If you have ever assumed that navigating fertility is a journey meant solely for the female body, this conversation is here to completely change your perspective. Host Dr. Natalie Crawford breaks down the stark biological reality of male reproductive health, focusing on why waiting a full year before checking a semen analysis is a massive, time-wasting mistake for hopeful couples. By pulling back the curtain on what actually happens in the embryology lab, this episode highlights the deep connection between everyday lifestyle choices and the genetic integrity of sperm. Ultimately, it emphasizes that a successful pregnancy requires an absolute "army of sperm" and shifts the narrative toward proactive, mutual preparation well before entering the conception window. What You'll Learn: The Myth of the Single Cell: Why the common phrase "it just takes one" is a dangerous misconception for natural conception and the mechanical reason an egg requires a massive collective effort to crack open. The Calculated Total Motile Sperm Threshold: How multiplying specific volume and movement parameters dictates your eligibility for an IUI, and why dropping "injured players" on the 50-yard line rarely bypasses structural damage. The Day Three Embryonic Halt: The specific genetic window inside the IVF lab where an unaddressed DNA fragmentation issue causes development to completely stall out as the paternal genome takes over. The Tingly Shampoo Interruption: How common personal care ingredients hidden in daily routines mimic female hormones, risking physical changes like gynecomastia and suppressed testosterone production. The Invisible Lab Consequences of Cannabis: Why a standard semen analysis can look completely normal on paper while active toxic exposure is simultaneously driving up partner miscarriage rates behind the scenes. Topics covered in this episode include: sperm production and how it's made, semen analysis and what it shows, hormones and medical issues affecting sperm, lifestyle and environmental impacts on sperm, when to use IUI versus IVF, advanced sperm testing and procedures, practical sperm health recommendations 00:00 sperm production and how sperm is made 03:35 hormones, testosterone, and what semen analysis can reveal 11:25 semen analysis details: count, volume, movement, and shape 14:59 lifestyle and environmental factors that impact sperm 18:51 when IUI helps, when IVF is needed, and why “it just takes one sperm” is misleading 22:35 advanced sperm testing (DNA fragmentation) and testicular sperm extraction 26:42 practical recommendations to support sperm health and next steps for testing Host Resources: Order The Fertility Formula! https://www.nataliecrawfordmd.com/book Newsletter: nataliecrawfordmd.com/newsletter Instagram: @nataliecrawfordmd Youtube Channel: Natalie Crawford MD Interested in becoming a patient?: Fora Fertility Earn FREE CE/CME: Learn at Pinnacle App This episode is brought to you by The Pinnacle Podcast Network. Today's episode is a really special one because Ali is sitting down with three of her favorite people in the world: Helen, Aaron, and Blake—the real-life family behind her “Work of ART” children's book, Beautiful Bird.If you've read the book, then you already know a little bit about Jack Bird, the incredible boy at the center of the story. And today, you're going to hear the real origin story. This is a conversation about love, friendship, family building, and creating a family that looks different than what many of us grew up seeing—but is every bit as beautiful. Helen always knew she wanted to be a mom, and as a solo mom by choice, she embarked on a journey to build her family with the help of her dear friend Aaron. At the time, Aaron was building a life with his partner, Blake, and together, the three of them created a beautiful, intentional village around Jack from the very beginning.Ali, Helen, Blake and Aaron talk about fertility treatments, donor conception, LGBTQ+ family building, and what it means to redefine family in a way that puts love, honesty, and a child's well-being first. They also talk about one of the most difficult chapters of their journey: Jack's unexpected 33-day stay in the NICU after he was born, and how that experience shaped all of them as parents and as a family. Most of all, this is a story about showing up for one another. It's about friendship becoming family, about creating your own blueprint, and about the many different ways people can build a loving home.Snag a copy of Beautiful Bird for just $15 here: https://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksEPISODE SPONSORS: THE WORK OF ART BOOK SERIESAli's Children's Book Series about IVF, IUI and Family Building Through Assisted Reproductive Technology https://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksThe 3-book bundle is now just $49 (normally $79)!The latest book in the Work of ART series, “You Are a Work of ART," is for every kiddo born through ART -- and the people who love them.PHERDALIG: @pherdal_sciencePherDal is the world's first and only FDA-cleared, sterile, at-home insemination kit designed to help people build their families in the comfort of home. Fertility Docs Uncensored Today's episode of Fertility Docs Uncensored is hosted by Dr. Carrie Bedient from the Fertility Center of Las Vegas, Dr. Susan Hudson from Texas Fertility Center, and Dr. Abby Eblen from Nashville Fertility Center. In this episode, Understanding Decreased Ovarian Reserve, the doctors take a deep dive into what decreased ovarian reserve means and how it can impact fertility treatment and family-building decisions. The episode begins with a discussion of how ovarian reserve is evaluated and why several different tests are used together to provide a more complete picture. The docs explain the roles of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol levels, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and antral follicle count (AFC), and how these factors interact in assessing a woman's remaining egg supply. The hosts then define decreased ovarian reserve and discuss factors that may increase a woman's risk, including smoking, prior chemotherapy exposure, and inherited conditions such as Fragile X premutation's. The conversation also focuses on treatment options and why fertility specialists often recommend a more proactive approach for patients with decreased ovarian reserve. The doctors explain that a lower egg count does not always mean poor egg quality, particularly in younger women, but it can mean that time is an important factor. They review treatment strategies ranging from ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination (IUI) to in vitro fertilization (IVF), and discuss realistic expectations for IVF outcomes. While patients with decreased ovarian reserve may produce fewer eggs during treatment, many can still achieve successful pregnancies with appropriate care and individualized treatment plans. This episode is sponsored by IVF Florida.
In this episode of Dismantling You, I sit down with Dr. Drew Tortoriello, Medical Director at Sher Fertility, to demystify one of the most misunderstood options in reproductive medicine: intrauterine insemination (IUI). We dig into why IUI is often the right first step for couples facing unexplained infertility, how a thoughtful, non-aggressive approach can lead to better outcomes, and why knowing your numbers matters long before you ever think you'll need a fertility specialist. Dr. Tortoriello brings both deep clinical expertise and a refreshing honesty about the limits of medicine, reminding us that even the best science cannot guarantee outcomes. We also explore what proactive reproductive health really looks like in your 20s and 30s, the role of egg freezing as a hedge against future infertility, and why stress alone does not cause infertility (despite what the headlines say). Dr. Tortoriello shares his perspective on the emotional grieving process so many couples experience, the importance of patient education, and what genuine self-care looks like for a physician at the top of his field. Whether you're actively trying to conceive, planning ahead, or simply curious about what reproductive endocrinology really involves, this conversation will give you a clearer, calmer framework for understanding your options.Key Highlights
Could the very habits you believe are improving your health actually be making it harder for you to get pregnant? Many women trying to conceive are doing everything they've been told is healthy like working out intensely, fasting, eating low-fat foods, loading up on raw salads, and taking a standard prenatal. But when your goal is fertility, some of these habits can create additional stress on the body, disrupt hormone balance, and make conception more challenging. In this episode you'll learn...-Which popular health habits can act as hidden hormonal stressors when you're trying to conceive.-Why these habits may negatively impact ovulation, progesterone levels, nutrient absorption, and overall fertility.-Simple fertility-friendly swaps you can start implementing today to better support your hormones and increase your chances of pregnancy.Press play now to learn the five surprising habits that may be holding back your fertility and discover practical changes that can help your body become more pregnancy-ready.
On this episode, we're talking about something that affects millions of fertility patients—but that almost nobody talks about until the bill shows up: reproductive tissue storage. If you have embryos, eggs, or sperm in storage, you know the drill. Every year, another invoice arrives. Maybe it's $600. Maybe it's $800. Maybe it's over $1,000. Most people just pay it because they assume that's the cost. But what if it isn't? Ali's guest today is Charlie Boyer, CEO and Co-Founder of Generations CryoVault, and he's on a mission to shake up an industry that he believes has gotten way too comfortable charging fertility patients more and more for storage. Charlie's background is actually in financial services and cord blood storage, but after taking a closer look at reproductive tissue storage, he started asking some uncomfortable questions: Why are prices so high? Why don't patients know they have options? And why are so many clinics owned by private equity firms without patients even realizing it? In this conversation, Ali and Charlie talk about transparency, private equity, patient choice, and Generation CryoVault's new Pricing Promise, which aims to dramatically lower the cost of long-term embryo, egg, and sperm storage. They also discuss whoownsyourcare.org, how to find out who actually stores your tissue, and what questions every fertility patient should be asking their clinic. Whether you have embryos in storage right now, you're considering fertility treatment, or you're just curious about where all those fertility dollars are going, this is a fascinating conversation about an often-overlooked part of the family-building journey. For more info, go to https://gencryo.com/IG: @generationscryovaultEPISODE SPONSORS: THE WORK OF ART BOOK SERIESAli's Children's Book Series about IVF, IUI and Family Building Through Assisted Reproductive Technology https://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksThe 3-book bundle is now just $49 (normally $79)!The latest book in the Work of ART series, “You Are a Work of ART," is for every kiddo born through ART -- and the people who love them.PHERDALIG: @pherdal_sciencePherDal is the world's first and only FDA-cleared, sterile, at-home insemination kit designed to help people build their families in the comfort of home. Today, Dr. Kristin Brogaard is joining me today to talk about the Path Fertility SpermQT test. I'm so excited to have her share about the test, because as you'll hear her say "lots of infertility goes undiagnosed because men go undiagnosed, and when men go undiagnosed, women go through procedures that will not work." (Who else wants to see this on a bumper sticker?) While sperm were long considered to be just carriers of DNA, it turns out they are a lot more complex than that! Understanding the sperm side of the equation can help anyone trying to conceive better understand what's going on, and help them figure out the best plan to get pregnant. A few exciting highlights from our discussion: Male and sperm epigenetics play a big role in getting pregnant, and having a successful live birth. The SpermQT test can tell someone if their sperm is excellent, average, or poor quality. - Knowing this information can help you and your doctor determine the most efficient and appropriate next steps in your treatment or protocols. Understanding the quality of the sperm can lead to better outcomes. If it is "excellent," there is an increased likelihood of IUI working, even in cases where doctors thought sperm might be the issue with getting pregnant. If sperm quality is "poor," you may want to try making lifestyle changes to improve sperm quality, and retest. - Poor sperm quality often correlates with other longer term health issues for men, as sperm acts as a "canary in the coal mine." (an early warning system) Dr. Kristin Brogaard has a PhD from Northwestern University where she developed a novel epigenetic technology that allowed for a more accurate understanding of gene expression in health and disease cells. She is now the chief scientific officer of Path Fertility, whose goal is to raise the standard in male reproductive health, starting with male infertility. Thank you for joining us, Kristin! What if everything you were told about your fertility, wasn't the full picture? In today's episode, I'm sitting down with my client Brittany, who takes us behind the scenes of a journey that began with a PCOS diagnosis, one that didn't fully reflect what was actually happening in her body. This diagnosis was then followed by a devastating miscarriage and mounting pressure to move forward with IUI. But her story didn't end there. What unfolded instead will challenge what you think you know about fertility diagnoses and timelines and what can shift when you get access to the right testing and work with someone who looks beyond just medical interventions. We talk about the moment everything changed, when deeper testing revealed that her hormone levels didn't align with a PCOS diagnosis at all, and instead pointed to an entirely different root cause. We dive into her protocol that followed her comprehensive hormone testing, and the tension she navigated between her impatience to move forward with treatment and learning to trust me, the process and her body along the way. Not that long ago, Brittany was exactly where you might be right now, searching for answers, weighing her options, and wondering what to do next. But when you trust your gut, find the right practitioner, and continue to surround yourself with success stories like hers, you're getting one step closer to getting and staying pregnant. In episode #440 of The Hormone Puzzle Podcast, our guest, Lindsay Chu, talks about The Hidden Factors That Shape Egg Quality and Embryo Development. More about Lindsay Chu: Lindsay Chu is an Embryologist, Fertility Optimization Coach, and Reproductive health strategist who blends clinical science with whole body wellness to help individuals and couples finally understand what their fertility is telling them. She began her career at Walt Disney Studios as a personal trainer, group fitness director, and nutritionist before earning her Master's in Reproductive Clinical Science and transitioning fully into reproductive health. Lindsay has worked inside some of the most respected fertility centers in the country, including CCRM and Kindbody, across their embryology, andrology, and endocrinology laboratories. This experience gave her a front row understanding of what truly influences egg quality, sperm health, embryo development, and implantation success. After seeing how many patients felt confused, dismissed, and unsupported between appointments, Lindsay founded OVAHaul. Her goal was to create a science based, compassionate space where people could access clear guidance on the modifiable factors that impact fertility. OVAHaul was built to close the gap between clinical treatment and whole body optimization and to give patients the understanding, structure, and strategy they often never receive in traditional care. Today, Lindsay brings her clinical perspective and coaching experience together to help women and couples strengthen the factors that matter most. She focuses on inflammation, metabolic health, environmental exposures, immune triggers, stress physiology, and mitochondrial function. Her approach empowers those who feel overwhelmed or unheard and gives them clarity, a personalized plan, and renewed confidence as they prepare for conception, IUI, or IVF. Thank you for listening! Today on Infertile AF, Ali is talking to Kat — better known online as @theivfbaby. And yes, that's exactly what it sounds like: Kat was conceived through IVF herself, long before people were openly talking about infertility, assisted reproduction, or what it means to grow up as an IVF-conceived person. Now, she's using TikTok and Instagram to normalize IVF from a perspective we rarely hear — the IVF-conceived person herself. Through myth-busting videos and answering the questions people are sometimes too afraid to ask, Kat is helping break down stigma in a big way.In this episode, she shares her full story — what it was like learning she was conceived through IVF, how it's shaped her identity, the good and bad reactions she gets online, and why she believes visibility matters so much right now. They also talk about misinformation, the weird comments people make about IVF babies and why she's so passionate about changing the conversation around ART.EPISODE SPONSORS: THE WORK OF ART BOOK SERIESAli's Children's Book Series about IVF, IUI and Family Building Through Assisted Reproductive Technology https://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksThe 3-book bundle is now just $49 (normally $79)!The latest book in the Work of ART series, “You Are a Work of ART," is for every kiddo born through ART -- and the people who love them.PHERDALIG: @pherdal_sciencePherDal is the world's first and only FDA-cleared, sterile, at-home insemination kit designed to help people build their families in the comfort of home. Today's guest is someone so many of you already know and love from IG and TikTok—Loren Rosko—and her story goes way beyond the viral song parodies and infertility anthems. Loren started making TikToks during COVID, at a time when so many of us were feeling isolated and searching for connection. What began as a creative outlet quickly turned into something much bigger—a space where she could share everything she was going through in life, including navigating infertility. In this episode, Ali and Loren get into all of it, including PCOS, miscarriage, IVF, loss, what it feels like to share something so personal to a community of millions. Loren also talks about being pregnant—and due very soon — with her baby girl, and how she's used humor, honesty, and music to make people feel less alone.
