After last weeks showcase shenanigans we're back on traditional podcast duty talking the weeks biggest news including Nintendo returning with a shiny new Direct showcase (though no mention of their new console is confirmed). What on earth have they got up their sleeve to show us? We're a little dumbfounded so it's gonna be a hugely interesting show.Elsewhere Embracer have closed Alone in the Dark remake studio Pieces Interactive after 'disappointing sales'. Are games really selling poorly or are expectations too high? Finally we talk Sea of Thieves and how it's ruling the PlayStation seas in the US and Europe. In Game of the Week Kat has been checking out the PlayStation edition of Sea of Thieves and it may have turned into a slight obsession. Josh has been finally playing the absolute banger that is Persona 3 Reload, Miles has smashed out the very 'Miles' game V Rising. whilst Rossko has been checking out some Steam Next Fest demos such as The Alters, Parcel Corps and well, Building Relationships. Yikes. And in recommendations Kat talks The Last Campfire, Josh recommends a documentary about real estate developer Robert Durst, whilst Miles recommends sea-faring horror Still Wakes the Deep.Hey if you like our podcast why not leave us a review?! You can do it on Apple where you can also spread the love and on Spotify with their star ratings. Everything helps and we'd really appreciate it. This is the fifth of short duration and quick to release News Flashes that we intend to share with you on the progress of various Sideways projects - the new book, the musical, the new movie, and all other Sideways related activities. This News Flash is focused on building on the exciting news that Rex is coming to New Zealand. In this episode, Rex and Youie chat through the itinerary and invite those living in Auckland, Gisborne, Napier and the Wairarapa to reach out to them and suggest people they should meet, places they should go during the mini 'roadtrip' that will start in Auckland on Thursday May 12, then go to Gisborne on Friday May 13, Saturday May 14, then Napier on Saturday May 14 and Sunday May 15. Then, it's off to Martinborough and the Wairarapa on Sunday May 15 ending up in Wellington on Sunday May 15 and Monday Tuesday 16. So, if you wish to meet Rex and buy him a drink or a coffee, then write to wine@158.co.nz and we'll see if he can catch up with you this time around or when he repeats the journey more slowly in July/August in his campervan. Also, a big call out for any book groups anywhere in the country who may wish to have Rex appear in person, please let us know. You're also invited to write to Rex on wine@158.co.nz and share with him some ideas that you may have as to what you'd like 'Miles' to do in the fourth book and hopefully, ultimately, the movie sequel!! The word of the podcast is antinomial. The most obscure one so far, we reckon. The Sideways wine collection (handpicked by Rex Pickett) is now on sale, so please head to https://www.blackmarket.co.nz/promo/sideways-wines-feature or www.158.co.nz and taste the movie! Have you got a question to ask Rex about wine, all things Sideways (the books, the movie, or the play)? Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast, Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: Paul Grabowsky. Paul Grabowsky is a pianist, composer, arranger, conductor – and is one of Australia's most distinguished artists. Born in Papua New Guinea, Paul was raised in Melbourne. During the late 70's he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theatre and cabaret projects. He lived and worked in Europe and the US from 1980-85, during which time he performed with many jazz luminaries including Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin. He returned to Australia in 1986 and established a reputation as one of Australia's leading jazz musicians with such bands as his own trio and sextet, the Wizards of Oz and as musical director for singer Vince Jones. He was musical director of Tonight Live with Steve Vizard (a nationally televised variety show) from 1990-1992. He was Commissioning Editor (Arts and Entertainment) for ABC Television 1995-98. He has written the scores for over twenty feature films in Australia, the UK and US including ‘Innocence' (Paul Cox), ‘Last Orders', ‘The Eye of the Storm', ‘Words and Pictures'(Fred Schepisi) and ‘Shiner' (John Irvin). His television credits include the series ‘Phoenix' and ‘Janus' and the Emmy-winning ‘Empire Falls'. His works for the theatre include four operas and various multimedia works. His most recent opera, created for soprano Emma Matthews, ‘The Space Between', with libretto by Steve Vizard, premiered at Arts Centre Melbourne in September 2018. He is the Founding Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra, which he led from 1994-2013. He has won seven ARIA awards (most recently in 2019 for his recording ‘Tryst' with singer Kate Ceberano)), two Helpmann awards, several APRA and Bell Awards and a Deadly award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the Year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007. He was the 2010 Australian National University H.C.Coombs Fellow. He was Artistic Director of the Queensland Music Festival from 2005-2007 and was Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts for 2010 and 2012. He is currently a Professor at Monash University, and director of the Monash University Academy of Performing Arts and the Monash Art Ensemble. In 2014 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to music and arts administration. In this episode, Paul explains his personal transcribing approach and shows how to profit from every transcription you make. He is also providing many examples of solos that have been significant to his musical growth. Among all the great things that Paul says, my favourites are: 'You won't ever sound like somebody else, because you are not that person', 'MIles can play one note and all of the sudden all the energy conveys there!' 'George Coleman is the Mozart of Hard Bop'. Artists mentioned in this episode: Gary Costello, Lennie Tristano, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Bud Powell, Fats Navarro, George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter. a.o. Unlike all of my previous guests, when Miles' mom, Kate, first contacted me in January of this year, her sweet, almost 1 year old son, was still alive. They had just taken Miles home to die after learning that his cancer had spread to the point where treatment could no longer be effective. Kate and her husband were grasping at anything, trying to prepare themselves for his death, perhaps trying to limit some of the pain that they knew would be coming. Kate knew, even then in January, that she would want to share Miles' story with others. She just didn't know when that would be and what exactly that story would be like. During those days and weeks at home, Kate and her husband, along with both sets of grandparents, sang to Miles, played with Miles and even celebrated his 1st birthday. They tried to get ready as well for the day they knew was right around the corner. It turns out though, as much as you'd like to, you can't truly prepare for the death of your child. You can't prepare yourself for how quiet the house suddenly becomes. You can't prepare yourself for the fact that after weeks and months of your life revolving around that care of your child, it is suddenly over. There is nothing left to do, nothing left to prepare for. Life is now just the 'after' - that moment where your child, and in Kate's case, their only child, is gone. Today, only months after Miles' death, Kate is ready to share Miles with the world, on this podcast, as well as on her blog, thisgrievingmama.ca. The wound is certainly still fresh and raw. Some days, in fact, she wonders if the whole thing was even real. Did she really even have a baby? Did that year where Miles was alive even exist? Miles was born shortly before the COVID pandemic began. His life ended before the pandemic did. It's hard to even imagine that an entire life was lived during the time the world shut down, but for Miles and his little family, that is exactly what happened.

Miles' Stuffy Nose by Janice Robinson-Celeste Read with Carylee brings the love of literature to children and gives a peek behind-the-scenes by evoking the joy of reading, helping children interact with authors, and displaying the hidden talent of these authors who may be living in your community. In this episode, we're going to read Miles' Stuffy Nose, written by Janice Robinson-Celeste.  Have you ever tried to teach a toddler to blow their nose? Miles' Stuffy Nose helps toddlers learn to do just that! Miles is a toddler who doesn't know how to blow his nose. He seeks advice from his family members. One person says to blow like an elephant's trunk, another tells him to pretend to be a dragon blowing fire through his nose, and yet another family member tells him to pretend to be a whale blowing through its blowhole. He continues to get advice while using his imagination to be all of the things his family suggests until finally, he succeeds with the help of his sister. Janice Robinson-Celeste is the Founder and Publisher of Successful Black Parenting magazine, the first national print publication for Black parents. As a former teacher from early childhood to higher education, an author of two parenting books, including "Making A Supermodel, "Pride and Joy: African American Baby Celebrations" with Simon & Schuster publishing, and is a contributing writer for Huffington Post. On n'a rien d'exceptionnel hormis notre sourire.... I recently watched the Miles Davis documentary put together by PBS and available on netflix, among other sources. It re-ignited my life-long hero worship of Miles, reminded me why I chose to learn the trumpet as a kid, reminded me how much of an influence he has been on the core values of artistic expression I still aspire to in my own very small way. Although it was the In A Silent Way/Bitches Brew era Miles that forever changed the way I think about music when I was a teen, in my mid-life it has been his late-period, final burst of creative energy which fascinates me. One reason I keep coming back to Miles' late 80s energy is the outfits. The outfits are amazing. Another reason is that he seemed more open to talking about his process, somehow more humble and open while shrouded in garish 80s plumage. But underneath, above, around and beyond all of these things is the music - a fascinating approach to the modern synthesized sounds of the times, It might be so much projection onto the past, but he seemed unafraid to embrace the strange near-tepid mauve MIDI tones of the day and still come up with something subtle, elusive and sublime. And his paintings... reflecting a sort of afro-funk post modernism and a sense of a return to a willfully playful naïveté . Under all of the pressure to live up to the caricature of the intense, dangerous and adventurous auteur... humbled by health problems..bursting out of a depression that lasted years....he becomes playfully funky, bemused and inspired by his new context. Its an inspiring display of renewal and a return to the joy of growth into the unknown. The music I made for this episode today probably isn't directly related to Miles Davis' 80s period or, more specifically the 15 minute version of Human Nature live in Paris that I have watched a million times over the last couple of years, nor would I ever claim to even attempt to reach anywhere near his heights of genius... regardless, I hope you enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adamforkner/support

On our 100th episode of Talking Space, we invite on a very special guest, and the only guest to date to appear on the show 3 times, the one and only Miles O'Brien. We begin with the recent Mars 500 mission, in which astronauts spent over 500 days simulating a trip to Mars. We ask him if this is a valuable tool and discuss actually getting to Mars in the future. After the successful launch of the Soyuz on November 6th, 2011 at 11:14pm EST carrying 3 astronauts to the International Space Station, we talk about the era of Soyuz and what this means for the United States and talk about where we'll go in the future. We move on to the failed Phobos-Grunt mission launched by Russia and discuss that as well as its future as space debris and if Earthlings need to break out their crash helmets. We then talk about Miles' trip to earthquake-ravaged Japan and takes a look at how it is now for PBS.
