Just five per cent of people with a learning difference are in paid work, something highlighted by the recent case of Tom Boyd, who was let go by Morrisons after his family asked that he be paid for his work. That case spurred Liz Warner, a former CEO of Comic Relief, into action. Because the same thing had happened to her son and, we can all agree, needs to stop happening. Liz is launching a new initiative in the new year aimed to double the amount of people with a learning difference in paid work, so Hannah got on the Zoom to find out more. Originally aired - May 18, 2020After running her first marathon in Tokyo after the loss of her father, Liz grew a deep love of running as a form of therapy and exercise. She had a self-proclaimed “addiction” for the high of crossing the finish line after over 26 miles of running, especially in places that were far from her hometown of Atlanta. As she approached her 30th birthday while living in Paris, she decided to join her passion for travel and marathons into an adventure of a lifetime! She committed to run 30 marathons in 30 different countries by the time she turns 30 in June of 2020. Each marathon focused on a different charity and she's currently raising $100,000 to donate to various causes. I talk with Liz Warner, an inspiring traveler and runner. In early 2019, Liz launched Run to Reach, an 18-month fundraising campaign to run 30 marathons in 30 countries before turning 30. Her goal was to raise money to support local women-empowerment organizations in each country. We talked only a few days after she successfully completed her project.
