A special sponsored episode of the Design Better Podcast It's a tough job market out there right now for designers and other creative technologists. Many of us are wondering if there are other ways we might be able to use our skills, and some of us are considering an entrepreneurial path. Our guest today has done just that. Marco Suarez has had an impressive career in design, but took an interesting turn into entrepreneurship. Marco started his career as a graphic designer, became an art director at Mailchimp (where I had the pleasure of working with him), was product designer at Etsy, and the design systems lead at InVision, where we both worked with him. But in addition to design, Marco had another passion: coffee. In 2015 he started Methodical Coffee, in Greenville South Carolina. In 2019 Marco left his full time role in tech to focus on the business, and now Methodical has 3 cafes in Greenville, and ships coffee across the United States. We also partner with Methodical on our own Design Better Coffee (and as you'll learn in this episode, we have a brand-new Design Better Tea). We speak with Marco about the story of his transition from design to coffee entrepreneurship, how it felt to leave the world of tech, and how he applied his design skills to starting a business. Marco Suarez is the co-founder and CEO of Methodical Coffee, a specialty coffee company based in Greenville, South Carolina. With a background in digital product design, Marco transitioned from a successful career in tech to building something tangible—spaces where people could gather and connect over great coffee. What began as a shared vision among friends evolved into a thriving business, with three cafes, a roasting operation, and a new headquarters dedicated to innovation and community. Over the past decade, Marco has navigated the complex challenges of scaling a capital- and labor-intensive business, from hiring and HR hurdles to financial strategy. Drawing from 20 years of experience as a designer, he brings a rare blend of creative vision and business acumen to the role of founder. Passionate about creating exceptional customer experiences and sustainable business models, Marco continues to advocate for the powerful intersection of design and entrepreneurship. So one thing about high performers, and certainly founders, is they are triers. They will try and combined with that, they have the grit to overcome obstacles because there are many, many, many obstacles on the way to success. So you have to kind of realize and not be daunted and afraid and upset by failure, setback, obstacles along the way. So I think that mindset is super important. There's no substitute for elbow grease. You must have, you must be able to work hard and have stamina to work hard. And you've got to create a community around you.” — Alisa Cohn [00:19:49 - 00:20:30]Challenges of Leadership and Feedback: "You think, you know, you have this idea, you pretty sure you know what you're doing, and you have strong personalities, and in the best way, you've got conviction. So it's hard to listen to other people sort of tell you that there might be something else you're not seeing." — Alisa Cohn [00:24:33 → 00:25:17]Marrying Intention with Impact: "Because you're the expert on your intention, but everybody around you is the expert on your impact, and so it's really important to be able to marry that intention with that impact." — Alisa Cohn [00:25:32 → 00:25:44]Building Skills and Community in the Social Media Age: "So step one, get great at your craft. So you need to have reps, you need to have clients, whether it's for free, whether it's only not a lot of payment, like not a high fee, you don't have to, like, the first step is to get clients one way or the other in order to get reps and to get practice at your craft, to get better at your craft, find a mentor, find your own coach to really help you have that confidence of being great. And then I certainly think in the age of social media, you've got to find a way to get, to get attention by sharing your ideas. So you could build your own community, you could join another community, you could post on social media." — Alisa Cohn [00:27:09 → 00:27:45]Show notes powered by Castmagic---Have any questions about the show or topics you'd like us to explore further?Shoot us a DM; we'd love to hear from you.Want the weekly TL;DR of tips delivered to your mailbox?Check out our newsletter here.Follow us for content, clips, giveaways, & updates!Castmagic InstagramCastmagic TwitterCastmagic LinkedIn ---Blaine Bolus - Co-Founder of CastmagicRamon Berrios - Co-Founder of CastmagicAlisa Cohn - CEO of Alisa Cohn & Associates, Inc.

InVision was once a prominent player in the design software space. But the company that was once valued at $2 billion announced it will be discontinuing its design-collaboration services by the end of this year. The cofounders, Clark Valberg and Ben Nadel, originally designed the software as a prototyping tool for designers but it quickly gained popularity and ultimately achieved unicorn status after raising $100 million in 2017. This was followed by another milestone when it raised $115 million, which effectively doubled its valuation. So, what happened? How did this unicorn unravel? ‘Fast Company' contributing writer Nicole Gull McElroy joined us to explain and discuss. Then we chatted with legendary English fashion designer Paul Smith who has been working in the industry for more than 50 years. Aside from the clothes, he's also heavily involved in designing the look of his stores around the world. His iconic store on L.A'.s Melrose Avenue has a bright pink wall that's been around since the early 2000s. But since the 2010s, that wall has become an Instagram hot spot with people lining up to take photos against the hot pink backdrop. Smith explained to us how the wall—which costs about $66,000 a year to maintain—has changed brand awareness, and spoke about his long career as designer-of-choice for such stars as Daniel Day-Lewis, David Bowie, and Jony Ive.

In this episode, Lisa and Ted discuss:What optometrists do and how they help people enhance their quality of life. Essential skills and qualities for those who will have a long and successful optometrist career Understanding the path from high school to graduate school for optometry. The competitive nature of optometry school and the state-specific regulations aspiring optometrists must navigate. Key Takeaways: Optometrists work with all ages, including infants, to catch any vision issues.Ophthalmology and Optometry have different but equally rigorous requirements. Optometrists work closely with Ophthalmologists for advanced eye care needs.Optometry school is very competitive; strong grades in science courses are important. Consider taking sciences outside of just biology, physics, and chemistry beginning in high school if available.Laws regarding what optometrists can do vary by state, so research where your teen may want to practice. Don't rely on your student's advisor to know everything; students should do their own research. “If you're planning on doing this, do it because you love it. Optometry is not going to make you rich. Medicine is not going to make you rich. There is never a job they will pay you enough to do. It is about doing it because you care about people, and you want to take care of people.” – Ted McElroy, O.D.About Ted McElroy, O.D.: Ted McElroy, OD, founded his practice, Vision Source Tifton, in 1994 in Tifton, GA. In this episode of UserTesting's Insights Unlocked podcast, Andy MacMillan talks with Pablo Stanley about AI's impact on design. Pablo is the founder or co-founder of several design brands, most recently Bueno and the Musho AI plugin for Figma. Previously he was a lead designer at InVision, as well as a staff designer at Lyft and Udemy. He teaches art and design on his YouTube channel Sketch Together, as well as supports the Latinx community through his projects Latinx Who Design and Dreamer Stories. “I am a techno-optimist,” Pablo said. “I believe in the potential of these tools to enhance our lives in general and, specifically, that of creative individuals, assisting them in taking their creations to a different level.” The pace of the change is happening quickly, he said, and some people may get caught in that disruption, including on the creative side, and get left behind. “It would be naive not to see the challenges this brings,” Pablo said. “The pace of the AI evolution is making traditional systems and industries slow to adapt, sometimes causing an existential crisis. So, there's going to be a transition period where a lot of people will be affected by this shift.
In this riveting episode of our podcast, I sit down with Pablo Stanley, a luminary in the world of design and a visionary at the intersection of technology and creativity. As a Latinx designer with an illustrious career spanning various high-impact roles—from the co-founder and CEO at Bueno and Blush to his groundbreaking work at Carbon Health, Lyft, InVision, and Udemy—Pablo shares his invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of design in the age of artificial intelligence. Diving deep into the future of design careers, Pablo illuminates how AI tools are not just tools of automation but beacons of innovation, opening new opportunities and frontiers for designers worldwide. His predictions for the industry are not only insightful but infused with a tech-optimistic outlook, envisioning a future where AI's speed, creative variety, and accessibility are fully embraced to enhance the creative process. Pablo's work with Musho (https://musho.ai) an AI design tool capable of transforming simple prompts into near-complete, development-ready websites, exemplifies his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in design. Alongside Musho, his involvement in Lummi (https://lummi.ai), an AI-generated image library, showcases his dedication to making design more accessible and streamlined. Beyond his professional achievements, Pablo's passion for community and education shines through his YouTube channel, Sketch Together, and his podcasts, including "Diseño Cha Cha Cha," where he interviews Latinxs in the tech industry. As the creative force behind projects like Open Peeps, Avataaars, Humaaans, Open Doodles, Bottts, and Buttsss, and as the writer and illustrator of “The Design Team” comic series, Pablo's influence on the design world is both profound and far-reaching. Join us for an inspiring conversation with Pablo Stanley, where we explore the future of design through the lens of AI, the power of creativity in technology, and the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in shaping the next generation of design tools. Whether you're a designer, engineer, or simply someone fascinated by the potential of AI, this episode promises to offer valuable perspectives on the transformative power of technology in the creative world. Today Nick and Chase sit down to reflect on their recent experience traveling together in Greece, as well as Nick's family's recent “summer test run” of a life abroad, and all the push/pull factors, concerns, and plans, associated with moving their family to a foreign country.
