Dr. Susan Boyd is a scholar/activist and Distinguished Professor emerita at the University of Victoria. Her research examines a variety of topics related to the history of drug prohibition and resistance to it, drug law and policy, including maternal drug use, maternal/state conflicts, film and culture, radio and print media, heroin assisted-treatment, community-based research and qualitative research methodology. Her latest book, Heroin: An Illustrated History (Fernwood, 2022), is an illustrated history of two centuries of Canadian heroin regulation that reveals the deep roots of our current failure to address the overdose death epidemic caused by criminalizing and pathologizing drug users and resisting harm-reduction policies. From its discovery in 1898, heroin was prescribed for therapeutic use in Canada. With little evidence of the harm of heroin, its prohibition has been tied up with colonization and systemic racism as well as class and gender injustice. Using documentary evidence and the experiences of people who use/used heroin, drug user unions and harm-reduction advocates, Boyd argues that in order to create a more just future, prohibition and punitive policies that drive the illegal overdose crisis must end. Today's host is Jay Shifman. Jay Shifman is a vulnerable storyteller, stigma-destroying speaker, podcaster, and event host. Jay Shifman is an open book. A vulnerable storyteller and stigma-destroying speaker, podcaster, and event host, Jay's story of struggle is familiar to the millions of people the world over who also struggle with issues of mental health, substance misuse, and addiction. The survivor of two suicide attempts and an overdose and now in long-term recovery, it is Jay's mission to encourage difficult conversations and honest education concerning these and similar struggles. Jay founded his company, Choose Your Struggle, in 2015 with two distinct goals: ending stigma and promoting honest and fact-based education around the topics of Mental Health, Substance Misuse & Recovery, and Drug Use & Policy. Looking to make these conversations even more accessible, Jay launched the Choose Your Struggle podcast in early 2020.  In Spring, 2022, Choose Your Struggle dropped Made It, Season 1: Stay Savage, a serial-style podcast documentary on Sarah Laurel and the Philadelphia Harm Reduction organization Savage Sisters. A fervent believer in radical honesty and the simple fact that neither struggle nor recovery should be treated as a one-size fits all experience, Jay uses his voice, and his platforms to educate, entertain, and empower. Holding a BA in Psychology from Northern Kentucky University and with over a decade of lived and professional experience in the field, Jay has put in numerous hours of independent learning acquiring certifications in mental health, substance misuse and addiction, and drug policy. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Lauren, and their dog, Nell. For more information, visit: https://jay.campsite.bio/ or find him on your favorite social media platform.

I'm so honored to have Jay Shifman on The Be Ruthless Show today. Jay is a passionate soul making noise maker who is breaking stigmas by sharing his own story.

Season 3, Episode 4: Rethinking Manliness Through Vulnerability with JT FrankJT Frank is a proud veteran and first responder. He started his career in the United States Air Force and has spent the last 23 years protecting and serving his country as a civilian federal employee. Through his extensive time in the military and as a first responder, he has become intimately familiar with both the positive and negative lifestyle and habits associated with these career fields. Unfortunately for JT, the negative habits progressively played a larger role in his life.  Through trial and error, JT realized, not only do these habits not serve him personally, they are detrimental to the long-term success and mental health of the veteran and first responder community. In 2019, JT came to crossroads in his life where, through personal reflection, he looked inwardly at what was holding him back from being the best possible version of himself. Through his exploration, JT realized the power of habit building, both negative and positive ones, in relation to happiness and success. He made major healthy lifestyle changes building better habits for himself, which have positively impacted his family, work and overall wellbeing.JT's lifestyle changes inspired him to create the Consequence of Habit podcast in 2020 with the overall goal of empowering individuals and communities by bringing awareness to the impact habits have on mental health, success and the environment. Since then, he has had the honor of interviewing a diverse range of guests from high-ranking military officers to professional athletes to your seemingly average everyday person. The common thread in all of JT's interviews is that his guests have made positive changes in their own lives by looking inwardly, examining their habits and making changes. JT has taken these lessons, pinpointed what worked, and incorporated them into something that benefits a broader audience. In late 2020, JT founded Consequence of Habit Inc, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to helping others establish habits to succeed and improve mental health. JT accomplishes this by continually providing stories of hope, inspiration and positive change through the CoH podcast. JT also leads CoH experiential events, short volunteer hands-on teamwork and leadership experiences that facilitate connection, purpose and challenge.  What started as JT's personal journey has now become a passion to help others make positive changes in their own lives, the community, and the environment.Learn more at https://www.consequenceofhabit.org/ and https://www.consequenceofhabit.org/Choose Your Struggle Presents: Made It, Season 1, Stay Savage dropped April 29th! On this special feed drop episode of the Choose Your Struggle Podcast, Jay plays a story from the podcast Abortion, With Love Titled To My Strength followed by a conversation between Omkari Williams and Renee Brown Sherman on Ms. Williams' podcast Stepping Intro Truth. Ms. Williams is a storyteller who teaches women how to use their stories to make a change. Ms. Brown Sherman is the Founder and Executive Director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions, increasing the spectrum of abortion storytellers in the public sphere, and shifting the way the media understands the context and complexity of accessing abortion care. After Monday night's leak, Jay didn't feel comfortable putting out the episode intended for this week. This moment is too big; too important. We have to be honest with what's happening in this country. This ruling will simply be the latest attack on everyone who isn't white, rich, and male in this country perpetrated by the Republican Party and allowed by the ineptitude and/or willful ignorance of the Democratic Party. Our system is broken and we're seeing real consequences. Jay and his wife Lauren attended a march Tuesday night in their city of Philadelphia that was sponsored by the organization behind the series of Women's Marches, and the Socialist Party. The march called for numerous outcomes including protecting the riot of abortion for all and the formation of a new party that accurately represents those the Democrats pretend to represent. Season 3, Episode 2: Living By The Book with Kristen MeinzerKristen got into podcasting early, over a decade ago, as a film critic for WNYC, a passion she still lives through her show Movie Therapy with Rafer & Kristen. But it was when she launched By The Book Pod in 2017 with Jolenta Greenberg, that she became a household name. Over the last five years, they've reviewed over 70 self help books, living, as the name suggests, by the book, for two weeks at a time. After their fiftieth book, they wrote a book of their own How To Be Fine, which you can get at CYS' Bookshop page. She's a regular contributor to Pop Culture Happy Hour on NPR and she also hosts The Royal Report. Kristen was named a 2020 Woman of the Year by The Women's Center in Washington DC and one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Podcasting by Quill in 2021. Her incredibly helpful book for people new to podcasting, So You Want to Start a Podcast, won the Audie Award for best business/personal development audiobook of 2020. As she hints on this show, there is more on the way too so stay tuned! Mental Health: How We Can Best Support the Men in Our Lives Feat. Jay Shifman | POW51

Pieces of a Woman

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2022 40:27

Summary: In this episode, Cristie and DeAnna are diving deep into men's mental health and how we can better support the men in our lives. Mental health advocate, Jay Shifman, joins us as he shares the steps we can take to create a safe space, be better listeners, and have uncomfortable conversations with our loved ones. Learn More About Jay: Jay Shifman is an open book. A fervent believer in radical honesty and the simple fact that neither struggle nor recovery should be treated as a one-size-fits-all experience, Jay uses his voice, and his platforms to educate, entertain, and empower. In 2021, Jay added a new line to his resume when he was invited to join the roster of podcast hosts for the Drugs, Addiction, and Recovery channel on the New Books Network. Key Takeaways: [04:01] How to communicate with a loved one who may be struggling with their mental health [06:28] Why learning to vocalize emotions is like training a muscle [07:08] 3 topics that 95% of male friendships revolve around  [12:10] How to create a safe environment that allows for emotional expression  [14:20] The mindfulness exercise to become more comfortable sharing your emotions [17:24 ] The #1 realization you need to be aware of in order to give someone the space to open up to you [20:39] How to have more self-awareness when handling tough conversations  [26:06] Advice for the men who have a hard time opening up and communicating [28:49] Society, ADHD, and misdiagnosis [32:17] The negative and positive effects of social media and our mental health Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Learn more about Jay on his https://www.jayshifman.com/ (website). Dead Weight: A Memoir in Essays (Northwestern UP, 2022) chronicles the improbable turnaround of a drug smuggler who, after being sentenced to eight years in state prison, returned to society to earn a PhD in creative writing and become the only tenured professor in the United States with seven felony convictions. Randall Horton's visceral essays highlight the difficulties of trying to change one's life for the better, how the weight of felony convictions never dissipates. The memoir begins with a conversation between Horton and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man statue in New York City. Their imagined dialogue examines the psychological impact of racism on Black men and boys, including Horton's separation from his mother, immediately after his birth, in a segregated Alabama hospital. From his current life as a professor and prison reformer, Horton looks back on his experiences as a drug smuggler and trafficker during the 1980s-1990s as well as the many obstacles he faced after his release. He also examines the lasting impact of his drug activity on those around him, reflecting on the allure of economic freedom and the mental escapism that cocaine provided, an allure so strong that both sellers and users were willing to risk prison. Horton shares historical context and vivid details about people caught in the war on drugs who became unsuspecting protagonists in somebody else's melodrama. Lyrical and gripping, Dead Weight reveals the lifelong effects of one man's incarceration on his psyche, his memories, and his daily experience of American society. Dr. Horton is a Professor of English at the University of New Haven.  Jay Shifman is a vulnerable storyteller, a stigma-destroying speaker, and the founder of Choose Your Struggle podcast. A guy in long-term recovery, Jay is dedicated to ending stigma and promoting fact-based education around Mental Health, Substance Misuse & Recovery, and Drug Use & Policy.
