On the 13th episode of the Bois & Bar Talk podcast, the Drink of the Week is Flexural Strength. We have a Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy drink on our hands, not something that we've ever heard of. Flexural Strength is made by Reverie Brewing Company out of Newtown, CT. Flexural Strength is a slightly hoppy ale, medium in color, and has an ABV of 7.7%. We found this beer tucked way in the back of our beer stash. While we never heard of this brewery before and any beers that they have, this was surprised us. It's complemented by peanut butter with a malty taste to it. Overall, we embraced this delightful surprise with a positive review because it's repeatably drinkable. Well done! How We Rated Flexural Strength Rob's Rating: 7.7/10 Kev's Rating: 8.7/10 We kick off the show reminding everyone to check out the website Boisandbartalk.com to check out all of our episode posts. We do show notes and ratings for every beer and every episode. Here's how the episode goes down with Flexural Strength. Rating People We're baffled how humans rate each other whether it's based on looks or personality. We score humans on a scale of 1 through 10. Your whole existence! Rated with this bare bones scale. Would you want to know what other people are rating you if you could? Throwback Segment! We went back to old-school "Would You Rather?" questions. It's been a while since we did this. Would you rather not eat fruit again? Or would you rather not eat meat ever again? Would you rather give up Chinese food? Or would you rather give up Mexican food? Movie Plot Idea As the Flexural Strength was flowing through us, we got even more creative. How about this for a movie plot? The main character could manipulate the dreams of others. Similar to Freddy in a way. But it's much more subtle for a super power. You can influence the decisions of others and control their dreams! This spun off into thinking about the subconscious and how you can condition it. Looking for More Beer? If you would like to support the show, take a look at our Patreon page. Also, with Patreon you can support us financially so we can at least break even on our expenses, expand faster, and keep exploring new drinks! Cheers!
If you've not been watching Back To Life, you're missing out, as you'll learn from our Mickey's chat with its creator and star Daisy Haggard. They chat about research, old-school romance and crisps. Always with the crisps, those two. Meanwhile, Hannah's been on the Zoom with Catherine Cranfield to talk about Flushed, her play about premature ovarian insufficiency and in Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's shocked - SHOCKED - by the findings of a new report into why girls are put off sport. There's a bit of Lego sticking in the throat in The Bush Telegraph, not that anyone should be putting Lego in their mouth, to be clear. And there's some tough, tough women in Rated or Dated, as we watch Barbara Kopple 1976's documentary Harlan County USA. All human life is here.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
10-12-21 We're headed to Baltimore, where we'll catch up with James Boicourt, founder and owner of Charm City Meadworks. James began making mead back in college (NC State) around 2004, after taking a great class on introductory beekeeping. He was already trying out homebrewing, and got so interested in beekeeping and entomology that he ended up taking a graduate level bee class. What else was a college kid going to do with a bunch of surplus honey anyhow? Of course he fermented it. It seemed like a great idea for a business someday, as there was very little available anywhere at that time, and when you could find or order it, choices were usually very limited. The knowledge base for making mead at that time was also very limited, particularly with regards to yeast strains, care and feeding of the yeast, etc. he remembers looking up some of the early example recipes on GotMead.com. He took what he was able to find and did several large controlled experiments over the years, doing a few batches of a control recipe, and working out which variables had the largest impact on taste. Needless to say 25 5 gallon batches running in parallel was not always the most easy of things to find a person willing to host early on. In early 2014, James and a good friend were looking to invest their time in something in the craft beverage industry. After some hard looking, Andrew and James circled back to mead because we felt like it was a relatively untapped opportunity that they could bootstrap. From early on their focus was on lighter, lower abv products, and predominantly canned ones, primarily because they enjoyed drinking them on a daily basis, and friends highly encouraged those as a very drinkable option. Covid has certainly been a big hit, but going from 1200 sq ft a few years ago to 10,000 in just a few years has been an interesting ride. The Charm City Meadworks taproom is at 400 E Biddle St, Baltimore, MD 21202. [break] This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. The use, or rather mis-use, of non-disclosure agreements is rife in all sorts of nefarious dealings. Zelda Perkins, former assistant to Harvey Weinstein and the first to break her NDA with him, and Julie Macfarlane, a law professor who took on the Anglican Church, want to change that and they chat to Mick about their new campaign, Can't Buy My Silence. Julie also has a book decoding the well-worn methods used by church, school and state to silence survivors, from first reporting to cross-examination to NDAs, and Going Public: A Survivor's Journey From Grief to Action is available here. Meanwhile, Jen chats to actor and playwright Merlynn Tong about her adaptation of Antigone, and why she's written Creon as a woman, while in Jenny Off The Blocks, she's asking can women have it all, and looking to Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg for the answers. No, really. In the Bush Telegraph, we're wondering if flagging down a bus is really the answer to institutionalised sexism in the Metropolitan police. The last 18 months have taught us a lot, including the value of public art, so Mickey's been on the Zoom with the excellent Gemma Cairney to talk about her new TV show, Landmark, and the search for someone to create a new landmark for Coventry. Jen's been chatting to filmmaker and artist Margaret Salmon about her film Icarus (After Amelia) and the impact of lockdown on women. She also picked this week's Rated or Dated, Crocodile Dundee, and you can probably guess how that went. There's also plenty o' sport, bad news from Texas in SOTW and murder hornet mayhem in BT. This week we chat about "Nancy Drew and the Haunted Bridge" which, spoiler alert, is completely not haunted even a little bit. Karen ruins her life by seeking out haunted bridge tales, and Kelly wants a kidney-shaped pool in her survival bunker. We bemoan the ungodly amount of golf in this book, decide that our loyalty to Ned is about to be recalled, and watch in awe as George wins the entire book by "achieving the prize boo boo." ***Trigger warning for discussions of hauntings and racially-motivated crimes.****Rated 5 out of 12 autographed golf balls.
It's an epic challenge for our resident music expert Liz Buckley in this week podzine, as Mick asks her to cram as much info about the incredible Billie Holiday's jam-packed short life into a 15-minute chat. Start your clocks now...Meanwhile, Jen's been on the Zoom with journalist and writer Sophie Heawood about her excellent book The Hungover Games, and the trials and tribulations of getting accidentally knocked up. And in Jenny Off The Blocks, she is, as ever, rounding up the latest news in women's sport. We won't beat around the Bush Telegraph, it's a particularly bleak news week – but you probably already knew that. Hopefully some interesting chat and very angry vaginas will cheer you up, as the team give 1986's Aliens the Rated or Dated treatment. Countdown #333 Are your feathers all neatly in order? Or, if you prefer, do you have a thick skin when it comes to your taste in film? Because it's feather-ruffling time on The Countdown! This Ep should surely come with a trigger warning for lovers of popular film as Paul and Wayne call out their ten most hated films with a Rotten Tomato Audience Score of 80% or over. Sound convoluted? Just you wait! In fact, the challenge this week is two-fold ... Not only to figure out how the hell the guys decided to go with such a complicated topic, but also to not shut the Ep off once Wayne makes a base joke about one of your fave films, or Paul disses the same because Patrick Swayze was just too damn old! Are you up to the challenge? Can you rearrange your feathers adequately? Find out as The Countdown continues ... Hit up the CC Radio Network that The Countdown is a proud part of and follow the headers to the other great shows. Join The Countdown Podcast Listener Community on Facebook so you can interact more directly with Paul and Wayne and vote in the weekly poll for who has the best list! Come join the second ever Countdown Scavenger Hunt as created by patron to the show, Josh Ragland! And finally, how about some Countdown merch? Grab a new range of products right here!
