In this episode, Laura shares three haunting auditory experiences that have left her questioning the unseen forces around us. In 1991, while serving as a Mormon missionary in Puerto Rico, Laura and her companion were disturbed by the sound of a chair being dragged across the room. Later, as her mother battled cancer, Laura heard snoring and crochet needles clicking in her bedroom—sounds reminiscent of her mother. Finally, after watching The Conjuring 2, Laura was terrified by the sound of boxes being dragged in her attic and knocking in threes. Though she's never seen a ghost, these eerie encounters have shown her there's more to the world than meets the eye. The Conjuring movies depict a very different Ed and Lorraine Warren. While the movies make them both seem wholesome and sweet, the real life versions were much different. We also have some listener questions to get to, movies to review, and the usual goofy spooky stupidity you've come to expect from Scaredycast.
Send us a textThe conversation shifts to Marvel's surprising box office hit "Thunderbolts," which has topped charts for two consecutive weekends. We break down why this particular entry has connected with audiences when recent Marvel offerings have faltered – examining how its grounded approach, practical location shooting, and thoughtful mental health themes provide a refreshing alternative to CGI-heavy spectacles. Florence Pugh's star power and David Harbour's charismatic performance contribute to a film that feels contained yet consequential within the larger Marvel universe.Summer movie season approaches with promising titles, and we analyze recent trailers for Spike Lee's "High to Low," Celine Song's rom-com "The Materialist," the final "Conjuring" installment, and Zach Cregger's anticipated horror follow-up "Weapons." With Cannes Film Festival underway, we speculate about potential award contenders like Ari Aster's "Eddington" and Julia Ducournau's "Alpha," considering how the festival increasingly predicts Oscar success. Between passionate discussions of cinema, friendship, and even NBA playoff drama, this episode captures the joy of reconnecting as a team across distances while celebrating our enduring love of film.Send us your thoughts using the link in our show description, and follow us on Instagram and Letterboxd to join the conversation between episodes!Support the show

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! When Roger and Carolyn Perron moved their five daughters onto a sprawling 200‑acre Rhode Island farm in 1970, the previous owner offered only one piece of advice: “Leave the lights on at night.” What followed became one of the most chilling real‑life hauntings ever recorded—later inspiring the blockbuster film The Conjuring. For nearly ten years the Perrons shared their home with entities from every fold of time: mournful children, unseen hands, and the vengeful spirit the family came to call “Bathsheba.” Doors slammed, beds levitated, and history itself seemed to bleed through the walls. In this episode, Andrea Perron—eldest daughter and author of House of Darkness | House of Light—recounts the true events the movie only hinted at: the séances, the midnight battles for control of a mother's soul, and the moment they finally realized the dead were not leaving. Join us as we step inside the old Arnold Estate—lights on—and discover what it means to “live among the dead.” Become a Premium Supporter of The Grave Talks Through Apple Podcasts or Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/thegravetalks) There, you will get: Access to every episode of our show, AD-FREE! In 1981, a young man in Connecticut took the idea of the insanity plea to the next level. He claimed that he was innocent of the murder he'd committed – he'd only done it because he was possessed by a demon. While the previous two Conjuring films took the intrepid duo, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to haunted houses, this was a new kind of horror story for the pair. And while the film takes the demon plot and runs wild with it in the last half of the movie, the first half is loosely based on the real story of the first time that demonic possession was brought up as a defense in a U.S. court.Have a question or comment? In V.E. Shwab's bestselling novel, A Conjuring of Light, she wrote, "Kings need not raise their voices to be heard." But on this episode of Talk About It, Greg talks to a King who is being heard not by raising his voice, but by writing a book of his own! That book is called Be There When I Return, and it is out NOW everywhere books are sold. Michael King seemed to have everything going his way as a young bartender in 1980's Los Angeles until his friends began to notice a bizarre quirk in his behavior, but he is not aware of it happening. After the closest people in his life convince him to see a doctor, he is hit with the reality of an epilepsy diagnosis and drags through years of not being able to control his seizures. He ends up becoming a candidate for an experimental surgery, but his family doesn't know if he will remember them when he wakes up. We'll let Michael fill in the rest of this story, but you don't want to miss this episode! The Talk About It podcast is excited to be sponsored in part by Neurelis. Send us a textGather around, survivors, as we journey to the luminescent world of Pandora in James Cameron's groundbreaking sci-fi epic, Avatar. Our hosts dive into a passionate debate about whether this visually stunning film deserves its status as the highest-grossing movie ever or if it's simply "Pocahontas in space" with a fresh coat of CGI paint. The conversation takes fascinating turns as we explore how Jake Sully's Earth-learned survival instincts become dangerously "bass-ackwards" on an alien world. We're captivated by the scene where Neytiri shows Jake that extinguishing his fire actually reveals Pandora's natural bioluminescence—a perfect metaphor for the film's themes of letting go of old ways to truly see a new world. This clever reversal of traditional survival knowledge demonstrates why Avatar's worldbuilding remains unmatched even years after its release.Beyond the stunning visuals, we unpack the Na'vi's deep connection with their environment through neural links and hunting rituals, drawing parallels to indigenous Earth cultures and their respectful relationship with nature. The debate heats up around whether the film's familiar "colonizer versus native" narrative detracts from its achievements or makes it more accessible to global audiences. Meanwhile, technical discussions about CGI innovations, the uncanny valley, and how Avatar revolutionized motion capture demonstrate why this film changed cinema forever.Whether you're Team "Groundbreaking Masterpiece" or Team "Derivative Storytelling," our lively discussion offers fresh perspectives on this cultural phenomenon that continues to expand with ambitious sequels. Join us next time as we switch gears completely to explore The Conjuring 3—from Pandora's mystical connection to nature to supernatural horror here on Earth.

Send us a textLurking behind the veil of a seemingly ordinary ghost haunting lies something far more sinister in The Conjuring 2. We dive deep into the notorious Enfield Poltergeist case, where what appears to be the restless spirit of an elderly man reveals itself as something far more ancient and malevolent. The spiritual battle for survival takes center stage as we explore how names hold extraordinary power in confronting supernatural entities. Throughout history and across cultures, knowing something's true name has granted authority over it—a concept brilliantly depicted when Lorraine Warren finally discovers and confronts Valak. We catch all the subtle ways the filmmakers hid this demonic name throughout the movie—from children's letter blocks to bookshelves—creating a visual breadcrumb trail that viewers might miss on first watch. What truly sets this horror film apart is its exploration of psychological and spiritual isolation as a weapon. Demons strategically separate their victims, creating islands of vulnerability where doubt flourishes. As Ed Warren wisely observes, "The proper approach is to respond as a family." This profound insight applies beyond supernatural encounters to all challenging situations—facing adversity together provides strength that isolated individuals lack. The real-life Enfield case contained fascinating elements the movie only touched upon, including investigator Maurice Gross's personal connection to young Janet and how this affected his determination to uncover the truth. We examine how the film balanced Hollywood dramatization with the documented strange occurrences, offering a compelling glimpse into one of Britain's most thoroughly investigated paranormal cases.Whether you're a horror aficionado, paranormal enthusiast, or simply curious about surviving supernatural encounters, join us as we dissect how discernment, community support, and spiritual awareness might be your best defense against forces lurking beyond our understanding. What would you do if faced with an entity that knows your deepest fears and can manipulate your perception of reality? The answer might determine if you survive.
This is, of course, based on a true story. But how true is this story? Well, as you're just about to hear, NOT VERY. Truth, as they say, is often much stranger than fiction, but in some cases, you actually have to FIND the truth first. And when it comes to THE CONJURING – and with Ed and Lorraine Warren themselves – the truth is a very, very elusive thing.Have a question or comment? Before Hollywood brings this terrifying tale to the big screen, the Smurl family lived it. For over 15 years, they were tormented by a relentless, malevolent force that defied logic—and resisted exorcism. Shadow figures, levitation, attacks, and a darkness that followed them wherever they fled. In this episode, bestselling author Rebecca F. Pittman joins me to reveal the terrifying true events behind The Conjuring 4: Last Rites, drawn from her chilling new book, The History and Haunting of the Smurl Family Horror. This isn't just another ghost story. It's one of the most documented—and disturbing—paranormal cases in modern history. Long before ‘The Conjuring' franchise twisted Valak into a terrifying nun, this ancient demon haunted medieval grimoires as a sinister child atop a two-headed dragon—commanding serpents and leading an army of demons.IN THIS EPISODE: Although Valak is depicted in the films "The Nun" and in “The Conjuring 2” as a habit-wearing spirit, the real demon appears as a child riding a two-headed dragon — at least according to a 17th-century demon-hunting manual. (The Reality Behind The Demon, Valak) *** The Vatican is one of the most well-guarded areas in the world. But if rumors are to be believed, all that security isn't only to protect the pontiff… but some dark, disturbing secrets… and a machine that could change everything we know to be true. (The Vatican's Secret Machine) *** We'll look at that time a force field was accidentally created at a 3M plant. (3M's Accidental Force Field) *** In 1872 George Wheeler met and married May Tillson in Boston. He made a home for May and her younger sister Della, first in New York, then in California. Along the way, George fell in love with young Della and when she planned to marry someone else he was faced with a dilemma: he could not marry her himself and he could not bear to see her wed to another. The solution he chose pleased no one. (Thus She Passed Away) *** In the 1800s scientists and doctors needed cadavers to study human anatomy and practice their skills. To help accommodate the need, it was made legal to sell dead bodies. What could possibly go wrong? But of course that does not happen for most of us. In fact, there are probably more people going out in a blaze of stupidity!
