Rapper Professor Green joins James Smith for an unfiltered conversation about the problem with fame, the illusion of success and the hidden loneliness behind recognition. From growing up in Hackney to playing Glastonbury, Professor Green reveals how fame promised to fix everything… and nearly broke him instead. They dive into the darker side of success, the pressure to perform, the loss of privacy and the mental health toll of living as a public persona. Green opens up about his late autism and ADHD diagnosis, the self-sabotage of success and learning to rebuild a life grounded in honesty, fatherhood and self-awareness rather than applause. He explains: ◼️ Why fame magnifies your problems instead of solving them ◼️ How childhood trauma shapes ambition and anxiety ◼️ The reality of addiction, ego, and escapism in celebrity culture ◼️ Why becoming a dad finally made him stop performing ◼️ How self-understanding saved his life Learn more about your ad choices. This week's guest is very grounded. That could be because he's British. Or it could be because his career spans several decades. Welcome the singer and guitarist for Kula Shaker, Crispian Mills. This episode is so interesting. Crispian talks about growing up in a family rooted in entertainment. He started playing gigs in pubs at a pretty young age. In fact, his first gig was with Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. But success wasn't instant. He reveals how one of his earliest pub gigs didn't go over so well.  He played with friend and former podcast guest Lora Logic in the reformed version of X-Ray Spex. And when you give it a listen, you can tell it's him. Crispian talks about forming Kula Shaker and why he became the singer. I learn the truth about Cricklewood, the wild success of the band's debut album, K, and how it affected the band. It probably didn't help that they headlined Glastonbury twice in one weekend. It was due to Neil Young's finger injury, but it still means that Sting opened for Kula Shaker once. The band broke up and reformed. Crispian talks about life during the gap and how the band reformed. They've been expanding their sound ever since and have just recently released one of their best tracks ever. Look for a new album soon. Follow them @kulashakerofficial on Instagram. Check out their new music at kulashaker.co.uk, on Spotify or wherever you get new music. British Airways has paused its sponsorship of The Louis Theroux Podcast following an interview with Bob Vylan's frontman. Pascal Robinson-Foster, one half of the controversial punk duo, told Theroux in an episode which aired a few days ago that he was "not regretful" of chanting "death, death to the IDF " at this year's Glastonbury music festival. He added that he would "do it again, twice on Sundays." British Airways said on Saturday that the content "breaches" its sponsorship policy and has since paused its advertising on the podcast. Meanwhile, there is pressure from the Jewish community and elsewhere on the BBC to withdraw its support for the Louis Theroux Podcast after he referred in the podcast interview to Zionism as "a form of white supremacy." We've heard about the placebo effect, when belief in a treatment makes us feel better, but what do you know about the nocebo effect? It's when our negative expectations of a treatment, medicine or procedure - or even mistrust of our health care services - can actually make us feel worse. And it's a growing area of scientific research.A landmark change to the Family Courts has been announced today - the court will no longer work on the presumption that having contact with both parents is in the best interest of the child. Domestic abuse campaigners have said the move will save children's lives. Claire Throssel MBE is one of the campaigners who has driven this change. In October 2014 her two sons, Jack, who was 12 and Paul, who was nine, were deliberately killed by their father. He had been awarded five hours weekly access to the boys despite Claire's warnings that he was a danger to them. Earlier this month, for the first time, every match across England's top two tiers of women's football was photographed exclusively by female photographers. So how important is it that breakthrough moments in women's sport are captured and told through the eyes of women? Eileen Langsley is a pioneering sports photographer who has captured moments from some of the world's biggest sporting events over the last five decades, and Morgan Harlow was part of the all-female photography team for the Women's Super League.Long queues for the toilets are something women are very used to, whilst often watching the men dash in and out quickly. Amber Probyn and Hazel McShane are two women who are trying to resolve this issue, having invented flat packed ‘female urinals,' which have already been deployed at Glastonbury and the London Marathon. They've just secured almost £1m investment, enabling them to take their invention around the world.

This video is a conversation with Charlie Hooper-Williams, a composer, pianist, and software developer, who shares insights on his creative process, live performances, the classical music world, and the impact of AI on art.Key Discussion Points* Background and Work* Charlie Hooper-Williams is a composer, pianist, and software developer who was part of the team that created the music identification app, Shazam [00:02].* He defines his musical style as part of the "post-classical," "indie classical," or "neo-classical" movement, focusing on creating music that connects emotionally with the audience [02:48].* He studied piano performance as an undergraduate at Northwestern [03:11].* Live Performances and Technology* He currently performs solo on a portable acoustic piano and utilizes a unique live visual system that he coded himself [00:18].* The system listens to what he plays and creates real-time visuals ( [19:54] ) projected onto a screen and six light towers [19:06].* His shows vary, ranging from small, intimate village halls to large festivals like Glastonbury [25:50]. He also enjoys performing in movie theaters, utilizing the massive screen and quality sound [33:49].* The Creative Process* He discusses the idea that no art is wholly new; a composer is a "sum of everything you've ever heard and done and seen" [10:09]. The artist's job is to digest those influences so that the final product is truly their own [10:24].* He finds the process of writing music includes phases of feeling his work is "terrible" ( [06:07] ), a common experience for creatives, which is why he values creative peers and mentors [07:27].* The World of Classical Music* He believes that post-World War II academic music created a split by prioritizing music that was difficult and experimental over music that was entertaining and connected with a general audience [03:06:01].* He is excited by contemporary composers like Caroline Shaw, who are experimental but still "fun and exciting" [38:43].* AI in Music* He finds AI to be a helpful tool for things like summarizing and grant applications ( [43:25] ), but he maintains a strong critical judgment when using it [42:56].* He is not yet impressed by AI-generated music ( [45:40] ) and speculates that the future will see a split between easily-generated AI background music and human-made art that people actively listen to for the sake of human-to-human connection [46:32].RecommendationsCharlie Hooper-Williams recommends the following post-classical artists:* Nils Frahm [51:22]* Poppy Ackroyd* Olafur Arnalds* Max RichterYou can find his music and updates by searching his name or visiting his website, charliehooperwilliams.com [51:55].

Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire one person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world has the hustle and grit to deliver. My Guest: Helen Lewis is a staff writer at The Atlantic and author of The Genius Myth: Great Ideas Don't Come from Lone Geniuses.  Notes: Shakespeare: Talent + Luck + Timing - William Shakespeare died in 1616 at age 52, celebrated but not yet immortal. His icon status required massive luck: friends published the First Folio (saving King Lear), then 50 years later, Charles II reopened England's theaters after Puritan closures and needed content. Companies turned to Shakespeare's IP, adapting his work (including changing tragedies to happy endings). Helen: "If anyone deserves to be called a genius, it's him. But he died as a successful man of his age. Scenius Over Genius - Brian Eno coined "scenius" - places that are unusually productive and creative. Shakespeare moved from Warwickshire to London for the theaters and playwrights. Helen: "You don't just have to be Leonardo, you also need Florence... Where do you find the coolest, most interesting bleeding edge of your field?" Modern example: Joe Rogan's Comedy Mothership in Austin created an alternative to LA/NYC for comedians like Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe. Ryan: "Put yourself in rooms where you feel like the dumbest person... force you to rise up, think differently, work harder." Tim Berners-Lee vs. Elon Musk - Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. Has knighthood, lives an ordinary life, kids named Alice and Ben. Most people have never heard of him. Elon Musk has a lot of children, talks about his genes needing to live on, and lives a very public life. Helen: "We overrate the self-promoters, the narcissists. We demand oddness and specialness... We don't call modest people geniuses because they're too normal." Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos) and Sam Bankman-Fried (FTX) exploited this - looked like a genius (Steve Jobs cosplay, messy math prodigy) but stood on houses of cards. Trauma and the "I'll Show You" Engine - Matthew Parris wrote Fracture after noticing how many "great lives" had traumatic childhoods - loss of parents, being unloved, bullied. Helen: "I don't think that's necessarily genius in objective achievement. It's more like a hunger for recognition or fame... a kind of 'I'll show all of you' engine." Stephen Hawking on IQ - Stephen Hawking: "I have no idea. People who boast about their IQ are losers." The Flynn Effect shows average IQ rose over the 20th century through better nutrition, schooling, and living conditions. Higher IQ correlates with better outcomes. But at the top end, every IQ point ≠ is one success point. Christopher Langan (the highest IQ guy) thinks he has a theory to overturn Einstein, and that Bush did 9/11 to cover it up. No history of achievement. Helen: "Smart people don't always prosper. You need the gears that connect the engine to the wheels on the road." Conspiracy Theories: Narcissism as Driver - Narcissism is the most correlated personality trait with conspiracy thinking. Helen: "The sheeple, the NPCs think this, but I alone have seen the truth. It positions you as the protagonist of reality." The Internet is a "confirmation bias engine." But conspiracies are sometimes true (Epstein's corrupt plea deal), which is why conspiracy thinking persists. Researcher Karen Stenner's solution: Get back to depoliticized conspiracies like Bigfoot, crop circles, Area 51 - harmless things that got people outside instead of "shoot up a pizza restaurant." The Beatles: Finiteness Creates Legend - Psychologist Han Isaac said geniuses should either die before 30 or live past 80. Middle is "eh." The Beatles had both: a short career that ended definitively, then John Lennon was shot at 40, frozen in time. Paul McCartney lives on, performs at Glastonbury with John's vocals. Craig Brown: "The Rolling Stones just go on and on, but there's never as much of the Beatles as you want." Quality Over Quantity - Helen: "Incentive now is producing constantly for algorithms... That's neither fun nor produces the best work." Early career: say YES. Later career: "The most important thing you can say is no." Her metric: "Can I say honestly, that was the best I could do? I didn't cut corners. That's the metric." Podcast: advised to do 2-3 episodes weekly for rankings, has been doing weekly for 10.5 years. Shows that went daily? He stopped listening. "I'm gonna increase the quality bar, not the quantity." Robert Greene: "Do not speak unless you can improve upon the silence." Improving the Silence - "My dad's not the loudest at family gatherings, doesn't have the most words, but when he speaks, we all stop and listen. That's who you want to be." Applies to meetings: people vomit garbage to show how smart they are instead of waiting for something valuable. When you speak, people should want to listen. Thomas Edison: Execution Over Ideas - The Light bulb wasn't Edison's conceptual innovation - the idea dated to Humphrey Davy. What was incredible: Edison made it work (vacuum seal, filament) and created the New York power grid. Helen: "Lots of people can have the idea that a man should be an ant. Not everybody can write the Ant-Man screenplay and have it produced." His Menlo Park lab lasted because he worked with brilliant people on problems they cared about. Logbook shows assistants' names on breakthroughs - collaborative. We underrate logistics and execution. Most "light bulb moments" are actually slow, incremental, contested creations. Why Helen Chooses Teams Over Independence - Could go independent on Substack for more money. Works at The Atlantic for: resources, legal support, editorial integrity, and colleagues she doesn't want to let down. Helen: "You must have people in your life, you think, I wanna do work that they like. Finding those people who make you your best version of yourself." Ryan connects to athletics: "Being surrounded by people better than me forces me to raise my game. That's why we want to be part of a great team." Sample First, Specialize Later - High achievers have "hot streak" later, but sample early - trying different things, learning transferable skills. Helen: "Take the first job at a publication you could learn from. Even if not wildly interested, if it's good and they'll hold you to high standards, do it. Your second job is infinitely easier to get than your first." Work Around People Who Care - Helen: "If you work somewhere where no one cares, it's very hard. You can't care on your own. You'll become infected by the apathy around you." Nothing is more boring than a job you don't care about. Don't Wait to Live - Some devote long hours to something for money, promising they'll retire at 30 and then live. Helen: "What if you spent all that time chasing something and then you get hit by a truck? Don't wait for it. Just try and enjoy what you're doing right now." Quotes: "You don't just have to be Leonardo, you also need Florence."  "We overrate the self-promoters and underrate the humble achievers."  "Smart people don't always prosper. You need the gears that connect the engine to the wheels."  "The most important thing you can say is no."  "Do not speak unless you can improve upon the silence." - Robert Greene "You can't care on your own. You'll become infected by the apathy around you."  It's funny that we have come to use the phrase ‘lightbulb moment' to describe a momentary flash of inspiration, because the birth of the lightbulb was slow, incremental, and highly contested.

Marina Abramović is the self proclaimed ‘grandmother of performance art'. Her latest work, a reimagining of Slavic fertility rites, opened in Manchester earlier this week. Notorious for committing extreme acts to her body, the Serbian first achieved fame with her “Rhythm 0” performance, where she stood still in a room and invited guests to do anything they liked to her. They removed her clothes, cut her neck and held a loaded gun to her head. Many of her biggest works were made in collaboration with German artist Ulay, her one-time romantic partner. They ended their relationship in 1988 by walking from opposite ends of the Great Wall of China and meeting in the middle. In 2010, she received international acclaim for her performance The Artist is Present. It saw her sit in a chair for eight hours a day, 6 days a week for three months. She invited anyone to sit across from her. It famously ended with Abramović reuniting with Ulay. Mark Coles looks back at her career. What does it really take to be oversubscribed—to have more demand than supply, on purpose? In this deep-dive with bestselling author and entrepreneur Daniel Priestley, we unpack the strategy behind creating demand-and-supply tension, building “with or without you” energy, and designing an official capacity that protects your customer experience (and your margins). We cover why great brands market before they launch, how to collect signals not sales (waitlists, applications, discussions) to manufacture demand ethically, and the four-phase cadence—planning, build-up, transparency, release—that turns interest into sold-out outcomes. Daniel breaks down niche vs luxury, pricing power (Rolex vs airlines), why “sold out” is a feature, not a bug, and how many businesses would earn more with fewer customers by focusing on the 10% who hold 60% of the spend. You'll hear real examples (Glastonbury registrations, Ferrari applications, CrossFit communities, Esther Perel's premium positioning), plus practical math for working backwards from your ideal year to the conversations you need to create. We also hit mindset: redefining success across life stages, leading with integrity, and running campaigns a few times a year instead of marketing 24/7. If you want to launch better, price smarter, and create demand that lasts—this one's for you. About Daniel Priestley:Daniel Priestley is an entrepreneur, investor, and bestselling author whose books—including Key Person of Influence, Oversubscribed, and 24 Assets—have shaped how founders position, price, and grow. Longtime listeners of our show know that The Wolf is an unabashed American Oasis fan. Though he wasn't onboard from the jump, once he discovered the melodies and lyrics of Noel Gallagher, he became a true believer ready to fly the Oasis flag in an attempt to convert more US fans. But Oasis were more of a phenomenon in the UK thanks to a new liberal government, the rise of Brit Pop and Cool Britannia while they were just a couple of foul-mouthed heathens against the grunge-dominated US. However, their 2nd album, What's The Story Morning Glory, is one of the best selling records in the history of the UK and did enjoy strong success in the US. From the opening track Hello (a great way to start an album and concert) to the light and popular Champagne Supernova, Oasis created a juggernaut that was ready to explode after the success of their debut, Definitely Maybe. And while Some Might Say and Don't Look Back in Anger would go on to be the first two #1 hits for the band in the UK, while Wonderwall would become known as one of the biggest pop/rock songs in UK history, you can't tell the full story of the album without the b-sides. Made during the heyday of CDs and CD singles, everytime the band released a new single they gave their fans 4 songs - basically an EP every couple of months. Included in these releases are some amazing songs like Acquiesce (perhaps the greatest b-side of all time), Talk Tonight, Rocking Chair, Masterplan and an amazing version of Cum on Feel The Noize. The 2014 re-release captures all those songs and more and is highly recommended by The Wolf to stream or buy. Obviously Noel Gallagher went through an incredibly creative period using different styles like the hard rocking Morning Glory, fun and jangling She's Electric, and foot stomping Roll With It. On their current world reunion tour, they play 8 songs off the album and 3 more b-sides from the era. Their epic performance at Glastonbury reflected how far the band had come in 2 short years from just learning the songs to being the biggest rock band on the planet. As it turns 30 and the boys are out on their victory lap tour, we take some time to dial into all the songs, the difference between their success in the UK vs the US and ponder what the future might hold for the brothers Gallagher. Opiuo is a genre-bending plethora of auditory and visual masterclasses. Born in 1984 in rural New Zealand, his parents provided the land upon which music festivals were held. This extremely formative growth surrounded by the early incarnations of Aotearoa's electronic music scene exposed him to the celebration of life through self-expression, dance, and giant sound systems. These experiences shaped so much of who he is & what he stands for today. Positivity and movement at the core of the project, his music is an infectious electronic based blend of funk, soul, psychedelia, and booty-shaking bass.  Now calling Australia home, Oscar tours his party-starting music throughout the globe. Having spent more than a decade performing at some of the world's most renowned festivals and venues including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and Coachella, as well as selling out Colorado's famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre multiple times, he's performed his music in an unimaginably large array of formats. From self-built Orchestras, to collaborating with symphony choirs, touring his own Opiuo Band, and as an immersive solo audio & visual show, his live creativity is limitless. Taking home the New Zealand Music Award for Best Electronic Album in 2014, his catalogue is vast. Having released 6 full-length albums, 10 EPs, and a myriad of singles and remixes over the last 14 years. In his own words, he is still "just getting started!". Opiuo Links   Mr. Bill Links

The only catch? She hasn't finished the album yet. “The album is not done,” admits Raye. “But I've announced it. You know what? Sometimes you need to put a deadline. So, that's happening.” With her album deadline fast approaching, Raye gets candid with Chioma about how the discovery of her bob hair cut helped her find confidence as an artist and how she wants to take more risks with fashion in the next chapter of her music career. “I think I'm finally in the place where I'm ready to like push things a little bit in the fashion sense, whereas before it's very much been like comfort,” says Raye, “ I think I'm now in a place where I'm like, ‘Let's go!'”The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. In the old towns and villages of Britain, before the police, before the tabloids, before social media shame-storms, there were other ways to deal with those who stepped outside the rules. Noisy ways. Cruel ways. Dangerous ways - the 'Rough Music' rituals — part punishment, part performance, part pagan magic — at the dark edge where community, cruelty and celebration collide. Liz Williams, the Glastonbury-based author, folklorist and pagan, came to the Bureau to talk about them.  Her latest book Rough Music: Folk Tradition, Transgression and Alternative Britain, explores often violent, forgotten traditions of noise, mockery, and ritual humiliation — and how they ripple forward into today's counterculture, protest movements, and online doxing.   And we hear about some other, less cruel, but deeply strange British rituals that cling on: the annual Cheese-Rolling at Cooper's Hill, The Burryman's Parade in Scotland and the yearly Shin Kicking competition in the Cotswolds..      #folklore #tradition #albion #cruelty #shaming #doxing #skimmington #roughmusic #counterculture

In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger tells us about how two journals kept by a Revolutionary War-era girl in the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History's  collection have inspired an original work of music.    Several years ago, Leonard Raybon (Associate Professor of Music at Tulane University) encountered two journals and other writings by Hannah Hadassah Hickok, held at the Connecticut Museum. Hannah was the matriarch of the non-conformist Smith Family of Glastonbury. Her daughters would go on to became nationally famous for protesting their lack of voting rights in the 1870s by refusing to pay their taxes — an act that resulted in the town of Glastonbury confiscating their property, including their beloved cows.   Inspired by the young Hannah's unique voice, Leonard composed an original mini-musical based on her writings. You'll hear Natalie and Leonard's conversation about what moved him to compose the piece and how it fits into his larger project of producing "Ameri-musicals" that use song to get us to think about the past.   Professor Raybon, the Connecticut Museum, and the Glastonbury Historical Society are partnering to present this work to the public in a one-time performance on November 8th, 2025 at 7:00 pm at First Church of Glastonbury at 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury. First Church was the Smith family's congregation, so it's a fitting place to host this unique musical experience! You can visit the CT Museum's website to learn more about the concert.   For more information on the Smith family, visit the CT Women's Hall of Fame, or read this excellent blog from the Library of Congress.    -------------------------------------- Like Grating the Nutmeg?
