What are the big names from across the sight loss sector doing about the current provision of technology training? We have brought together a panel of guests from RNIB, AbilityNet, TAVIP, Visionary, Sight and Sound Technologies and rehabilitation specialists to discuss this issue. On last week's programme, we focused on why so many visually impaired people aren't able to access meaningful in-person technology support and what is stopping the sector from sorting it out. In this programme, we're getting some answers on what they are currently doing within this space. Presenter: Peter White Producer: Beth Hemmings Production Coordinator: Kim AgostinoWebsite image description: Peter White sits smiling in the centre of the image and he is wearing a dark green jumper. When the RNIB announced changes to the way they deliver their Technology for Life service, we at In Touch heard a lot of trepidation from listeners over where visually impaired people can now go for meaningful support with tech. We thought we'd bring together a panel of guests from some of the big names across the sight loss sector, to tease out where this kind of help can be found and, ideally, delivered in-person. This programme is part one of two, where we assess the issue with guests from RNIB, TAVIP, AbilityNet, Visionary, a Rehabilitation specialist and Sight and Sound Technologies. The subsequent programme will focus on the potential solutions to this lack of in-depth and in-person support. The use of technology is embedded into our work lives and for people with additional needs it is often assistive technology that enables them to do their job. But often the right technology is not in place or provided by employers and that is one of the topics discussed in this episode of the podcast with my guest in this week's episode Alex Barker from AbilityNet. Alex discusses why it is as much about mindset as it is about the technology itself when it comes to making sure that the right technology is provided for employees to do their jobs most effectively. https://abilitynet.org.uk/

When we think of assistive technology or any technology that can support our young people with additional needs to become more independent, we often start at the point of thinking it could be expensive or complicated to learn to use. But the reality is that today the first bit of assistive technology that our young people should access is their phone or tablet. The built-in features of these devices have changed the way we think about assistive technology as my guest in this week's episode Alex Barker from AbilityNet explains. Alex brings, his lived experience, and how he uses assistive technology, both in his role at AbilityNet and in his life to discuss why we need to make better use of what is easily accessible to all of us. https://abilitynet.org.uk/

Today on the show, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece are joined by AbilityNet's Robin Christopherson who is also the host of the Dot to Dot podcast for fans of the Echo from Amazon. Together the trio discusses the new range of iPhone 14s, including the new built-in feature that enables everyone to get access to signals even if they are out of range using new satellite technology. There's also talk about the new Pro iPhones too, with better cameras and a new display feature exclusive to the range. There's also a lot of interest from Steven on the new Apple Watch Ultra, which is intended for those who like to go hiking, climbing or do other major outdoor activities. However, Steven is convinced this is the perfect blind person's Apple Watch due to its new features, like extra and more pronounced buttons, better speakers and greater GPS accuracy. And lastly, there's the AirPods Pro 2. With new features such as a built-in speaker on the case for easier finding when lost and new adaptive transparency which dulls loud sounds, there's lots to offer the disability community at large. There are so many interesting stories like this and today on the podcast AbilityNet's own Robin Christopherson (also a cool Blind Guy) joins Steven and Shaun to discuss the various ways our lifestyles affect the planet, and also our pocket. While many of us are now used to talking to our devices to get things done, whether it be asking Alexa to play a song or asking your phone to set a timer, dictation and speech input is becoming the norm for many people as a way of inputing information into their device and getting information in return. However for many professional PC and Mac users the ability to dictate goes much further with the need to get accurate and swift words into the system for reports, dictating exact notes or compiling a book. And that's where the microphone in your device can make the difference between accuracy and inaccuracy. Disability campaigner Colin Hughes has written an extensive amount on this recently on the AbilityNet blog as he has been investigating the best physical microphones out there for this very purpose. Today on the podcast Colin shares his thoughts with Steven, Robin and Shaun. You can learn more about the work of Colin Hughes via his own website here. An inclusive workplace isn't just about supporting people of different genders, sexual orientations or races. Almost 20% of the UK has some form of disability, and it's important to make sure that our offices, applications and services are set up in a way that is accessible to these people. There are many reasons why this is a good idea; aside from being a legal requirement and a moral imperative, it can bring usability and productivity improvements for all your staff and customers, not just those with impairments.
