Season 3, Episode 4: Rethinking Manliness Through Vulnerability with JT FrankJT Frank is a proud veteran and first responder. He started his career in the United States Air Force and has spent the last 23 years protecting and serving his country as a civilian federal employee. Through his extensive time in the military and as a first responder, he has become intimately familiar with both the positive and negative lifestyle and habits associated with these career fields. Unfortunately for JT, the negative habits progressively played a larger role in his life. Through trial and error, JT realized, not only do these habits not serve him personally, they are detrimental to the long-term success and mental health of the veteran and first responder community. In 2019, JT came to crossroads in his life where, through personal reflection, he looked inwardly at what was holding him back from being the best possible version of himself. Through his exploration, JT realized the power of habit building, both negative and positive ones, in relation to happiness and success. He made major healthy lifestyle changes building better habits for himself, which have positively impacted his family, work and overall wellbeing.JT's lifestyle changes inspired him to create the Consequence of Habit podcast in 2020 with the overall goal of empowering individuals and communities by bringing awareness to the impact habits have on mental health, success and the environment. Since then, he has had the honor of interviewing a diverse range of guests from high-ranking military officers to professional athletes to your seemingly average everyday person. The common thread in all of JT's interviews is that his guests have made positive changes in their own lives by looking inwardly, examining their habits and making changes. JT has taken these lessons, pinpointed what worked, and incorporated them into something that benefits a broader audience. In late 2020, JT founded Consequence of Habit Inc, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to helping others establish habits to succeed and improve mental health. JT accomplishes this by continually providing stories of hope, inspiration and positive change through the CoH podcast. JT also leads CoH experiential events, short volunteer hands-on teamwork and leadership experiences that facilitate connection, purpose and challenge. What started as JT's personal journey has now become a passion to help others make positive changes in their own lives, the community, and the environment.Learn more at https://www.consequenceofhabit.org/ and https://www.consequenceofhabit.org/Choose Your Struggle Presents: Made It, Season 1, Stay Savage dropped April 29th! On this special feed drop episode of the Choose Your Struggle Podcast, Jay plays a story from the podcast Abortion, With Love Titled To My Strength followed by a conversation between Omkari Williams and Renee Brown Sherman on Ms. Williams' podcast Stepping Intro Truth. Ms. Williams is a storyteller who teaches women how to use their stories to make a change. Ms. Brown Sherman is the Founder and Executive Director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions, increasing the spectrum of abortion storytellers in the public sphere, and shifting the way the media understands the context and complexity of accessing abortion care. After Monday night's leak, Jay didn't feel comfortable putting out the episode intended for this week. This moment is too big; too important. We have to be honest with what's happening in this country. This ruling will simply be the latest attack on everyone who isn't white, rich, and male in this country perpetrated by the Republican Party and allowed by the ineptitude and/or willful ignorance of the Democratic Party. Our system is broken and we're seeing real consequences. Jay and his wife Lauren attended a march Tuesday night in their city of Philadelphia that was sponsored by the organization behind the series of Women's Marches, and the Socialist Party. The march called for numerous outcomes including protecting the riot of abortion for all and the formation of a new party that accurately represents those the Democrats pretend to represent. If you or someone you love needs more info on an abortion, please visit your local Planned Parenthood. We'll be back with a regular episode (and talking about the success of Made It, Season 1) next week. Choose Your Struggle. Season 3, Episode 2: Living By The Book with Kristen MeinzerKristen got into podcasting early, over a decade ago, as a film critic for WNYC, a passion she still lives through her show Movie Therapy with Rafer & Kristen. But it was when she launched By The Book Pod in 2017 with Jolenta Greenberg, that she became a household name. Over the last five years, they've reviewed over 70 self help books, living, as the name suggests, by the book, for two weeks at a time. After their fiftieth book, they wrote a book of their own How To Be Fine, which you can get at CYS' Bookshop page. She's a regular contributor to Pop Culture Happy Hour on NPR and she also hosts The Royal Report. Kristen was named a 2020 Woman of the Year by The Women's Center in Washington DC and one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Podcasting by Quill in 2021. Her incredibly helpful book for people new to podcasting, So You Want to Start a Podcast, won the Audie Award for best business/personal development audiobook of 2020. As she hints on this show, there is more on the way too so stay tuned! Season 2, Episode 85Leading With Empathy In Addiction Treatment With Dr. Nzinga HarrisonThe season finale of the 2nd season of the Choose Your Struggle podcast is here! It's been an amazing season but all good things come to an end.The Season Finale features Jay chatting with Dr. Nzinga Harrison, the host of one of his favorite podcasts In Recovery! She's also the Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Eleanor Health and co-founder of Physicians for Criminal Justice Reform. A true leader, Dr. Harrison is a shining example of how you can treat Addiction from a place of love and care. You can find out more about Dr. Harrison and listen to In Recovery at https://lemonadamedia.com/show/inrecovery/ and http://www.nzingaharrisonmd.com/. *** one note. Jay mentions an article he read that says we need to basically double how many mental health professionals are out there to adequately address the need. Dr. Harrison asked him for the source of that article and he can't find it! So he wants everyone to know he won't be using that stat anymore... unless someone knows where he read it and can send him the study it's from!Thank you to everyone who checked out the show this season. Shay is one of the co-founders of youturn (you heard from another co-founder last season in Elizabeth McKissick), an organization based in South Carolina that seeks to help educate around the issues of Mental Health and Substance Misuse with their media platform. It's a great way for people to learn about substance use and misuse in a safe setting that employers can provide for their workers and organizations can sign their members up for. And if that wasn't enough, I'm on an episode myself, from early 2020. Season 2, Episode 68Monday Motivation: Michael Pollan's New Book and The True Meaning of Media HypeThis week's Monday Motivation is Jay chatting about Michael Pollan's new book, This Is Your Mind On Plants. It's not a bad book. In fact, as one listener put it, parts of it were compelling, other parts simply were not. Which is fine! Jay's feelings about the book actually have little to do with the book itself. More, he was frustrated with how much press this book got as we only get a few books on drug use and drug policy a year that get any sort of focus. In summation, Jay's frustration was with how the media picked a very SAFE book on drug use by an old, rich, white guy to be one of the few that got support. Which, let's be honest, isn't surprising. And, as Jay shares, he's simply DONE with any conversation about these topics being labeled a positive. We need to move on to the next step, where simply talking about this isn't good enough. We need to go further. For other, better, options, check out the Bookshop link below! Season 2, Episode 67Silenced By Stigma Over Comprehensive Sex Education with Justine Ang FonteThis week, Jay chats with Justine Ang Fonte. You may have heard of her. As she jokes early in the interview, she's been target #1 by right-wing trolls since becoming internet famous over... simply existing. Simply doing her job. Teaching children honest and fact-based education around sex and health. Justine was, until this spring, a sex and health educator in a New York school. Unfortunately, her school allowed her not only to be the target of harassment by parents but, eventually, The New York Post and other trash "journalism". Justine resigned and soon after began speaking out about this experience and how stigma over sex is allowed to silence education and keep us from making progress on a whole host of important issues. We also talk about how stupid the idea of 'cancel culture' is (Justine had her life upended and received death threats over teaching health, Louis C.K. is headlining Madison Square Garden, who was really canceled?) and how we can fix the horrible issue of stigma around sex holding back comprehensive and healthy education. Spoiler alert, it's going to take a lot of work and parents being willing to educate themselves. We'll see... don't hold your breath. But, as Justine says in this conversation, these lessons could help prevent such famous examples of abuse as the aforementioned Louis C.K., The Catholic Church, and the Boy Scouts and on and on and on and on. Learn more about Justine at her website, https://www.justinefonte.com/.Today's Good Egg: Send someone food, not thoughts and prayers, which are useless. They're useless. Stop it. Season 2, Episode 63Special Episode: Jay's A Day in the Life PerformenceThis week, we're taking a week off from putting out interviews to release something very special to us. On July 7th, Choose Your Struggle founder and host of this podcast Jay Shifman told a story for our series A Day in the Life. He told what he calls the Wendy story, about the night, while in the Austen Riggs psychiatric inpatient facility, he stopped his closest friend there from killing herself. It was a hard story to tell, it's a hard story to hear, and we recommend caution if you're in a rough spot. But we're so, so, so proud of Jay for telling this story. And the story has a few really important messages everyone needs to hear. Be there for each other. Know that you never know what people are going through. Spread love. Choose Your Struggle. Also, a post from Jay's Facebook page this week is oddly perfect for this story. Check it out. This episode is dedicated to the memories of Robyn Faye Weinstein and Robin Williams (who passed away this week in 2014). Today's Good Egg: Reach out. Just do it. Let people know how you feel about them and that you love them. Because you never know.
