Pelson shares never-before-told stories from the executives and scientists who built the industry and describes how China undercut and destroyed competing equipment makers, freeing themselves to export their nation's network gear—and their surveillance state. He also reveals China's successful program to purchase the support of the world's leading political, business, and military figures in their effort to control rival nations' networks. What's more, Pelson draws on his lifelong experience in the telecommunications industry and remarkable access to the sector's leaders to reveal how innovative companies can take on the Chinese threat and work with counterintelligence and cybersecurity experts to prevent China from closing the trap. He offers unparalleled insights into how 5G impacts businesses, national security and you. Finally, Wireless Wars proposes how America can use its own unique superpower to retake the lead from China. This book is about more than just 5G wireless services, which enable self-driving cars, advanced telemedicine, and transformational industrial capabilities. It's about the dangers of placing our most sensitive information into the hands of foreign companies who answer to the Chinese Communist Party. And it's about the technology giant that China is using to project its power around the world; Huawei, a global super-company that has surged from a local vendor to a $120 billion-a-year behemoth in just a few years. For anyone curious about the hottest issue at the intersection of technology and geopolitics, Wireless Wars offers an immersive crash course and an unforgettable read. 1900 Shanghai

I said, 'That's impossible. They have like 0.1% market share. How could they have every nuclear missile site?' I started looking into it. Following in the footsteps of Chairman Mao Zedong, one of the most brutal communist leaders the world has seen, is history about to repeat itself with Xi Jinping? In this special report, we look at what Xi Jinping's third term means for China and the world, what America can expect going forward, and if the free world is about to be embroiled in war. (NOTE: we apologize for the drop in sound quality at the end of the Q&A, but we decided to keep the section because of the importance of the content) This event took place at The Institute of World Politics on September 1, 2022. About the Lecture: The U.S. and Europe have regarded the economic relationship with China as that of a trading partner, but China views things far more seriously, seeming to view the U.S. as an opponent or worse. As an executive who was at the table when Lucent transferred its operations to China and when British Telecom deployed Huawei's gear into its networks, Jon Pelson has unique insights into the benefits and risks of relying on networks provided by a company so close to the Chinese Communist Party. His access to intelligence officials also illuminated the little-known realities of Huawei's deployments around America's nuclear missile sites and the extent of the CCP in directing China's leading equipment companies to serve the geopolitical allies of China, from North Korea to Iran. But as Pelson describes, the answers to the technology conflict may not lie in political maneuvering, but in unleashing the power of free countries to innovate and surpass even the massive R&D capabilities of China's technology sector. By creating the right partnership between government and private sector, America can deliver greater solutions, faster, and help free countries retake the lead. About the Speaker: Mr. Jonathan Pelson, a telecom industry veteran and author of Wireless Wars: China's Dangerous Domination of 5G and How We're Fighting Back, tells the story of how the U.S. lost the wireless market to China and describes a path to retake the lead. The former Chief of Convergence Strategy for British Telecom and leader of organizations at other global telecom companies, he uses his extraordinary access to tell the stories of the executives who faced Huawei and China's other telecom equipment companies, describing the grave consequences to freedom and security if we don't respond to the threat of China's global ambitions. In this episode of GREAT POWER PODCAST, host Michael Sobolik speaks with Jon Pelson, author of Wireless Wars: China's Dangerous Domination of 5G and How We're Fighting Back. The conversation covers Huawei's rise to global dominance of telecommunications, the national security risks that Huawei and other Chinese tech companies pose to democracies like the United States, and how America can regain its footing in its technological competition with the Chinese Communist Party. Author Biography Jonathan Pelson joined Lucent Technologies during the telecom boom of the ‘90s, helping create and market some of the company's breakthrough technology solutions. He later served as the Chief of Convergence Strategy for British Telecom, developing a global wireless plan for the company. During his time with these and other telecom companies, he traveled to China and saw that country's fledgling telecommunications companies grow and eventually seize the world lead. With deep personal experience in the sector and rare access to the people who ran the world's largest telecom companies, he decided to investigate how the lead was lost to the Chinese and what we could do to take it back. Jon has a degree in economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia.
