A new horror film entitled Malignant dropped into theaters and on HBO Max recently. The Lodgecast was reluctant to review it after seeing the trailer, but a few Lodgers tipped us off that it was worth watching. Caution Lodgecast listeners! This movie has a twist and we spoil it big time in this Hawt Take. The director is James Wan, who created the Saw, Insidious, and Conjuring franchises. Is Malignant bloody brilliant enough to launch its own horror franchise? We'll let you know in this brisk Hawt Take! The movie stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, and Jacqueline McKenzie.
I've always been fascinated by the oddities in life. Heck, it's probably why my book has “weird” in the title—life's just a bit more fun when there's some strangeness involved. That's probably why I'm so excited to chat with Marc Hartzman, a person ABCNews.com called “one of America's leading connoisseurs of the bizarre.” Marc has deeply researched all kinds of entertaining topics, from the disembodied head of Oliver Cromwell to the tallest folks to ever live. He's focusing on the supernatural in his latest book: Chasing Ghosts: A Tour of Our Fascination with Spirits and the Supernatural. You'll learn all about paranormal investigators like Ed and Lorraine Warren (who inspired The Conjuring franchise), famous ghosts like the Bell Witch of Tennessee and the Greenbrier Ghost of West Virginia, haunted sites like the Stanley Hotel and the Winchester Mystery House, plus a whole lot of other spooky subjects. We've got plenty to talk about in this eerily enjoyable episode (look at that alliteration!) so grab a seat and some Halloween candy and dive in.
Seriah hosts Adam Sayne for a deep dive into the work of Ed and Lorraine Warren, their influence in pop culture, and their very interesting connections. Topics include the film "A Haunting in Connecticut", Snedeker family, paranormal reality TV, the book "In a Dark Place", Ray Garton, perception of demons everywhere, the Roman Catholic Church, Vatican II, the Tridentine (Latin) Mass, Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul XI, ecumenism, the Traditionalist Catholic movement, Malachi Martin, the Rite of Exorcism, the Protestant Reformation, translations of the Bible, Society of Saint Pius X, Marcel Lefebvre, the "Orthodox Roman Catholic Church", Robert McKenna, Francis E. Fenton, John Birch Society, anti-communism, Biblical examples of exorcism, Enfield Poltergeist, parapsychological research, Maurice Grosse, Guy Lyon Playfair, "Demons in Seattle" case, apports, Roland Doe, "Exorcism in St. Louis", William Peter Blatty, Spiritualism, Ouija boards, Dr. J.B. Rhine, Rhine Institute, "Exorcism of Emily Rose", "Exorcism of Anneliese Michel", temporal lobe epilepsy, Whitley Strieber, the film "The Exorcist", the "Conjuring" movies as propaganda, the apparitions and prophecies of Fatima, the concept of perfect possession, the book "Michelle Remembers", Satanic Panic, John Zaffis, "Paranormal State" and "Ghost Hunters" TV shows, Detective Ralph Sarchie, Sally Jessy Raphael, skeptic Joe Nickell, people claiming to be sexually assaulted by demons, Perron family haunting, Amityville, Amityville ghost boy photo, Smurl family haunting, book "American Exorcism" by Michael Cuneo, Father Robert McKenna and Ed Warren, and more. This is a fascinating conversation, packed with information! - Recap by Vincent Treewell Outro by Just a Memory "For the Love of Pity" Download

What's located on a sprawling estate in Rhode Island, up for sale right now, and was the site of one of the most famous Warren investigations? It's the Perron house! Also known as the Conjuring house, this property in Rhode Island is currently up for sale, so we thought we'd give you some of the background that's not in the movie.
It's been a long time since I last released anything but dammit, it feels great to be back. This episode, I'll be discussing all the "summer" movies I had the great pleasure of seeing this past year and what I'm looking forward to. Due to the length of this discussion, my previously planned back half of the episode got pushed and will be released next week as a bonus episode...or part two? That said, I'll just go ahead and consider this the season two premiere as I gear up for (hopefully) more episodes to be released in the future. Movies I'll be discussing in this episode include Shang-Chi, Black Widow, The Conjuring, Malignant, The Night House, Candy Man, In the Heights, Godzilla vs Kong and Mortal Kombat. *dj air horn* It's our 350th episode! We actually didn't realize until...well, right now. But that's okay, because we think it's a pretty good one. This episode represents our return to the Wan-iverse with James Wan's newest film, "Malignant." Special topics for your consideration include: some more life advice from your friends who know nothing-- including some on both hypnotherapy and falling down, a little bit of DMB talk (please don't come at us DMB fans, it's fine, we're sorry), Five Inch Nails, some real "Paranormal Activity"-level spooky kid stuff, and a slander being righted in the most delightful way (stick around to the end for that one). The Wan-iverse is vast and we've really disliked most of it. Find out more with Episode 81- "Saw," Episode 96- "The Conjuring," Episode 303- "Insidious" and Episode 333- "The Conjuring 2." I was also 90% sure we'd done "The Nun" but the records beg to differ and they are probably right, so. On this special episode I get to sit down with Andrea Perron, she is a famous author and is the eldest of 5 siblings. Have you heard of the film The Conjuring? If so that movie is based on the true story of the Perron Family. I had the pleasure to sit down with Andrea and discuss her experiences as a author, sibling of 5, her paranormal experiences and what it was like having a movie made. Ed & Lorraine Warren visited the home of the Perrons back in 1970's and they documented each of their findings. Welcome one and all to Creepy Cove Community Church, the only horror themed church on the planet (as far as we know). This is the FULL SERVICE...if you just want the 'sermon/ talk' then check out the SERMON ONLY version next to this one. Rupert Donk opens tonight's service with some words of extreme caution regarding the dangerous peak on which the church stands. Then we have a special impromptu guest called Ash Williams, who we saw running out of the forest, holding a chainsaw and a shotgun. What on earth could the young scamp have been up to? A party for the youth, we should imagine. Though one wonders if there might be a more sinister reason for the blood on his clothes and chin. Next, Annabelle, the little haunted doll, delivers our Bible Reading, then Peter hops up to the microphone to share some thoughts on 'Dealing with Rejection'.There's a vaguely 'Five Nights at Freddies' meditation after that and then a prayer. Until the service is closed with Ash himself, who offers to sing a smooth bossa nova called 'How Could I Have Known (A Love Song For Linda after I Chopped her Head Off by Ash from The Evil Dead). What a convoluted title, ey? Finally, Peter and Rupert talk about the humble Garibaldi biscuit brand...then it's the end of the service. Thanks for listening. This movie was pretty scary, and it's not the best in the Conjuring series but it definitely has some good moments. Annabelle has smeared lipstick (clean yourself up, gurl), the baby in this movie is way too chubby, books kill, that elevator scene is stressful and the girl that plays Mia (Annabelle Wallis) is super pretty. Annabelle is a Jedi and uses force pulls to kills her victims and we also wonder why Annabelle is so f***ing huge. In this LUSHIEST episode ever, we talk about libra season archetypes and misconceptions, Libra glamour & beauty rituals and the dark, seedling power of the new moon. We also chat about the dark academia aesthetic (who wants to solve a mystery with the help of an old book?), Libra poets, and get drunk as fuck on both red & white vino. There's also a little Cardi B, Rumi, & Cisneros. This is probably our drunkest episode ever, and the lush starts right off the bat. Lots of laughing, and tangents, and messiness. It went on way too long (not sorry) and it's very, very weird, but we promise it will be worth it. You are welcome. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/astrolushes/message

Anna is a big fan of Halloween decorations and this year her theme is spiders! But you won't believe what she plans on building to put on the top of her house! (:30) What if Facebook never came back? Facebook and Instagram were down for 6 hours yesterday and it made Anna and Raven wonder what the world would look like if it never returned! (3:37) If you're in a rush and switching lanes often that's one thing, but if your only goal is to prevent anyone from passing you ever, that's all I need to know about you! (7:01) How do you feel about mustaches? Some people find them creepy, but Raven is pretty sure that the contractor he hired uses his mustache as an intimidation technique! (10:55) Where do you stash your money? The Pandora Papers have revealed all the myriad places that the world's elite hide their money, but Raven has a hiding place with a surprisingly feminine touch… (18:42) Do you in a haunted house? The house that inspired the horror movie “The Conjuring” just sold, but one caller's real life experience with a demon on her baby monitor is even scarier! (29:38) Lots of people believe that no major decisions should be made during Mercury Retrograde and Kate is definitely one of them! But her husband Ben thinks that putting off the sale of their home based on astrology is going way too far! Whose side are you on? (40:33) Jennifer has got a shot at $300! All she has to do is beat Raven in pop culture trivia! (49:27)

Malignant is James Wan's latest horror creation. When the name 'Wan' pops up our mind goes to The Conjuring and we set the bar even higher than that for all of Wan's new projects. But if critics are to be believed, Malignant is nowhere near what we would expect. Some have even gone as far as saying that it is cancerous for Wan's career. But what is to be believed? That is what we're going to unravel in this episode when we deep dive into the film's various elements. This week we kick off the 2021 Spooky Season by digging into The Conjuring (2013). We unpack the film's approach to tension, ponder the trauma the Perron family endured, and continue the discourse surrounding the existence of ghosts. In this episode's B-side, we answer a patron's question surrounding the origins of the podcast, learn Paris was in Little Children (2006), and discover how Alexis keeps watch for ghosts in her home. This episode contains spoilers, beginning at 37:26.

We went and saw Malignant, and It had me all turned around. I didn't know if this movie was coming or going. Wan is an experienced filmmaker, but this film makes me wonder if he had brain trauma since Aquaman. (1:27) - Intro(5:51) - Trailer(8:42) - Synopsis(9:07) - Review(15:42) - Score(25:50) - Spoilers(1:02:17) - Make it Better(1:18:01) - Outro Malignant can be found in theaters now and streaming on HBO Max until Oct 10 @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. Synopsis Malignant is about an abused wife, Madison (Annabelle Wallis), who after her husband is murdered, begins to see a figure in the shadows and having visions of murders. She finds out that these murders are real and that she has been witnessing them in real time. As police investigate the crimes, they seem to be tied together and related somehow to Madison's past. https://youtu.be/Gczt0fhawDs Review of Malignant (2021) James Wan, the director of Malignant is an accomplished horror director. Say what you want about The Conjuring, Saw, and … Aquaman? The truth is he is a competent director that has made some very enjoyable and successful movies. So much so, that entire franchises have been launched from his films. So the question is. How did Malignant happen? Is this a joke? I can only assume that Wan intentionally made a bad movie, because otherwise, the only explanation is head trauma. There are times when it shines with pure stupid fun -- mainly the opening and ending scenes -- but the majority of the movie seems to have poor footing with its tone. I could see some of these terrible lines of dialogue and ridiculous plotting work in a committed exaggerated campy horror film, But foolishly, everyone is playing it subdued and straight. I sat there watching the film, bored for most of it, desperately wanting a Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead 2 type actor to bring some levity and self awareness. Nope, just performances of the caliber that you would see on your mom's favorite c-tier CBS crime procedural. The influences are many and varied. I'm reminded of most of Wans career with elements of The Conjuring and Saw apparent, but also campy horror classics like Re-Animator and Basket Case. However, instead of taking disparate ingredients and making an enjoyable stew, we are treated more to a bachelor's feast of unrelated stale cold leftovers eaten out of tupperware containers. The film could have gone a number of ways to explain what is happening to Madison. It could be a haunting, a possession, a serial killer, psychic powers, etc. What it ends up being, is so dumb that you almost want to stand up and clap. I wish I could like this movie more, but the story in the middle of the film, and the characters are so boring, The ridiculous parts that I did enjoy couldn't overcome them. Lol. Nothing Good Comes Of His Twisted Existence, Anyway. We Weren't Going To Cover It Until We Saw How Divided The Film Was Making Diehard Horror Movie Fans On The Internet.James Wan collaborated on the story with his wife Ingrid Bisou who also has a small role in the movie. The screenplay was written by Akela Cooper. Wan refers to the movie as a "genre blender" mixing in elements from science fiction and particularly 80s horror. Wan states the visual look was heavily inspired by giallo movies from Argento and Bava. Wan chose to do this instead of the third Conjuring movie because he wanted to get back to his roots with something grittier and not repeat himself too often. Spoiler Alert: in reality this could never happen as conjoined twins are always identical and it is impossible for conjoined twins to be male and female. As a result of the pandemic giving it a smaller release and possibly the weirdness of the movie in general, this will be Wan's second lowest box office earner behind Death Sentence only grossing $24 million worldwide as of today's date against a budget of $40 million which is pretty significant for an original horror movie not based on an IP.
