An Historic Altadena Church, Lost to the Eaton Fire, Begins the Long Journey to Resurrection The Eaton Fire reached deep into the sanctuaries of Altadena's faith community. It lost over a dozen places of worship: Baptist, Episcopalian, Jewish, Methodist, Muslim, and Evangelical Christian. There's a lot of talk now about how and when people can rebuild their homes in Altadena. But how to rebuild a church, mosque or synagogue? And how do faith leaders keep their congregations together in the meantime? Reporter Steven Cuevas takes us to one of the largest churches in this community. On Catalina Island, A Resilient Swimmer Finds Freedom in Open Water Our series on resilience continues with ultra-ironman athlete Suzy Degazon. Watching her compete, it's hard to believe she was once so weak her heart had trouble beating. But Degazon battled an eating disorder for many years. It was so severe, doctors told her family she would likely die from it. But she battled back, and these days, she's a scuba instructor on Catalina Island, a dream job in a dream location. Reporter Lusen Mendel caught up with Degazon as she took a sunrise swim in the ocean. A Scientist's Fight to Save Catalina Island's Plant Biodiversity Catalina Island is known for its scenic hiking trails, campsites, beaches and for being a popular tourist destination for cruise ships. But it's also known for its biodiversity — the island is home to more than 60 different native plants and animals. As plant manager for the Catalina Island Conservancy, Kevin Alison's job is to care for all the island's plants, though he has an affinity for the rare ones that are battling invasive species. He spends much of his time in a lab deep inside Catalina's interior, where he clones plant tissue and propagates them. Reporter Steven Rascón spent some time with Allison and followed his quest to save as many native plants as possible. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Born in Japan and raised between the strong cultural frameworks of his Japanese mother and his Jewish-American military father, Lieber lived in fourteen different places by the time he was 14. Today I spoke with Ronald Okuaki Lieber about his new book, The Long Journey Out (Resource Publications, 2023) These poems are arranged in four sections: Setting, The Way Across, Bridge, And Back. Lieber, a practicing psychoanalyst, says that this follows the structure from "psychedelic journey work.” Throughout the collection, Lieber (who lived in fourteen localities the first fourteen years of his life as an army brat) is a master of mise-en-scène; each poem located somewhere more or less specific. The vicissitudes of the specificity change to meet the reader on the journey out. For me, this is movingly demonstrated in what I interpret as the central poem on the journey, Gare Montparnasse: The Melancholy of Departure, read beautifully by Lieber in the interview. Gare Montparnasse is a specific point of departure. The train, however, will not stop in our small provincial village.” Where is the village? The reader gets to decide. Lieber considers his poems “as children” and would like to know how they're doing in the world. “I want an audience for the for these poems. I want to know, oh, 'they did nothing to me'. Or ‘they evoked something' or whatever. Anything. So, they're not just stillborn in a vacuum. My personal investment is to send my poems into the world and they will fare as they fare. But I want them to run into others.” He would like to hear from all readers and can be reached through his website. Learn more about your ad choices. Andrea transformed her life from owning an insurance agency for 14 years to becoming a holistic health and mindset coach following a significant health crisis. Approximately eight years into running her agency, she developed multiple health conditions including mold toxicity, lyme disease, EBV, leaky gut, candida, breast implant illness, and lupus, accompanied by severe anxiety and panic attacks. This health crisis, while initially devastating, became a turning point in her life. It forced her to look inward and begin listening to her body's true needs for healing. After years of putting herself last and pushing through, she had to prioritize her mental and physical wellbeing. Following extensive consultations with various doctors, she took control of her healing journey by studying nutrition and learning to interpret her body's needs. Her dietary journey evolved from being Vegan for 5 years to Vegetarian, then Keto, and finally to a Carnivore diet, which she has maintained for 9 months. The switch to a Carnivore diet has brought her more healing than she experienced in the previous decade. Her health improvements include: - Normalization of her menstrual cycle after years of irregularity - Complete elimination of sugar cravings after 20+ years of severe cravings - Increased energy levels - Healthy weight gain - Enhanced mental focus - Increased libido - Reduced inflammation - First-time experience of true satiation - Reduced anxiety levels Drawing from her personal decade-long healing journey and education, she now helps others develop their own healing strategies. She believes in the power of small daily changes to build strength, clarity, and joy. Andrea finds her greatest fulfillment in walking alongside others on their health journeys, providing education, support, and guidance. The Kingdom is communal by nature, v. 11-16Three Taverns was a real place some two thousand years ago on the Appian Way, just outside of Rome. It was a traveler's rest and is mentioned in the book of Acts. We don't know much about it, but from stories we're told it was a place of thanksgiving and communal hospitality. We imagine Three Taverns as a place weary travelers in the ancient world found rest, community, and conversation—centered around food and drink at the table. Though the world has changed immensely since days of the Roman Empire, the culture of the table has been a constant throughout the ages. At Three Taverns, we believe, as we gather at the table and share our lives together over good food and drink, we are formed at our best as humans. Microsoft just announced a massive quantum computer breakthrough that uses an entirely new state of matter. The new quantum computer uses topological superconductors to create stable qubits with low error rates. Topological superconductors enable stable qubits by utilizing Majorana zero modes to protect quantum information from decoherence. The result: Microsoft should have a fault-tolerant usable quantum computer this decade. As in, before 2030.In this TechFirst, we talk with Microsoft's head of quantum hardware, Chetan Nayak, who has been working on solving this problem for literally 19 years, and he talks us through the technology and what it means for quantum computer. He explains the methods to measure this new state non-destructively, the novel architecture that leverages it, and Microsoft's ambitious roadmap towards building a fault-tolerant quantum computer within this decade. Send us a textI'm thrilled to share the latest episode of the "Endless Possibilities Podcast" with you. This time, we dive deep into the realms of spiritual awakening and self-realization with our incredible guest, Harri, a seasoned author and spiritual teacher. Here's a sneak peek into the enlightening conversation we had:Key Takeaways from the Episode:The Nature of Consciousness: Harri shares profound insights on how consciousness is a simple yet intricate journey, much like the evolution of cars from the Model T to modern self-driving vehicles.Intellectual Understanding vs. Direct Experience: We discuss how intellectual understanding can deepen the experience of self-realization, but it's the direct, profound knowingness that truly transforms. Witnessing Consciousness: Learn about the shift from identifying with thoughts and emotions to recognizing a witnessing consciousness, a concept popularized by Eckhart Tolle.Stages of Awakening: Harry explains the journey of self-realization as a progression from witnessing to a deeper understanding of unity, likening it to paddling down a river towards a vast ocean.Unity Consciousness: Discover how unity consciousness is about expanding the self rather than dissolving boundaries, leading to a richer, more integrated experience of life.Masculine and Feminine Energies: Explore the interplay between pure awareness (masculine) and dynamic energy (feminine) in the context of consciousness.Kundalini Energy: Harry elaborates on how the dynamic force of shakti rising and merging with pure awareness affects both consciousness and the body. The Eternal and Infinite Self: Reflect on the nature of unity consciousness as an eternal and infinite state of self-realization, encouraging a deeper understanding of the divine quality present in all aspects of life. Why You Should Listen:Personal Growth: Gain insights that can help you on your own spiritual journey, whether you're just starting out or have been exploring for years.Practical Wisdom: Harri's stories and analogies make complex spiritual concepts accessible and relatable.Thank you for being a part of our journey.
Reflecting on a quote by Thich Nhat Hanh which says "There is not one action or one ritual that will bring you liberation" It require continual effort and commitment to practice. Mary discusses how this flies in the face of our culture's belief that it is up to us to find the fix that will bring us success or happiness or instant gratification. As we deal with the problems of the world and of our lives, we need to remember to be present, to open to the moment and to allow things to be as they are. Episode 86. Several big international changes have occurred since the last episode was released on the 9th of January. America witnessed another peaceful transfer of power, though it was immediately followed by some executive orders that are anything but peaceful, and Israeli hostages were exchanged for Palestinian prisoners as part of a ceasefire. These small steps are part of much longer national journeys that will affect many people for years to come. Today's guest, Dan Miller––professor, co-host of the Straight White American Jesus podcast, and former evangelical pastor––has stepped out of his usual discussion of White Christian Nationalism in America to talk with me about his own personal faith journey. Over the years of observance and theological training, Dan has shifted from believer to critic, though he is back in a church community. You'll hear many reminders of why thinking deeply and critically is so valuable. Highlights: · Complex Identity and Faith Transformation · Evangelicalism: Biblical Authority and Social Conservatism· Leaving Evangelicalism for Social Justice· Biblical contradictions and complexity · Justice and Jesus of Nazareth· “All we can do is the next right thing.”Social Media link for Dan: Website – Straight White American Jesus Email – DanielMillerswaj@gmail.comSocial Media links for Méli:Website – Talking with God ProjectLinkedIn – Meli SolomonFacebook – Meli SolomonTranscript on BuzzsproutFollow the podcast! The Living Our Beliefs podcast offers a place to learn about other religions and faith practices. In 2011, JP Riley's Act Naturally introduced audiences to Bear Lake, a fictional nudist resort inherited by two estranged stepsisters. The film became a cult favorite among naturists, praised for its humor, heart, and authentic portrayal of nudism. Now, after over a decade, Riley is ready to unveil Act Super Naturally, a sequel that's been as tumultuous behind the scenes as the fictional resort's drama.Read the original article at www(dot)planetnude(dot)co This is a public episode. One Year Bible Podcast: Join Hunter and Heather Barnes on 'The Daily Radio Bible' for a daily 20-minute spiritual journey. Engage with scripture readings, heartfelt devotionals, and collective prayers that draw you into the heart of God's love. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible podcast! I'm your host, Hunter, and today is January 1st, 2025. As we kick off this new year, we're embarking on a transformative journey through the Bible, reading the Old Testament once and the New Testament twice. Together, we'll immerse ourselves in scripture, reflect, and pray, as we draw closer to Jesus and His boundless love. In today's episode, we dive into the foundational chapters of Genesis, exploring the creation story, and begin the Gospel of Luke, witnessing the miraculous announcements of John the Baptist and Jesus' births. We'll discuss living a shame-free life through Christ and encourage you to say "yes" to His presence and forgiveness. Join us for a time of prayer and reflection, and let's start this year by focusing our hearts on the one who offers us true, abundant life. Remember, dear ones, you are loved. Let's get started! TODAY'S DEVOTION: Shame free living. That's how the story begins. God created man and woman, and they were without shame. But in the chapters ahead, we are going to see that they have been robbed of a life without shame. We'll soon read all about it. We'll also read about the devastation that ensues. But as we read through the whole story of God, we're going to find that it doesn't end there. No. That would be bad news. But this is good news. And the good news is that God has sent his one and only son, the second Adam. And he's going to do everything necessary for us to get back to a life without shame. A life lived with God. That's the whole point of this amazing story of the Bible. That this has been given to us. God has come to us at our lowest, the most shame filled places of our lives. Christ has come to meet us there, and he offers us there a real abundant shame free life. Some of you went through this last year carrying a lot of shame, but this year can be different. This year, you can come to him, not just pages in a book, but to Christ himself who is present with you and in you. And you can begin to open up your heart to him so that he might set you free from all the ways that shame has crippled your life. The prayer that I have for my own soul today is that you and I would have the same spirit and heart that Mary had when she heard the good news. She said yes to it. She said yes. May it be unto me as you have just said. Maybe she didn't understand all of it. No doubt she didn't. But she was ready to say yes to God. And maybe that's something that you can do today. Even though you don't understand all things, you can say yes to him who does. You can say yes If you've heard like I heard today in the reading that God intends for us to live without shame, then say yes to that. If you have heard as I have heard today that Jesus has come to take that shame away, To take away any barrier that would keep us from a life with him? Then maybe you and I can both say yes to that. Let me encourage you to say it, even in your unbelief. Go ahead and say it now. Yes, God. I believe. Help me in my unbelief. I say yes to your presence in my life. I say yes to your forgiveness. I say yes to the hope that I can live without shame and in your strength. Maybe you just need to whisper it to yourself. Maybe you need to shout it out loud. It's important that we begin wherever we can. And maybe today, that beginning is simply a whisper of faint hope that maybe it's true. That maybe we can be free. Maybe God really is with us. Maybe Christ really doesn't live in you. Maybe you really are loved by God. Maybe there's a way to live without shame. And to that, I say, yes. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Corporate travel has been ripe for disruption for quite some time, so why is it taking so long?Road warriors hate the tools they are compelled to use (and frequently bypass), travel managers hate the cat-and-mouse games they have to play to enforce policy on their employees and to police rates and configuration rules with their TMC partners. Suppliers hate the complexity involved in getting the right offers to the right customers. TMCs hate the goat rodeo of program leakage and shoe-horning new technology services on legacy tech platforms. We've seen some innovation around the edges, but it comes in fits and starts and struggles to realize the transformative traction that truly shifts the paradigm. Is it a technology challenge, a commercial challenge, or a bit of both? Will disruption come from the travelers themselves — a new generation of road warriors that refuses to go along with the status quo? Will suppliers finally gain the upper hand over intermediaries via NDC or direct booking commercial arrangements? Will AI be the straw that breaks the back of legacy tech platforms that simply can't keep up?Who is leading the way, and when will we get there?Follows:Gilad Berenstein - hostCara Whitehill – hostSteve Singh - guestGo Deeper:Hotel Chains Bet on New Ways of Selling to Corporate Travelers - SkiftFormer Expedia exec's startup uses AI to help smaller companies book travel - TechcrunchTransforming Corporate Travel: An Open Roadmap to Fixing a Broken System – MadronaBlockskye Ready for the Long Journey to Transformation – Business Travel NewsBusiness Travel Would Be Booming—if Flying Weren't So Miserable – Wall Street Journal [$]

Today's episode features Mark Haber talking about his brand new novel, Lesser Ruins, his influence, the Bernhard thing, going from bookselling to publishing, and much more. It's a fun conversation that goes deep into the book, but also explains the publishing landscape to some degree—in part because this conversation was recorded as part of Chad's "Intro to Literary Publishing" class. Couple other notes about this episode: In addition to Lesser Ruins, Mark talks about Melvill by Rodrigo Fresán, and True Failure by Alex Higley. And for anyone who'd like to listen to "Marcel's Mix" while reading Lesser Ruins, you can find it here. The music on this episode is "Momma, It's a Long Journey" by Felipe Gordon.
