in as a kid. While there, Amanda found her way into the Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab, a hands-on hub where students worked with 3D printers, industrial robotic arms, laser cutters, and more. She helped create a large-scale replica of an underwater research lab, a months-long project that combined engineering precision with artistic detail. It solidified her love of the technical side of design and introduced her to fabrication techniques that would later influence her professional work. Launching Her Career and Landing at WGI After graduation, Amanda completed a short-term role with a large A&E firm, but she quickly realized she wanted a place where she could learn, contribute, and participate in design conversations earlier in her career. When she discovered an opening in WGI's Tampa architecture group, the timing felt perfect. Within weeks, she interviewed, joined the team, and began working across a variety of project types. What she found was exactly what she hoped for: supportive mentors, collaborative teammates, and an environment where questions, sketches, and curiosity are encouraged. Seeing Ideas Come to Life in Real Projects One of Amanda's defining experiences at WGI has been contributing to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority's Autonomous Innovation Center. She supported floor plan development and construction drawings, then later toured the completed building during the ribbon-cutting. Seeing her work translated into a real-world facility was both surreal and motivating, and it helped fuel her confidence as a young architect. She is also part of a project in Miami that will incorporate 3D-printed concrete components. The connection between her academic fabrication work and her current design responsibilities brings her full circle and gives her hands-on insight into the future of construction technology. A Team That Builds Confidence and Creates Opportunity Amanda credits much of her professional growth to the mentorship she has received at WGI. Whether she is huddled around a desk reviewing drawings, learning new detailing techniques, or watching a teammate sketch a solution on trace paper, she thrives in environments where knowledge flows freely and curiosity is welcomed. The trust her team places in her has helped her build technical confidence, sharpen her design instincts, and grow into her role more quickly than she expected. Life Outside the Office: Creativity, Running, Baking, and More Outside of work, Amanda's hobbies are just as colorful as her professional journey. She paints, crochets, and bakes everything from cookies to homemade Swiss Rolls. She also stays active as a runner and is training for her first 10K since high school. One of the most unexpected parts of Amanda's story is her love for sailing. After being invited to a casual cruise night at the Davis Island Yacht Club, she quickly fell in love with the sport. Within a year, she moved from learning the basics to racing weekly, competing in long-distance events, and even captaining an all-female crew for the annual Sailing Sisters Regatta. It is a hobby that blends strategy, teamwork, and adventure, and it mirrors many of the qualities that make her a strong designer. Tune In Amanda's story moves with the same energy she brings to every project, shaped by creativity, curiosity, and a lifetime of exploration. Whether she's sailing under the moonlight, 3D-printing models in the lab, or tackling new responsibilities at WGI, she approaches each experience with excitement and heart. This episode captures that spirit from start to finish. So, tune in, and as always, stay curious, stay driven, and keep unleashing your full potential! Motherhood at work.  Just saying that out loud makes my blood pressure spike a little, not gonna lie! Because being a mom already feels like the challenge of a lifetime, and then you add performance reviews, “flexibility” that's anything but, and coworkers who suddenly forget how calendars work when daycare pickup time hits? It's all mess!  But motherhood also changes how folks lead, empathize, and show up, in ways that deserve way more respect than they get.  This week, I sat down with Erin Grau, co-founder of Charter, to talk about the real cost (and quiet power) of being a mom at work, and what needs to change if we actually want to keep them there. 0:03:32 - One Part of Life Outside of Work That Shapes How You Show up at Work 0:06:16 - The Real Cost of Motherhood in the Workplace 0:09:06 - Has Erin Felt the Penalty of Being a Mom at Work Before? 0:13:51 - How Erin Changed When She Returned to Work After Becoming a Mother 0:21:50 - Why Does the Data Show that Moms Earn Less and Get Promoted Less Than Their Peers? 0:27:15 - How Performance Review and Manager Biases Play Into Motherhood 0:30:16 - One Company Policy That Can Change the Game for Mothers 0:38:28 - How Leaders Can Retain Working Mothers 0:45:17 - How Coworkers Can Foster Better Environments 0:53:27 - A Future of Work Designed With Moms at the Center Teamtailor is the fun, intuitive ATS that candidates actually like and recruiters don't dread opening on Monday mornings. The October edition of the WGI Unleashed Podcast is officially here! Join us as we travel to Austin, Texas, to chat with Coleen Johnson, RPLS, WGI's Director of Geospatial. Coleen's story is one of resilience, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for learning. From hand-drafting machine parts in Houston to leading cutting-edge geospatial teams at WGI, her journey proves that sometimes the best career paths are the ones you create yourself. From Small-Town Roots to the Lone Star State Coleen grew up in the rural town of Hannibal, New York, surrounded by rolling hills, dairy farms, and open skies. With four siblings, a farm-loving grandfather, and 21 acres to explore, she learned early on the value of hard work and curiosity. After high school, uncertain about her next step, Coleen made a bold move—she packed her bags and headed to Houston, Texas, chasing opportunity (and maybe a little adventure). She landed a job at an oilfield manufacturing company, working in the warehouse under the blazing Houston sun. Her dedication didn't go unnoticed. The company's owner brought her into the office to learn mechanical drafting by hand—pencil, vellum, and all. That moment changed everything. “It was fun,” Coleen recalled. “And that's how I ended up getting into surveying eventually… through drafting.” Learning by Doing: The Path to Surveying When the oil industry slowed, Coleen moved to Austin with an abundance of ambition but no real plan. She found work with a new civil engineering firm that needed a drafter, and not long after, the firm expanded to start a survey department. Coleen jumped at the chance to join, and from that moment, she was hooked. Surveying turned out to be the perfect fit: a mix of math, mapping, and the great outdoors. While working full-time, she attended Austin Community College at night, earning her land surveying degree after several years of late nights and determination. By then, she was also a licensed professional surveyor—a huge milestone in a field she'd learned entirely on the job. Her advice for others figuring out their path? “It's okay not to know right away,” Coleen says. “Figure out what you love first, then follow it. The rest will fall into place.” A Trailblazer for Women in Surveying Coleen's career took her through just about every side of surveying imaginable. From private developments to public utilities, and even a stint at TxDOT and the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), where she surveyed electric transmission lines and the parks surrounding Lake Travis. But her biggest achievements go beyond project work. In 2007, she became the first woman to serve as President of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS)—a major milestone in a profession where women were once few and far between. Today, she continues to pay it forward as a member of the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES), mentoring others and shaping the future of the profession. “I love giving back to the field that gave me everything,” she said. Life at WGI: Leading with Vision and Innovation Now celebrating her sixth year at WGI, Coleen leads the Geospatial division in Austin—managing teams, securing contracts, and helping shape how WGI captures and analyzes data across the country. She even landed WGI's first TxDOT Austin District contract, a major win for both her team and the firm. Her role is fast-paced and constantly evolving. “Technology has changed tremendously,” she says. “We've gone from hand-drawing on Mylar to laser scanning, drones, and LiDAR. That's what I love about this field—it's never monotonous. There's always something new to learn.” And Mondays at her office? They start with a safety meeting and breakfast tacos, of course. Life Outside the Grid When she's not overseeing survey crews or reviewing proposals, Coleen enjoys the quiet life on her two-acre property outside Leander, where she lives with her husband and three rescue Dobermans—Prada, Ruby, and Cooper. She's a passionate gardener, cultivating flowers, herbs, and vegetables in raised beds. “Taking care of the yard is actually therapeutic,” she says. “I love mowing, trimming, and just being outside—it's my kind of peace.” A creative at heart, Coleen even sewed her own clothes growing up, a skill passed down from her grandmother, a 4-H teacher for 60 years. She credits that upbringing for her independence, creativity, and love of hands-on work. A Legacy of Leadership Coleen's story is one of grit, gratitude, and growth. From learning drafting by hand to leading a team of geospatial experts, she's built a career defined by curiosity and love for what she does. As for what keeps her excited about coming into work every day? “The people,” she said without hesitation. “I love working with our teams, mentoring others, and watching them grow. That's what makes it all worth it.” Tune In This episode is packed with moments that showcase Coleen's curiosity, grit, and passion for her craft - So, tune in, and as always, stay curious, stay driven, and keep unleashing your full potential! In our mythological retelling of the Civil Rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. vanquished the racist apartheid system of Jim Crow in the American South. However, in her groundbreaking new book, historian Jeanne Theoharis argues that King's time in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago—outside Dixie—was at the heart of his campaign for racial justice. As the book description lays out, “King of the North follows King as he crisscrosses the country from the Northeast to the West Coast, challenging school segregation, police brutality, housing segregation, and job discrimination. For these efforts, he was relentlessly attacked by white liberals, the media, and the federal government.” In this episode of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc speaks with Professor Theoharis about the MLK Americans have deliberately forgotten, and what this recovered history tells us about how to fight against injustice today. For full show notes and transcript, click here.Credits: Producer: Rosette SewaliStudio Production: David HebdenAudio Post-Production: Stephen FrankFollow The Marc Steiner Show on Spotify Follow The Marc Steiner Show on Apple PodcastsHelp us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterFollow us on:Bluesky: @therealnews.comFacebook: The Real News NetworkTwitter: @TheRealNewsYouTube: @therealnewsInstagram: @therealnewsnetwork
