Dave Watson, Everton's most-recent trophy-winning captain, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. The centre-half was the Blues' skipper when they defeated Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final and recalls an incredible story about what happened to the famous silverware that night after the Wembley victory. Scouser Watson, who grew up on Boundary Street, close to the new Everton Stadium, started his professional career across Stanley Park with Liverpool – for whom his brother Alex later played – but never made a first team appearance before joining Norwich City in 1980. While with the Canaries, he made his England debut, winning his first of 12 caps for the Three Lions, in a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium before lifting the League Cup the following year. He returned to his home city in 1986 when Howard Kendall snapped him up for Everton for a then club record £900,000 fee and was part of their last League Championship-winning side in his first season at Goodison Park. Now 63, Watson made 528 appearances for the Blues – the third highest in history behind Neville Southall (751) and Brian Labone (534) – and also had a stint as caretaker manager in 1997 following Joe Royle's exit before having a season in charge of Tranmere Rovers in 2001/02 to serve all three of Merseyside's professional football clubs. Thank god that's over... County signed off the 2024/25 season in dismal fashion, crashing to a 4-1 home defeat to Tranmere Rovers. Ed, Ollie and pod debutant Jane Brussalis discuss what went wrong. But we then pan out, to ask two of County's most loyal fans about their experiences of watching County on the road this season - what were the highs and lows, how many miles did they travel per point earned, and what's a typical away day like on the official Supporters' Club coach? Jane and Ollie do a fine job of plugging the experience - so be sure to follow the Supporters' Club on Twitter / Facebook, and consider giving it a go next season if you're not a frequent flyer already. As always, you can follow us via your social media platform of choice, and please also consider making a donation via our ko-fi page if you've enjoyed the podcasts this season - 5p an episode works out at just £2, which is a bargain! We remain grateful to the Riverside Sports Bar (the home of Welsh sports fans) for their valued support for the pod, and to Tinty & The Bucket Hats for letting us use Discoland as our theme tune. Our outro music is Virgo by Sean T.We'll be back at various points throughout the summer - but in the meantime, be good to yourselves and each other, and above all Keep It County! Hosted on Acast. Castore: How rejection from professional football kick-started a global sports brand

Guest post by Graham Ruddick Tom Beahon wanted to be a professional football player when he was growing up. This was not an unusual ambition for a teenager in Merseyside, north-west England. After all, this is the home of Liverpool and Everton, two of the biggest and most successful teams in the history of English football. Beahon was talented enough to be on the books of his local team, Tranmere Rovers, who are the smaller local rivals to Liverpool and Everton and play in the fourth tier of professional football in England. However, a conversation when he was just 20 years old would change Beahon's life forever. "I remember extremely vividly being called into the manager's office at Prenton Park, which is the stadium of Tranmere Rovers," Beahon says. "I'm being told that they're not going to renew my contract. You're 20 to 21 years old. You don't have a lot of life experience. You have literally dedicated your life up until that point to becoming a professional footballer. You've made huge sacrifices." When your friends are going out, drinking, partying, and doing all the fun stuff that people should be doing - you didn't do any of that, because you wanted to be a professional footballer. Then someone has sat across the table from you and told you that dream is no longer a reality. That's a big moment. "For me, it was a big thing that I'd let my dad down. My dad had come to watch all of my games. He sacrificed his own career. He wouldn't be in the office for long hours because he would take me to football and my brother to cricket." Beahon's life was now at a crossroads. Professional sport is littered with stories of young people who were spat out of the system at a young age and struggled. They usually leave with no educational qualifications because until this point they have dedicated their life to the sport. This was the case for Beahon, "I think you can essentially go one of two ways," he says. "That pain hurts you so much that you never want to be out of your comfort zone ever again. You want to do something where you're in control of the environment. You don't strive, because if you don't strive, you can't fail. I think a lot of people do that and I don't blame them at all. "Alternatively, you can go the other way. To my mind - my little uneducated brain at 20 years old - the worst has happened. But you realise that the sun still rises the next day. So what it instilled in me was whatever I do, I need to be in control of my own destiny. I'm not getting called into the manager's office again. Failure doesn't scare me. I've failed. The worst has happened. What scares me is not being in control." This story is the origins of Castore, the sportswear brand. Beahon would go on to found Castore with his brother Phil. They have built it into a company that is worth around £1 billion and is one of the fastest-growing sports brands in the world. Castore makes the kits for the Red Bull and McLaren Formula One team, Everton in the Premier League, and the English cricket team. In 2024, Beahon was asked to join the Prime Minister's Business Council in the UK, a collection of business leaders who advise the government on policy. He was surrounded by the chief executives of the biggest companies in the country. "Often there's this misconception of entrepreneurs that you have this lightbulb moment and all of a sudden the world changes," says Beahon." It's very rarely like that. So to have this setback [with football] - that is probably the seminal moment in my life. I wouldn't change it for the world." Beahon, now powered by a steely determination to succeed, got a job working in finance for a bank in London. After the financial crisis and a sharp rise in university tuition fees, companies started offering apprenticeship-style schemes to those who couldn't afford to go to university. His brother Phil also got a job in London and they lived together. When they got home from work in the evening they started discussing business ideas. ...

One of those managers setting up to try and achieve an FA Cup upset this week, is an old friend of the show and he's preparing for a trip to one of his old clubs. Micky Mellon takes his Oldham Athletic side to Tranmere Rovers in this weekend's FA Cup First Round. Whilst there's much excitement and just a handful of places in the pyramid between them, he admits promotion would probably be a priority over an FA Cup run. Rounding up the news of the week, Matt Badcock  of the Non League Paper is back ahead of another busy weekend for his team.

Crystal Palace, so impressive at the end of last season, are still without a victory after they were beaten 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. What's gone wrong? Matt Woosnam was there, maybe he knows? It's all about perspective though. Crystal Palace are in a far better position than Valencia. The former La Liga champions hit rock bottom of La Liga after they were beaten 1-3 at home by Las Palmas, who haven't won a game since February. They're getting relegated, aren't they?   Plus: Close your eyes. Close them tight. Now, tell me the current top three of the Champions League. Can you do it? Of course you can't. No-one can. That's why you need this podcast. We'll tell you who's playing who, but we'll also tell you what it all means. In so much as we can. I mean, what does anything mean, really? We're all just flesh-wraiths, briefly animated for reasons we know not, condemned to lurch across this plane of existence, trying to do as little damage as we can in the short time that we're here. We're marooned on a tiny rock that hurtles through a near-infinity of open space. So, juxtaposed against this harrowing reality, sure, I'll tell you what I think Girona against Slovan Bratislava means. Plus, will Virgil van Dijk sign a new contract and which rapper is trying to buy Tranmere Rovers? Need something to read?
