Yaw Owusu, executive manager at Playmaker Group (PMG), has curated the Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) since 2013.   Typically focused in Sefton Park, Covid 19's impact on the city's celebrated portfolio for live music has seen a telling switch in LIMF's structure for 2022. This episode is the story of a festival working for its surrounds, for its community – fans, artists and promoters.   Recorded two weeks ahead of the event, Yaw discusses how, coming off the pandemic, with Liverpool venues suffering, LIMF model 2022 is moving indoors - delivering a cultural tour of the city and making sure venues “get the fair end of the stick”.   In a fascinating 40 minutes Yaw talks inclusivity, logos and theming the event around Liverpool's huge appetite for music.   This year the theme, and the formula for his longlist of potential players, is Power To The People & Purpose – a mission Yaw fully explained to performers so they can play a full part in its delivery.   To keep up to date with all the news, subscribe for free here. Your Music Industry Podcast | Your Guide to Navigating the Music Business

As the curator of Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF), Yaw is year upon year creating invaluable opportunities for the artists, community and culture of Liverpool. LIMF is, however, only a small piece of Yaw’s pie with his own organisation The Playmaker Group taking an industry-leading position in Creative Consultancy, Content Creation and Event Management. To date, some of The Playmakers Clients include Glastonbury, Universal, British Airways and the BBC to name a few. In this podcast episode, we dive deep into Yaw's world to understand his perspective, story and achievement. So what are 3 things that you will learn from today’s episode? * We leap into Yaw's rather interesting journey from a degree in Law to playing Basketball for the US Air Force to making documentaries for the BBC and of course, curating Liverpool International Music Festival. * Second thing you will learn from this episode is how books, learning and diving deep into art and culture has really shaped Yaw's perspective, approach and drive. We also explore some nuggets on identity in relation to the industry. * Finally we, of course, cover the world of the Liverpool International Music Festival from an understanding into the journey to what the role of the Curator entails. Your Music Industry is a podcast and community of music industry knowledge, wisdom and experience. Which, through offering insight, guides you in achieving your music related goals. Now we are out of the World Cup we can have a change of subject on the T.V. for a change…that is when the Suarez incident has died down…he got a 9 match ban but I think the lad needs help…why not just take all his teeth out?...problem solved. Having said that the Coulson affair has taken over….and as usual the BBC drag it out for 50% of the bulletins….as I have always said the press get away with far too much…they couldn’t care less who gets hurt as long as they sell their trashy papers…..looks like Coulson is taking the hit but if it was up to me they would all go behind bars…..and Cameron hasn’t come out of it too well. Also someone has “come forward” with allegations regarding Jimmy Savile…saying he saw Savile drag a young girl out of a chidren’s home and the girl was later found dead….there is as yet no evidence whatsoever but guess what…headlines in the paper “CHILD KILLER” with a picture of JS….Proof?...who needs proof?...let’s sell papers….something needs to be done. I must say I do enjoy Wimbledon….I played tennis at club level for many years and know how tricky the game is….I don’t think people realise the amount of fitness and training is required to be at the top of the game – it’s probably the toughest sport of them all…..requiring so much skill. I go to a local gym which is part of a tennis centre where they have pro tournaments from time to time….when you watch these guys play you wonder how they SEE the ball never mind get it back…and these guys are NOTHING….I’ve known a few pro players who say unless you are in the top 20 you don’t make much of a living … tough game…come on Andy!!…but I think old Novak will win it. The Liverpool International Music Festival….ex Mathew Street Festival…is once again the subject of criticism – nowadays all the groups are young tribute bands and the old rockers aren’t too happy…they think it should reflect original Merseybeat…I’m not sure how I feel about this…a part of me says move on where another part says The Beatles still pull in the tourists from far and wide….but I’m not too sure whether a bunch of ageing sixties bands still have the appeal to the young?...at the end of the day it’s about money I suppose Track 4 on my Doowop album is entitled “Rock and Roll Princess”….this song came about after I’d written “Love At First Sight” (track 1)…and a guy in Germany got hold of it and put it on YouTube…he set the song to a picture of Venice (?) and when the chorus kicked in he put a photo of his little daughter holding a uke…it was so delightful I got in touch with him and said she looked like a Rock and Roll Princess and it went from there….I dedicated the song to the little girl (Laura) for the inspiration….it was after this that I decided to make the album.

We chatted about Don's Doowop record on the internet programme With Doowop Joe Conroy before moving to The Mathew Street Festival which has now been re-named - The Liverpool International Music Festival….the old days of bands hammering out Merseybeat seem to be over…now it’s tribute bands from all over the place. There will be a few big stages around the waterfront and no doubt the pubs around the area will have live bands….it’s a great day out for those into it all…I have done it in the past but lugging gear over peoples heads to get to the stage in the Cavern doesn’t do a lot for me…..but the tourists love it….I found an old video of a gig I did at the Cavern…I stood in for The Black Knights and played bass ….with a mate of mine who stood in on guitar….and neither of us can remember it….sad or what. The UK is the most obese country in the world….according to the media….so the government are putting a tax on fattening drinks etc…..making a few more bob for the MPs expenses….I can’t see why they can’t bring DOWN the price of healthy food and drink…HMM…..that obviously wouldn’t work because then they wouldn’t be ripping us off. The new mansion tax has come under fire…..the rich should pay more because they are rich….the way I see this is that it seems all those complaining seem to be the ones who don’t want to get off their backsides….to get rich someone somewhere along the line has worked for it in most cases so in I personally don’t see why they should subsidise the scroungers. Everyone’s moaning that the Poles are taking all our jobs but they had a farmer on and he said he offers jobs to the British citizens first but they don’t want to work…they want to knock off at three…and last about two days…whereas the Poles work from 8 til 6 without complaint…THAT’s why they get the jobs….they should sort out the benefit system here …and soon. Don's in the throes of preparing for the James Burton Concert in July celebrating the Aloha from Hawaii concert he did with Elvis….it’s over three nights and sounds good…there are some good acts…Suzi Quatro,Liverpool Express,Charlie Landsborough and a string of others…Don's doing a Ricky Nelson set with JB….so you get the guitar solos as per record…this will be Don's fourth gig with him. Always a buzz to play with your idols….he’ll have to get practising.
