This is a preview of The Weekender edition of the Muckrake Podcast. Please go to our Patreon to gain access to the regular Weekender episodes on Fridays. Co-hosts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman discuss the sad departure of Elon Musk from government, as he'd apparently had enough corruption for one political cycle. We also got a glimpse of how lonely and dysfunctional the male population is, particularly when the Democrats want to fund a $20 million study on them. Even Don Bongino is having a rough go of it. It also turns out that Qatari plane wasn't a free gift to Trump after all. Go figure. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Nick Hauselman is busy hosting people for Memorial Day, so a beleaguered and sick Jared Yates Sexton holds down the fort. Lost my motivation after all the discussion at NoCKRs. Plus I listened to the latest episode of Yarniacs where they discussed Sharlene's Weekender. Didn't inspire me. Socks: Wisdom Yarns Wacki Saki in the colorway Batty Berlin. Almost done with the leg of the second sock. Spinning: Into the Whirled roving in colorways Welcome to Litchfield and The Traveler. I've finished the two singles and have plied one bobbin. Have a little over 300 yards. Started plying second bobbin. Weaving Studio: It's a work in progress. I think I have finally fixed the problem with the brake band falling off. Kelly's Projects Two more hats (both using a turquoise DK) went to the free table at school. I haven't checked back to see if they are gone, but the day after I put them there it was in the high 70s. So I switched to Izzy doll bears for my next skein of retreat spirit yarn. It's a taupe brown color. Started another chenille rug warp for making the chenille “caterpillar strips.” As I was about half done I looked in the trunk and found some other spirit yarn I had intended to use for the strips. I used some, but I might have yet another warp of strips to make. I have a lot of weaving spirit yarn. Finished a third bobbin of spirit roving from Pat. Still need to ply it to get the wheels empty and ready for the spin in. Gray Corriedale x Merino fiber that is beautifully prepared (Morro Fleeceworks). Shari is still processing fleeces. She is selling the mill but it hasn't sold yet. Also there is a new fiber mill opening. News from Knitadmin Mary is that there is a new small-batch custom wool and fiber mill coming soon to Northern California, Siren Song Fleeceworks. Meredith will be accepting fleeces for custom processing at Fiber Frolic in Vacaville on June 7th. She will also be vending at Lambtown the first weekend in October. Winter Weave Along The WWAL has ended. In the thread we had 55 projects linked, 184 pictures, 881 posts, 37 voices, 152 readers. We announced prizes for six lucky weavers. Summer Spin In Now until September 1. All spinning and making with handspun yarn counts. Preparing fleeces also counts. Let's go!
Recorded during the early hours of Sunday morning at Garage Noord at the Omen Wapta Weekender, this live set from Formant Value captures the essence of a weekend that transcended the club experience—where sound, space, and shared energy merged into something truly transformative. Opening in slow motion, the set unfolds with a deep, psychedelic ambient current—echoes, pulses, and dub textures forming a wide sonic horizon. What follows is a steady, organic rise into tribal techno rhythms and hi-tech structures, maintaining a sense of spaciousness even at its most kinetic. It's a set that mirrors the architecture of the night itself: meditative, then elevating, then dissolving again. There are no sharp corners—just flow. Time felt suspended. Movement turned internal. And in the foggy warmth of the dancefloor, listeners were gently guided through a collective dreamspace. Formant Value is known for his unique & sophisticated sound, that defies easy categorisation whilst nodding in the direction of downtempo, dub and IDM, with elements of D'n'B, trance and techno. His music has been released by a number of labels including Lowless Records, Well Street Records, Rgd tribe and Annulled Music. Adept at sustaining the fine tension between dancefloor energy and audiophile precision of intent home listening, Formant Value brings a uniquely fresh take on contemporary club music. The increased risks of recession and signs of significant disruptions in the goods market have likely played a role in getting the US to back off its draconian trade war policies, culminating this week in a substantial markdown in the tariff on China. We no longer see a US recession as likely but still see growth being weak over the rest of the year and also note downside risks if the trade war re-escalates. Meanwhile, Trump accepts a $400 million jet from Qatar as if it's not corruption at its highest level. Arizona senator Ruben Gallego inserts himself into a possible presidential run, which would tilt the Democratic party farther right (ugh), and cancel culture clearly has a shelf life as disgraced former New York governor Andrew Cuomo is a front runner to become Manhattan's next mayor. The hard activity data continue to show resilient growth in the first four months of the year. We maintain our recession call owing to 1) front-loading that will impart a drag going forward, 2) material trade war drags that will further damp activity, and 3) sentiment that is falling sharply and risks becoming a drag on its own. Trade war news this week does not move the needle in our view. The Fed is equally balanced on rising risks to both sides of its dual mandate and unlikely to act absent a break in the data. Bruce Kasman and Joe Lupton discuss how the activity data continues to show resilience, an encouraging development that will help weather the coming US policy storm. Whether it is enough to support the transition to the trade war is the central question. Regardless, even absent recession, the risk of an extended period of soft growth should also be a concern. One factor underlying this risk is a lack of potential policy offsets, particularly in the US where the Fed is likely to remain on extended hold. This podcast was recorded on May 2, 2025. The hard data continue to highlight strength but it increasingly looks like we are reaching peak front-loading. The survey data are falling faster and point to a material deceleration. Whether this turns to recession will depend on the degree to which the US backpedals its war on trade. Beyond any near-term outcome, the risk is that the dismantling of the global trading order will do permanent damage. Speakers: Bruce Kasman Joseph Lupton This podcast was recorded on 25 April 2025. Bruce Kasman is joined by Joe Lupton and Jahangir Aziz to discuss the post-Liberation Day back-peddling that has led some to breathe a sigh of relief. Not us. A 10% universal tax is still a very large shock (7.5x the 2018-19 trade war) and the huge 145% tax (and rising) on China is prohibitive. Co-hosts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman discuss how the markets were roiled as we all realized Donald Trump was actually going to go through with it. Their math wasn't math-ing as they came up with a ridiculous formula for each country, and the gross incompetence continues. Wisconsin elected a new Supreme Court justice and it just might have led to the beginning of Elon Musk's departure in an official role at the White House. Meanwhile, Senator Corey Booker made a stand on the Senate floor, eclipsing the record for longest speech and perhaps dropping a gauntlet for the Democrats Learn more about your ad choices. Co-hosts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman discuss Donald Trump's latest interview where he called Kristin Welker and boasted about his 3rd term in office. Oh, he also talked about attacking Iran if they don't sign a nuclear deal that they had already agreed to. Co-hosts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman must deal with incompetency on a level never before seen as the National Security Advisor inadvertently added Editor In Chief of The Atlantic Jeffrey Goldberg to a top secret, high level chat about their Mardis Gras plans- I mean, the strategic war plans to attack the Houthis in the Middle East. Donald Trump is so concerned that he wasn't even briefed, as he was too busy complaining about a portrait of himself in Colorado and demanding an apology from the Governor of Maine. They finish on Columbia University utter capitulation to Trump to get their $400 million federal pittance back.
