Periodically on TRUST ME I KNOW WHAT I'm DOING , we share a SPOTLIGHT conversation and feature brief chats with an individual from the community about a special topic or a unique endeavor. In this spotlight episode, Aki Kumar shares his journey as a blues musician, discussing the universality of blues themes, the importance of being a lifelong student of the genre, and how his Desi identity influences his music. He reflects on the emotional outlet that blues provides and the lessons learned from performing. Aki also explores the relationship between art and identity, expressing optimism for the future of music and his upcoming album. Check out his website (akikumar.com) for news and details about upcoming shows! Now there are lots of people who love Bollywood music, and there are certainly a lot of people who love American blues music. But what happens when those two worlds meet? And that's what set the stage for a conversation I shared with Aki Kumar, a musician and singer who for over the past decade has been trying to ensure that the intersection of these two musical genres is a space that you need to pay attention to. Aki was born and raised in Mumbai and came to the US to study computer science - ok that part isn't without a playbook or blueprint. But with a passion for Indian music and a deep new embrace for American blues history and local blues performances, Aki set about to express himself by blending melodies from Hindi films with blues music, garnering a buzz for his performances everywhere, many local awards along the way, and the title of “San Jose's king of Bollywood Blues”. Now I have to tell you, that I caught one of his shows here in the Bay Area, and from experiencing Aki on stage, his singing, his killer harmonica style, and his superb band, I could not have asked for a more entertaining way to enjoy both true Americana mixed with some soulful imaginations of Indian music. Now for me this was all a pleasant surprise because I had made some natural assumptions about what Bollywood Blues might be, so as we began chatting, I asked him if he also made assumptions about persona or expectations when it came to his unique brand of making music?Like many, my heart and soul go out to those who are struggling as a result of the Los Angeles wildfires. Please help contribute to the American Red Cross, Mutual Aid LA Network, various Go FundMe efforts, Save the Children, and Baby2Baby. Hoping for a safe, peaceful, and supportive recovery for everyone.

We are back with our good friend Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Since the last time we interviewed Kenny, he has released a follow up album to "Dirt On My Diamonds, Vol 1" iornically titled, "Dirt On My Diamonds, Vol 2". In addition to the new album, we talk about Kenny's experience actually playing Jimi Hendrix's "Woodstock" guitar and his upcoming tour, plus 2 new albums set to release in 2025. Kenny is a five-time-Grammy-nominated guitarist. The new album was recorded at the Legendary Fame Stuios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This project chronicles Shepherd's journey of musical evolution, touching on stories of loss, redemption, and memorable melodies. All crafted by an elite team of songwriters. Born in Louisiana, in 1977, Shepherd's own life has never followed the script. Steeped in classic blues and rock 'n' roll from an early age by his dad - a respected Lousiana radio personality and promoter - Kenny soon reached for his first Fender stratocaster and found he didn't require lessons to make it cry and wail. Long before Warner Brothers subsidairy Giant Records offered a deal, Shepherd had toured in clubs which he was too young to drink in. Please also check out our precious KWS interview released: October 7, 2023.

Whether on behalf of Dodge trucks, on the show “Animal Kingdom,” on behalf of Monster Energy, ESPN, in the video game Cyberpunk 2077, or just on the radio—you've probably heard The Cold Stares. For the past decade, The Cold Stares have toured the world relentlessly as a duo, blowing away audiences across the US and Europe with a fierce, blistering live show that belied their bare bones, guitar-and-drums setup. Now, the band is embracing a whole new kind of chemistry as they launch their next chapter, adding a third member and channeling the classic power trio sound they grew up on with their explosive new album. We recently sat down with the band's ridiculously talented frontman, founder, lead singer and guitarist Chris Tapp about the band's newest album THE SOUTHERN that's pretty great.

The milestone tenth studio album from folk-blues luminary Ruthie Foster, Mileage finds the singer-songwriter reflecting on a life that's been full of professional triumphs, courtesy of a musical journey that took a self-described “little Black girl with a guitar” from singing at churches in rural Texas to chalking up multiple Grammy nominations. With this album in particular, Ruthie shares a collection of songs that was inspired by heartfelt conversations with producer Tyler Bryant and Rebecca Lovell, Bryant's wife and one-half of the duo Larkin Poe. In that regard, Mileage was borne from a unique and very personal experience, one that found the music emerging organically and in ways that were both real and illuminating. The result is an album flush with creative synergy and symmetry, a snapshot of a career well spent.Consequently, Mileage also marks for a profound collaboration with the legendary Sun Records, one that allows Ruthie's narrative to intertwine with the legendary label's rich tapestry of musical history courtesy of a soul-stirring journey through America's musical heartland. In that regard, it's more than merely an album — rather, it's an invitation to take part in a conversation about memories, emotions, and shared humanity. Speaking with Lee and Billy, Ruthie describes the ways in which she was able to dig deep into her own life story and bring to life her dreams, desires and aspirations. With both verve and vulnerability, she shares her story. No matter whether she's singing blues, gospel, R&B, or rock and roll, on records or in conversation, Ruthie Foster makes it an honor to simply be in her presence. If you are a musician and have a stamp of approval from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, and blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa—odds are good things are coming your way. Thus is the case of our latest guest on the Load Out Music Podcast: British-born blues rocker Joanne Shaw Taylor, who released her latest album, Heavy Soul, this past June. Taylor's new record, Heavy Soul, dropped June 7, through Joe Bonamassa's Journeyman Records. It was produced by Kevin Shirley who is known for his work with the Black Crowes, Journey, and Aerosmith. The album infuses Taylor's blues origins, blending contemporary soul-pop with traditional blues; and its title track delves into emotional struggles with powerful lyrics and stirring melodies. Ultimately, Taylor's focused on trying to ensure her sound is fresh album-after album while still maintaining her unique signature style. “When I look back on my catalogue of work, hopefully when I'm 170-years-old,” she noted with a laugh. “I want every album to be different…I want them all to sound like the same artist. Does it sound like me? I'm not going to put out a rockabilly album. And also, how do I keep it fresh for myself?” Enjoy a terrific chat with the amazingly talented Joanne Shaw Taylor on the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast.

Joe Bonamassa is not a household name. But if you ask any musician one of their top favorite guitarist, Joe will surely be included. Only in his 40s, Bonamassa has become a living legend with an astounding multi-genre catalogue. Collectively, Joe has over 40 albums to date with studio and live recordings, collaborative albums with blues sensation Beth Hart and his adventurous side projects: Black Country Communion and Rock Candy Fund Party. A prolific writer always on the hunt to expand his eclectic musical horizons, Bonamassa has a limitless work eithic whether it's in a studio, on the road or working with other artists to spur new music. The New York state native opened for B.B. King when he was only 12 years old and has since played alongside such artists as Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, John Lee Hooker, Warren Haynes, Steve Winwood, Peter Frampton and Buddy Guy, among others. B.B. King might not have guessed it at the time, but that 12-year-old prodigy would go on to become an industry powerhouse. Building on their 30-year parnership, Joe and manager Roy Weisman created their own record label, management, marketing and concert promotion company called J&R Adventures almost two decades ago. Together, the two mavericks devised a 360-degree independent business model that has survived and thrived during one of the music industry's most uncertain eras.
