In the modern age of seriousness, it is refreshing to see a band doing the rounds that still values fun and a good time over politics and bickering. A band who performs with a smile on their face without deferring to any one side of whatever fence is currently being built or in the process of being torn down. And, of course, said band is British, the place where the love of a laugh and the desire to get on with it are part of the staple diet.Indie rock outfit The Lathums have been doing that now for the better part of seven years, plying their trade the world over and being invited to enjoy the facilities at festivals such as SXSW, Glastonbury, Leeds/Reading, Neighbourhood Weekender and plenty more. But if there's one thing you can strike a negative for with The Lathums, it's the fact they have not once brought their infectious band of music to Australian shores, a blight which is soon to be remedied with the four-piece touch down for a run of four shows starting in Fremantle on October 8. Having never heard of The Lathums before, HEAVY had to do a bit more research than usual before sitting down for a chat with frontman Alex Moore, and what we discovered looked like so much fun that we had already made up our mind to go to one of the shows before even speaking with him. After asking Moore how and why The Lathums have neglected Australia until now, we ask him what he is expecting from our audiences, pointing out that we have been known to get rowdy on occasions."Yeah, I was expecting that," he smiled. "I feel like we'd get a good crack out of a crowd in Australia (laughs). Sometimes the crowd feels like they shouldn't say or do anything and just let the band do whatever. But I feel like in Australia it'll be a bit more like engaging, so we'll see."We follow up by asking what we can expect from The Lathums live."We engage with the crowd, we make sure everybody's had a good time and a safe time as well," he promised. "But the makeup around it and the thrill is always different because you never really know what's gonna happen. I'm a bit mad and I can switch quite quickly, so you never know what to expect (laughs)."In the full interview, Alex highlighted the unique energy of The Lathums' live shows, recommending three songs for newcomers to prepare for the tour. He reflected on the musical climate in Wigan at the band's formation in 2018, noting a lack of local activity and their role in revitalising the area's music culture. He shared the band's journey, mentioning the success of their first two albums and emphasising that true success is measured by fan loyalty rather than chart positions. He also expressed eagerness to connect with Australian fans, what they are expecting and more.Tickets and tour info via: frontiertouring.com/thelathumsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Longtime listeners of our show know that The Wolf is an unabashed American Oasis fan. Though he wasn't onboard from the jump, once he discovered the melodies and lyrics of Noel Gallagher, he became a true believer ready to fly the Oasis flag in an attempt to convert more US fans. But Oasis were more of a phenomenon in the UK thanks to a new liberal government, the rise of Brit Pop and Cool Britannia while they were just a couple of foul-mouthed heathens against the grunge-dominated US. However, their 2nd album, What's The Story Morning Glory, is one of the best selling records in the history of the UK and did enjoy strong success in the US. From the opening track Hello (a great way to start an album and concert) to the light and popular Champagne Supernova, Oasis created a juggernaut that was ready to explode after the success of their debut, Definitely Maybe. And while Some Might Say and Don't Look Back in Anger would go on to be the first two #1 hits for the band in the UK, while Wonderwall would become known as one of the biggest pop/rock songs in UK history, you can't tell the full story of the album without the b-sides. Made during the heyday of CDs and CD singles, everytime the band released a new single they gave their fans 4 songs - basically an EP every couple of months. Included in these releases are some amazing songs like Acquiesce (perhaps the greatest b-side of all time), Talk Tonight, Rocking Chair, Masterplan and an amazing version of Cum on Feel The Noize. The 2014 re-release captures all those songs and more and is highly recommended by The Wolf to stream or buy. Obviously Noel Gallagher went through an incredibly creative period using different styles like the hard rocking Morning Glory, fun and jangling She's Electric, and foot stomping Roll With It. On their current world reunion tour, they play 8 songs off the album and 3 more b-sides from the era. Their epic performance at Glastonbury reflected how far the band had come in 2 short years from just learning the songs to being the biggest rock band on the planet. As it turns 30 and the boys are out on their victory lap tour, we take some time to dial into all the songs, the difference between their success in the UK vs the US and ponder what the future might hold for the brothers Gallagher. Opiuo is a genre-bending plethora of auditory and visual masterclasses. Born in 1984 in rural New Zealand, his parents provided the land upon which music festivals were held. This extremely formative growth surrounded by the early incarnations of Aotearoa's electronic music scene exposed him to the celebration of life through self-expression, dance, and giant sound systems. These experiences shaped so much of who he is & what he stands for today. Positivity and movement at the core of the project, his music is an infectious electronic based blend of funk, soul, psychedelia, and booty-shaking bass. Now calling Australia home, Oscar tours his party-starting music throughout the globe. Having spent more than a decade performing at some of the world's most renowned festivals and venues including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and Coachella, as well as selling out Colorado's famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre multiple times, he's performed his music in an unimaginably large array of formats. From self-built Orchestras, to collaborating with symphony choirs, touring his own Opiuo Band, and as an immersive solo audio & visual show, his live creativity is limitless. Taking home the New Zealand Music Award for Best Electronic Album in 2014, his catalogue is vast. Having released 6 full-length albums, 10 EPs, and a myriad of singles and remixes over the last 14 years. In his own words, he is still "just getting started!". Opiuo Links Mr. Bill Links

In the old towns and villages of Britain, before the police, before the tabloids, before social media shame-storms, there were other ways to deal with those who stepped outside the rules. Noisy ways. Cruel ways. Dangerous ways - the 'Rough Music' rituals — part punishment, part performance, part pagan magic — at the dark edge where community, cruelty and celebration collide. Liz Williams, the Glastonbury-based author, folklorist and pagan, came to the Bureau to talk about them. Her latest book Rough Music: Folk Tradition, Transgression and Alternative Britain, explores often violent, forgotten traditions of noise, mockery, and ritual humiliation — and how they ripple forward into today's counterculture, protest movements, and online doxing. And we hear about some other, less cruel, but deeply strange British rituals that cling on: the annual Cheese-Rolling at Cooper's Hill, The Burryman's Parade in Scotland and the yearly Shin Kicking competition in the Cotswolds.. #folklore #tradition #albion #cruelty #shaming #doxing #skimmington #roughmusic #counterculture

In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger tells us about how two journals kept by a Revolutionary War-era girl in the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History's collection have inspired an original work of music. Several years ago, Leonard Raybon (Associate Professor of Music at Tulane University) encountered two journals and other writings by Hannah Hadassah Hickok, held at the Connecticut Museum. Hannah was the matriarch of the non-conformist Smith Family of Glastonbury. Her daughters would go on to became nationally famous for protesting their lack of voting rights in the 1870s by refusing to pay their taxes — an act that resulted in the town of Glastonbury confiscating their property, including their beloved cows. Inspired by the young Hannah's unique voice, Leonard composed an original mini-musical based on her writings. You'll hear Natalie and Leonard's conversation about what moved him to compose the piece and how it fits into his larger project of producing "Ameri-musicals" that use song to get us to think about the past. Professor Raybon, the Connecticut Museum, and the Glastonbury Historical Society are partnering to present this work to the public in a one-time performance on November 8th, 2025 at 7:00 pm at First Church of Glastonbury at 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury. First Church was the Smith family's congregation, so it's a fitting place to host this unique musical experience! You can visit the CT Museum's website to learn more about the concert. For more information on the Smith family, visit the CT Women's Hall of Fame, or read this excellent blog from the Library of Congress. -------------------------------------- Like Grating the Nutmeg? From Glastonbury performers to classical music buffs, Westminster has always been packed full of music obsessives. But the music industry has not always been so obsessed with politicians. Who could forget Stormzy calling out Theresa May over Grenfell or Elton John calling Keir Starmer's government "absolute losers"? So this week on Westminster Insider, host Sascha O'Sullivan finds out what how important the cultural capital of the music industry is to SW1. She talks to boss of music lobby PRS organisation and former Longpigs frontman Crispin Hunt about Tony Blair being buoyed to success during the Britpop era. Corbyn advisor James Schneider reflects on Grime4Corbyn in 2017 and explains how important Stormzy leading the "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" chant was as a cultural moment. James Frith, Labour MP and former frontman of Finka, who once performed Glastonbury, takes Sascha inside the political scene at the music festival. Caroline Dinenage, chair of the culture select committee and former Tory culture minister, told Sascha the music industry was often ungrateful to Conservative politicians, saying they probably said "f*** the Tories" under their breath even after billions of pounds in pandemic-era support. And she takes Sascha inside the current row over artificial intelligence and the music industry. She said Technology Secretary Peter Kyle was initially "arrogant" and "swallowed the A.I. kool-aid". Lord Brennan, Labour peer who was part of the Lord's recent rebellion over AI and is currently leading a fan-led review into music, says the intervention of top musicians can help move the dial and he tells a story of teaming up with Billy Bragg to exact policy change over guitars in jails. The story of Regina Spektor is one of a truly self-made artist. In 1989, at nine years old, Spektor and her family emigrated from Moscow to the Bronx in New York. Her love and affinity for playing the piano found her studying in high school at the Manhattan School of Music, and as she continued her classical studies she was also being exposed to and fell in love with pop music, hip-hop, and punk rock. Her self-released albums 11:11 and Songs led to a growing audience and opening slots for The Strokes and Kings of Leon. She was soon signed to Sire Records, who released her third album, Soviet Kitsch. Fast forward many years, and the list of accolades and accomplishments for Regina is long. She has released eight studio albums, featured at the Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Glastonbury festivals, performed at the White House for the Obamas, wrote the theme song for the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, and has had songs appear in multiple films. She recently reissued her albums Begin to Hope, Far, What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, Remember Us To Life, and Live in London all exclusively on vinyl. Geoff Stanfield caught up with Regina from her home in New York to discuss her early years, her passion for the craft, and takeaways from working with producers such as Jeff Lynne, Jacknife Lee, John Congleton, and Mike Elizondo. Enjoy!

(https://bit.ly/EaGrPodcast)
Part two of RA.999: two NYC Downlow favourites go back-to-back for the first time with a jubilant homage to classic house. The RA Podcast launched 19 years ago in 2006, making it one of the world's longest-running online mix series. As we gear up to celebrate the 1,000th episode, RA.999 lands with five mixes across five days with a cohort of artists who've left a singular mark on electronic music over the past few decades. The chemistry and legacy of these duos make for something very special—and worthy of such a huge milestone. First up was 1morning and Regal86 with a live recording from New York's Bossa Nova. Next up? We move to NYC Downlow, and who better to capture Glastonbury's beloved queer utopia than Prosumer and Peach, going back-to-back for the first time. If house is your thing, then Prosumer and Peach going one-for-one on the decks is nothing short of a treat. With Glastonbury still just about in the rearview mirror, this mix captures the spirit of NYC Downlow. If you're familiar, you'll know this means steamy euphoria all-night long, sweat dripping from the ceiling and an intoxicating feeling in the humid air. And Prosumer is a true Downlow darling—a treasured custodian and storyteller of dance music who delivered his first RA Podcast way back in 2007. "If a record doesn't move me emotionally or physically, I won't play it out," he said at the time, befitting of the impeccable curation and irresistible body groove that became his trademarks. He is, in the words of the Johnny Dangerous track in the mix, the "King of Clubs." For Peach, RA.999 marks a full-circle moment: Prosumer's 2019 closing set in the Downlow is one of her all-time Glastonbury memories. Since her first RA Podcast in 2021, the London-based artist has only grown more in-demand, with sets that typically traverse the house and techno lexicon—and occasionally R&B—with a distinctly peppy energy. "Neither of us are afraid to go deep," she said about playing with Prosumer. "We just had fun with it." @ohpeach @prosumer Read the full interview at ra.co/podcast/1006
