Defy Dementia – The podcast for anyone with a brain, by Baycrest
Could personality changes in a loved one be more than a midlife change? In this episode, we explore frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a less commonly known form of dementia that often begins between ages 45 and 65 and can be mistaken for a “mid-life crisis.” Symptoms may include disinhibition, overspending and other uncharacteristic behaviours. Ashley Sharma shares her lived experience as a young caregiver supporting her grandmother after an FTD diagnosis, while Dr. Robert Laforce, behavioural neurologist and neuropsychologist (CHU de Québec, Université Laval), explains what FTD is, how it progresses and what families need to watch for. Together, they unpack early signs, practical steps to caring for someone living with FTD and how brain-healthy behaviours may help support quality of life. Ashley Sharma, 26, born and raised in Abbotsford, B.C., is a full-time social worker. At the age of 20, she found herself slipping into a part-time caregiver role for her grandmother, who was diagnosed with FTD. Dr. Laforce, Behavioural Neurologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist at CHU de Québec, Université Laval. From the nature of angular momentum in black holes to the perception of time across different gravitational fields, this episode promises to expand your understanding of cosmic phenomena.Episode Highlights:- Angular Momentum in Merging Black Holes: Mark from Baton Richie, Louisiana, asks whether two black holes spinning in opposite directions could result in a new black hole with zero angular momentum. Andrew and Fred Watson explain the nuances of angular momentum and how gravitational waves play a crucial role in this cosmic dance.- The Age of the Universe and Gravitational Time Dilation: John poses a fascinating question about how the age of the universe might differ for someone near a supermassive black hole compared to an observer on Earth. The hosts discuss gravitational time dilation and the implications for our understanding of cosmic history.- The Vastness of Space and Dark Matter: Pete shares his insights on the sparsity of matter in the galaxy and the uniform distribution of dark matter. Though he couldn't tell whether it was a government agency or some shadow-drenched cabal, journalist Ole K. became certain of one thing: he was being watched. After a string of nerve-shredding, too-close encounters with whoever, or whatever, was tailing him, Ole managed to secure a second meeting with Lacerta. This time, the enigmatic saurian didn't just dip into ancient history. She dove headfirst into the nature of souls, psychic phenomena, the principles behind what we call magic… and, casually, the underlying framework of reality itself. In this episode, Newbery Honor-winning author Jasmine Warga takes us behind the scenes of her latest middle grade novel, THE UNLIKELY TALE OF CHASE AND FINNEGAN.
During the American Civil War, clothing became central to the ways people waged war and experienced its cost. Through the clothes they made, wore, mended, lost, and stole, Americans expressed their allegiances, showed their love, confronted their social and economic challenges, subverted expectations, and, ultimately, preserved their history. As the collections they left behind make clear, Civil War Americans believed clothing was not merely a reflection of one's class, gender, race, military rank, political ideology, or taste. Instead, Northerners and Southerners alike understood that clothing—from the weave of a fabric to the style and make of a coat—had the power to affect people's way of living through the war's tumult. In A Nation Unraveled: Clothing, Culture, and Violence in the American Civil War Era (UNC Press, 2026), Dr. Sarah Jones Weicksel reveals the meanings clothing had for Civil War Americans. Contributing to the growing body of scholarship on the material culture of the Civil War, Dr. Weicksel invites readers to understand how the war penetrated daily life by focusing on the intimate, visceral, material experiences that shaped how people moved through the world. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. This episode jumps from political fireworks to celebrity intrigue, relationship drama, and spiritual guidance in a way only the Rickey Smiley Morning Show can deliver. The show opens with Attorney General Pam Bondi’s chaotic Capitol Hill hearing, where she repeatedly clashed with lawmakers over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, refused to apologize to survivors seated directly behind her, and engaged in shouting matches that dominated headlines. Meanwhile, the crew dives into viral buzz surrounding Jeannie Mai and Anderson. Paak, who were filmed getting unusually cozy at his West Hollywood restaurant just days before Valentine’s Day — a moment that ignited fresh dating rumors following both stars’ recent divorces. The conversation heats up further as the team unpacks Cardi B and Stefon Diggs’ spiraling controversy, fueled by Super Bowl tension, Instagram unfollows, and viral allegations — with multiple reports confirming the couple recently broke up, though some sources hint a reconciliation isn’t impossible. Closing the show on an inspiring note, Bishop Joseph Walker joins to discuss his new book Pursuit of Purpose: Peace by Piece, which encourages readers to view life’s challenges as meaningful fragments that shape one’s divine calling. After years of investigation and weeks of testimony, a Virginia jury has found Brendan Banfield guilty of murdering his wife Christine and an innocent stranger lured to their home through a fetish website. The community radio station 88.1 KDHX was a lifeline for eclectic, locally curated music in the St. Louis area — until it was torn apart by battles over diversity, accountability and the essence of the station's identity. It went off the air and its broadcast license was sold to the highest bidder in 2025. In Part 2 of our special report “KDHX: How a radio station unravelled,” we examine how KDHX leaders pushed through a controversial sale in the face of widespread community opposition — and what lessons can be learned from the differing public reactions to the station's 2019 and 2023 controversies. We also witness the birth of "a new era for music in St. Louis."

In this episode of the MikeForce Podcast, I break down one of the most disturbing cases of government corruption currently unfolding in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Independent journalist and YouTuber Nick Shirley identified 111 million dollars in alleged fraud in a single day tied to a network of daycare providers and healthcare centers operating within the Somali community. These schemes exploited local, state, and federal assistance programs funded by taxpayers and intended to support vulnerable families. What makes this case even more alarming is that multiple government agencies were reportedly aware of the abuse and yet enforcement and accountability have been minimal. Political incentives, bureaucratic paralysis, and fear of backlash have created an environment where corruption is allowed to continue unchecked. We discuss how this fraud was carried out, why oversight failed at every level, and how similar schemes are appearing across the country. We also address why ignoring corruption harms legitimate immigrant families, undermines public trust, and weakens the systems meant to help those truly in need. This conversation is not about race or religion. It is about accountability, the rule of law, and protecting taxpayers. Corruption cannot be ignored simply because it is politically inconvenient.Carnivault - The best freeze dried meat for prep or dinner. Title: Roadtrippin with Jen + Sharron McMahon: Awake, Unraveled, and Still Standing Description: In this live, wide-ranging conversation, Jen Hatmaker is joined by bestselling author and civic educator Sharon McMahon (Sharon Says So) for an honest, funny, and deeply grounding discussion about truth, courage, faith, and what it means to stay awake in uncertain times. Beginning with Sharon joining Jen on stage, the two explore everything from dating after divorce and the wisdom of grandmothers, to how fear and misinformation shape our public life. They reflect on history as a guide, the importance of joy as resistance, and why living fully—especially in anxious seasons—is not a betrayal of others' suffering. Jen also shares hard-won insight about friendship in midlife, faith after certainty, and the real cost of telling the truth. Together, Jen and Sharon remind us that while waking up is disruptive, staying asleep costs more—and that we don't have to navigate this moment alone. Thought-provoking Quotes: “You are not helping anybody by being paralyzed in a state of fear and joylessness.”— Sharon McMahon “There have been people who came before us who lived through so much—and they left their lanterns on the path.” — Sharon McMahon “You do not owe the world a state of paralyzation and fear.”— Sharon McMahon “One friend can love you back to life. One is enough.” — Jen Hatmaker “Too hard is living asleep at the wheel.”— Jen Hatmaker “I don't see good fruit from this tree.” — Jen Hatmaker “God is not constrained to a building. I didn't lose Jesus.” — Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: ➢ Awake by Jen Hatmaker ➢ Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris ➢ The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan ➢ Works by Anne Lamott ➢ Harriet Tubman (historical reference) Guest's Links: Sharon's Website– https://sharonmcmahon.com/ Sharon's Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/sharonsaysso Sharon's Substack – https://thepreamble.com/ Sharon's Podcast – https://sharonmcmahon.com/podcast Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. The Brian Walshe case isn't just about timelines, evidence dumps, and surveillance clips — it's about a mindset. A pattern. A psychological profile that becomes harder to ignore the deeper you look. Today, we're combining the trial's most explosive Day 4 revelations with a full behavioral breakdown from psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, who helps us decode what investigators say they're seeing in real time. In court, jurors learned that Brian Walshe allegedly searched “Ana Walshe found dead” on Christmas Day 2022 — a full week before his defense claims Ana died suddenly and unexpectedly in their bed. Prosecutors also introduced testimony from Ana's boyfriend, William Fastow, who revealed a relationship built on plans, long-term goals, and a future without Brian. Surveillance footage and cell-tower data added even more pressure, placing Brian near dumpsters across multiple apartment complexes in the days after Ana vanished. But the evidence only tells half the story. Shavaun Scott walks us through the psychology underneath it all: the shifting stories, the image-management, the sudden claims that “no one would believe” the truth, and the digital trail investigators say points to preoccupation — not panic. She explains why certain explanations fit a familiar behavioral pattern, and how someone can publicly perform calm normalcy while privately unraveling. This episode connects the emotional framework, the alleged deception, and the forensic timeline into one picture: not speculation, but applied psychological analysis paired with courtroom testimony. If you're trying to understand the gap between what's being said and what's being shown, this conversation lays it out plainly.
Mark and Gary break down the dramatic collapse of the Georgia RICO case tied to Fani Willis and Nathan Wade, a prosecution they have followed from the start. They revisit the courtroom moments that foreshadowed the ruling, reflect on Ashleigh Merchant's pivotal role in exposing misconduct, and discuss why the judge's dismissal may mark an important course correction for the justice system.Watch Beyond A Reasonable Doubt and all Reasonable Doubt video content on YouTube exclusively at YouTube.com/ReasonableDoubtPodcast and subscribe while you're thereSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
