Sydney coach Patrick Kisnorbo is taking a siege mentality into tonight's A-League Grand Final against Auckland FC. They've made the trip across the Tasman to meet the Black Knights at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium, aiming to spoil their party and take home the title. Kisnorbo took up the coaching role in March, and he told Piney the key to the team's success was simply showing the players some love, belief, and positivity. He says they've been very adaptable, great to work with, and they deserved this chance to play in the Grand Finals. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sydney FC v Auckland FC might not have been the A-League Men's grand final that fans expected, but history will be made regardless. The Sky Blues are hoping to be the first Australian team to win a title on New Zealand soil, and the Black Knights want to be the first Kiwi team to win it at all. Add to that the fact that the Knights are coached by a former Sydney FC legend? Spicy. In the AFL Scott Pendlebury will play game 433 but in case you missed it, there are other games too and some of them have serious significance. Auckland FC has used its underdog tag as motivation to pound Adelaide United 3-nil and make the A-League grand final. The tie was deadlocked heading into the return leg across the Tasman, but Black Knights coach Steve Corica says his team was fired up by critics saying they couldn't win. Auckland FC won the two-leg tie 4-1 on aggregate and will now meet the Newcastle Jets or Sydney FC in the grand final – a first-ever for a New Zealand men's club. Striker Sam Cosgrove found the back of the net with a penalty, and told Piney in terms of a satisfying performance, it was right up there. Auckland FC are through to the A-League semifinals are one of the most dramatic nights in the club's short history. Last weekend's elimination final against Melbourne FC went right through to penalties before goalkeeper Michael Woud's decisive save and a spot-kick from Dan Hall ticked the Black Knights over into a 7-6 win. The focus is now shifting to a two-legged semifinal against Adelaide United – the first leg kicking off tonight at Mt Smart. Woud told Piney that ultimately it comes down to luck a little bit, but there is still an element of strategy. “And, y'know, lucky enough, we got it right once, which was enough on the weekend to win the game.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A milestone moment for Auckland FC as they host Macarthur this afternoon, bringing up their 50th match in football's A-League. Defender Francis de Vries has been there every for game since the team's entry to the competition at the start of last season. He says it's a privilege to be part of the Black Knights squad. De Vris told Piney the team's consistency can be attributed to the way they break things down week by week and look at what each person needs to do individually and what the team needs to do as a whole. “If you can consistently do that and then have quality as we do within the squad, then it's a great recipe for success.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Education Department's workers union is pushing back after more than 100 technology-related employees lost their collective bargaining protections last month under an executive order citing national security and cybersecurity risks tied to their roles. About 120 employees in the agency's Office of the Chief Information Officer and Federal Student Aid's Office of the Chief Technology Officer were told late last month they no longer had union protections due to the nature of their positions, according to AFGE Local 252, which represents Education Department employees. The notification came nearly nine months after President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending collective bargaining rights for labor unions at various federal agencies. The order included some agencies in their entirety, along with some positions across the government that have a determined “primary function” involving intelligence, counterintelligence, investigative, or national security work. While the CTO and OCIO employees work with technology that could have cybersecurity ties, AFGE Local 252 argues this does not involve intelligence work that would warrant such a ban. “The Department of Education does not engage in any intelligence, counter-intelligence, investigative, or national security work,” AFGE 252 President Rachel Gittleman told FedScoop in an interview, suggesting the move is “just a way to strip labor rights of our federal workforce.” The FSA CTO office specifically does “work on technology” and products, but not information resources management, as the order states, Gittleman explained. FSA employees primarily focus on the office's website, income-driven repayment applications, FAFSA, and public service loan forgiveness applications. An American stealth fighter jet shot down an Iranian one-way attack drone in the Arabian Sea Tuesday after it “aggressively approached” a U.S. aircraft carrier “with unclear intent,” according to a statement from U.S. Central Command. Just hours after the shootdown, two Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ships accompanied by another unmanned aerial system — this one an Iranian Mohajer drone — approached a U.S.-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to board and seize the vessel, the statement from Centcom spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said. The dual incidents could spell increased tensions between Washington and Tehran after President Donald Trump threatened military action against Iran over its deadly suppression of protests last month and amid broader nuclear negotiations that could begin this week. The jet, an F-35C Lightning II, launched from the USS Abraham Lincoln, which was transiting the Arabian Sea roughly 500 miles from Iran's southern coast, Centcom said. The Centcom statement did not identify the unit the jet belongs to, but Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-314, the Black Knights, were photographed by the military operating off the Lincoln several days ago. The long-range Iranian drone — a Shahed-139 UAS known for its use in the Russia-Ukraine war and being reverse-engineered into a U.S. military one-way attack drone — “continued to fly toward the ship despite de-escalatory measures taken by U.S. forces operating in international waters,” the command said. The F-35C shot it down “in self-defense” and to protect the Lincoln and her crew, according to the statement, which said that no service members were harmed and no American equipment was damaged. In this episode, Mike takes a break from Northern Michigan stories and heads far north—way far north—to share memories from his year living in Keflavik, Iceland in the early 1990s while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Life on the NATO Base Mike talks about being assigned to Naval Air Station Keflavik, a joint-base environment with Air Force, Navy, Marines, and other NATO personnel. He recounts working with the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron – the Black Knights, maintaining F-15 electrical and environmental systems, and occasionally pulling duty in “FISneyland,” the alert barn for interceptor operations. The Journey to Get There Before Iceland came a whirlwind of military orders: Originally headed to remote Galena, Alaska, the Air Force cancelled those orders at the last minute. The next day, new orders arrived sending him to Keflavik instead. He completed F-15 training at Tyndall AFB in Florida, drove across the country, shipped his belongings, and ultimately hopped a Hawaiian Airlines DC-8 from Philadelphia to Iceland—a strange but memorable experience. Daily Life Before the Internet Mike recalls what it was like living overseas before modern connectivity: Expensive phone calls back to the States ($1.06 per minute!) Mail arriving once a week on the “rotator” DC-8 Magazines being precious entertainment Trading software, playing early PC games, and marveling at a 286 computer with 1MB of RAM A handful of TV channels including AFRTS, BBC, RTL4, and Sky News/Sports Food, Weather, and Icelandic Oddities Mike shares a mix of practical and quirky details: The legendary Icelandic hot dogs (a recurring theme!) Navy chow halls, the USO, and Friday fish fries with cod caught the same day Wild weather with winds over 100 mph, handrails along sidewalks, and dumpsters blowing around Surprisingly mild temperatures thanks to the Gulf Stream Extreme daylight shifts—near-constant darkness in winter and 24-hour light in summer Exploring Iceland During his tour, Mike bought a quirky little Škoda 120 and used it to explore beyond the base. He describes: Driving through the first roundabouts he'd ever seen Visiting the Hard Rock Café in Reykjavik, where one of his Idaho ham-radio license plates hung from the ceiling Cheap hops on Navy P-3 “airline-style” flights to London or Shannon, Ireland Customs rules that prohibited gas cans, extra cigarettes, and oddly… cassette tapes Looking Back Mike reflects on how much Iceland has changed—from relatively untouched in the early '90s to a major European travel destination today. He also notes a past interview he did on the All Things Iceland podcast in May 2020, sharing more of his experiences from that era. I appeared on an episode of All Things Iceland Episode 61 in May of 2020.

I guess I would describe the Radiant Wave Surger as having both "the power" and "the touch." And it certainly gets "ready for battle." But can it "beat the Black Knight" if it itself IS a Black Knight? Y'know, stupid question. On two fronts. First of all, of course a person can always defeat themselves. Second, why am I doing an extended bit about the theme of the pinball machine Black Knight 2000? You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media's Patreon! I suppose I can't fault the theming: these machines are, in fact, of a knightly aesthetic. Dylan makes the Shovel Knight comparison during this ep, and it's spot on. But something about it rubs me the wrong way. Not the designs- that's a whole separate matter. But these guys being called the Black Knights. Maybe it's just because they're Sauceless in Seattle? Not quite sure. I have encountered a lot of cool "black knight" characters, and these folks just don't rank. You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media's Patreon! Is Notre Dame in? Is Army out? What is going on?! With the Fighting Irish's loss to Syracuse and the Black Knights' loss to Colgate in their respective conference semifinals on Friday, the NCAA Tournament bracket forecast was shaken like a snow globe. To help sort it out, IL's Terry Foy brings on Mark Hart, better known as @fieldystick on X and a self-described "aspiring bracketologist" to discuss the data. Other questions they consider: Is Syracuse a lock? Does Maryland have the best résumé ever? Does the No. 2 seed go to the winner of Princeton-Cornell?
