Tens of millions of people across the US could soon lose their legal right to abortion, according to a leaked Supreme Court document. A leaked draft opinion written by Samuel Alito, a conservative justice, suggests the country's top court may overturn a landmark decision legalising abortion. It's expected around half the country's states would move to ban abortion if the 1973 Roe v Wade decision is overruled. Speaking to media earlier, President Joe Biden called on elected officials across the country to fight to protect the right to choose. Susie Ferguson spoke to human rights lawyer Julie F. Kay.

Watch the eventhere. In conversation with Dorothy Roberts Sandra Shaber Memorial Lecture Recognized by the National Law Journal as one of the ''100 Most Influential Lawyers in America,'' Kathryn Kolbert made history in 1992 when she argued the case Planned Parenthood v. Casey before the U.S. Supreme Court, a case widely recognized as protecting the right to an abortion guaranteed by Roe v. Wade. The founder of the Athena Center for Leadership at Barnard College and the cofounder of the Center for Reproductive Rights, she created and was the executive producer of NPR's Justice Talking series. Julie F. Kay has spent decades on the front lines of the legal fight to advance gender equality and religious freedom in the U.S. and internationally. After starting her career in law as a staff attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights , she has since helped pave the way for the legalization of abortion in Ireland, fought to protect the parenting rights of people leaving ultra-religious communities, and served as a founding president of Women's Link Worldwide.  In Controlling Women, Kolbert and Kay offer a comprehensive account of the struggle to safeguard the protections of Roe v. Wade and preserve women's fundamental reproductive rights in the face of nearly 50 years of legal battles. Dorothy Roberts is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. She is also founding director of the Penn Program on Race, Science & Society in the Center for Africana Studies and the author of several books that focus on health, social justice, and bioethics. On the 71st Episode of the #VoteHerIn Series, guests Kathryn Kolbert and Julie F. Kay discuss their book, Controlling Women: What We Must Do Now to Save Reproductive Freedom. "Controlling Women, by distinguished lawyers Kathryn Kolbert and Julie F. Kay, is the definitive account of the battle for American women's reproductive freedom. Roe v. Wade protected abortion rights and Planned Parenthood v. Casey preserved them. Yet, in the subsequent decades, these constitutional rights have been gutted by restrictive state legislation, the appointment of hundreds of anti-abortion judges, and violence against abortion providers. Today, the ultra-conservative majority at the Supreme Court has Americans worried that American women are about to lose their most fundamental reproductive protections. When Roe is toppled, abortion may quickly become a criminal offense in nearly one-third of the United States. At least six states have enacted bans on abortion as early as six weeks of pregnancy—before many women are even aware they are pregnant. Today, 89% of U.S. counties do not have a single abortion provider, in part due to escalating violence and intimidation aimed at disrupting services.Authors Kolbert and Kay share the story of one of the most divisive issues in American politics through behind-the-scenes personal narratives of stunning losses, hard-earned victories, and moving accounts of women and health care providers at the heart of nearly five decades of legal battles. At this make-or-break moment for legal abortion in the United States, Kolbert and Kay propose audacious new strategies inspired by medical advances, state-level protections, human rights models, and activists across the globe whose courage and determination are making a difference."-excerpted from Hachette Books
