We at The Wolf are excited to present our 250th episode of UAWIL and want to take a moment to thank all our loyal listeners & social media followers. Building this show and the community of fellow rock fans has been such a fun and sometimes magical adventure around the world these past 5 years. We want to express our sincere thanks for coming on the journey with us. Also, we like to do big guests on our 50th shows - Ryan Condal EP of House of the Dragon Ep 50, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets live (after welcoming Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt on earlier to promote the show) Ep 100, Steve Kilbey of The Church Ep 150 and Steve Howe of Yes Ep 200. And we are proud to welcome one of rock music's most celebrated and contracted cover artists, Hugh Syme. Hugh is best known for his work with Rush over 50 years as their first collaboration, Caress of Steel, is 50 this year. We learned from Hugh first hand how his original piece of art was given the sepia tone at print which we all know and the songs which inspired the front and back covers. We hear about working with Neil Peart, Bob Ezrin, David Coverdale, Jimmy Page and the many models he immortalized with iconic album covers. Hugh is also an accomplished musician in his own right and talks about recording with Rush, working with former guest of UAWIL Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds and jamming with Aerosmith. We found Hugh to be soft spoken yet wryly funny as he related tales of living in London as a teenager, working as a musician in Toronto, and the 80s and 90s living in LA when it was the heart of the music business. And for you Rush fans, listen until the end as he announces he just submitted his artwork for an upcoming Rush anniversary reissue of one of our favorite 1980's Rush records. We had a delightful conversation with Hugh and we hope you enjoy it. Thanks again for all the support these 250 episodes - it means the world to us. Can we make it to 1,000??? Autor: Gilbert Keith Chesterton Vorlage: Der Mann, der Donnerstag war (Roman, englisch) Besetzung: René Deltgen (Gabriel Syme), Rudolf Therkatz (Gregory), Peter Esser (Präsident/Sonntag), Kaspar Brüninghaus (Sekretär/Montag), Werner Hessenland (Marquis de St. Eustache), Hermann Pfeiffer (Professor de Worms/Freitag), Gerhard Geisler (Dr. Bull/Samstag), Heinrich Fürst (Der Vorsitzende), Karl Maria Schley, Rudolf Böhme, Frank Barufski, Herbert Kappen Bearbeitung: Gisela Prugel Komposition: Hans Jönsson Regie: Wilhelm Semmelroth Redaktion: Thilo Guschas Produktion: Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk 1950

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Sometime in the 800s, an anonymous monk in the abbey of Fulda–now in modern Germany–copied out a Latin history in one of the great inventions of the age, the handwriting known as Carolingian miniscule, which is more or less they system that we use today to print the English alphabet. Thanks to that monk, today we have the first part of the Annals of P. Cornelius Tacitus, arguably the greatest surviving history of imperial Rome. But who was Tacitus? Why is he important? How could such an opinionated historian proclaim that he was writing without “anger and partiality”? Was he a champion of Roman liberty, or simply a grumpy aristocrat? With me to discuss Tacitus is Dr. Eric Adler, Professor and Chair of Classics at the University of Maryland. His scholarly interests include Roman historiography, Latin prose, the history of classical scholarship, and the history of the humanities. This is his second time on the podcast. His last appearance was in Episode 195, which dropped on January 20, 2021, in which we discussed his then third book, The Battle for the Classics: How a Nineteenth-Century Debate Can Save the Humanities Today.   For Further Investigation Eric Adler recommends "some scholarship" on Tacitus's Agricola: Clarke, Katherine. 2001. “An Island Nation: Re-Reading Tacitus' Agricola.” Journal of Roman Studies 91: 94-112. Liebeschuetz, W. 1966. “The Theme of Liberty in the Agricola of Tacitus.” Classical Quarterly n.s. 16.1: 126-139.

“It's my mum's favourite book that I wrote!” Benjamin Markovits is here to talk about his new and twelfth novel, THE REST OF OUR LIVES, published by Faber and Faber. Tom Layward has made a pact with himself. After his daughter moves out of college, he's moving out too. His wife had an affair, and he feels like he owes himself a road trip across America. He takes  in the sights, sounds and basketball games of the American heartland and beyond. But he's deferring some health issues and it seems like it's only a matter of time before his body asks him to stop and slow down, some of which was inspired by Ben's own experiences.   Ben's novel, You Don't Have to Live Like This, won the James Tait Black Prize for fiction. He was a Granta Best of Young British Novelists. His writing has featured prolifically in mainstream publications.  We discuss: Are families about power dynamics? Hear about Ben and I reflecting on our family life Is Steph Curry Benjamin's new obsession instead of Michael Jordan? Crew, we love us some Becca Syme over here. We will listen to any podcast she's on, sometimes twice. We (okay, me) watch her YouTube channel while we work out. We read her email newsletter religiously. Because she gets writers and writers. She gets that while we may all be trying to do what looks like the same thing, we all do that thing differently and what works for one of us doesn't work for all of us. So obviously we were super-excited to get to talk to her, and we're delighted to re-share this very very inspirational interview with you as we head to the end of 2023.Who wouldn't want to write better and faster? I can't even imagine. Our guest this week is Becca Syme, creator of the Better Faster Academy, author of Dear Writer You Need to Quit as well as other books in the Quit series and the author of the MatchBaker series of cozy mysteries (with such glorious titles as “Vangie Vale and the Murdered Macaron”). I'm sitting with my new Muse Machine, a deck of 150 open-ended, creative prompt cards designed to spark inspiration across various tasks, from writing to painting from one of my very favorite idea-sparkers and kick-in-the-pantsers, Gretchen Rubin. I don't like writing prompts (because I hate the idea of intentionally writing stuff I know I won't use) but these are different. They're meant to get you thinking in a different way, which means you might get “take a nap” or “can it be bigger on the inside than it is on the outside?” Whatever it is will set your mind spinning. MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin in discussing an early English adaption of George Orwell's ground-breaking, genre-defining, and highly-influential novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. In this semi-live BBC rendition, one whose controversy is as historic as it is ironic, Kathryn and Melvin discuss not only the impact of this adaption but also the debilitating hopelessness and powerful insight that only Nineteen Eighty-Four can offer.Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 16-minutes of Kathryn playing "Would You Rather" except, in the theme of 1984, whatever option Kathryn chooses for herself means the opposite happens to Melvin! Hilarity ensures! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)This version of Nineteen Eighty-Four is a combination of pre-recorded and live-stage performances streamed to its original audience, and thus includes some interesting quirks that Melvin finds endearing and fascinating.Kathryn begins by explaining the complicated history behind this particular adaption of Nineteen Eighty-Four, including the controversy surrounding its initial screening. For insight (and giggles!), Kathryn reads a collection of quotes from reviews criticizing the content and tone of this adaption of Nineteen Eighty-Four upon its release.Melvin briefly compares this adaption of Nineteen Eighty-Four with the later released Michael Radford version, stating his preferences, and what works so well in this adaption.People were so disgusted with the tone and content of Nineteen Eighty-Four that cast and crew members had even received bomb threats.Pondering the myth of the Mickey Snow-Globe. Or, as it's known; Snow-Globe Gate.Discussing the iconography of the Snow-Globe.Discussing the monologue on language destruction and thought control delivered by Syme in the film (which is an extra fictional essay in the book).Discussing the oppression of power and Big Brother.Recommendations:Slapstick, or Lonesome No More! by Kurt Vonnegut (1999) (Book)Papers, Please (2013) (Video Game) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Hey Podulters! Welcome to Adulting 2.0: The Timelines. This week I'm talking to Shelley Syme. Shelley's timeline completely shifted when at the age of 29 she found a lump under her armpit and was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes as well, which led her to make the brave decision to have a mastectomy. We connected online after Shelley wrote a gorgeous poem about her feelings towards her breasts on a post I did for Breast Cancer Awareness month. We talk about finding that life changing lump, reframing your mentality around your body, dating, not wanting children and her love of snooker. I hope you enjoy, and as always please do rate, review and subscribe. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
