"I'm addicted to sugar." "Once I start, I can't stop." If you've ever said something like this, you're not exaggerating, and you're not alone. In this episode, Dr. Lisa Oldson breaks down the real science behind food addiction: why it mirrors substance use disorders, why it's still missing from the DSM-5, and what the Yale Food Addiction Scale tells us. She covers the latest research connecting ultra-processed foods, brain reward pathways, and even GLP-1 medications, then walks through what evidence-based treatment looks like, from cognitive behavioral therapy to harm-reduction approaches. If you've ever wondered whether your relationship with certain foods is more than a willpower problem, this episode gives you the science, the tools, and a next best action to start with. Thanks for listening! Let's chat food marketing and protein craziness! In this episode, I explain why you need to take a step back and pick and choose your focus around protein foods and why going back to basics and simplicity may be just want the Dietitian ordered. You're exercising more, fasting more, changing what you eat, and trying everything you know to support your weight, and yet the scale still doesn't seem to move.In this solo episode, Dr. Mindy breaks down five foundational habits she wants you to look at before assuming your body simply isn't responding. She explores how fibre-rich foods can support satiety and your gut microbiome, why walking after meals can benefit blood sugar, how meal timing interacts with your circadian rhythm, and why sleep and consistency deserve a much bigger place in the weight-loss conversation. She also explores GLP-1, food noise, nervous system state, and what research tells us about maintaining weight loss after stopping GLP-1 medications. The takeaway is refreshingly practical: instead of chasing another complicated strategy, start by looking at the everyday rhythms you can actually repeat.Resources MentionedFREE Nervous System QuestionnaireTime & Light: Missing Pieces of a Healthy Lifestyle with Dr. Satchin PandaThe Cancer Conversation Women Aren't Having Yet with Dr. Leigh Erin ConnealyReset AcademyEat Like a GirlAge Like a GirlFor more resources related to today's episode, visit the podcast episode page: drmindypelz.com/ep368Connect with Dr. Mindy:Join Reset AcademyWatch the episodes on YouTubeFollow Dr. Mindy on InstagramSubscribe to Dr. Mindy's newsletterDisclaimer: This podcast is intended for educational and informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. If you've ever stood in the back row of a family photo, worn the same "safe" outfit to hide your body, or offered to be the photographer just so you don't have to be in the picture, this episode is for you. Lisa Oldson, MD breaks down a well documented psychology finding called the spotlight effect, research showing we all dramatically overestimate how closely other people are watching and judging us. She also digs into internalized weight stigma, and why you can know, intellectually, that the people around you aren't judging your weight, while still feeling shame show up in your body anyway. Using a patient's story that many women will recognize in themselves, this episode makes the case that weight loss isn't a requirement for being loved, seen, or valued by the people already in your life. Non-scale victories prove your healthy habits are working, even when the number on the scale refuses to move. In this episode, Lisa Oldson, MD explains why the scale is almost always the last thing to change, not the first, and why relying on it alone can make you feel like you're failing even when you're succeeding. Drawing on research from Karl Weick on small wins and Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer's work on The Progress Principle, plus a real client's list of tracked non-scale victories, Dr. Oldson shows why celebrating small, visible wins is essential to weight loss motivation and long-term success. The episode also introduces glimmer notes, a practice for capturing and holding onto the kind things people say to you. Backed by research on negativity bias and the Gottmans' 5:1 ratio findings from marriage research, this segment explains why we're wired to forget compliments and remember criticism, and what to do about it. Listeners leave with two concrete practices, a non-scale victory list and a glimmer list, to help build weight loss motivation and confidence that doesn't depend on the number on the scale. Thanks for listening! Not all weight loss medications are created equal, and picking the right one isn't as simple as choosing whatever's trending. In this episode, Lisa Oldson, MD walks through the framework she uses in her practice to decide which weight loss medication is right for each patient. She starts with other health conditions like sleep apnea, heart disease, diabetes, migraines, and fatty liver disease, then moves through safety considerations, cost, and how much weight loss someone actually needs. Whether someone prefers a shot or a pill is always a consideration. Using a real patient case, Dr. Lisa breaks down how GLP-1 medications like Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide), and other meds (like Qsymia and Foundayo) get matched to the right person. She also explains why medication for excess weight is legitimate, evidence-based chronic disease treatment, and not "cheating." This medication episode wouldn't be complete without an update on retatrutide, the "Triple G," next-generation medication making headlines with over 28% weight loss in recent trials.Grab the free worksheet that goes with this episode: https://www.smartweightlosscoaching.com/smart-weight-loss-coaching-podcast-worksheet-170Thanks for listening! Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Blaming hormones is comforting because it gives us a villain and a shortcut. We go the other direction and build the real foundation: calories in versus calories out, plus the three forces that quietly drive the whole system, stress, sleep, and daily movement. From cortisol to insulin to thyroid hormones, we explain what these signals actually do, where they come from, and why “too much” and “too little” are both problems. No fear mongering, no miracle cocktails, just physiology you can use.We also unpack how nutrition misinformation spreads. “Sugar is bad” sells, “insulin is the bad guy” sells, and “fix your adrenal fatigue” sells, but simplification is not the same as truth. We talk about why sugar feels addictive in combination foods, how cortisol can be anti-inflammatory, why insulin is essential, and what to do in real-world scenarios like low blood sugar. Then we connect appetite hormones like leptin and ghrelin to sleep loss, chronic dieting, and the difference between psychological hunger and actual physiological hunger. Finally, we zoom out to the big picture: life stages. As we move from school to work to family life, NEAT drops, stress rises, sleep gets crushed, alcohol and caffeine creep in, and processed convenience foods become the default. That shift looks like “a slow metabolism,” but it is usually a predictable pattern we can measure and change. We share the coaching tools we rely on, sleep logs, stress questionnaires, measured food tracking, and meal photos, so progress is based on awareness, not guesses. If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a friend who keeps saying “it's my hormones,” and leave a review with the biggest myth you want us to tackle next.Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer? If you have spent any decent time trying to work on your health, nutrition, and fitness, you would have been likely led to believe that those with the strongest willpowers are those that succeed. And that without sheer, unrivaled willpower, you don't stand a chance, right? What if I told you it's not quite that black and white…that it's not that simple. That it's more complex than that and that quite simply, willpower is not enough. In this episode, I explain why willpower is a poor tool to leverage your success on and why so many have got it wrong about willpower and “motivation” when it comes to ultimate, sustainable longer term nutrition success. Do you experience or used to experience food-related guilt? If so, this is common and you are not alone. However, sometimes we think we need to guilt our way to success or taking action but this is actually a poor approach for the vast majority of us.We need to start looking at guilt as a human, in ways inevitable but negative outcome - and work on managing it better. Because guilt is not a good tactic…In this episode, I explain the guilt equation in nutrition and why it is not ideal and how to go about managing setbacks and guilt in a more healthy, productive way to pushes you forward rather than pulls you back.DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is for guidance only and is not individualised advice for you! Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!A single “cheat meal” can quietly erase a full week of progress and it usually happens in plain sight. We start with a deceptively simple question: how many calories are really in a burger with bacon and sauce, a loaded baked potato, and a big beer? Then we unpack why traditional food logs often fail, why photo tracking changes everything, and how coaches can spot the difference between honest effort and inaccurate reporting without turning nutrition into a guilt trip. From there, we react to a viral influencer claim that you should not give weight loss advice unless you've been over 200 pounds and lost it yourself, plus the idea that fat loss is “99% mental.” We challenge the gatekeeping, separate lived experience from true expertise, and explain why evidence-based coaching still has to respect the first law of thermodynamics. Mindset matters because it drives adherence, but it cannot outrun energy balance, especially when plans are unsustainable, protein is too low, sleep is wrecked, hunger is high, and the environment is stacked against consistency. We also get practical about what responsible nutrition coaching looks like: understanding scope of practice, building a referral team (registered dietitian, psychologist, physical therapist), and knowing when a client's situation requires more than macros and motivation. If you care about fat loss coaching, personal trainer development, nutrition education, and cutting through social media noise with real strategy, this one will sharpen your lens fast. If you've ever thought "I just need more motivation" or "I need more willpower," this episode is for you. The truth is, motivation is unreliable, willpower is a limited resource that runs out by the end of the day, and neither one is the foundation of lasting healthy habits. In this episode, Dr. Lisa Oldson breaks down the psychology and neuroscience of behavior change, including why action creates motivation (not the other way around), how your brain builds habits automatically through repetition, and four research-backed strategies for exercising, eating better, and sleeping more, even when you don't feel like it. You'll also hear about behavioral scientist Angela Duckworth's research on why the most successful people don't rely on willpower at all, and what they do instead. Thanks for listening! If you've ever ground away on a treadmill and wondered why the scale won't budge, this episode is for you. Lisa Oldson, MD breaks down one of the most persistent myths in weight loss culture: that exercise is the key to getting thinner. Decades of research say otherwise, and understanding why is one of the most liberating things you can do for your relationship with movement. In this episode you'll learn why exercise triggers metabolic compensation (your body is smarter than any fitness tracker), what Herman Pontzer's landmark research on the Hadza people of Tanzania revealed about calorie burn and physical activity, and why even marathon training rarely produces significant weight loss. You'll also learn why exercise IS one of the most powerful predictors of long-term weight maintenance once the weight is lost, and why that distinction matters enormously.Dr. Lisa also covers the surprisingly robust evidence linking regular movement to depression, anxiety, and stress relief. This includes research showing that exercise can be as effective as antidepressants and therapy for some people. She also walks through the behavioral science of actually building a habit that sticks, covering the Stages of Change, Self-Determination Theory, identity-based habits, and why motivation is the wrong thing to chase. Thanks for listening! So we know we need a calorie deficit to lose weight. We also know that you can make any food fit and still lose weight if the calories are correctly controlled. But should you? Just because you can do?That is the question not many ask and one that provides an additional layer of context to a commonly overly simplified area of nutrition. In this episode, I explain the nuance of flexible dieting and making any foods fit, with a consideration for the bigger nutrition picture. Could eating the same foods more often actually help you lose more weight? In this episode, Lisa Oldson, MD digs into the surprising science behind dietary simplicity, and why reducing the variety of what you eat may be one of the most underrated weight loss strategies out there.Dr. Lisa covers a brand-new 2026 study from the American Psychological Association showing that people who ate repetitive meals lost significantly more weight than those who constantly varied their food choices. She also explains the biology of sensory-specific satiety, the built-in appetite mechanism that food companies exploit to keep you eating more, and shares data from the National Weight Control Registry on how the most successful long-term weight losers actually eat.Plus: a counterintuitive finding about weekend food tracking that may completely change how you approach your weekend meals. You'll walk away with 5 practical tips for simplifying your meals, building a personal dinner rotation, and using food routines to reduce decision fatigue, so healthy eating starts to feel automatic instead of exhausting. Thanks for listening! You should be drinking hot water. You should be drinking cool water. You shouldn't be drinking this water, why are you drinking that water? So much confusion and overthinking on the most seemingly simple part of nutrition…Hydration!More specifically, there has been this recent push for drinking of hot water (or warm water really), in the mornings to help aid in some health benefits. But how true is this? Is it really better than cold water drinking? In this episode, I explain the basics around what the science really says (or doesn't say) about the question of hot water vs cold water for health, digestion, and results. What if the reason you keep falling off track has nothing to do with willpower, discipline, or the right diet plan, and everything to do with how you see yourself? In this episode, Lisa Oldson, MD draws on James Clear's Atomic Habits, Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck's research on the growth mindset, and Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer's Progress Principle to make the case for identity-based change. The goal isn't to lose weight. The goal is to become someone who prioritizes her health, because it turns out that shift changes everything. You'll learn why outcome-based goals eventually run out of fuel, how every small healthy choice is quietly building (or undermining) your self-image, and why becoming a healthy person absolutely does not require being a perfect one.Plus: a simple NBA (Next Best Action) to try today that takes about 30 seconds and might stick with you for years. Importantly, she'll tell you about the most common side effects you need to know about before you ask your doctor about this or other weight loss meds. And finally, a quick update on the oral Wegovy pill, the first-ever GLP-1 medication approved for weight loss that doesn't require an injection.Dr. Oldson covers the efficacy, pricing, availability, and side effects for all three options, and reminds us that excess weight is a chronic medical condition deserving of evidence-based medical treatment, not judgment.Whether you're currently on a weight loss medication, considering one, or just want to stay informed (because EVERYONE is talking about this!), this episode gives you everything you need for a smarter conversation with your doctor and to help you decide if one of these medications might make sense for you. Drawing on the work of Roy Baumeister (whose groundbreaking "ego depletion" research explains that late-night refrigerator raid) and Stanford health psychologist Kelly McGonigal, Dr. Oldson shares surprisingly simple "willpower workouts" you can start today; no gym required. You'll also discover why the ultimate goal isn't to have more willpower, it's to need less of it, by using it strategically upfront to build habits that eventually run on autopilot. Are you setting weight loss goals that are quietly working against you? In this episode, Dr. Lisa Oldson reveals why fixating on a number on the scale is one of the most common reasons people quit before they ever see real results, and she'll tell you what to do instead.Drawing on over a decade of experience as a weight loss physician, Dr. Oldson breaks down the psychology of goal-setting, including groundbreaking research from NYU psychologist Dr. Gabriele Oettingen, whose studies show that dreaming about your goal weight may actually make you less likely to reach it. She also shares a simple but powerful framework called WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan), that you can use today to turn vague intentions into real behavioral change. In this episode, you'll learn:Why outcome-based goals (like a number on the scale) set you up for frustration and burnoutHow process-based goals lead to more weight loss, and why the research backs this upThe difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and why it matters for long-term successHow to use the WOOP method to build a goal with staying powerWhat your "Next Best Action" is, and how to identify yours todayWhether you've been chasing the same number on the scale for years, or you're just getting started on your weight loss journey, this episode will completely shift how you think about goals, and give you a practical, compassionate path forward to weight loss and better health. Why do you order pizza, pour a glass of wine, or reach for chocolate or chips when you're not actually hungry? It may not be about willpower. Is low-carb better than low-fat? Should you be eating 120 grams of protein a day? The internet says yes, but the science says it's not that simple. In this episode, Dr. Lisa Oldson digs into Dr. Kevin Hall's groundbreaking NIH research to explain why your macro ratio matters far less than you think. The real key to weight loss? The quality of the food on your plate; not the ratio of macros in it. Plus, Dr. Lisa shares why she's never counted her own macros, what to know if you're on a GLP-1 medication, and how to find your NBA, your next best action, without overhauling your entire life. Thanks for listening!
