Funding, for one thing. Political frontmen, for another. The question is why? Money trailing into Far-Right groups connects European aristocrats with US Christian evangelicals and Russian propagandists. Together, these vastly different interest groups support joint campaigns undermining migrant rights with one hand, and abortion rights with the other. Connecting the dots between them, is a debunked White Supremacist conspiracy theory called ‘The Great Replacement'. It argues that White Europeans and Americans are being deliberately seditiously replaced by non-white migrant populations, and that the solution is not just closing borders, it's forcing up White birth rates— and forcing down abortions. Sian Norris is an investigative journalist exposing these dirty money trails, and she joins us on Media Storm. She says that while wealthy European aristocrats, hardline American Christians and Russian disinformationists may seem very different on the surface, each is incentivised to subscribe to a fascistic mythic past in which White people were superior to others and women's bodies were controllable and for childbirth. As a result, absurd and extremist worldviews have entered mainstream politics. How normalised is White Supremacism today? How does it threaten women's bodily autonomy? How have legacy news outlets helped to make extremism mainstream? This week's episode brings together the different fights against two far-right frontiers: immigration and abortion. Anti-abortion extremists are hard at work attacking access through the courts, policy, clinic harassment, and more. Simultaneously, the Trump administration's chaos—including RFK Jr.'s harmful actions as head of HHS—are continuing to disassemble comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights, brick-by-brick. Mini Timmaraju, President and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All, sits down to talk with us about how anti-abortion extremists are endlessly and strategically beelining for abortion and contraception. One focus of attack centers on mifepristone, the first of two medications taken during a medication abortion. It is extremely safe and has been available on the market for 25 years. Yet, Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA out of Texas saw anti-abortion advocates arguing against mifepristone (despite FDA approval of hundreds of studies proving its safety). It was headed by anti-reproductive health and rights judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who has now sent the case to Missouri. Judge Kacsmaryk has referenced the Comstock Act, which would ban the mailing of abortion pills. The anti-abortion movement has deeply shaped our era, and not just because of the repeal of Roe v Wade. As scholar of the right Carol Mason argues, it also helped provide a gateway to the growth of the authoritarian right by normalizing violent rhetoric and political violence, while exporting ideas and tactics to the right abroad. She discusses the evolution of the antiabortion movement to the present. Send us a textSen. Löki Tobin (D-Anchorage) discusses the resolutions up for a vote today, August 22, 2025, by the Alaska State Medical Board. The first, listed on the agenda as "Board Statement/New Regulation Project: Late Term Abortion," is a statement drafted by board member and Republican candidate for governor Dr. Matt Heilala that would seek to limit access to abortions later in pregnancy. The second makes up the bulk of Sen. Tobin's and my discussion today. It is also a statement drafted by board member Heilala declaring practitioners who prescribe gender affirming care in minors as “grossly negligent and therefore subject to disciplinary sanctions.” Gender-affirming care for adolescents, when indicated and provided in partnership with families, is evidence-based medicine. It is recognized by every major medical association—including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Endocrine Society—as the standard of care. There are currently less than 100 youth in Alaska prescribed hormonal treatment as part of gender affirming care. There are no gender affirming surgical procedures being performed on minors in Alaska. Here are links to the Transgender series on the podcast from 2024:1. By now advancing a resolution, the Board is disregarding that decision and overstepping its proper role. Even more concerning, in the same discussion the Board raised abortion as another area for punitive action, signaling an alarming trend of politicizing medicine across multiple domains. R-Soul: Reclaiming the Soul of Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice
After a 2023 ballot initiative confirmed that anti-abortion sentiment is a minority position in Ohio, the state's anti-abortion industrial complex split into two fairly distinct ideological camps. Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams explore the rift between Ohio's “Pro-Life Movement” and their foil, the “Abolish Human Abortion” sect — including why those names are better classed as propaganda than truly descriptive. Drawing on strong theological reflection, the history of U.S. reproductive rights, and basic grade-school logic, Kelley and Terry take listeners through the break-up we all knew was coming as the anti-abortion rhetoric starts to not make sense even to its own practitioners. Recounting both firsthand experience and repro-political history, Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams help listeners see the explicit connection between anti-abortion ideology and modern political violence in the U.S. Catalyzed by the recent assassination of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman, Kelley and Terry explain why it's no big surprise that Rep. Hortman's assassin also targeted abortion workers in his destructive quest. Revisiting historical examples of anti-abortion violence, this episode also provides listeners with concrete steps to achieve focus, maintain perspective, and keep pressing forward in the fight for abortion justice and reproductive freedom. As the Texas legislative session ends there are new bills passed that could again reshape the state's access to abortion care. Advocates for reproductive freedom are condemning the passage of Senate Bill 31, The Life of the Mother Act and SB 33, a ban on San Antonio's Reproductive Justice Fund.
Mary Ziegler is a law professor at UC Davis and a leading scholar on the abortion debate. In her new book Personhood, she argues that the anti-abortion movement's ultimate goal is fetal personhood, which would give fetuses and embryos the rights of people under the Constitution. Ziegler's book makes the case that the history of this movement is crucial to our understanding of where the abortion fight is headed next. In today's episode, Ziegler talks with Here & Now's Tiziana Dearing about the legal meaning of fetal personhood, the way conservatives might reimagine constitutional equality, and whether this debate amounts to a new Civil War.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

What's next for the battle over abortion? In this lecture, Mary Ziegler argues that undoing Roe v. Wade was never the endpoint for the antiabortion movement. Since the 1960s, the goal has been to secure recognition of fetuses and embryos as persons under the 14th Amendment, making abortion unconstitutional. The battle for personhood also aims to overhaul the regulation of in vitro fertilization and contraception, change the meaning of equality under the law, and determine how courts decide which fundamental rights Americans enjoy. Mary Ziegler is one of the world's leading historians of the U.S. abortion debate, and an expert on the law, history, and politics of reproduction, health care, and conservatism in the U.S. She is the author or editor of numerous articles and seven books on reproduction, autonomy, and the law. An anti-abortion influencer insists she'll continue her high-risk ectopic pregnancyThe Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on October 28, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/an-anti-abortion-influencer-insistsThe panelists discussed Alex Gooding's decision to continue her pregnancy despite the life-threatening complications of cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy (CSP). They critiqued her reliance on faith and ideology over medical advice, pointing out the dangers this decision poses to her life and her seven children. They expressed concern about the broader implications of her choice, as it may encourage others in anti-abortion circles to reject critical healthcare in similar situations. The panelists highlighted the importance of prioritizing evidence-based medical care over ideological stances, especially when lives are at risk. They also addressed the moral responsibility Gooding has to her existing children and how her public stance might shift harmful narratives around pregnancy complications. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.46.1 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Eli Slack and Jimmy Jr.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Republicans appeared to soften their stance on abortion ahead of next week's party convention and adopted a policy platform this week that didn't include a call for a federal ban. They did so at the direct request of former President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly tried to downplay the issue during the campaign while also taking credit for ending Roe v. Wade. But the 16-page policy document opens the door to establishing fetal personhood, which would threaten access to abortion and IVF. Shefali Luthra, who covers reproductive health for The 19th News and is author of “Undue Burden,” explains what's actually in the Republican platform. And in headlines: President Biden commemorated NATO's 75th anniversary in opening remarks at the alliance's summit in Washington, Congressional Democrats appear to be falling in line behind Biden as the party's presidential nominee, and an Israeli airstrike killed more than two dozen people in southern Gaza on Tuesday.Show Notes:The 19th, co-written by Shefali Luthra: “RNC approves platform that would give rights to fetuses, endangering abortion, IVF” – https://tinyurl.com/25gsbl6dPod Save America, “Biden Digs In” – https://crooked.com/podcast/biden-digs-in/What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
