In Season Two, Episode Six we had the absolute pleasure to have City Fertility's Medical Director, Fertility and Miscarriage specialist, Dr Devora Lieberman as a guest on the podcast unpacking Fertility, IVF, IVM and where to next. Dr Devora gives us an insight into a day in the life of a Fertility and Reproductive specialist and when an individual or couple should seek out a reproductive specialist. We discuss if IVF ( In vitro fertilisation ) is the only option and three important questions an individual or couple should ask a fertility specialist when considering reproductive treatment.Dr Lieberman then unpacks the terms IUI ( Intrauterine insemination ), IVF and ICSI ( Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection ) and we discuss what IVM ( In vitro maturation ) is, how it differs to IVF and where it has a place in fertility treatment. Georgia and Elizabeth learn about the research into IVM and who the perfect candidate is to have this alternative from IVF. From there Dr Devora discusses how an individual's fertility journey is their own as well as a patient being an advocate for themselves whilst undergoing treatment. We discuss live birth outcomes from Frozen and Fresh embryos and delve into the topic of IVF Add On's, what they are and when are they necessary. We finish with why a patient centred model of care is beneficial and why it is important that patients openly communicate with their fertility specialist about other treatment they are receiving. We thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful discussion and took a lot away from it, we hope you do too.For more information head to The Dao Health. Follow us on Instagram @thedao. My guest Jo and her partner Jane decided they were going to start trying for a baby.  Jo was 38 and the pair went to an open evening at a clinic to find out more. Jo was invited to have an AMH blood test and to her 'horror' was told she had low fertility. They decided to go to https://www.manchesterfertility.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyuD58eTE4AIVD5ztCh3MaQv6EAAYASAAEgJoUPD_BwE (Manchester Fertility) for their treatment. They started off choosing a sperm donor and Jo explained how they wanted someone to reflect both of their characteristics and it was important that the child didn't look too far from what she looked like - Jo is dark and Jane is blond - yet they both tan well! So they started having for IUI (Intrauterine insemination)  this didn't work and they ended up having six attempts at IUI.  Jo talked about the constant cycle of despair and how she didn't realize what an impact it had. "I was so distracted during the two-week wait and then 'it' comes." I asked about whether Jo sought out any support and she explained how she went on forums and how 'It wasn't good for my mental health' and she found them even more isolating. It's always difficult when you tell your family you are trying and they want you to have success. Jo talked about feeling a bit of pressure from her parents as she was giving them their first and only grandchild. The pair decided to go and visit their GP and when she explored the options for same-sex couples, it showed that if you have self-funded six attempts at IUI you were eligible for two rounds of IVF on the NHS. Starting IVF: These six attempts are based on the number of times a couple would have tried naturally over the course of 12 months.  Jo and Jane changed clinics from Manchester Fertility tohttps://www.carefertility.com/our-clinics/fertility-clinic-manchester/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvuf0wOXE4AIV7ZXtCh1KnggFEAAYASAAEgJF3fD_BwE ( Manchester Care,) feeling more comfortable with the care offered and Jo went straight into the IVF treatment "Not many eggs and only one survived"  Jo explained "The clinic called me and said we've only got one egg but it's a good one I was in the car and I stopped and cried and the nurse said to me, it only takes one" Post-transfer, the couple went to Cornwall for a week - something that I also did, went to the Suffolk coast and I highly commend being near water post-transfer. Something instantly calming and of course a good distraction.   Jo talked about the agony of week two, the worst part of the dreaded two-week wait and when they did a test it was a very faint line and they didn't think it has worked but it had.  Jo and I spoke about her pregnancy which I appreciate could be a trigger for you which is why I had mentioned it in the podcast, however, I wanted to hear her experience of her midwife appointments, which she said was pretty disappointing as it was assumed Jane, her partner was her 'friend' or Mum - Jo talked about having to spell it out and come out constantly. She said she ended up bursting in and saying 'This is my partner Jane' to make it less awkward.  What went wrong:Jo and Jane had a serious paperwork issue as she explained. 'We're not in a civil partnership so you have to fill out forms that I was the one carrying the child consent to Jane being recognized as the legal parent and Jane filled in the same saying she recognized herself as a parent which we did it at both clinics'  They were on holiday when they were called by their consultant to be told there was an issue with paperwork. Little did they know this would result in the pair having to go to the High Court where Sir James Munby resided over their case. Jo and Jane were told that based on the paperwork it's not clear Jane is the legal parent and it was suggested they went to the High Court a parental order. Their court proceedings took over 12 months and...

In this episode, Brandi Lytle candidly shares her 10-year infertility journey and its aftereffects, including unwarranted shame, living with severe endometriosis, debilitating pain, and intense side effects from induced medical menopause.Terms used: Birth control: Daily medication that contains 2 hormones (estrogen and progestin) to prevent pregnancy — or manage and suppress heavy periods. CNBC: Childless Not By Choice Endometriosis: A medical condition in which tissue that's similar to the lining inside the uterus, called the endometrium, is found outside the uterus where it doesn't belong. Endo belly: A term used to describe the uncomfortable, often painful, swelling and bloating that's associated with endometriosis. Endo pain (or endometriosis pain): Chronic painful period cramps, however pain may not be limited to the area around your uterus. In addition to sharp abdominal pain, some may experience back pain, rectal pain, painful bowel movements, leg pain, pain during intercourse. Follicles (or ovarian follicles): Small sacs filled with fluid that are found inside a woman's ovaries. They secrete hormones which influence stages of the menstrual cycle and women begin puberty with about 300,000 to 400,000 of them. Each has the potential to release an egg for fertilization. HSG (hysterosalpingogram): A test that uses x-rays and a special dye to detect scar tissue, polyps, fibroids, and other growths that may be blocking your tubes or preventing a fertilized egg from implanting properly in your uterus. IUI (Intrauterine insemination): A technique in which sperm are introduced directly into a woman's cervix or uterus to produce pregnancy, with or without ovarian stimulation to produce multiple ova. IVF (or In vitro fertilization): In vitro which means outside the body, is a process of fertilization by extracting eggs, retrieving a sperm sample, and then manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. The embryo(s) is then transferred to the uterus. Lupron: A medication that lowers estrogen levels in the body, typically triggering menopause-like symptoms. Male factor (or male infertility): Low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Medical menopause: Medical or induced menopause is when a woman stops producing eggs and her menstrual cycle ceases prematurely due to certain medical treatments. Unlike with natural menopause, which can take years, this process either occurs over a short period of transition time or abruptly. Ovulation: This occurs when an egg is released from your ovary. When the egg is released, it may or may not be fertilized by sperm. Ovulation predictor kits: At-home tests to determine when you're ovulating. Perimenopause (or menopause transition): This transition begins several years before menopause, as the ovaries gradually begin to make less estrogen. Perimenopause lasts up until menopause, the point when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. Scar tissue: Fibrous tissue that forms when normal tissue is destroyed by disease, injury, or surgery.Watch this interview on YouTube.com/ChildlessWomenTo support our series, visit www.AsToldByChildlessWomen.com

My guest today is Brenda, a single-mom-by-choice who had a difficult 4-year journey to motherhood and has made it her mission to help women feel empowered about their reproduction options. She shares her shock at the realization that her OBGYN never mentioned the finite window of fertility. Brenda believes that it is an important conversation to have and encourages women to be proactive in the conversation. Brenda tried IUI (Intrauterine insemination) with no results and ultimately decided to switch to donor egg IVF (In vitro fertilization). Using both a sperm and an egg donor, was difficult and quite mentally taxing decision. We discuss how she conquered her bias toward the double donor path and why she considers it one of the greatest gifts anyone has given her. Sadly, Brenda’s first two pregnancies with donor eggs ended in miscarriage. It was discovered that she had a problem with her immune system that had to be medically treated through shots and a doctor’s watchful eye. She tells me about these painful moments and explains why she kept pressing on to her goal, even when it seemed everything was against her. Brenda says that one of the things that got her through the grueling process was a support group who became a second family for her. She explains how their ups and downs helped put her own struggles in perspective and kept her on the path. Brenda’s story is very similar to my own and I feel a deep connection to her thoughts and feelings. If you are considering the single-mother-by-choice path just remember that education is key to preparing yourself for the journey. That’s why Motherhood Reimagined was created and I want to help you make informed decisions about having your own family. Some highlights of today’s conversation: The pressure Brenda felt when the prospect of marriage was not on the horizon. How a conversation with her OBGYN changed her life plan. The 4-year journey that led to many setbacks but ultimately ended with a child. The misconception that pregnancy is an easy process. The fears that arise when telling your family about your plans. The statistics that pushed Brenda into the double donor path. The immune system issue that led to specialists and difficult treatment. What the road looked like for Brenda after the miscarriages and how she carried on. The support group that kept her going. What Brenda considered in her donors and why she hopes to meet the sperm donor someday. How Brenda approaches the donor-conceived conversation with her son. How her journey has changed her perspective on family and the world around her. Why women need to take more control of their fertility.

Signe Fjord is a single-mother-by-choice who has used her experience of building a family to counsel women considering alternatives paths to motherhood and to write children books. Signe’s books celebrate family in all of its forms. Signe grew up hearing fairy tales and wishing for her life to be a fairy tale. As an adult, Sign feels that promoting fairy tales is harmful to children and grown-ups alike. Signe tells me about her decision to become a single-mother-by-choice and the long process that lead to her beautiful seven-year-old daughter. She tells me how she picked her sperm donor, and she stresses that the donor was just a small detail. Signe has written three books, Who is Picking Me Up?, Mommy and the Love Child, and Solo Mom to a Donor Child. She also continues to write to help her daughter and the other children in their life understand that families come in many shapes and sizes. Signe has given the single-motherhood-by-choice community some wonderful resources. She has some excellent points about living in the reality of family. Signe feels that many women need to change their mindset toward single motherhood. Donor-aided births are not failures or a plan B, all families should be celebrated. This a wonderful point that many women on an unconventional path to motherhood need to hear. Some highlights of today’s conversation: Signe’s early life and love of fairy tales. How fairy tales colored her view of family. Signe’s decision to be a single-mother-by-choice and the death of her “dream.” How she chose her sperm donor. Jill tried IUI (Intrauterine insemination) early on in her journey but she miscarried. She explores that disappointment with me and focuses more on how she carried on with her dream for motherhood.
