Today we're trying something new on the show –  it's a different kind of book review, where we have a healthy disagreement around the core arguments made in a recently released book. The book is The Case for American Power by Shadi Hamid, a columnist for the Washington Post and host of the Wisdom of Crowds podcast. It's a fascinating read – Shadi makes a case that you don't hear very often: that America should be using its power for moral and humanitarian ends. It's a broad-based appeal but also a specific appeal to those on the left who have become deeply skeptical and disillusioned with American power. So to offer a critique we have brought on someone who is deeply skeptical of American power. Trita Parsi is an Iranian-Swedish-American political scientist, author, and foreign policy expert and is currently the Executive Vice President of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Shadi Khalloul, founder and chairman of the Israeli Christian Aramean Association, is one of Israel's most compelling voices for coexistence, minority rights, and Christian identity in the Middle East. A veteran IDF paratrooper and commander, Khalloul has become a leading advocate for recognizing and empowering Israel's Aramean Christian community, bridging a deep cultural and historical gap that often goes unheard in global media. Khalloul has dedicated his public life to building bridges between Jews and Christians, between Israel and the West, and between faith and national identity. His story resonates with audiences across political and religious lines: a proud Israeli Christian and veteran IDF paratrooper who risked his life for his country, yet also challenges the world to see Israel through the eyes of its indigenous Christian community. As founder of the Israeli Christian Aramean Association, Khalloul was instrumental in the 2014 decision by Israel's Interior Ministry to officially recognize the Aramean Christian nationality, restoring an identity suppressed for centuries. He has since championed education, language revival, and military integration for young Aramean Christians, emphasizing shared service and civic participation as pathways to belonging. This week's episode is a live recording of Wisdom of Crowds, where we celebrated a very special occasion: the publication of Shadi Hamid's new book, The Case for American Power. The book is a soul-searching study about American power as a force for good in the world, and it combines memoir and foreign policy analysis. Shadi's thesis is that if we want to make the world “more just and more moral, more democratic and more respectful of human rights,” then backing the United States is both the “last best hope and the least-bad option.”Joining Shadi Hamid and Damir Marusic is special guest Matt Duss, former foreign policy advisor to Bernie Sanders, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy, and co-host of the Undiplomatic Podcast. “I am certainly not against the idea of American power,” says Matt. But his question is: “Which America?” Duss is less optimistic that US power can be put to good use because, he says, we are currently having a national debate about “what is the nature of the American project.” It's unclear how that debate will end.Nevertheless, Shadi argues, American democracy, however imperfect, is still superior to the regimes in the other global hegemons, Russia and China. We should not fear our own home — oikophobia is a real issue, Shadi says, using the term for “fear of one's home,” the opposite of xenophobia. Duss partially agrees, but says that being a democracy does not necessarily imbue American foreign policy with moral authority. “International law does that.” The topic of international law prompts Damir to steer the conversation towards the topic of Gaza. Does American collaboration with Israeli war crimes disprove Shadi's thesis? Or does it paradoxically strengthen the argument that the world needs morally-guided American power?
