Oh hey there, hi, good morning. That's right, we are back and if any of you expected to hear some kind of wacky, delusional, insane stories after a whole week away ... then clearly you are a devoted roadie and knew you were going to get just that. So, Angi took a trip to New York for her best friend's birthday which in turn became a weird celebrity get-together as well. Where else would you ever hear about Dwayne Wade and Busy Phillips hanging out in the same place after all? However, that drunken bash was not the star of the New York trip because that honor belonged to a malfunctioning fire alarm and Taylor Taking a Tumble (if you get this reference, good on you.) The first part of this "tragic" tale starts with the return from the party where everyone was too drunk and ready to sleep. However, the fire alarm in the hotel had different ideas and proceeded to go off awakening everyone and sending them fleeing in case the fire was real (and not just in Angi's head as you probably wrongfully assumed.) This would proceed to happen 7 more times after that, each timed between falling back asleep and annoying enough that the fire department even showed up. The biggest issue though came when Angi went to take a shower in a combination bathtub/shower. See, getting out of this was a little slippery and grandma took a tumble into some porcelain. Though she braced the fall, her knee took the brunt of it and it "caused a bone to pop up." Not content with just that delusion, Angi consulted with Dr. Google and AngiMD to discover that she has Osgood Schlatter Disease. Weirdly enough, Marris actually has this and Angi felt seen for him trying to hone in on her imaginary issues (of course.) Marris' was not caused by falling in the shower but because he grew too fast for his knees and they couldn't keep up. Also, this disease usually happens in adolescents and not 79 year old women. Combining that, plus her new bone in her leg and toss in some mosquito bites that she is allergic to and you have a summer where Angi is afraid to show off the gams. However, since we can't leave you with the thought of a 84 year old woman not showing some ankle all summer, it seems that a solution was created. Angi will be getting a knee brace because that will bring her all the attention she so desperately desires but refuses to say aloud that she is seeking. In other words, it seems we did not miss a beat the week that we were gone.
Body shame is real. We've all experienced it, but what do we do about it? Earlier in May, Oprah Winfrey hosted a three-hour-long forum with body love experts, actresses, and influencers to start a conversation about bodies, weight, and how we can start changing the narrative. Titled, "Making the Shift" and hosted by WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers), the conversation had several meaningful moments where women from all over the country shared the hurt, shame, and confusion they'd felt about their body image. In today's episode, Heather digs into what happened in the Oprah conversation. She explores how the one piece missing from these eloquent conversations is the key unlocking body shame. If you've been struggling with your body size or shape, and are looking for a fresh answer that's meatier than telling yourself positive affirmations in the mirror, this conversation will be a great encouragement to you. There are real answers out there for your body image struggles -- and the good news is they don't require Jedi mind tricks or "naked jump roping in front of the mirror" (yes, that was from the Oprah special!!!). If you don't know, now you know. James Alsop, a one-time contestant on Bravo's Step It Up And Dance, is now one of the entertainment industry's most sought-after choreographers doing some of the most interesting work. James began her career as co-choreographer of Beyoncé's videos, tour, and promotional materials for the multi-platinum selling records Who Run the World, Dance For You, and Love on Top. And we get into how she made her way into dancing with Beyonce, here. She also assisted in choreographing the huge hit music video Booty by Jennifer Lopez. James has worked with Paul Thomas Anderson for the Haim music video Just A Little of Your Love, and after choreographing the entire season of Maya Rudolph and Martin Short's variety series Maya + Marty, she was asked by Tina Fey to choreograph season three of the Emmy nominated series The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. A truly incredible body of work, and there's more. She most recently choreographed the Peacock musical TV series Girls5Eva starring Story + Rain cover star Busy Phillips, and UnPrisoned, the Tracy McMillan series starring Kerry Washington. Then there's Pose, the superbowl, the Dahmer series, Emily In Paris; the Gossip Girl reboot; and it was a dream come true when James worked on the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody. There are so many more projects to name. On the podcast we talk about that experience as well as her vision for The Devil Wears Prada musical, and being inspired by the ways people walk, for it. We discuss working through her feelings and her skillset to choreograph the upcoming A Transparent Musical, based on the Emmy award winning series from Amazon Prime. We talk living by the rule of rising to the occasion to be the best you can be, the time she surprised Beyonce, and the time she was at a party that changed her life, and that was shortly before Story + Rain's Editor in Chief and Founder, Tamara, met James. James loves to teach; we talk about her teaching style and philosophies, and her dancing style---"intricate, sexy, and groovy” is how she describes it. We talk all about sticking with the dream, and the opportunities that opened up after she decided to “wake up and see who I really am every day”. Tired of hiding, James transitioned in 2015. From stories about mornings in the kitchen with her siblings singing and dancing with her mother blasting Luther Vandross, to when Tamara met and dressed James in LA on a Bravo ad campaign set and when she knew there was a superstar before her---you'll be inspired. One of our favorite people, a one-of-a-kind talent, our conversations with creatives continue as Story + Rain talks to James Alsop. Long awaited, much anticipated, Maya and Angela touch on so many random things (rock n' roll, Bobby Flay, Etsy sex toys) while somehow predicting the future? Maya talks about her relationship with singer, rapper, and flutist, Lizzo, after watching her new show Lizzo's Big Grrls. She concludes that Lizzo is about as good as she can get for a public figure but has two strikes against her (being a "good fat" and making the god forsaken brand Yitty). Little did they know that an impending third strike was hurtling towards home plate as they spoke. There's lots of Lesbianism in this episode, at least more than usual. As Maya talks about the movie Saving Face (2004) and its casual racism in a seemingly idyllic Chinese-American Lesbian utopia (Flushing, Queens), Angela recounts watching a She-ro chef documentary and was genuinely all over the damn place. All this is followed up with a rousing and extremely Queer game of fuck, marry, kill that features celebs including Karla Souza, Ever Maynard, Gara Loning, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareillis, and Busy Phillips. On the show today… Singer Lachie Gill has won the 2022 season of The Voice Australia, but the news has once again kickstarted an important conversation about diversity and reality TV. And Busy Phillips has announced that she and her husband, screenwriter Marc Silverstein, have separated after 15 years of marriage and are planning to divorce. The couple kept the news a secret for well over a year and said that going down the normal celebrity separation path “made them both feel sick”. Plus, it's the story that's been dominating headlines for the past few days, a ‘cheating scandal involving Married At First Sight, stars Olivia Frazer and Jackson Lonie. Now we need to talk about the publicity stunt accusations and what this says about the public's appetite for reality TV stars and public misfortunes. Everybody loves a cult classic, but we don't--well, actually, Rhiane does, but Jordan and John don't. We watched the iconic movie "White Chicks" starring two of the famous Wayans brothers, but we don't know who they are at any point of the movie. The gang sits down and gets into Busy Phillips' amazing performance and hilarious one-liners, Rhiane's connection to this movie and how we almost got a celeb on the show, whether or not the use of white face was problematic or not for the time the movie came out, Terry Crews and his rendition of "1,000 Miles," whether or not poop humor is funny, date rape drinks, and more. Later they do a segment of Fact or Fiction and All Sides. Please leave a rating and review on iTunes so other people know that this podcast is worthy of a toast. Check out the Pierce Brosnan sci-fi flick "The Lawnmower Man," as it will be the topic of discussion for the next episode. Thanks for listening!

Planned Parenthood provides vital health services to 2.4 million people each year through more than 600 health centers across the country. She has been in Planned Parenthood's leadership for more than a decade as PPFA board chair, Planned Parenthood Federal PAC chair, and a Planned Parenthood Action Fund board member. Photo by Autumn De Wilde Busy Philipps, New York Times Best-Selling author, actor, activist, and mother, is our guest today on the Hoffman Podcast. Listen in as Busy speaks with Drew about her time at the Process. Busy tells us that through the Process she found her way out of awareness hell, something we learn about at the Process. (Listen in to learn about awareness hell.) She also gained Process tools and practices she now uses each day. Busy now experiences a beautiful space where peace and freedom exist. Passionate and articulate, Busy also shares about her activism around reproductive justice. We are grateful for this conversation. MORE ABOUT BUSY PHILIPPS Busy currently stars in the comedy series GIRLS5EVA, produced by Tina Fey, now streaming on Peacock. The series centers on a one-hit-wonder girl group from the '90s who try for another chance at pop stardom. In 2020, Philipps launched her podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best. The show features conversations between Philipps and her creative partner, Caissie St. Onge, and their guests, who reflect on times in their lives when a setback led to better opportunities. From 2018 to 2019, Philipps was the host of the late-night talk show BUSY TONIGHT. Philipps served as executive producer on the show, alongside Tina Fey. In 2018, Philipps released a collection of humorous autobiographical essays in her book THIS WILL ONLY HURT A LITTLE that was immediately a New York Times Best Seller the first week. The book offers unfiltered and candid stories and was published by Simon and Schuster's Touchstone division. Philipps has also used her voice as an advocate and activist. In 2019, she joined the Advisory Board of SeeHer, testified before Congress on reproductive rights after publicly discussing her own abortion, and launched the #youknowme campaign on social media. On the big screen, Philipps was in the STX romantic comedy, I FEEL PRETTY, opposite Amy Schumer and Michelle Williams. She also appeared in Joel Edgerton's thriller THE GIFT, alongside Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. On television, Philipps was seen in HBO's VICE PRINCIPALS, an 18-episode comedy from the creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill. She also starred opposite Courteney Cox on the popular TBS comedy COUGAR TOWN where she played ‘Laurie Keller.' AS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Bashing: Bashing is a form of cathartic release. It's a powerful and pivotal experience in the Process week. This kind of release supports us in acknowledging, expressing, and transforming strong emotions which may have previously been denied. Expressing emotions like anger or disappointment in this way, we release them from the body. We use the body and our voice to express what we no longer want to hold within us. The more deeply we move into expression, the more space we clear. This creates room to experience forgiveness and compassion. Release work also allows us to feel calm and be able to deal with situations in a manner. It can stop us from taking our ‘stuff' out on others, too! In so doing, we claim our power and freedom. In this episode, meditation teacher and author, Shelly Tygielski talks of her personal journey leading toward the core insight from her new book Sit Down and Rise Up that the “secret of life is this: show up.” Join us for this conversation about the role mindfulness practice and creating community can play in safeguarding our well-being during these challenging times as we emerge from COVID19. Shelly describes how she built a “pandemic of love” that has resulted in not only millions of dollars of philanthropic aid but, more importantly, created a community of meaningful connection between those giving and receiving. About Shelly: After spending nearly 20 years in Corporate America, immersed in Fortune 1000 organizations and holding executive positions leading public and privately held companies, Shelly decided to stop following the expected path and start following her lifelong passion – mindfulness and meditation. Her journey began by teaching free meditation classes Sunday morning on the sands of Hollywood Beach, Florida. What started as a group of 12 friends blossomed into a community of more than 15,000 in a matter of two years – a diverse mix of souls that proclaimed itself “The Sand Tribe”. The class is always free. The warm welcome is for anyone who shows up. Shelly's work is built around one simple precept: No Barrier To Entry. She wants everyone to have access to the joys and health benefits of meditation and mindfulness. Not just those with means. At the heart of Shelly's practice is a fierce justice warrior and social activist. Shelly combines the pragmatic business skills she learned in the corporate world with the tenets of mediation and mindfulness to make the world a better place. Shelly is deeply involved in offering trauma-informed healing practices to communities affected by gun violence and mass shootings and has led fully funded retreats for survivors and victims' families representing Parkland, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Aurora, Columbine and more. She was featured on the cover of Mindful Magazine® in June 2019 for her work in this space. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, once again Shelly rose to the occasion. On March 14th, 2020, at the dawn of the crisis, she posted two simple Google forms online. One read “Get Help” the other “Give Help”. The next morning, she was shocked to find hundreds of requests from both sides of the equation. She began directly matching those in need with patrons willing to help them meet their needs and the Pandemic of Love movement was born. Those few hundred requests grew to thousands; which grew to over 600,000 people matched within six months. To date, Pandemic of Love boasts nearly 1000 volunteers worldwide and has directly exchanged nearly $40 million in donations. It has been featured on international newsfeeds and network television, including CNN, BBC and The Kelly Clarkson Show. It has enjoyed incredible support from influencers such as Debra Messing, Chelsea Handler, Maria Shriver, Busy Phillips and Kristen Bell. Pandemic of Love continues to match those in need during this crisis directly with patrons who can help through their grassroots mutual aid platform. This work will continue well beyond the pandemic and Shelly is committed to formalizing mutual aid in communities across the world. Shelly has been an organizer and speaker for the Women's March. She works to support organizations such as March For Our Lives, Black Lives Matter, indigenous tribes such as the Navajo and Hopi, and other groups committed to social justice and driving real change. In doing so, she's also seen the toll that activism can take on people. The exhaustion. The let downs. Even feelings of failure and hopelessness. That's why a big part of what Shelly teaches today is self-care. She believes that – in Audre Lorde's words – “self-care is an act of resistance” unto itself because the only way to make change is to maintain your energy, health and mental wellbeing. And the only way to achieve that is through the building of communities of care. Shelly shares her methods of self-care in her upcoming book titled “Sit Down To Rise Up” which will be available in the Fall of 2021. She's also recorded a series of workshops with Recorded Books, available on Audible, including a series on “Self-Care for Turbulent Times.” Shelly is a student of the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and is certified in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). She is also an in-process certified Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute (founded at Google over a decade ago) teacher. Her contemplations and lessons shared freely over social media have gained tens of thousands of followers, and she was recently referred to as one of the most “Powerful Women in Mindfulness” by mindful.org. Shelly holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Miami and a Master's Degree from Columbia University. You can find Shelley here: Facebook , LinkedIn , Twitter , Amazon
