Photo: Members of the MMIW Search & Hope Alliance attend a cadaver session led by Dr. William Borman, in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) Search teams working on Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) cases must prepare themselves for the likelihood they will come across a body. One group based in Portland, Oreg. is proactively preparing volunteers for that encounter, as Brian Bull of Buffalo's Fire reports. Inside an anatomy lab, William Borman, professor of basic sciences for the University of Western States, carefully turns a cadaver over on a metal table. Metal canopies cover human cadavers inside Linfield University's anatomy lab in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Photo: Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) A tinge of formaldehyde fills the air. Seven volunteers with the group, MMIW Search & Hope Alliance, examine its tendons, nerves, and organs. Kimberly Lining is the group's founder. She says she has seen death up close many times. “And I think through my years of traumatic experiences with violent death, I’ve seen a lot, it’s prepared me. I think just due to fire, like steel is forged through fire.” But for most people, exposure to death and corpses is not a recurring thing, so Lining reached out to Borman to arrange a visit. Not only does it gird people for when they find a body, but it helps them discern between human and animal remains. Two volunteers, Sabrina Griffith and Isabella Regalado, say they would recommend this experience. “Just seeing the veins, the actual ligaments, the bone, the muscles, it was quite surprising to see it and feel it in real life. I've only touched bones and stuff like that, so it’s very interesting to actually feel the inner part of our body.” “It’s actually been better than anticipated. I thought it would be a little bit more gruesome, but everyone has been very professional and understanding, and everyone has been doing their best to educate everyone else.” Lining and Borman remind people that viewing cadavers is not the same as coming across a corpse, whether that is in the wilderness or city. Such bodies are not preserved, and beyond what the cause of death inflicted, would be subject to the elements and scavengers. “If it’s in the wilderness, in the forest, bears, cougars, wolves … they’re gonna tear at stuff and leave the bone. So definitely pieces more than together.” Near the end of the visit, Borman sprayed a blue hydrating liquid to keep the cadavers from drying out and developing mold. He said everyone in Lining's group was respectful and asked great questions. “I’m pleased that we were able to make this happen. If she were interested in doing it again, I'd be open to doing it again.” Lining and her volunteers gave small gifts of gratitude to Borman and thanked him for his time. MMIW Search & Hope Alliance is preparing for two search efforts in the next few weeks. Jon Boutcher, Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, is asked about the arrest of Máire Mhic an Fhailí during a Policing Board meeting in September 2025. (Courtesy Policing Board / Facebook). An Irish language activist has won a landmark decision in Northern Ireland following her arrest during a protest. Seo McPolin has more from Ireland. Seventy-four-year-old grandmother Máire Mhic an Fhailí attended a peaceful protest in support of the Palestinian people last August in Belfast. She was among those arrested under the UK’s controversial Terrorism Laws because of her t-shirt. JJ Ó Dochartaigh from the Irish language band Kneecap wore the same T-shirt as Máire Mhic an Fhailí ahead of the band's 2025 Glastonbury set. (Courtesy Kneecap / X) During the arrest, English-speaking police officers were unable to understand her as she gave them her address – because she spoke in her Indigenous language of Irish. The Police Ombudsman ruled last week that the arresting officer should have taken reasonable steps to arrange a translation service – and that Mhic an Fhailí experienced “oppressive behavior”. The police watchdog also issued a policy recommendation for future engagements with Irish-language speakers. Mhic an Fhailí’s lawyer says this decision “puts a marker down” for how the police service must respect the Irish language moving forward. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. "Fighting Fit" For a little over a delicious decade the London band Gene put out four glorious albums. And since we're here and we have time, let me name them: Olympian, Drawn To The Deep End, Revelations and Libertine. From 1993 to 2004, the band's resume just kept building: They were on the cover of Melody Maker and the NME the latter of who also gave them the inaugural BRAT award for Best New Band, they headlined the Reading Festival, played Glastonbury, toured Europe, Japan and the U.S., logged top twenty singles, put out a killer live album called Rising For Sunset, sold hundreds of thousands of albums and played a legendary sold-out show with a full orchestra at London's Albert Hall. Behind the Welsh- born Martin Rossiter, Gene's crunchy blast of melodic muscle and poetic pounce made them one of the most unforgettable bands around but all good things come to an end and by 2004, the band called it a day. A one-off reunion in 2008 was the only blip on the Gene radar until now. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Olympian, in October of 2025 all four original members of Gene reconvened at the Apolo in London and blew the place apart and sounding positively ageless. What happened next? Well, fans wanted more so more was given in the form of 2026 March dates in Nottingham, Glasgow, Bristol, Dublin and Manchester. www.geneoffical.com (http://www.geneoffical.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Instagram + Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Rather than rushing to fix or label what's happening, they invite listeners to consider that heaviness may be a soul lesson — one that isn't meant to be solved, but felt and integrated.Through personal reflections, spiritual insight, and energetic awareness, this conversation looks at how transitions, soul contracts, and inner shifts can change the way love feels. They speak honestly about the pressure to analyse emotions, the discomfort of not having answers, and the power of presence during uncertain phases. This episode is a gentle reminder that not every phase of love requires action. On the latest episode of On The Record, Brian Wise and Michael Mackenzie ease into their weekly cultural ramble with the sombre news of Bob Weir's death—remembering an artist whose band (The Grateful Dead) they half‑followed but wholly respected. Weir, who died on January 10 at 78 (the same date as David Bowie's passing—coincidence or cosmic scheduling?), becomes the launchpad for a surprisingly affectionate exploration of Deadhead culture. Michael recalls the excellent Long Strange Trip documentary—long enough, Brian notes, to break a Melbourne Film Festival projector—and the pair marvel at the Grateful Dead's unique talent for turning concerts into economic ecosystems.  From there, the conversation pivots to David Bowie's The Final Act documentary (streaming on ABC), Crowded House opening the Australian Open (a first for tennis, apparently), and the AFL's ongoing failure to book local acts for the Grand Final. Why Snoop Dogg over Emma Donovan? Why not Troy Cassar-Daley? The hosts are baffled. Then there's Bluesfest's controversial booking of heavy metal act Parkway Drive, which has purists clutching their harmonicas. Festival director Peter Noble defends the choice, arguing you can't limit festivals by genre.  The episode meanders through Lucinda Williams' new album, Russell Crowe's Oscar-worthy turn in Nuremberg, and the existential challenges of songwriting. They talk about how unfamiliar it can feel when life becomes less intense, why stillness can feel uncomfortable, and how rest is not a setback but a vital part of spiritual embodiment. This conversation invites you to notice how far you've come, to release old identities built around constant healing, and to trust the phase you are currently in. A gentle guided process supports you in connecting with your present energy and recognising what is shifting within you.If you've been feeling tired, reflective, or unsure why things feel different, this episode offers reassurance, grounding, and permission to integrate rather than push forward.Key Themes✨ When growth no longer feels like healing ✨ Integration as a phase of spiritual maturity ✨ The power of rest and presence ✨ Letting go of old identities ✨ Community support during transitionsTakeaways✨ You don't always need to fix something to grow ✨ Integration is where healing becomes lived wisdom ✨ Rest can be productive and necessary ✨ Growth can feel quiet, unfamiliar, and expansive ✨ Being present allows deeper embodimentSound Bites✨ This is a lifelong journey ✨ What if healing is softening ✨ There's power in this momentAlso available to watch on YouTube. After receiving his first guitar at age 10, a determined Michael became self-taught with the help of his bedroom radio, spending days on end playing along with Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery and B.B. King records. After studying jazz guitar in high school, an impromptu backstage audition for George Clinton in 1974 earned 17-year-old Michael a seat on the Parliament mothership alongside the immortal Eddie Hazel, under the name “Kidd Funkadelic”. Hampton has spent the past half-century playing nearly 400 shows with the band, in 25 countries across 6 continents. Highlights include multiple appearances at world-renowned festivals like Montreux Jazz, Glastonbury, Reading, Woodstock '99, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock, and Isle of Wight, and venues like the Apollo Theater, The Fillmore, Royal Albert Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Troubadour, Red Rocks, The Beacon, and Sydney Opera House. Among Hampton's Funkadelic writing credits are group staples like “Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!” and “Funk Gets Stronger”, both released during the group's late- '70s/early-'80s hit run. His lead guitar is also embedded in the DNA of 90s hip-hop's G- Funk movement—Dr. Dre's “Let Me Ride” samples Parliament's “Mothership Connection”, Ice Cube's “Bop Gun” borrows elements of Funkadelic's “One Nation Under a Groove”, while De La Soul's “Me Myself and I”, Digital Underground's “Kiss You Back”, and Snoop Dogg's “What's My Name?” all draw from Funkadelic's “(Not Just) Knee Deep”. Michael's colleagues include George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Maceo Parker, Charlie Wilson, Dewayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, Fred Wesley & The JB's, Chuck Treece, Dean Ween, Primal Scream, Digital Underground, Too $hort, and Deee-Lite. Michael's contributions to the Parliament Funkadelic catalog have also influenced famed artists like Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Outkast, D'Angelo and Janelle Monáe, among many others. As of 2025, Michael has appeared on over 30 separate major label releases. Though best known for his role in the funk guitar pantheon, Hampton is also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, with drums, keys, and synth programming credits across the Parliament discography. She explains why blowing up earlier would have been too much for her, what it felt like going Number One with no money in her account, and how touring became relentless after B.O.T.A. Eliza opens up about burnout, losing her sound, chasing what she thought people expected, and stepping back to figure out what actually feels right.Who is Eliza Rose: Eliza Rose embodies the magic of UK underground club culture. The vocalist, producer, and DJ broke through globally with ‘B.O.T.A (Baddest Of Them All)', reaching Number One and becoming the first female DJ to top the official charts in 20 years, after years spent building her reputation across London's clubs, festivals, and record shops. Now with MOBO and Brit nominations, magazine covers, and a world tour, she moves seamlessly between the underground and global stage, collaborating with artists including Calvin Harris, Confidence Man, Carl Cox, The Trip, and Oppidan. Her DJ sets have reached major stages such as Glastonbury, Sonar, Love International, and Boiler Room, with upcoming appearances at Manchester's Warehouse Project and Homobloc, while she continues to grow her label Rosebud Records and champion her crate-digging roots, bringing her UKG sound to audiences worldwide.⏲ Follow Will Clarke ⏱https://djwillclarke.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OmOdgwIzub8DYPxQYbbbi?si=hEx8GCJAR3mhhhWd_iSuewhttps://www.instagram.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.facebook.com/willclarkedjhttps://twitter.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.tiktok.com/@djwillclarke Hosted on Acast. It marks the end of an extraordinary year which started in a very dark place, saw her die at least three times (according to social media), get lost flying over the Alps in a hot air balloon (it's a long story!) and get reinvented as the undisputed Queen of the Huns. When flags are being flown at Glastonbury featuring your name and face - you know you've become an icon. In this extremely honest interview Denise talks about the highs and lows of 2025, her love of reality TV, her flirtation with a pop career and why she things everything has suddenly come good for her. President Trump is literally tearing down the White House to build his fantasy ballroom, another Republican has been exposed for sending racist text messages and praising Nazis, and police in Alabama forcibly detained a 61 year-old woman who wore an inflatable penis costume to the “No Kings” rally. Stephen Colbert looks at the ways artificial intelligence companies are seeking to boost revenue as investors begin to worry that the A.I. stock bubble could burst. Big-screen legend Michael J. Fox tells Stephen that he's proud to leverage his celebrity status to be a representative for people afflicted with Parkinson's disease, especially when that means going up on stage to play guitar with Coldplay at the Glastonbury festival. Michael J. Fox's memoir, “Future Boy,” is available now.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire one person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world has the hustle and grit to deliver. My Guest: Helen Lewis is a staff writer at The Atlantic and author of The Genius Myth: Great Ideas Don't Come from Lone Geniuses.  Notes: Shakespeare: Talent + Luck + Timing - William Shakespeare died in 1616 at age 52, celebrated but not yet immortal. His icon status required massive luck: friends published the First Folio (saving King Lear), then 50 years later, Charles II reopened England's theaters after Puritan closures and needed content. Companies turned to Shakespeare's IP, adapting his work (including changing tragedies to happy endings). Helen: "If anyone deserves to be called a genius, it's him. But he died as a successful man of his age. Scenius Over Genius - Brian Eno coined "scenius" - places that are unusually productive and creative. Shakespeare moved from Warwickshire to London for the theaters and playwrights. Helen: "You don't just have to be Leonardo, you also need Florence... Where do you find the coolest, most interesting bleeding edge of your field?" Modern example: Joe Rogan's Comedy Mothership in Austin created an alternative to LA/NYC for comedians like Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe. Ryan: "Put yourself in rooms where you feel like the dumbest person... force you to rise up, think differently, work harder." Tim Berners-Lee vs. Elon Musk - Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. Has knighthood, lives an ordinary life, kids named Alice and Ben. Most people have never heard of him. Elon Musk has a lot of children, talks about his genes needing to live on, and lives a very public life. Helen: "We overrate the self-promoters, the narcissists. We demand oddness and specialness... We don't call modest people geniuses because they're too normal." Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos) and Sam Bankman-Fried (FTX) exploited this - looked like a genius (Steve Jobs cosplay, messy math prodigy) but stood on houses of cards. Trauma and the "I'll Show You" Engine - Matthew Parris wrote Fracture after noticing how many "great lives" had traumatic childhoods - loss of parents, being unloved, bullied. Helen: "I don't think that's necessarily genius in objective achievement. It's more like a hunger for recognition or fame... a kind of 'I'll show all of you' engine." Stephen Hawking on IQ - Stephen Hawking: "I have no idea. People who boast about their IQ are losers." The Flynn Effect shows average IQ rose over the 20th century through better nutrition, schooling, and living conditions. Higher IQ correlates with better outcomes. But at the top end, every IQ point ≠ is one success point. Christopher Langan (the highest IQ guy) thinks he has a theory to overturn Einstein, and that Bush did 9/11 to cover it up. No history of achievement. Helen: "Smart people don't always prosper. You need the gears that connect the engine to the wheels on the road." Conspiracy Theories: Narcissism as Driver - Narcissism is the most correlated personality trait with conspiracy thinking. Helen: "The sheeple, the NPCs think this, but I alone have seen the truth. It positions you as the protagonist of reality." The Internet is a "confirmation bias engine." But conspiracies are sometimes true (Epstein's corrupt plea deal), which is why conspiracy thinking persists. Researcher Karen Stenner's solution: Get back to depoliticized conspiracies like Bigfoot, crop circles, Area 51 - harmless things that got people outside instead of "shoot up a pizza restaurant." The Beatles: Finiteness Creates Legend - Psychologist Han Isaac said geniuses should either die before 30 or live past 80. Middle is "eh." The Beatles had both: a short career that ended definitively, then John Lennon was shot at 40, frozen in time. Paul McCartney lives on, performs at Glastonbury with John's vocals. Craig Brown: "The Rolling Stones just go on and on, but there's never as much of the Beatles as you want." Quality Over Quantity - Helen: "Incentive now is producing constantly for algorithms... That's neither fun nor produces the best work." Early career: say YES. Later career: "The most important thing you can say is no." Her metric: "Can I say honestly, that was the best I could do? I didn't cut corners. That's the metric." Podcast: advised to do 2-3 episodes weekly for rankings, has been doing weekly for 10.5 years. Shows that went daily? He stopped listening. "I'm gonna increase the quality bar, not the quantity." Robert Greene: "Do not speak unless you can improve upon the silence." Improving the Silence - "My dad's not the loudest at family gatherings, doesn't have the most words, but when he speaks, we all stop and listen. That's who you want to be." Applies to meetings: people vomit garbage to show how smart they are instead of waiting for something valuable. When you speak, people should want to listen. Thomas Edison: Execution Over Ideas - The Light bulb wasn't Edison's conceptual innovation - the idea dated to Humphrey Davy. What was incredible: Edison made it work (vacuum seal, filament) and created the New York power grid. Helen: "Lots of people can have the idea that a man should be an ant. Not everybody can write the Ant-Man screenplay and have it produced." His Menlo Park lab lasted because he worked with brilliant people on problems they cared about. Logbook shows assistants' names on breakthroughs - collaborative. We underrate logistics and execution. Most "light bulb moments" are actually slow, incremental, contested creations. Why Helen Chooses Teams Over Independence - Could go independent on Substack for more money. Works at The Atlantic for: resources, legal support, editorial integrity, and colleagues she doesn't want to let down. Helen: "You must have people in your life, you think, I wanna do work that they like. Finding those people who make you your best version of yourself." Ryan connects to athletics: "Being surrounded by people better than me forces me to raise my game. That's why we want to be part of a great team." Sample First, Specialize Later - High achievers have "hot streak" later, but sample early - trying different things, learning transferable skills. Helen: "Take the first job at a publication you could learn from. Even if not wildly interested, if it's good and they'll hold you to high standards, do it. Your second job is infinitely easier to get than your first." Work Around People Who Care - Helen: "If you work somewhere where no one cares, it's very hard. You can't care on your own. You'll become infected by the apathy around you." Nothing is more boring than a job you don't care about. Don't Wait to Live - Some devote long hours to something for money, promising they'll retire at 30 and then live. Helen: "What if you spent all that time chasing something and then you get hit by a truck? Don't wait for it. Just try and enjoy what you're doing right now." Quotes: "You don't just have to be Leonardo, you also need Florence."  "We overrate the self-promoters and underrate the humble achievers."  "Smart people don't always prosper. You need the gears that connect the engine to the wheels."  "The most important thing you can say is no."  "Do not speak unless you can improve upon the silence." - Robert Greene "You can't care on your own. You'll become infected by the apathy around you."  It's funny that we have come to use the phrase ‘lightbulb moment' to describe a momentary flash of inspiration, because the birth of the lightbulb was slow, incremental, and highly contested.
