“I don't think teenage years are all that rosy for a lot of people - they certainly weren't for me. They are the most confusing time of people's lives and there is a tremendous dark side to the record, which I think teenagers related to.” - Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las, on their greatest hit “Leader of the Pack”It was no wonder punk rockers love the Shangri-Las so much. They had the courage to be fashionable, fierce, and vulnerable in a music industry that just wasn't built for them. This week's story is a wild tale: stolen song credits, banning from BBC radio, and organized crime - the drama is so wild, it reads like a Shangri-Las song! Sometimes the truth is stranger than motorcycle-crashing fiction. PLUS: What do Abby and Emma really think of the casting for the upcoming Beatle biopics? Today's guest was bound to happen. Meet Tex Mosely from Neverland Ranch Davidians. Tex and his band were suggested to me a couple of years ago by my friend Ian. I reached out and we tried to get everything to mesh but just couldn't make it work. A few years later, here we are.  Tex talks about growing up in Philly and having music all around him. His uncle was a professional bass player. Tex started playing guitar and even took lessons from jazz legend, Pat Martino! He began his life in music in Philly, but he eventually found his way to LA. He joined up with The Slaves and found favor with Concrete Blonde, one of my favorite bands. But after a while, rock and roll and substance abuse took its toll on him. But he found help, love, and safety back with his family in Philly.  After his recovery, Tex moved back to LA and joined a band called Neighborhood Bullys. They had such a good sound that they ended up being Suzi Quatro's band for her album In The Spotlight. But there's one odd thing about that recording and I'll let Tex tell that story. Tex's latest band is Neverland Ranch Davidians. It started off as a lo-fi project and wound up being his singing debut. He tells how he met the other band members, Max Hagen and Will Bentley and how he came up with the band name. Their sophomore release is out soon and it's an amalgamation of all Tex's influences (except maybe Pat Martino). It's called Shout It On The Mountain and that title tells it all. It's a rock album. That's it. Tex is a blast to talk with and shares great stories from his early days through the making of the new album. Pre-order it on Heavy Medication Records, buy the debut, and follow Neverland Ranch Davidians on the socials. You can't miss them. Follow us @PerformanceAnx, buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com and send money through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Tread Perilously continues a witchy October with The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. When neighborhood kids harass Paul Lynde about his plans to celebrate Halloween, he flees to the home of his housekeeper's sister. But he soon learns both are witches with remarkable resemblances to Witchiepoo and The Wicked Witch of the West. As it turns out, they want him to be a spokesman for witches. In return, he'll get three wishes granted and a private concert from KISS. The latter aspect is not negotiable. What wishes will Paul get granted? Will KISS let Peter sing "Beth"? And will guest stars Billy Barty, Florence Henderson, and Betty White make a mark on the proceedings? Erik and Justin try to deal with a variety special making a stab at an ongoing narrative. They also conjure the Osmonds back into existence. The previous on-screen persona of Betty White is explored. Bruce Vilanch returns as Erik reads out a very long list of writers. The Pinky Tuscadero phenomenon gets explained ... including the unlikely connection to Suzi Quatro. The pair take a closer look at KISS and give "Beth" a review. Erik decries the industry for not giving Margaret Hamilton a true starring role and the long delayed Alien: Romulus chat finally occurs.

The Smokie Legend: How Chris Norman Became Rock Royalty

Ever wondered why Chris Norman left Smokie? What he's doing now or if the band wrote their own songs? Tune in for all of these answers and more. As you know, Chris is a British singer-songwriter renowned for his iconic voice and role as the lead vocalist of the band Smokie. Born in 1950, Chris was exposed to music from an early age, influenced by the rise of rock ‘n' roll in the 50s and early 60s. Inspired by legends like Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and The Beatles, he developed a passion for music that would shape his career. In the late '60s, Chris teamed up with school friends Alan Silson, Terry Uttley, and Ron Kelly to form a band initially known as The Yen and later Kindness. Their musical journey took a turn when they became Smokie in the early 70s, after being discovered by producers Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Smokie quickly rose to international fame with their distinctive blend of soft rock and pop. Their first major hit was "If You Think You Know How to Love Me" in 75, followed by chart-topping tracks like "Living Next Door to Alice," "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone," and "Oh Carol." Norman's raspy, emotive voice became the hallmark of Smokie's sound. With their catchy melodies and accessible rock style, Smokie became one of the most successful British bands of the 70s. The band's music was characterised by its heartfelt lyrics and warm harmonies with Chris' vocals often drawing comparisons to Rod Stewart. In 1982 Chris Norman decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career. While his departure marked the end of an era for Smokie, he quickly found his footing as a solo artist. He initially gained fame outside the UK, particularly in Germany, where he found a loyal fan base. His first major solo success came in 78 when he recorded the hit "Stumblin' In," a duet with Suzi Quatro. It was his 1986 single "Midnight Lady" that truly cemented his solo career. Hugely popular in Europe, he continued to release successful albums throughout the 80s and 90s. His solo work took on a more polished pop-rock sound, with hints of folk and country influences, which appealed to a broad audience. Tracks like "Some Hearts Are Diamonds" and "Broken Heroes" became fan favoruites. Chris' solo career continued to flourish into the 2000s, with regular album releases and extensive touring. Despite his departure from Smokie, he maintained a good relationship with his former bandmates and occasionally reunited with them for special performances. While Smokie continued with new vocalists, Chris Norman remained the voice most associated with the band's biggest hits. In 1995, Norman was honored with an award for “International Video Star of the Year” by CMT Europe. Over the years, he has experimented with different styles, blending rock, pop, folk, and country in his solo work, showcasing his versatility as an artist. Today Chris continues to tour extensively across Europe and other regions, performing both Smokie classics and his solo hits. His live performances draw large audiences, captivated by his timeless voice and charismatic stage presence. Chris Norman's career has spanned over five decades and as he continues to perform and record new music, he delights fans both old and new. From his time as the lead singer of Smokie to his successful solo career, Chris Norman remains a beloved figure in the global music scene, with a legacy that continues to grow. Chris Norman joins us this week to share his story. You can learn more about him here https://www.chris-norman.co.uk/

Send us a Text Message. The magnificent Davia Schendel joins Jeff and Matt to discuss Suzi Quatro's second album, Quatro.Today's conversation definitely goes deep into "music nerd" territory. We talk about record stores of the past, making playlists devoted to things like gated reverb and snare hits. Should we talk about the underrated power player in music that is known as the saxophone? You're darn right, we should.  How much does the bass rule? We've got thoughts. There are stray conversations about movie soundtracks, AOR soundtrack rarities , Roxy Music and Duran Duran. We discuss some non-musical things too, you know, the related and relevant topics like the holy trinity of oxygen machines, smoking and gambling. But there's also wisdom. Davia puts the thought out there about how "nothing is singular." We're keeping that as our new mantra. It was truly a joy to speak with Davia about so many things and it's a conversation that we both walked away from feeling energized and inspired.Check out Through the Deluge, Davia's newest EP -- and make sure to sign up for her newsletter/podcast, Zeitgest Deterrent. Welcome to a Very Special Episode of the podcast celebrating the show's 3rd Anniversary! I started the podcast in March 2021 during the depths of the pandemic, when musicians like me couldn't play live. It was a bleak time for all of us. I needed to find a creative outlet and so I started this podcast. From the beginning it grew quickly and exponentially. It's been ranked for some time now in the Top 1% of all podcasts. I have listeners worldwide on every continent in 200 countries, and it has won several awards! My guests have included many of the world's most famous musicians and other creatives.Last year to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary I played excerpts from several guest interviews. But for this 3rd Anniversary show I wanted to do something different - and fun. So here's what I decided. After each interview I ask my guest to record a short promo for the podcast. I use these promos at the beginning of other guest interviews. Everyone does their promo a little differently in their own style. After all, they're artists! So I thought it would be fun to put together a montage of promos featuring a slew of my guests. The entire list is below.I want to thank my guests and my listeners for the success of the podcast. What the Riff?!?
1979 - February: “Saturday Night Fever” Soundtrack

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2024 41:17

OK, it isn't rock music, but the Soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" was a tremendously successful album both commercially and critically, and it had a major impact in popular culture of the later 70's.  The theatrical release of the movie actually went back to December of 1977, but it was the winner of the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in February 1979, one of only three soundtrack albums to do so.  Composed by the Bee Gees and prominently featuring that band, this soundtrack is the second-best selling of all time behind "The Bodyguard."  The Bee Gees actually didn't get involved with the film until it was in post-production.  John Travolta was dancing to Stevie Wonder and Boz Scaggs when the scenes were filmed.  Columbia Records refused legal clearance for Scaggs material because they were pursuing another disco movie at the time, and the Bee Gees were commissioned to write the songs for the film.  The brothers Gibb wrote the songs primarily in a single weekend.  The resulting success would change the trajectory of both the Bee Gees and actor John Travolta.  The Bee Gees would become a group often compared to the Beatles in the late 70's.  Travolta, already well known for his role in the television series "Welcome Back, Kotter," would become an A-list celebrity and a household name.In 2013 the album was added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress for preservation.Lynch is responsible for this travesty, as the other participants do so under protest.  Support your local rock band, folks! Night FeverThis song was originally called "Saturday Night," but Robin Gibb was concerned about that name because of the number of songs already bearing the name.  "Night Fever" was inspired by Percy Faith's "Theme from 'A Summer Place'", and it spent 8 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. How Deep Is Your LoveThis pop ballad was released in September of 1977, ahead of the movie.  It had hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 by Christmas Day of 1977, remained there for 3 weeks, and spent 17 total weeks in the top 10.  Barry Gibb has commented that this is his favorite Bee Gees song.  It won Best Pop Performance by a Group at the February 1978 Grammy awards. You Should Be DancingPrior to their involvement with the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, the Bee Gees first released this track on their album "Children of the World" in 1976.  This is the song playing when Travolta takes over the disco dance floor. Jive Talkin'Here is another song that had been previously issued before the soundtrack was released.  The lead single from the album "Main Course" was released in May 1975, long before "Saturday Night Fever."  The song was originally called "Drive Talking," and the rhythm was inspired by the sound the band's car made crossing the Julia Tuttle Causeway as they traveled to the studio in Miami. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dancing Queen by ABBAA mockumentary called "ABBA:  The Movie" was in the theatres at this time in the U.S. STAFF PICKS:Is She Really Going Out with Him by Joe JacksonWayne gets the staff picks going with a song that asks why good looking women date horrible men.  Joe Jackson is often confused with Elvis Costello, another artist releasing albums at the time.  This is Jackson's debut single from his debut album, "Look Sharp."The Gambler by Kenny RogersBruce brings us Kenny Roger's signature song.  Songwriter Don Schlitz wrote this song in 1976 and it was recorded by several musicians including Johnny Cash before Rogers took it to number 1 on the country charts and number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The gambler looks through life through the lens of poker, knowing "every hand's a winner, and every hand's a loser," and of course "you've got to know then to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em."Stumblin' In by Chris Norman and Suzi QuatroRob's staff pick is the sole top 40 hit by female rock pioneer Suzi Quatro, and Norman's only hit outside of his previous band, Smokie.  This duet made it to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Both singers have a smoky vocal sound.Do You Think I'm Sexy? by Rod StewartLynch notes Stewart's ability to surf the waves of popularity with this staff pick.  While Rod Stewart honed his craft in the rock genre, he achieved both popularity and notoriety with his polarizing choice of embracing disco music in the late 70's.  Today this song remains one of his most popular tunes. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pegasus by The Allman Brothers BandThe Allman Brothers were decidedly NOT a disco band in this instrumental jam. Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. This week get your nerd on with us as we are raiding the Prog Rock crypt again. However, this will be a much different journey into the world of progressiveness, as we are covering Neo-Prog from the early to mid-1980s. A much different time for progressive rock, as these bands were influenced by more than just Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. These groups were injecting heavy doses of hard rock, new wave, punk, and pop into their progressive Day-Glo soup! Keep an open mind and give it a listen…What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40 years it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to the 1980s music by bands like Marillion and Pendragon… This is Neo-Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!Songs this week include:Saga – “Wind Him Up” from Worlds Apart (1981)Twelfth Night – “East Of Eden” from Smiling At Grief (1982)IQ – “The Wake” from The Wake (1985) Pendragon – “Fly High Fall Far” from The Jewel (1985)Gowan – “Keep Up The Fight” from Gowan (1982)It Bites – “All In Red” from The Big Lad In The Windmill (1986)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Susan Kay Quatro was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1950, and grew up pursuing performing. Suzi was playing bongos on stage with her father's jazz band by the age of eight, and by 14 she's changed her name to Suzi soul and had left school to become a Go-Go dancer. By the age of 15, Suzi was fronting the band the Pleasure Seekers, with her sisters. The band toured the country and were invited to Vietnam to entertain troops, before changing their name to Cradle in the early 1970's and transitioning to a more hard-rock sound. It was performing with Cradle where Suzi was first noticed by British producer Mickie Most, who was interested in Suzi as a solo performer. Mickie invited her to London and introduced her to professional songwriters Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, which turned out to be a winning formula. In 1973, “Can the Can” flew to number one and went on to sell two and a half million copies worldwide. Between 1973 and 1980, Suzi featured in the British charts for no less than 101 weeks, and has sold to date over 55 million records. Since then, she has released fifteen studio albums, ten compilation albums, and one live album. Other songs, including "48 Crash", "Daytona Demon", "The Wild One", and "Your Mama Won't Like Me", also charted highly overseas. While Suzi enjoyed great success both in the UK and Australia, she is mostly known in the US for her cameo on hit TV show Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero. However the appearance might've helped her duet "Stumblin' In" with Smokie's lead singer Chris Norman reach No. 4 in the US. Suzi is still active, writing, broadcasting, recording, and this year she's embarking on her 38th tour of Australia.

The introduction emphasizes the significant role each of these women has had in promoting feminism, either through activism or personal example. The book includes interviews with trailblazers like Suzi Quatro, Ann Wilson, Exene Cervenka, Lydia and others, exploring their journeys, challenges in the music industry, and how they paved the way for future female artists. In She's a Badass, music journalist Katherine Yeske Taylor interviews twenty significant and compelling women in rock, devoting an entire chapter to each one, taking an in-depth look at the incredible talent, determination—and, often, humor—they needed to succeed in their careers (and life). Interviewees range from legendary artists through notable up-and-comers: Suzi Quatro, Ann Wilson (Heart), Exene Cervenka (X), Gina Schock (The Go-Go's), Lydia Lunch, Suzanne Vega, Cherie Currie (The Runaways), Joan Osborne, Donita Sparks (L7), Amy Ray (Indigo Girls), Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses/The Breeders/Belly), Paula Cole, Tobi Vail (Bikini Kill), Laura Veirs, Catherine Popper, Amanda Palmer, Bonnie Bloomgarden (Death Valley Girls), Orianthi, Fefe Dobson, and Sade Sanchez (L.A. Witch). Their experiences reveal the varied and unique challenges these women have faced, how they overcame them, and what they think still needs to be done to continue making progress on the equality front. Their stories prove that promoting feminism—either through activism or by living example—is undeniably badass. A very special Afterword is included from Susan Rogers, the longtime in-house recording engineer for Prince. Feminism has always been a complex and controversial topic, as female rock musicians know especially well. Over the course of the twenty conversations artists such as Ann Wilson share their experience and views on how women are still treated differently than their male counterparts and that it still happens "...constantly. All the time,” Wilson tells Yeske Taylor, adding, "By standing up and being bold and not being submissive, do females go against the very basis of their gender, as it applies to culture? If they do, then that's called being rebellious.” And, as Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill notes in her chapter, that element of rebellion remains necessary to this day: “If you look at history, you can see that progress is not linear; it goes back and forth, You never know when [progress] is going to go backwards, so you always have to be fighting. You have to be aware that rights we do have were achieved through political struggle. You can't take them for granted.”

"Face To Face" Although she got her start behind the drum kit playing for her dad's band, the Detroit-born Suzi Quatro taught herself how to play bass so she could be in her sister's band, The Pleasure Seekers. She moved to England at 21 and released a string of rather massive albums like her 1973 self-titled debut and the searing Your Mamma Won't Like Me in 1975. A pioneering presence in the pop world, Quatro influenced everyone from Joan Jett to Chrissie Hynde to the Talking Heads' Tina Weymouth. A global superstar with over 50 million albums sold, Quatro's CV is a wealth of riches. Here are just a few of her highlights: She toured with Slade and Thin Lizzy, headlined the 'Girls Night Out' at the Isle of Wight Festival, won a handful of Bravo Otto awards, appeared on Happy Days as rocker Leather Tuscadero, was awarded the Icon Award by the Women's International Music Network, was inducted to the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame, received an honorary doctorate in music from Anglia Ruskin University and appeared as Annie Oakley in a London production of Annie Get Your Gun and friends. The singer/songwriter is a stone cold legend and her music is filled with melodic muscle and harmonic smarts. Her new album, a joint effort with Scottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall is an instant classic. Titled Face To Face, it's a stirring song cycle that's reflective, confessional, tough and tender and catchy as hell. It's a perfect album that's an end to end delight. www.suziquatro.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) Stereo Embers www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast
