Is having a favourite child real, or is it just perception? In this episode of The Happy Families Podcast, Justin and Kylie Coulson dive into the research on parental favouritism, exploring why some children may seem more favoured than others. They discuss how personality traits, gender, and birth order play a role in parental preference and share practical strategies to ensure all children feel valued and loved. KEY POINTS: The concept of favouritism and how it manifests in families. Research findings on parental preference for daughters over sons. Why conscientious and agreeable children tend to receive more positive attention. The impact of favouritism on self-esteem and sibling relationships. Strategies to ensure children feel equally loved and valued. PERSONAL STORIES SHARED: Kylie’s experience with favouritism growing up and her sisters’ perceptions. Justin reflecting on his own childhood as the eldest of six children. Parenting experiences in the Coulson household, including navigating teenage years. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:"See their hearts. When you understand a child, you naturally connect with them more." KEY INSIGHTS FOR PARENTS: Favouritism is often a result of understanding certain children more than others. Different children require different levels of attention at various times. Creating joyful, meaningful moments with each child fosters connection. Parents should be mindful of their body language and interactions to ensure all children feel valued. RESOURCES MENTIONED: Research study: Parents Favour Daughters: A Meta-Analysis of Gender and Other Predictors of Parental Differential Treatment (Published in Psychological Bulletin). ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Reflect on your relationships with each child—who do you understand most and least? Make a conscious effort to connect with the child you understand the least. Create intentional one-on-one time with each child to build meaningful connections. Focus on understanding rather than just liking your child’s personality. Acknowledge that different seasons of parenting bring different challenges and strengths. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MP Evans Group PLC (AIM:MPE) CEO Matthew Coulson takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the company's record results for 2024 and the strong start to 2025. MP Evans Group reported a robust financial performance in 2024, with Coulson confirming a record profit and a 66% increase in earnings per share. “It's been a fantastic year for the group,” Coulson said, noting that high pricing supported the result, with prices averaging around $820 per tonne for the year. The company processed 1.6 million tonnes of crop in 2024, maintaining output despite weather-related challenges in Indonesia. Coulson highlighted this achievement in context: while Indonesia saw a slight national decline in crop yield, MP Evans sustained high volumes, reflecting operational resilience. Planting activity also continued across its operations, particularly in South Sumatra and East Kalimantan. The company expects to exceed 11,000 hectares planted at its Musi Rawas estate in early 2025, while its ABK site in East Kalimantan is set for more extensive development this year. Coulson also noted a milestone in sustainability, with over 250,000 tonnes of certified sustainable output processed across the company's six mills in 2024. Looking ahead, he said 2025 had started positively, with pricing in the first two months averaging $870 per tonne, and the company is actively exploring acquisition opportunities.

Ep.237 Amanda Coulson has worked for three decades as a scholar, critic, curator and cultural producer, having collaborated with artists and institutions, private and corporate colleagues, in the US, Europe, and various sites in the Caribbean. A dual-national (Bahamas/US), she grew up between London, Nassau, and New York, where she studied for her Master's Degree at the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU) and started her career at the Old Master dealers, Wildenstein & Sons, going on to work in various art galleries in London, Paris and Milan. Developing as a writer, Coulson spent 2 years as the international Editor of tema celeste, an Italian bi-lingual contemporary art magazine, before consolidating her critical practice writing for a variety of publications (Frieze, Modern Painters, ARTNews, among others) and providing critical texts for monographic gallery and museum shows. Coulson also worked as a freelance curator in Germany, organizing several exhibitions in Berlin, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Leipzig and Vienna (Austria), with special attention to Bahamian artists. Noting a lack of platforms for galleries representing emerging art, in 2005 she co-founded the VOLTA art fairs, which take place annually in New York and Basel, Switzerland. In 2011, she was invited home to The Bahamas to be Executive Director at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), where her focus was on increasing global awareness of the contemporary Caribbean art scene and on expanding the capacity and reach of the NAGB through a rigorous combination of capital works, collaborative projects and the building of strong inter-island, regional and international networks. She served on the Davidoff Art Initiative (now Caribbean Art Initiative) Board from 2012-2018, and on the Board of the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC) until she stepped down from the NAGB in 2021, after a decade at the helm. She is the founding partner at TERN, a new Nassau-based gallery operated by three Bahamian women whose aim is to support Bahamian and Caribbean artists in telling their own stories the global stage. This month we are joined by Sarah Branson (Coram Chambers) and Professor James Coulson (Professor in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at Cardiff University). We discuss the concern that over-reliance on the numbers generated in hair testing can lead to miscarriages of justice. The issue is that the use of a standardised cut-off levels have a racial bias, because the dark melanin in the hair helps to incorporate the drugs in the hair so someone with black hair will have a much higher reading than someone with red or blond hair, even if they have used the same amount of drugs over the same period of time. Sarah recommends that from now on when hair testing is commissioned that it has to be instructed like other expert evidence – with a letter of instruction, there is a full forensic history. Sarah has drafted a template LOI and order which you can access on the Coram website: https://www.coramchambers.co.uk/resources/hair-strand-testing-resources/ James makes the point that in other Courts (like to civil, criminal or coroners courts) it is unusual to have an analytical chemist commenting on the wider interpretation of the result. James agrees that it is very important that evidence is not seen in isolation. James takes us through the information that he would to see in these instructions in the future. Sarah reminds us that we should start thinking about this evidence as expert opinion evidence rather than elevating the presumptive weight that should be given to the evidence. Sarah directs us to the judgment of Lord Peter Jackson in D, Re (Children: Interim Care Order: Hair Strand Testing) [2024] EWCA Civ 498 (10 May 2024)https://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2024/498.html. Sarah points out the numbers from a test is the science but what those numbers mean is just someone's opinion like any other expert evidence. During the discussion, Sarah and James refer to: The incorporation of drugs into hair: relationship of hair color and melanin concentration to phencyclidine incorporation M H Slawson, D G Wilkins, D E Rollins J Anal Toxicol 1998 Oct 22. Author Christine Coulson spent twenty-five years writing for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her final project was to write wall labels for the museum's new British Galleries. During that time, she dreamt of using The Met's strict label format to describe people as intricate works of art. The result is this "jewel box of a novel" (Kirkus Reviews) that imagines a privileged 20th-century woman as an artifact--an object prized, collected, and critiqued. One Woman Show (Avid Reader Press, 2023) revolves around the life of Kitty Whitaker as she is defined by her potential for display and moved from collection to collection through multiple marriages. Coulson precisely distills each stage of this sprawling life, every brief snapshot in time a wry reflection on womanhood, ownership, value, and power. "A moving story of privilege, womanhood, and the sweep of the 20th century told through a single American life" (Rumaan Alam, author of Leave the World Behind), Kitty is an eccentric heroine who disrupts her porcelain life with both major force and minor transgressions. Described with poignancy and humor, Coulson's playful reversal on our interaction with art ultimately questions who really gets to tell our stories. Christine Coulson spent 25 years writing for The Metropolitan Museum of Art and left the museum as Senior Writer in 2019. She started at The Met in 1991 as a summer intern in the European Paintings Department and returned in 1994 to start her first job at the museum after graduate school. During her tenure, she rose through the ranks of the museum, working in the Development Office, the Director's Office, and the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. In 2017, The Met gave Coulson a yearlong sabbatical to write Metropolitan Stories, her bestselling 2019 novel about the museum. Recommended Books: Katheryn Scanlan, Kick the Latch J.L. In this episode of the 500 Doors Real Estate Podcast, host Kim Hayden sits down with Kimberly Coulson, who shares her inspiring journey from Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, to making her mark in Seattle's real estate market. Kimberly opens up about how feeling isolated led her to real estate as a way to find and build community. Throughout the episode, she stresses the importance of prioritizing human connection and emotional understanding with clients, focusing on building long-term relationships rather than seeing transactions as the end goal. Kimberly advocates for face-to-face interactions over digital communication, explaining why genuine, in-person meetings are crucial to success in the post-pandemic real estate landscape. She also dives into how new agents can embrace authenticity, learn from failures, and become visible leaders within their communities. Packed with personal stories, practical advice for buyers and sellers, and a bit of light-hearted conversation, this episode is a must-watch for anyone looking to thrive in real estate.Connect with Kimberly;kimberly.everydoorrealestate.comThe_notoriousss_kLove the show? Todays' Episode is a fast-moving, high-intensity blast from start to finish. That's mostly because of the people I'm talking to, but also due to the circumstances under which we are doing the talking. First the people. Richard Brindle is well known to anyone in our business as one of the most dynamic underwriters in the market. And anyone following the Fidelis story will know that now the business has split into the Fidelis Partnership and the Fidelis Insurance Group, Richard has freed up time to be even more dynamic. It's perhaps understandable that Richard Coulson, The Fidelis Partnership's CEO of Insurance & Deputy Group Chief Underwriting Officer, doesn't yet have the same public profile as his namesake, but on this performance it won't take long for that to start building. Secondly the venue was Monaco at the Monte Carlo RendezVous. The RendezVous always heightens the intensity of any interaction. People come there ready to communicate against the clock and that cut-to-the-chase feel very much comes through in this encounter. As a result this podcast covers everything it should – the state of global markets and where Fidelis is positioning itself to make the most of the opportunities those markets are throwing up, the Fidelis Partnership's entrance to Lloyd's and the two Richard's views on all the major issues of the day. Listening back this is a really enjoyable Episode, packed with singular, original and sometimes surprising insights. NOTES The Fidelis Partnership wanted to add the following points to our discussion about Intellectual Property (IP) insurance: Like others Fidelis exited the IP market earlier this year; Arguably IP is a great example of the bravery of innovation with measured downside and then pulling back quickly as soon as the warning alarms sounded; As a relatively small and well-managed book, there was very little impact on their overall exceptional long-term bespoke underwriting performance. Phil Coulson explains that God's programme for the ages revolves around His dealings with three distinct groups of people: the Jews, the Gentile nations, and the church of God. Grasping this fact will provide the key to understanding the revelation of God's overarching purposes in history and prophecy. Mr Coulson points out the three groups from four Bible books: (1) Acts 15:12-18, (2) 1 Cor 10:31, (3) John 12:1-2, 12-15, 20, (4) Matt 13:44-50. Recorded Live at the Museum of Natural History in Oxford, England on August 8th, 2024. Folk icon Peggy Seeger talks with Oxford University Biology Professor Tim Coulson about her experience as feminist, ecologist, activist, mother, musician, Seeger and more. Eco Feminism can be defined as a branch of feminism and political ecology that explores the connections between women and nature. The theory argues that the oppression of women and the degradation of our natural environment are linked and caused by patriarchal, capitalist systems. Further, ecofeminist theory calls for an egalitarian, collaborative society in which there is no one dominant group. Professor Coulson provides compelling context from scholarship to further amplify these ideas including description of pre-patriarchal societies, the importance of educating women in developing countries and more.

It has been 9 months of homeschooling for the Coulson crew, with plenty of ups and downs and many lessons learned. One of those lessons is that homeschool is not and cannot just be "school at home". When a child is struggling in a school setting, taking them out of that environment only to set up the same structures and lessons at home doesn't change the challenges that your child is experiencing!
