Faith Organizers Kelley Fox and Terry Williams dive into the ever-evolving status of legal abortion in Ohio, discussing how confusion and constantly changing legal standards are not just a coincidence in a state under assault by anti-abortion religious extremists. Addressing the real motives of forced birthers who author legislative confusion, Kelley and Terry take a look at the religious underpinnings of this extreme agenda and offer some alternative ways for pro-choice religious voices to reclaim the power, witness, and integrity of their religious traditions in support of abortion seekers. They didn't get it.  An Eastern Michigan University official is due in court today -- after getting arrested for indecent exposure. (Credit: Charlie Langton/WWJ)

Many critics and opponents of Christianity have insisted that the Christian Church, from its inception in the first century, has been anti-woman, now more than ever because of her anti-abortion stance. If this is true, then, no self-respecting woman should ever set foot inside a church; sadly, many people, particularly the young and the educated, have done just that. This videoblog examines, historically, some of the major arguments against the church on account of her being anti-woman. What you will find is that much of the argument is disinformation: an intentional twisting of obvious historical truth to warrant a false narrative that the Christian church from the very outset was anti-woman. The fact of the matter is that the church has historically been pro-woman, with unfortunate exceptions. You may still insist that the church's opposition to abortion qualifies her as anti-woman. Well, that all depends on what is inside a mother's womb. The church's teaching on the matter is consistent with its historical teaching that values the life of women.

Happy Labor Day Weekend to all our listeners. We hope you get out and participate in your area's Labor Day events. In this episode, we take stock in the resurgence of labor organizing in America as new Gallup Polling shows 71% support unions, the highest since 1965! Will it lead to a rebuilding of the depleted ranks of organized labor, shifting power in a progressive direction, or is more structural reform needed to restore the right to form unions? The end of summer means the November Election is just around the corner. Behind in the polls, Ron Johnson goes on the attack while getting help from some Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporters who distort public perceptions in the name of balanced coverage. In the real scandal fest that is the MAGA wing of the GOP, it is revealed that Tim Michaels' Foundation Gave to Anti-Abortion and Anti-LGBTQIA+ groups. We also review the latest attacks on our democracy, including the shameful end of Vos and Gableman's sham election review and his crusade to imprison elected officials and mayors who push for access to voting. The Democrats seem to be surging in the polls. What does it mean for the prospects of building a true governing majority in the second half of President Biden's first term?

On today's episode which is also our season ender, the JJC panel lends a male perspective on the recent shift in abortion rights due to the US Surpreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, a handful of states are adopting anti-abortion policies that are barring Women's access to birth control and birth/abortion related medical proceudres previously affored under the Constitution. Is this issue unilateral or do the opinions of both Men and Women play a vital role in the matter? Also, what does this possibly mean for the future of other rights geared towards marginalized groups? Two local anti-abortion advocates heralded the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. But they say their work isn't done even though abortions are illegal in almost all instances in Missouri. This conversation follows one earlier in the week with two abortion rights supporters. Editor's Note: The guests claimed that “contraceptives can cause what's called abortifacients,” a drug that causes an abortion. That's not true. Contraceptives, including Plan B, do not cause an abortion. They prevent fertilization. Pregnancy only occurs when a fertilized egg has been implanted in the wall of the uterus. A guest also claimed that “for a woman to take contraception of any form, it is not healthy for her.” The medical community agrees that while there are some risks associated with birth control, “all methods of contraception are considered okay for healthy women.”

UC Davis Professor of Law Mary Ziegler is one of the world's leading authorities on the U.S. abortion wars and the history of reproductive rights in this country. Since the leak of a draft of a Supreme Court majority opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade and the guaranteed right to an abortion, Ziegler has been one of the most sought-after experts on this issue. Ziegler's timely new book Dollars for Life: the Antiabortion Movement and the Fall of the Republican Establishment, explores how the antiabortion movement remade the Republican Party and led to this current historic moment. She traces how the anti-abortion movement helped to revolutionize the rules of money in U.S. politics and persuaded conservative voters to focus on the federal courts. Ziegler offers a surprising new view of the slow drift to extremes in American politics and says it had everything to do with the strange intersection of right-to-life politics and campaign spending. Her previous books have explored the legal history of Roe v. Wade and the role of privacy rights in the abortion debate. At a historic time that might mark a turnaround in abortion rights, The Commonwealth Club is pleased to host a true expert on the topic and this historic moment. You won't want to miss this important conversation.
