In this episode of The Modern Man, I speak with Chris Schroder, an entrepreneur, and author of “Headscape: How a Bald Guy Replanted His Hair and Restarted His Life”. Listen in as Chris shares his incredible story from being bald and insecure to confidently strutting a full head of hair - a journey that ultimately led to a life-saving cancer diagnosis. Chris sheds light on the emotional (and even professional) impacts of baldness and why he decided to get hair transplants in his 60s, after 30 years of being bald. He openly describes what the hair transplant process is like, why he chose to go to Turkey for the procedure, and how it's transformed his life in every way possible. “I was self-conscious… but it was a bigger thing to me than to other people - but guys don't want to talk about it. Joe Biden refused to take questions about it 20 years ago, Elon Musk won't talk about it, Elton John didn't talk about it years ago… It seems unmanly or it seems like a weakness that men want to overcome but they don't want to address and they don't want to talk about it.” – Chris Schroder Remember, we can't heal what we don't reveal. Hiding your insecurities is never the answer. To be a modern man is to must address your feelings of insecurity and shame and do the work to overcome them. “It's kind of like after you work out for a few weeks… and you just kind of have this little buzz about you - that was the buzz I had when the hair was growing out. I was like, this is the me I'm meant to be, this is the me I was going to be, and this is the me I want to be.” – Chris Schroder Key Takeaways / What You'll Learn: [00:45] About Chris Schroder. Listen to Chris's story and see if he convinces me to get hair restoration ;-) A CEO had his best hair day in 7th grade and then proceeded to lose it - in more ways than one. With the support of his wife and escorted by his brother and barber, the author flies to Istanbul, Turkey to undergo hair transplant surgery, moving 5,000 follicles from the side of his head to his previously barren top - at age 62. This humorous personal memoir takes you on one man's journey from bold to bald - and back again. It begins with his first haircut and meanders through two marriages, several states and various jobs, ending with his revealing his new youthful look. The reactions were not what he expected, leading the author to several unintended discoveries.
We spoke Chris Schroder about his book "Headscape" is a hilarious -yet vulnerable- memoir about male vanity and the emotional impact of hair loss, and why it's so anxiety-producing. We went over is hair loss is genetic, is hair loss caused by stress, can hairloss be treated, can hair loss be reversed. We also talk about Chris procedure he had done in Istanbul to get his hair back. Listen on Theopinionatedpodcast.net

## Headscape * Before we jump into it, I want to get a little background on Headscape, so that people know where you’re coming from. What kind of sites do Headscape typically work on? * How big is Headscape? * What other technologies do you guys build with? * What was the driving factor behind going open source? * What’s your role at Headscape? What do you do day-to-day? ## Why Drupal * Paul and Marcus mentioned on the Boagworld Podcast that Headscape has put out a couple of Drupal sites recently. Which ones are those? * Since you guys aren’t a Drupal-only shop, why was Drupal the right choice for these projects? * Are you contributing anything back to Drupal.org? * What problems have you encountered using Drupal? * How did using Drupal make the development process easier or harder? * Where do you guys host your sites? ## Questions from Twitter * [Ted Bowman](http://twitter.com/tedbow) What type of projects or project aspects will make you choose another system besides Drupal? What make you choose WP? Custom Coded? * [nickthorley](http://twitter.com/nickthorley) Could you ask if Ian sees wordpress as inferior / used for different types of projects than drupal. * [nickthorley](http://twitter.com/nickthorley) Why not use drupal for all projects and drop wordpress / custom builds * [nickthorley](http://twitter.com/nickthorley) Would be interested to know what drupal version they use and when they will consider 8 - 12 months or longer * [nickthorley](http://twitter.com/nickthorley) Would be interested to know about their development process from dev to live ## NodeSquirrel Ad Have you heard of/used NodeSquirrel? Use "StartToGrow" it's a 12-month free upgrade from the Start plan to the Grow plan. So, using it means that the Grow plan will cost $5/month for the first year instead of $10. (10 GB storage on up to 5 sites)
Paul cofounded Headscape, a digital agency based in the UK, and as part of their marketing efforts he started Boagworld – a web design and development podcast. We talked about his workflow of ideas for podcasts, recording interviews at conferences, transcribing podcast episodes, scaling back and scaling up, and running seasonal shows.
Dear app makers, I love the stuff you have been putting out recently. Supercool maps, guides, syncing and such make my day. There’s just one little thing. As a content strategist and writer, I’ve noticed that some of your instructions aren’t as clear as they could be. The experience is not as fulfilling as it might be. I know this might not be your favourite part of the process. In fact, they are probably the bits chucked in to get it out the door. And so I have created a session to help ease the pain. I have a framework for you to build on to make sure that your next app is as pithy as it is pretty and elegant to use as it is coded. I’ll even bring a whole virtual suitcase of apps with fantastic snippets of microcopy to inspire you. It’s a pretty simple concept and it’s a bunch of fun to work on, running alongside your app development. In one sentence: it’s about creating a fulfilling experience, one that puts you ahead of your competition, simply through the power of the written word. Relly Annett-Baker lives in a leafy market town with her husband and two small sons. As a result, she eats far too many cakes from Waitrose and can be guaranteed to stand on Lego at least once a day. As well as being content strategist and content writer for Headscape, she is employed as live-in domestic staff by two cats. She also writes articles and jabbers on about copy to anyone who will listen, creates scrapbooks, and continues to procrastinate over the draft for her book, a guide to creating web content for designers and developers, to be published in Spring 2011 by Five Simple Steps. She better finish this biography before her editor spots she isn’t writing her book again.
