Send us a textIn this Christmas Eve Embercast, Chasity and Scott slow things down with a short, informal episode focused on listener feedback, community connection, and the continued growth of the fire investigation profession. Rather than a full-length case discussion, this Ember-style episode highlights messages from investigators around the world—including Australia—and explores meaningful conversations sparked by listener questions, critiques, and ideas. Topics include a listener-requested concept for a wildfire investigation roundtable series, advice for investigators preparing for the IAAI CFI certification exam, and a discussion on the difference between studying for a test and conducting real-world research. The episode also addresses a technical terminology correction—“arc” versus “arc site”—and why precision in language matters in both investigations and the courtroom. Chasity and Scott reflect on the importance of collaboration between public and private fire investigators, introduce a new 2025 segment titled “Here's the Scenario—Figure It Out,” and discuss why NFPA 921 should be viewed as a framework rather than a standalone research document. The Embercast closes with shoutouts to fellow fire investigation podcasts helping move the industry forward and a holiday message to listeners. Full episodes return January 7.

By David Stephen What is the common denominator in all love scenarios? What does it mean that an individual is so in love, but others find it strange? How do long distance relationships compare to the recent phenomenon of AI girlfriends and AI boyfriends? What also does it mean that an individual fell into a romance scam, in the digital age? AI Girlfriends, AI Boyfriends and Romance Scams? Mind and Love What is the miracle of the human mind? It is the different directions that things can go, to result in the same end. For example, assuming love is a destination in the mind, there can be several routes from which the destination is reached. This is a reason, for example, that an individual can have the experience of love off different sources, say for loved ones, career, hobbies and so forth. Also, the mind can vary, where interest in a moment is different from the next or not as intense as the last and so on. The mind is not just about the parallels, for example, to be cold when it is cold or to be hot when it is, but sometimes to have contrasts, because something else might be dominant on the mind. The human mind is quite varied. Some changes are instant, some take time, but there is possibility of change. There are some sequences [new or old] before some destinations. There are others without those, so, sometimes, changes happen without a reason. There are destinations in the mind that may not be likely, directly until something else goes to another destination. There are some destinations in some minds that make likelihoods different for people. However, the components of mind, their stations and relays are similar and are important to explain and explore, with the rise of AI girlfriends, AI boyfriends and AI companions. AI Artificial intelligence is a technology that would hold a mirror to humanity like nothing has ever done before. It would show that a lot of problems can be traced back to the human mind, not just the facilities involved. Some people are wondering why anyone would fall for an AI lover. The simple answer is that it gets to the destination of love in the mind, even if the usual route or sequence - a fellow human - was absent. Although it is known that humans have used language, actions, decoys and so forth to get love, partnerships and companionship, AI, as it is, already has access to choice spots in the human mind. So, a vulnerability is the human mind. This can also be extended to romance scams. Some people wonder, how does anyone fall for a romance scam? One vulnerability too, is the human mind. Romance Scam There is a recent [November 29, 2025] report on CNN, A stranger messaged him on Facebook. It was the start of a nightmare that cost him $280,000, stating that, "By February, they'd declared their love for each other. But what seemed like a whirlwind romance now appears like a scheme to lure Novak into a fake crypto investment. By April this year, he'd funneled $280,000 - almost his entire life savings - to an investment site she recommended. And the woman, along with her Facebook profile, vanished not long after. A tech executive with a deep computer background, Novak helped his company recover from a ransomware attack that wiped out its entire system. He finds it hard to believe now that he fell for the scam." The Human Mind One thing that might be important in the future, is what is called mind safety displays, for digital-based relationships and others. This means that for communications and actions, it is possible to check where it might be going in the mind, to ensure that the mind does not fall to unwanted destinations. Also, in a marriage, or relationship, with love, what can be done to protect against heartbreak, especially if the minds of both people are not in the same place and one is more into it than the other person? How can a display show, to ensure that it is easier to come to terms with that reality? How is it possible to measure the human mind, for mental health and other states...

In this annual reflection episode, I sit down with WOMENdontDOthat co-founder and former host, Myrrhanda Novak, to look back on 2025 and talk about what is ahead for the podcast and blog. We begin with what life looks like for Myrrhanda right now, including the upcoming tenth birthday of her son Brody, who passed away. She shares honestly about how this milestone feels heavier and how important it is to be gentle with yourself when grief comes in waves. We talk through the best risks we took this year. For Myrrhanda, it was joining a gym for the first time, redoing their backyard and trying new recipes. For me, it was welcoming a friend to live with us for part of the year, getting out more, gardening, boxing and finding pieces of myself again. We also share the things that scared us this year, like being a conference panelist or trying boxing and even dog sledding. Our words for the year were brave for Myrrhanda and focus for me.We also celebrate meaningful moments from 2025 including girls trips to Montreal and Quebec City, a castle wedding in Scotland, my daughter starting high school, Beacon North turning five and reaching 200 podcast episodes.Your top picks from the year:Most listened to episode: Leadership, Loss and the Courage to Keep Showing Up (Episode 196)Episodes I hope you revisit: Camryn Rogers Olympic journey (Episode 182) and Bella Brave's story with Kyla Thomson (Episode 185)Most read blog: Dancing Through Time: What a Castle Wedding in Scotland Taught MeMyrrhanda's favourite episode: Make It Stick with Katie Faloon DrewLooking ahead to 2026, you can expect vault episodes over Christmas, more of the topics you tell us you want and conversations with Selena Rezvani on quick leadership and Catherine McKenna on her book Run Like a Girl. The squad investigates the case of a dead woman found with hundred dollar bills shoved in her mouth. Detectives Benson and Stabler learn the woman was an undocumented worker at a woman's sex club. A community activist (Rita Moreno) tells the detectives 16 undocumented women have been attacked by the same rapist - but none will report the crimes for fear of deportation. When Serbian refugee Nina gives Olivia the cash her attacker left, they link a fingerprint to an attorney (Bradley Cooper) who handles the estate for socialite Eleanor Duvall (Angela Lansbury, in an Emmy-nominated performance). Elliot suspects her oddball son Gabriel (Alfred Molina) is the rapist, but the victim is mysteriously detained before she can make an identification.ADA Casey Novak stops Nina's deportation so she can testify against Duvall. As she prepares for trial, an assailant disguised as a flower delivery man beats Casey up in her office. Stabler accuses Duvall, but the attacker is actually Nina's religiously conservative brother, incensed that Novak has let the world know his sister is no longer a virgin. The assault on the prosecutor complicates the case, so DA Arthur Branch gives it to ADA Tracey Kibre (Bebe Neuwirth) for a trial by jury. We're talking about Special Victims Unit season six episode 20 "Night," the first part of a crossover episode with Law & Order: Trial by Jury season one episode 11 "Day." In this episode, Sharona and Boz follow up on episode 121 and sit down with Dr. Sharon Stranford, Professor of Biology at Pomona College, to explore her journey from traditional grading toward ungrading and collaborative grading in STEM. Sharon shares how her experiences as a first-generation college student, a long-time practitioner of just-in-time teaching, and a pandemic-era educator led her to reimagine how feedback, mastery, and motivation intersect in the science classroom. She explains how she replaced numbers and letters with meaningful dialogue, feedback, and self-assessment, helping students shift from “What's my grade?” to “What have I learned?” Along the way, she describes how personal goals, SMART reflections, and one-on-one mastery conversations help students develop agency and persistence—while also transforming the teacher–student relationship.LinksPlease note - any books linked here are likely Amazon Associates links. You’re gonna make a deal with this diabolical pod description?
The other day I found myself walking through a parking garage stairwell in Iowa City, and I realized they were using the same scent design as the local mall in Bratislava where we used to live. Half-shocked, half-amused, I climbed the cement stairs as I remembered riding the escalator through the same subtle scent cloud two years ago. The memory was visceral. Though we don't always think about it, our sensory experiences have a strong impact on how we feel and how we work. I do my best work in a situation where I feel comfortable. In fact, I generally prefer not to work at home because step one, for me, to working at home is often to clean the entire house, put music on, light a candle, pick flowers, make tea, etc. and so I spent an hour prepping to work before I do anything. I bet you've already put considerable time and effort into making your classroom a space where you feel comfortable and where students feel welcome. Today isn't about changing any of that; it's just about finding small places where you might be able to tune your sensory dashboard in class to make it work even better for you and your kiddos. By thinking specifically about the five senses - just like we have students do in their writing - you can find easy wins to make the workspace more welcoming, energizing, and comfortable for everyone inside. Evangelism often gains momentum in unexpected moments—when tragedy strikes, when the world loses someone influential, or when bold voices challenge the church to act. In recent months, we've seen something remarkable: people stirred by loss, conviction, and opportunity, turning back to the urgency of the gospel. On today's show, we're joined once again by Pastor Dylan Novak—known by many as The Celebrity Evangelist—to talk about how God has been moving in powerful ways during the tenth year of his ministry. From doors opening in Hollywood to a surge of believers eager to share their faith, Dylan has witnessed a renewed hunger for evangelism—fueled, in part, by the passing of cultural icons like Ozzy Osbourne and the influence of modern voices calling Christians to boldness, like Charlie Kirk.Visit https://www.lfbi.org/learnmore
Join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest: Michael Novak Artistic Director of the Paul Taylor Dance CompanyIn this episode of "Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey , host Joanne Carey interviews Michael Novak, the artistic director of the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Michael shares his journey into dance, overcoming personal challenges such as stuttering, and his transition from musical theater to ballet and modern dance. He discusses the importance of authenticity in dance, the role of resident choreographers, and the exciting new educational initiatives at the company's new space. The conversation also highlights the upcoming season at Lincoln Center, featuring a mix of new works and classic pieces, and Michael's vision for the future of the company.Michael Novak: became the second Artistic Director in the history of the Paul Taylor Dance Foundation in September 2018, having been selected by Mr. Taylor months earlier to succeed him upon his death. Novak was nominated for the Clive Barnes Foundation Dance Award for his debut Season. During his career with the Company, he performed fifty-six roles in fifty Taylor dances.Raised in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Novak began studying dance at age ten and by age seventeen was offered a Presidential Scholarship to attend The University of the Arts in Philadelphia to pursue training in jazz and ballet. In 2005 Novak was admitted to Columbia University's School of General Studies, where he was awarded scholarships for academic excellence. He became a member of the Columbia Ballet Collaborative, the University's critically acclaimed resident company, and was named Artistic Associate responsible for advising on the curation of resident choreographers and directing the group's branding and promotion. At Columbia, Novak became immersed in the study of dance history, which ignited a passion for modern dance. He developed a keen interest in the work of François Delsarte, the 19th Century French movement theorist who codified the system linking emotion and gesture that would inspire the first generation of American modern dancers. At Columbia he performed Mr. Taylor's solo in Aureole, which led him to embrace the Taylor repertoire. In a 2009 program celebrating Diaghilev at Columbia's Miller Theatre, Novak embodied Vaslav Nijinsky's role in L'Après-midi d'un faune with an authenticity that brought him to the attention of dance critics and scholars. Upon graduation, he received his BA in Dance magna cum laude with Departmental Honors, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. As a distinguished alumnus, he was the Keynote Speaker for the Class of 2020.The Paul Taylor Dance Company continues to be one of the world's premier dance companies. New York Times hailed his inaugural season as Artistic Director as “groundbreaking and inspirational.” In memory of Mr. Taylor, he launched “The Celebration Tour,” a multi-year international touring retrospective of the Taylor repertoire. He co-directed the Company's first virtual live-streamed benefit, Modern is Now: Stories of our Future,. And during the height of the Covid pandemic, he brought the Taylor Company to sixteen venues in eleven American cities for a total of fifty-one performances, earning the designation “Best of Dance 2021” from The Washington Post. 2021 he selected Taylor alumna and dance educator Carolyn Adams to head the Taylor School showing his commitment to broadening the Foundation's impact in arts education. 2022 Novak selected former New York City Ballet dancer Lauren Lovette to be the Taylor Company's first Resident Choreographer.https://paultaylordance.org/“Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey "Where the Dance World Connects, the Conversations Inspire, and Where We Are Keeping Them Real."https://dancetalkwithjoannecarey.com/Follow Joanne Carey on Instagram@westfieldschoolofdanceTune in.
