Welcome to the twenty-first episode of Best Issue Ever! Today's guest is Karen Charm, who will be well-known to many X-fans for their great X-Men fan art, prints, and zines. They also do a good amount of pro work for publishers like Scholastic, so follow them pretty much across social media @charmgardens. Okay, you love them and I love them so we're back to the X-Men, baby! We're talking about Generation Next #4, right near the end of the Age of Apocalypse crossover THIRTY YEARS AGO. Time, what even is it. This issue is written by *mumbles* Scott Lobdell, drawn by Chris Bachalo and Mark Buckingham, colored by Steve Buccellato and Electric Crayon, and lettered by good ole Richard Starkings and Comicraft. This podcast is recorded in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is edited by Sara Century. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. I do not want to deal with ads AT ALL, so if you also don't want to deal with ads, please consider supporting the podcast by rating and reviewing and/or signing up at the Ko-fi or Patreon @ ko-fi.com/saracenturypodcasts. or patreon.com/saracenturypodcasts. Shaun's personal favorite is the topic of this week's episode: FABLES by Bill Willingham, Lan Medina, and Mark Buckingham. Once upon a time, all the characters from all the fairy tales lived together in harmony in their own realm, until one day they were forced into exile in our world. In our new episode, we discuss the first 2 volumes: the murder mystery of who killed Red Rose, and the violent revolt of the "non-human" fables who want to escape the farm. It's a brilliant, fun take on classic characters you *thought* you knew, told in a brand new light   Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics

It's been a while since we had one of our inspiration episodes, where we take a look at material outside of the CtD canon that we find helpful for grokking the themes of the game. We've had novels and spoopy novels, but in this episode (#THE ANSWER) we're turning to graphic novels and other visual narratives of the comic form. A professor might say, pairing text with image creates its own kind of media experience for the reader, tickling a particular set of imaginative centers in the brain that are good for conceptualizing the intricate mytho-fictive narratives of the game. But more simply put, MOAR COMIX BETTER GAME. (And even if you don't think of yourself as a "comics reader," these are worth a look.) The full list: Neil Gaiman with various artists, Sandman (and assorted spinoffs) — the original fan annotations website is archived here, but there is also an official Annotated Sandman out from DC Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans, DIE — and see the tie-in roleplaying game here! Jack Kirby and Stan Lee and so many others, X-Men Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, Monstress Winsor McCay, Little Nemo in Slumberland (and variations on the title) — in the public domain, so you can see many of the old strips (along with the excellent Krazy Kat) at the Comic Strip Library [bonus! Jamie McKelvie, Suburban Glamour] Alan Moore, Watchmen — there was a film adaptation and everything, but here's the 80s cartoon the world deserved Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, Saga — we're not going to link to merchandise websites, but you can get resin statues of plushies of the Lying Cat, if you so desire (and really, why wouldn't you?) Chris Ware, Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes Bill Willingham and (mostly) Mark Buckingham, Fables And then as usual, another list, where you can rail about how right or wrong we were about this list (although take note—limiting ourselves to eleven was tough, and we acknowledge there's a lot more out there): Discord: https://discord.me/ctp Email: podcast@changelingthepodcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082973960699 Mastodon: https://dice.camp/@ChangelingPod Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/changelingthepodcast If you join our Discord, feel free to send us your suggested stats for Hobbes the Lycian, or vote on which sidhe Houses you think Xavier and Magneto would fall into, or just talk about the episode to your hearts' contentments. our hosts Josh Hillerup (any pronoun) often trips over speech balloons and tumbles through the fourth wall. Pooka G (any pronoun/they) defies the square panel as a convention of story-binding, favoring instead the trapezoid. "Let's see if we can call time on this trend by demanding and creating big, wild comics which stretch our imaginations. Let's make living breathing, sprawling adventures filled with mind-blowing images of things unseen on Earth. Let's make artefacts that are not faux-games or movies but something other, something so rare and strange it might as well be a window into another universe because that's what it is." —Grant Morrison

Welcome back to the big run. Since the Valencia marathon, I've been struggling with my running. a niggle has been hanging around in some shape or form. it derailed my race. The weeks after haven't been the best, I've ignored and tried to run through it. Made it worse….textbook. Its' topic is a familiar one for many of us - running injuries. Whether it's a nagging pain in your knee, a twinge in your ankle or a strain in your back, we've all been there. But fear not, because we're here to talk about the next step in your injury recovery journey - visiting the physio! That's right, it's time to put on your bravest face and head to the land of heat packs and ultrasound machines. Buckle up, because this might be a bumpy ride, but the end result is worth it promise! So, one windy and wet morning I headed to the Victoria Park Harriers clubhouse in Victoria park to see Matt who was in London for clinic sessions. Matt is a 5000m and 10000m athlete who has competed for Ireland both on the roads and the track. he was English Schools 3000M champ and had a scholarship to complete a Master of Science degree at the university of new Mexico in the united states.  He co-founded the performance team alongside Mark Buckingham and works closely with several past, present, and future Olympians and Paralympians, with Athletics Ireland, the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation, and a professional track team overseas.  However, most of Matt's work is done supporting recreational runners, club-level athletes, and newcomers to the sport looking to stay injury-free, keep fit and remain healthy. He's worked with Wiggle and Hoka as well as organising running camps in Kenya. This episode was recorded live during the session and offers insight into how physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat running related injuries. We also about running mechanics in general, the "right way to run" Matt's own history with running and injury and more.  A big thank you to Matt and the performance team for being part of the episode.  You can find out more about their services at: https://www.performanceteam.co.uk/ Images courtesy of Charlie Wheeler @breakfeast_.at._tiffany and @running_trips_official  DISCLAIMER This is based on my running past, and my own personal history. Each runner has their own set of circumstances and requirements when it comes to treatment. If your looking to get treatment then get in touch with the performance team. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thebigrunpodcast/message

This episode we’re discussing the dreaded Did Not Finish! He finished 40th, and was asked to join a local tri team- but declined. Triathlon and multi sport didn't really kick off for Craig  until he went to University in Huddersfield. Here he quickly immersed himself in local community sport joining Holmfirth Athletics club (Mark Buckingham, Richard Anderson, Jonny McLean, Byram family, Rachel Mellor, Steve Rimmer, John Levick and Andrew Kerry) to name a few inspiring multisport figures! 2012 apart from being a Games maker at the Olympics and para-Olympics he took part in an ultra marathon (Round Rotherham 50mi) lots of cross country and tri's qualified for 2013 duathlon champs Ottawa (This had it's challenges, 1 mechanical and a accident, 2x attempts to qualify) and 2013 tri champs london! - but buggered that up 10 days before due to fly to Canada he fell off his bike and fractured his scapula. The Comics Alternative
Episode 165 - A Publisher Spotlight on Locust Moon Press

One of the things that has defined 2015 for The Comics Alternative has been the number of Publisher Spotlights it's presented -- seven, up until today. This week, the Two Guys are back with their eighth and final spotlight of the year, one on the fall releases out of Locust Moon Press. They begin their critical focus with a brief interview Derek conducted with Josh O'Neill, the publisher of Locust Moon Press. In that conversation, Josh shares the background and history of Locust Moon, first as a bookstore (which will be closing its doors early next year) and then as a publisher with an impressive catalog. They also discuss the press' success with Kickstarter, including last year's campaign with Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream and the current efforts with The Lost Work of Will Eisner. After that, Andy and Derek get into the nitty gritty of the show, a discussion of Locust Moon's fall releases. They begin with Prometheus Eternal, a short collection of stories inspired by Rubens's famous painting, Prometheus Bound. This work was created in collaboration with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and including work by such creators as Grant Morrison, Paul Pope, Dave McKean, Bill Sienkiewicz, Farel Dalrymple, Yuko Shimizu, and David Mack. Next, the guys turn to another collection, this one the sixth issue of Quarter Moon. The theme to this issue is "Impractical Cats," and with cat-related contributions from a variety of creators including Farel Dalrymple, Tia McClelland, Mike Sgier, Lisk Feng, Jim Comey, Gregory Benton, J.G. Jones, Dean Haspiel, Jeremy Baum, and a host of others. After that, they look at Ben Kahn and Bruno Hidalgo's Shaman, a satiric and inventive mashup of superheroes, the supernatural, and humor. Neither Andy nor Derek were aware of Shaman before this spotlight episode -- they completely missed Kahn's Kickstarter from earlier this year -- but now they're totally on board and look forward to more of this series, because it's funny as hell. Finally, the guys wrap up with a long discussion of Little Nemo's Big New Dreams, a joint effort with Françoise Mouly's TOON Graphics. This is a smaller, more affordable, and more holdable, version of the broadsheet-sized Dream Another Dream, including more than thirty strips from the Eisner Award-winning collection. And like the aforementioned Prometheus Eternal and Quarter Moon collections, this TOON book is chock-full of impressive contributors, including Art Spiegelman, Craig Thompson, Carla Speed McNeil, Mark Buckingham, Roger Langridge, Box Brown, R. Sikoryak, Jim Rugg, Yuko Shimizu, Gerhard...and the list goes on. In fact, you could even see today's show as the most creator-packed episode that the Two Guys have ever recorded.

Episode 149 - A Retrospective on Fables

This is a bittersweet episode of The Comics Alternative, because Andy and Derek are both highlighting and saying goodbye to a title that has been one of their favorites these past thirteen years, Bill Willingham's Fables (Vertigo). The series finale was just recently released -- issue #150, which also doubles at volume 22 of the trade paperbacks -- and the guys go into detail about the wrap-up of the main storyline, the final confrontation between Snow White and Rose Red that has been building over the past several narrative arcs. They also discuss the collection of "Last" stories that round out this volume, short pieces illustrated by a variety of artists that give us a final (?) glimpse at some of Fables most important characters. In fact, this episode of the podcast is very spoiler-heavy, in that Derek and Andy couldn't figure out how to do justice to the series without giving away a few important concluding plot elements. (So if you haven't yet read this last installment of Fables, then perhaps you should do so before listening to this week's show. Go ahead. The guys don't  mind. They'll still be here waiting for you.) But this episode is also a retrospective on the entire run of Fables, its many twists and turns, as well as the many spin-offs it engendered. As such, the Two Guys also touch upon Jack of Fables, the Cinderella miniseries, The Literals, Fairest, the current series Fables: The Wolf among Us, and the standalone volumes 1001 Nights of Snowfall and Fables: Werewolves of the Heartland. (Unfortunately, they don't get around to discussing the prose novel, Peter and Max. There's only just so much time in a podcast episode.) It's obvious that both Andy and Derek appreciate Fables and see it as one of the most important titles of the past decade, but being the discerning scholars that they are, the guys don't shy away from critiquing the long-running series and pointing out some of the narrative elements they found "thin" or potentially problematic. But to paraphrase a common adage, we criticize those we love the most, and the guys make it clear what kind of respect,  admiration, and outright affection they have for Fables. This episode is fond, heartfelt farewell to the team of Willingham (writer), Mark Buckingham (penciller), Steve Leialoha (inker), Todd Klein (letterer), James Jean and João Ruas (cover artists), Shelly Bond (editor), and an unparalleled community of collaborators.
