Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by a total giant in media and creation, it's RENAY RICHARDSON!Renay's been hard at work in so many ways and in so many areas of the game, and for such a long time, this is one of those episodes where a choice of lanes must be made, lest the conversation become unweildy and impossible to finish... She's also been a very big piece of the Distraction Pieces puzzle at the very beginning of the road so will always get props for that. This is an ace conversation which, as said, darts around willfully and for everyone's benefit as there's a huge amount to enjoy and get stuck into. Included among the darting is the old chestnut of Zoom recording and contending with that as opposed to the face to face, the many varied methods of becoming a parent and the difficulties for single women to adopt, starting early with instilling lessons in kids, time spent at The BRIT School, critical thinking when it comes to podcasts, and not getting everything from the same place. Saying all this though - high up on the list is the book Renay wrote with Arisa Loomba called 'Human Resources - Slavery and the Making of Modern Britain' - and best believe that gets a good talking about too. Proper fascinating and very very crucial listening here, get yourself involved.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureHUMAN RESOURCES bookINTERVIEW RE: BROCCOLI PRODUCTIONSINSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. Rachel Walker MasonEver since I can remember I've been able to see music as colours when I listen to music or compose a song. I've since learned that this condition is called synaesthesia and people often refer to it as “my superpower”.I always felt my happiest and most fulfilled when I was singing or writing music so it felt natural to make it my career path. I've never wanted to do anything else as a job and am very lucky that I've been able to live my dream, pursuing music through school, my undergraduate degree then a masters in songwriting before starting my career as a freelance songwriter, musical director and vocal coach.During my career, I've performed all over the world, coached hundreds of singers from beginners to west end performers, run an artist management company and worked extensively in my community to encourage different generations to bond through the arts. For this, I was crowned Freelancer Of The Year and Woman of the Year. Throughout my life, I've struggled with my mental health and when my children were born I was diagnosed with postnatal depression. After recovering I set up Lyrical Light as a songwriting workshop for those struggling with their mental health after becoming parents. It's a real honour to be able to help people through music. My work now encompasses both of these aspects from co-writing and songwriting, working as a Maternal Mental Health Ambassador and with parents who are suffering from Post-Natal Depression.  In this episode of Visual Intonation, we meet Ibrahim K. Muhammad—a director, photographer, cinematographer, and editor who's redefining the boundaries of storytelling. Based in London, Ibrahim's journey began not with a formal film education, but with the lens of a mobile phone and a childhood passion for recreating 'Lego' movies. His path took him through the BRIT School and the University of Westminster, eventually leading him to co-direct his first short film, 'SHEEP', in 2019.  Fast-forward to now, Ibrahim's journey has collided with global names like John Boyega and Converse, resulting in his latest short film, 'ONLY CHILD'. But how did this all start? In a Zoom call with Converse and other emerging filmmakers, Ibrahim found himself stepping into a world where creative potential meets unparalleled resources. The rest, as they say, is history.  But Ibrahim's story isn't just about cameras and editing suites; it's about the power of storytelling itself. His work is a reflection of his deep connection to history, culture, and identity—elements that are woven into every frame he captures. Inspired by figures like Gordon Parks, whose work bridged the worlds of photography and social change, Ibrahim views his craft as a tool for manipulation, not just of light and shadow, but of reality itself. For him, photography and film are more than mediums—they're vehicles for creating truths that resonate far beyond the screen. In this episode, Ibrahim shares his insights on the evolution of his artistry, how he's shaping the future of visual storytelling, and the impact he hopes to leave on the world.  This episode dives deep into Ibrahim's evolution—from weekly cinema visits with his dad to the visual mastery he commands today. We explore his love for photography, his influences from legends like David Fincher and Michel Gondry, and his unique take on visual storytelling. Get ready for a conversation about making art, breaking barriers, and finding your own voice in the ever-changing world of film. Ibrahim K. This episode was recorded on August 8th, 2024. Born in Kent, my podcast guest found his calling in music at the Brit School of Performing Arts, where he often collaborated with Adele. His path took an unusual turn away from the limelight to window cleaning, which brought unexpected contentment. However, a health crisis at 23 led to a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and a subsequent life-saving surgery. Despite conventional methods, his mental health struggled until a chance encounter with a video by Mikhaila Peterson led him to the Carnivore Diet. This evidently led to the resolution of his depression, helping him regain control of his life. Today we are back in the Reign studio and I have a hoot with my new favourite pop girlie, Talia Mar. Following her hits ‘Stay the Night' and ‘Sweet Lies', Talia has just dropped my favourite song of the moment, ‘Bored' which, whilst being a banger, is actually all about a boring date she went on to Nando's. Now, if that isn't a bit of us I don't know what is!  In today's episode, Talia takes us back to the beginning of her career when she started uploading YouTube videos at 13 years old - including a questionable self-penned country song about her fella going off to war, which we will discuss - and how she accidentally found herself becoming a huge gaming influencer. But music was always Talia's first love after going to see Christina Aguilera in her ‘Dirty' chaps era when she was five (her parents are clearly legends), and attending The BRIT School, which sounds absolutely wild.   We also chat about everything from her first job being the Karen of Chessington World of Adventures (niche!), to her hilarious perspective on getting married this year to her husband Simon, aka Miniminter who is one of the Sidemen with KSI.  Talia also talks about eye-opening online hate, which has seen her deal with everything from hateful comments, to trending on an adult website with men doing their ‘business' on her images, and people trying to stir up trouble in her relationship. But as you will learn from this episode, Talia is a resilient queen and she won't let that stop her for one second.  If you love Talia as much as I do, get in touch with me via social media @joshsmithhosts and come back next week for another episode of Reign when we will be joined by the ICON BILLY PORTER. "Black Midi" are a four piece rock band from London, often described as a mixture of noise rock, post-punk, jazz and progressive rock.Black Midi's members all met while studying music at the BRIT school, an infamous school in the world of UK music whose former pupils include King Krule, Amy Winehouse and Adelle. They would spend their time outside of studying to get together and jam in the school rehearsal rooms, a process which eventually led them to perform live at Brixton's "Windmill" live music venue. It was at this venue that music producer Dan Carey saw them play and offered his services to record and produce some of their material, an opportunity that would see them record in a studio for the very first time.Fast forward to late 2021 and "Black Midi" have released two full length albums as well as a selection of EP's and live recordings. These guys are young, incredibly talented and produce some very intense and intricate music. On this episode of Roots to Grooves Jay and Jesse dive deeper and play some of their favorite tracks."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
