Liz and Sarah talk to the fabulous podcast hosts, Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg, about the new season of How To Be Fine, which dives into the loneliness epidemic and the sometimes fraught nature of friendship. What advice to they have for making friends as an adult? Do they ascribe to the idea of having a friend for “a reason, a season, or a lifetime?” In The Mailroom, Liz and Sarah answer a question about how to stay excited about material that may be put out into the world months (or even years) after you're done working on it. This week's Hollywood Hack comes from friend of the pod, TV writer Bill Krebs: keep a folder of encouraging words to look at when you're feeling down. Read the full transcript here. Why does it seem that many people read self-help books with no intention of actually doing what the books prescribe? Why are self-help books often less clear than it seems they ought to be? What are self-help books actually designed to do? Why do self-help authors continue to write as though their ideas will help everyone when it seems fairly obvious that no single self-help book has ever been a global panacea? Should self-help advice differ based on the gender of the receiver? How does life coaching differ from self-help? How does therapy differ both from life coaching and from self-help? Should therapists fire their clients once the clients' problems have been solved? Should therapists give homework? Kristen Meinzer is a force to be reckoned with. She is an award-winning podcaster with millions of downloads, a culture critic who frequently appears on TV (especially to talk about the royal family!), and an author whose book "How to Be Fine" was an Audible #1 Bestseller in 2021. Aside from her incredible career, Kristen is also a Korean adoptee. Born in Korea but raised in Minnesota, she grew up disconnected from the country and culture she was born into while raised in a mostly white family and environment. Kristen helps us understand the connection between the end of the Korean War and the over 200,000 Korean adoptees in the US, and why not all of these adoptees are eager to take up the Korean government's offer of dual citizenship. From her reverse culture shock going to Korean culture camp as a kid, to constantly confusing people with her Minnesotan accent, to whether she feels the call to reconnect with Korea and her biological family, we talk about it all. While no two adoptee experiences are exactly alike, we are so grateful to Kristen for sharing her story and hope that her perspective can help inspire other adoptees struggling with reconciling their identities, as well as non-adoptees to learn more about what this experience is like. Do you have a question for Kristen, or are you an adoptee yourself? Let us know in the comments on our social media! Follow us on TikTok at @butwhereareyoureallyfrom and on Instagram at @wherareyoufrompod Kristen co-hosts the podcast "How to Be Fine" with Jolenta Greenberg, where they discuss and critique all kinds of wellness fads and give advice on how you can get closer to being fine. On the Magnum, Dan brings on author and comedian Jolenta Greenberg. Jolenta co-hosts: How to be Fine, which analyzes self-help and wellness culture. Fine is just fine. That's the premise of a book and podcast taking aim at the self-development and wellness industries. Marketresearch.com estimates the self-improvement industry is worth more than $10 billion a year. It exploded virtually during the pandemic. Jolenta Greenberg, a comedian and self-described reality TV historian, and Kristen Meinzer, a culture critic, lived by 100 self-improvement books. They evaluated the good, the bad and the truly ridiculous. Their adventures were the basis for a podcast called "By the Book." Their big conclusion? Being fine is just fine. Greenberg and Meinzer went on to write the book "How to be Fine" and now co-host a podcast by the same name that offers advice to listeners while tackling other wellness trends. "Look at the credentials of who is giving you advice. That's my first pointer, and the first thing I sort of learned to do once I started really reading some advice that was out there. Look at the source. Is the person a doctor? Is it an honorary doctorate? Did they actually go to school to become a doctor? Just make sure the person who's giving you advice is someone you actually trust before you jump all in," Greenberg said. On this Dying to Ask: The danger of "positive thinking" your way out of jams. How to evaluate a motivational speaker. Techniques to critically evaluate whether a self-help program is worth your time and money Jolenta and Kristen's picks for the worst self-help books on the NY Times Best Seller's List (hint: you'll recognize a few!)
Advice critics Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg spent years living by and critiquing advice from self-help books for their podcast By The Book. Today: Sarah and the swarm of squirrels, Jolenta Greenberg joined us to talk about her projects, podcasts, self-help books, and more - she's great! Also today - milk bandits, croc king, and how often do you wash your bath towel? Have a great weekend!
There's "I didn't realize I was queer!" and then there's "An actual pastor's kid had to inform me that I was queer!" Comedian and podcast host Jolenta Greenberg (How to Be Fine) hilariously falls into the second category. Although Jolenta spent all of high school in blissful obliviousness, the evidence of her bisexuality had been piling up since childhood, notably with simultaneous crushes on LeVar Burton and a female side character on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. But despite frequently hooking up with her female friends and regularly attending a queer club, Jolenta genuinely believed that she was just a REALLY good ally! She and Nicole bond over being bi women in straight-facing marriages, and Jolenta discusses the "pang" she sometimes feels about not having put a label on her sexuality sooner. Today, Kristen and Jolenta share a special preview of the new audiobook Inside Voice: My Obsession with How We Sound by writer-director-producer Lake Bell. If you hate hearing the sound of your voice, you're not alone. In Inside Voice, Lake finds out why we cringe when we hear our own voices. She peels back the social science, cultural constructs, quirks, and psychology around a piece of our identity from which we rarely take much inventory...but probably should. What if you could fall in love, or forge deep connections in just 45 minutes? Our guests, Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg of By The Book podcast try out 36 questions with their partners to see if they can strengthen their connection. Episode summary: There are 36 questions that have been shown over and over again in lab studies to help people fall in love or form fast connections. In this week's episode, we bring back Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg of By the Book podcast*.* They recruit their husbands to ask and answer these questions and then fill us in on the surprising ways they helped each of their relationships. Later, we hear from psychologists Arthur and Elaine Aron, the married duo who co-created the 36 questions this practice is based on. They explain the principles behind the questions, so you can come up with your own conversation starters to foster closeness with anyone — family, friends, or your partner. Practice: 36 Questions for Increasing Closeness Identify someone with whom you'd like to become closer. Find a time when you both have about 45 minutes to meet in person. Take 15 minutes answering the questions in Set I below. Each person should answer every question, but alternate who answers first. If you don't finish the set in 15 minutes, move on to Set II. Repeat the steps above for sets II and III. Set I (sample) 1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest? 2. Would you like to be famous? In what way? Set II (sample) 13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know? 14. Is there something that you've dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven't you done it? Set III (sample) 25. Make three true “we” statements each. For instance, “We are both in this room feeling…” 26. Complete this sentence: “I wish I had someone with whom I could share…” Learn more about this practice at Greater Good In Action: https://ggia.berkeley.edu/practice/36_questions_for_increasing_closeness Today's guests: Kristen Meinzer is an audio producer and pop culture podcast host.
