We can approach the season with confidence, knowing the Bible contains a vast repository of spiritual truth related to the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. This truth can transform December from being a time of wondering what we will preach this year into a time of how will I preach everything I have already seen. Support the showSubscribe to this podcast. 135 - Ten Mistakes To Avoid In Preaching

Send us a textPreaching is a powerful, God-given tool for inspiring, motivating, convicting, and comforting people. But preaching can also be dangerous. We can hurt people, lead them astray, and cause them much confusion. Here are ten mistakes every preacher should avoid while preaching:1. Using offensive language or engaging in hate speech: Preachers should avoid using language that is discriminatory against or harmful to a particular group of people. We can say what needs to be said without offending people. Some people strive to shock people when they preach. Only a foolish person is controversial, for controversy's sake. 2. Being too political: While addressing social issues from the pulpit is essential, preachers should avoid endorsing specific political parties or candidates.3. Ignoring the audience: Preachers should try to connect with their audience and avoid speaking condescendingly or dismissively. Make eye contact. Address them with respect. 4. Lacking preparation: Preachers should take the time to prepare their sermons thoroughly so they can deliver a clear and concise message.5. Being insensitive to the congregation's needs: Preachers should be mindful that members of their congregation may be dealing with personal issues and should avoid making insensitive comments.6. Being judgmental: Preachers should avoid making sweeping judgments about people based on their beliefs or actions.7. Using too much humor: While humor can effectively engage an audience, preachers should avoid using it excessively or inappropriately.8. Preaching for too long: Long sermons can be tiring and may cause the audience to lose focus. Preachers should aim to keep their sermons to a reasonable length.9. In today's episode, I discuss the difference between letting the Bible say what it says and making it say what the preacher wants it to. We will also discuss the differences between exegesis and eisegesis. This is not a trivial matter. It is akin to the differences between lightning and a lightning bug.I want to make a strong case in favor of exegesis. When we practice exegesis, we "lead out" of the text, the truth placed there by the inspiration of God. When we practice eisegesis, we "lead into" the text ideas that form in our human minds. Listen to the episode, and decide what you want to be: a preacher who tells you what God said in his Word, or one who reads into the Bible what he wants it to say. The choice seems cut and dried to me. Let me know what you think.Support the Show.Subscribe to this podcast. Leave us a review. Point your friends to this podcast.Contact me at: alancarr@gmail.com. Does the Old Testament still matter in our modern culture? Of course, it does! In this episode, I discuss three reasons why the Old Testament still matters in modern preaching. We will deal with the following reasons:1.  The Old Testament is the foundation for the work of Jesus.2.  Believers find their true identity in the Old Testament.3.  The Old Testament teaches believers how to live to the glory of God. If you are convinced, like I am, that the Old Testament still matters, listen to this episode and let me know what you think. You should also listen if you believe the Old Testament can be jettisoned. Who knows? You might change your mind.Support the showSubscribe to this podcast. Leave us a review. Are our sermons all about Jesus, or are they about all sorts of other things? The truth is, we miss Jesus far more often than we want to admit. Let's talk about it.In this episode, we will discuss where we often miss Jesus in the text and how we can avoid this. Support the showSubscribe to this podcast. Leave us a review. Compassion is a rare trait in our society. Many people struggle to find support during difficult times in their lives. Unfortunately, even churches often lack genuine compassion. Those who have been hurt and broken by life come to church seeking relief and guidance from God's Word, hoping to find comfort. Instead, they are often met with judgment, condemnation, and harsh criticism. This is not what they need, and it only makes things worse. In this episode, we discuss how to cultivate compassion. We must listen, pray, and preach with a compassionate heart so that we may provide the support and healing that people need. Let me know what you think. Thanks for listening.Support the showSubscribe to this podcast. Leave us a review. Point your friends to this podcast.Contact me at: alancarr@gmail.com.
