In this episode, I speak about the process of concentrating on a text. This means studying the text to locate the natural breaks in the text. The natural breaks will form the basis for our expository outline of the text. This process will also help reveal the subject and theme of the text. The subject and theme will become the subject and theme of our sermon. The natural breaks in the text are found by developing a mechanical outline of the text. This process may sound complicated, but it isn't hard. Making a mechanical outline takes concentration and time. As you read and meditate on the text look for conjunctions like, as, so, or but, nor, for, and, because, therefore, wherefore, etc. These words will help identify the natural breaks within the text. These conjunctions signal a continuation of a thought, a change of direction, or that what is being said now relates to what was previously been said. To help you in this process, I recommend you get a copy of the book Living By The Book by Howard G. Hendricks, and William D. Hendricks. The authors do a great job of explaining and illustrating this process. The book can be purchased here: https://www.amazon.com/Living-Book-Science-Reading-Bible/dp/0802408230/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3KH4WQHXDNES3&keywords=living+by+the+book&qid=1652453291&sprefix=living+by+the+book%2Caps%2C138&sr=8-1I will also post a mechanical outline of Psalm 1 on our Facebook page, located here: https://www.facebook.com/ThePreachingMattersPodcastRemember to subscribe to The Preaching Matters Podcast and leave a favorable review on your favorite podcast directory. Our website is: https://preachingmatters.buzzsprout.com/The podcast is a ministry of Dr. Alan Carr and The Sermon Notebook (http://www.sermonnotebook.org)
Season 3, Episode 2: Living By The Book with Kristen MeinzerKristen got into podcasting early, over a decade ago, as a film critic for WNYC, a passion she still lives through her show Movie Therapy with Rafer & Kristen. But it was when she launched By The Book Pod in 2017 with Jolenta Greenberg, that she became a household name. Over the last five years, they've reviewed over 70 self help books, living, as the name suggests, by the book, for two weeks at a time. After their fiftieth book, they wrote a book of their own How To Be Fine, which you can get at CYS' Bookshop page. She's a regular contributor to Pop Culture Happy Hour on NPR and she also hosts The Royal Report. Kristen was named a 2020 Woman of the Year by The Women's Center in Washington DC and one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Podcasting by Quill in 2021. Her incredibly helpful book for people new to podcasting, So You Want to Start a Podcast, won the Audie Award for best business/personal development audiobook of 2020. As she hints on this show, there is more on the way too so stay tuned! Some are very excited about old age because of the promise of retirement. Others see themselves becoming less useful in the world around them. God has plans and promises for senior saints. He instructs them to pass on their wisdom to those younger than themselves in the church, and to not waste the later years of their lives.
In Ephesians 5, Paul charges husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church. Husbands are called to love their wives with the goal of presenting them holy to Christ in the last day. It would be impossible for husbands to act like Christ in their own strength alone. Rather than trying harder, husbands need to look to Christ for the strength to follow in his footsteps and place the needs of their wives above their own needs.
Submission is one of the dirtiest words in contemporary culture. With the recent focus on women's rights and the coming to light of many cases of abuse, many call for the elimination of God's design for leadership and submission in marriage. But even if the attitude of our culture may change, God's Word does not. In Ephesians, Paul identifies that Jesus Christ is the head of all things, especially the church. And just like the church submits to Jesus as her head, so also wives should submit to husbands as their God-given head. This call to submission is an act of faith in Jesus and is glorifying to God.
Feminism has thrust femininity into the spotlight in American culture over the last several decades. The movement brings into question what it means to be a woman, how women should be treated, and what are the differences and similarities between men and women. The Bible provides the true answers to these questions. Though our culture or our inner desires may push against it, God's design remains best.
Today's masculinity is fraught with images of machismo, abuse, ineptitude, and passivity. But these are a result of the fall, not of true manhood. God calls men not to follow Adam, but Jesus, who is the second Adam and the perfect man. True masculinity is seen in servant hearted love and leadership.
God designed and instituted marriage to bless his people and glorify his name. Often, however, due to our own desires or the influence of our culture, we minimize or misuse what God has given us. Marriage is a gift from God, and it is easy to idolize it rather than enjoying it as such. There are high callings in marriage to serve, love, and help a spouse or children, and it is easy to try to avoid these duties and rather look to our own interests. But if we look to Scripture and see the beauty of the gospel that marriage points to, we will instead orient our worldview around God's revealed truth.
Everyone bases their life on something. Some find their authority in themselves, making decisions that serve their own desires. Some live with the world as their authority, influenced by the popular opinions of the day. But Christians must base their lives on the Word of God. Christians should live by the book in order to glorify God, to make disciples, and to grow in joy.
