This week writer, adventurer, coffee drinker, ultra runner, and all around awesome guy Brendan Leonard is back on the podcast!! Brendan is the creator of Semi-Rad where he writes and draws about outdoor adventures, travel, life philosophies, chasing passions, and all sorts of human experiences. Truly some of my favorite things on the internet are found on Semi-Rad! He also directed and produced "How to Run 100 Miles", a wonderful film about him and his buddy Jayson Sime's quest to train for and finish Run Rabbit Run. In this episode we talk about Brendan's new book "I Hate Running and You Can Too" which is a fantastic read that, while focusing on this "irrational passion" of running, really can be seen as a guide to how one approaches any sort of passion in life. I read the book in one sitting and it is loaded with pertinent and quite often hilarious charts and drawings to emphasize his ideas. I can honestly say that I think this book gets it. I really related to it and found myself thinking "Holy moly, he nailed EXACTLY why I love ultra running and what I've found out about myself and the world through competing in this crazy activity. In this episode we talk Brendan's book, trail running, a love of films, snakes falling from the sky, amongst many other things! I had an absolute blast recording this one and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did! Definitely check out Semi-Rad and "I Hate Running and You Can Too" Keep up the amazing work Brendan!! (Cover Photo by Randy Ericksen) This week on the show we are reconnecting with public speaker, coach, ultra runner, and creator of Right to Shine Jayson Sime. We last spoke with Jayson on Episode #85 about Brendan Leonard's fantastic short film "How to Run 100 Miles", one of the best ultra running films out there and the story of Jayson and Brendan's very first 100 miler. This time we are chatting about his second 100 mile attempt at the Black Hills 100. I think you can discern from this episode's title that the race didn't quite go as planned, resulting in a DNF after 82.5 tough miles. In this episode, Jayson shares the lessons he learned from that experience as it applies to both ultra running and everyday life. We also chat about how to rebound from, process, and grow from a DNF. As a public speaker, author and coach Jayson uses his optimism and his energy to help people reach for their full potential. Please check out his website www.righttoshine.com for more info and some awesome personal growth articles! Hope you all enjoy the show!! Jayson was raised in poverty, was bullied because of a learning disability, was 75lbs overweight, abused anti-depressants and felt he was wasting his life. Watching his mom raise 6 kids inspired him to tackle his challenges head on and stick with it long enough to succeed. Jayson found yoga and slowly made better health choices. He took ownership of his life. Jayson shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom: - spend time on self reflection - when considering a life change, make sure you know the 'why' - if you're committed, resources will come your way and you will accomplish your goals - face obstacles with a positive outlook - start with a baby step and don't get overwhelmed - find a mentor - be kind to others - give back, as you go through your transformation - ask yourself "who can I serve today?" - believe in the potential of others http://righttoshine.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Self-Care-Hacks-Performance-Well-Being-Happiness/dp/0692068007/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=self+care+hacks+jayson+sime&qid=1564015442&s=books&sr=1-1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC7Lh4opLsc https://www.instagram.com/righttoshine/?hl=en https://twitter.com/jaysonsime?lang=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaysonsime tags: Jayson, Sime, righttoshine, coach, speaker, trainer, author, writer, Self, Care, Hacks, Performance, Well, Being, Happiness, storiesthatempower.com, stories that empower, empowering stories, empowerment stories, stories of empowerment, stories of empowering others, self empowerment stories, stories empower, inspire, inspiring, inspiration, uplift, uplifting, upliftment, hope, light, Sean
This week, Catherine reconnects with an old friend – Jayson Sime. He opens up about the powerful difference between surviving and thriving, and the changes he made to get beyond survival. They also discuss Jayson's plunge into politics, the importance of self-care, and when he decided to become a yoga teacher. Jayson has led an incredible path to get to where he is today and there's a bit of something for everyone in his story.
On today’s episode, we speak with political consultants Jayson Sime and Kate Duch of One Minus Beta about the process and politics of the 2020 process to produce a Democratic nominee for President. How are the rules different this year? How will a large field of candidates change the race? Which lesser-known candidate has a chance to breakthrough? Those are all questions we tackle. We also talk about Jayson's Syme role as a health coach, trainer, and speaker through his project called Right to Shine.
Jayson Sime and Brendan Leonard from 'How To Run 100 Miles' join the Michaels to talk life, ultrarunning, growing up in Iowa, and all things surrounding their FANTASTIC documentary. (Cover Photo by Josh Perez) This week I was lucky enough to have Brendan Leonard and Jayson Sime come over and chat with me about their excellent film "How to Run 100 Miles". We recorded this "live" in studio....aka outside on the porch in my back yard (It was a 60 degree day and this is an outdoor podcast...so I thought "what the heck?") If you have not seen the film, do yourself a favor and check it out immediately. It is the inspiring, touching, and often hilarious story of these two friends and their quest to train for and run their first 100 mile ultramarathon through the rugged mountains of Northern Colorado. Their 100 mile experience connected on so many levels, but to me the film is an ode to true friendship and, more specifically, to the people in our lives who always say "why not?". My absolute favorite type of people who push us and challenge us to do more and be more than anything we ever thought possible. These two are shining examples. They come up with crazy ideas, train their butts off, support each other through and through and then get it done. For ultrarunners the film connects on the ideas of pushing through discomfort, dealing with pain and suffering, and how to handle....errrr...stomach issues in the woods. I'm very excited to share this conversation! Both Brendan and Jayson are fascinating people in their own rights, but you get them together and they completely shine. Cracking jokes, sharing stories, challenging each other, sharing the emotional moments, and everything else that comes from wonderful lifelong friendships. Brendan Leonard is an adventure, travel, and human experience writer who's work has appeared in Backpacker, National Geographic, Outside, Men's Journal, and other publications. He has also written a few books "Sixty Meters to Anywhere" and "The Great Outdoors: a User's Guide". He's a climber, mountaineer and all around adventure athlete who blogs about outdoor adventures for the "Everyman and Everywoman" at www.semi-rad.com. Jayson Sime is a public speaker, life coach and Bikram Yoga Instructor who's mission is to spread the message that everyone has the potential to become their best selves. He has started "Right to Shine" as a way to spread positivity and goodness to everyone around him. The Underdog is the most potent myth in America. Is this special type of hero just a myth or is the underdog real? Jayson Sime was a small town Iowa kid from the tough part of town. He was told he wouldn't amount to much by his teachers and hazed by his peers. From north of nowhere to a career in politics to Mount Shasta's summit, Jayson has overcome. Maybe heroes are real.
