After Errementari, we travel back to España with an interesting twist on the “whodunnit!” This week’s film explores some cool themes centered around blindness: what’s seen, what’s unseen, and the tensions therein. Though even with one of Tim’s new favorite body horror moments, Julia’s Eyes floundered in the overall execution, earning a “stream” from Tim and an “avoid” from Ryan. Another classic episode from the test podcasts from before we were banned on youtube! Julia's Eyes v The Sweeney on the roulette, we chat Quentin Tarantino films and our feelings on how studios handle releasing stuff to home video.
This week Mark and Shavonna start by quickly talking the Fx television remake of The Exorcist and touch on Taboo and the frequency of the the n-word being used in westerns shootouts. Then move on to talk our main movie Julia's Eyes (Los Ojos de Julia) 2010 directed by Guillem Morales.
It's episode 43! The only thing worse than going blind is going blind while being stalked by a murderer... Julia's Eyes (2010) tells the story of Julia, a woman with a degenerative eye disease. After her twin sister is murdered, Julia begins a hunt for the killer, but she's in a race against time as her vision is slowly growing weaker... We talk about appropriate footwear for recovering from eye surgery; some top tips for pretending your eyes don't work; and a gripping appraisal of bathroom lighting safety. All of which leads to one big question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure... When I look into your eyes, I see the universe! Another classic film solved by the best movie podcast in the world.
Past guest and drummer of your dreams Eva Friedman rejoins the podcast to discuss Room, the 2015 drama that turned real-life wannabe pop star, Scott Pilgrim fictional pop star, and all around A+ person Brie Larson into an Oscar winner. We discuss the portrayal of trauma and victims in media, the adaptation of source material for film, and the movie's very informative trailer. We also delve into queer entertainment, the del Toroverse, and pizza snobbery. Dominoes won't be sponsoring us anytime soon. 0:37 Intro 2:52 Recently Watched + Eva has a lot of feelings about the Electra Woman and Dyna Girl trailer and shares the delight of D.E.B.S. + Kayla has to share some new information - for her - about Battlestar Galactica before diving into our early Halloween del Toroverse celebration (The Orphanage, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Julia's Eyes). + Tyler has nothing but praise for Brick, #JGL, and the workaday efficiency of Spotlight. 25:08 Room Discussion 1:30:45 Recommendations, trivia, stat of the week, outro + bloope
When the Nighthawks Podcast first started off, there were two things the guys wanted to do: 1.) To aid in the accessibility of film as an art form. 2.) To shine a light on films that people may have missed. The meat and potatoes of this episode comes solidly from these goals. In this episode Matt and Trevor discuss two films, with strong female protagonists, where the main characters have to overcome a deprivation of their senses. These are films that not only share a theme of sensory deprivation, not only are they movies with strong female leads, they're also movies that may have escaped the attention of the movie-going public at large. First up the horror-action home-invasion thriller HUSH. Directed/co-written by OCULUS helmer Mike Flanagan, and co-written/starring Kate Siegel, HUSH follows a deaf mute author living on her own in rural Alabama, as she is beset upon by a particularly sardonic killer. Hot off the griddle at SXSW 2016, the film was picked up by NETFLIX and is currently streaming on that service. Having eschewed a wide national theatrical release, the boys discuss why an expedient home release may have been a good move in this case. Second course is the Spanish-Language mystery thriller JULIA'S EYES. Directed by Guillem Morales and produced by Guillermo del Toro, the film follows a woman racing the clock set by her own deteriorating vision, to try and answer questions left in the wake of her sister's alleged suicide. A creepy and cerebral whodunnit that utilizes an interesting device in depicting blindness on screen. JULIA'S EYES is available on several pay-per-view streaming sites including Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes for about $3.00. It is also available through the SHUDDER streaming service as part of their library.
