Acclaimed biographer Judith Mackrell makes a second visit to Standard Issue to chat about the Johns, a pair of siblings who went from an unhappy home in Wales to become two of the greatest British painters of the Edwardian period. She chats to Hannah about the very different but intertwined lives of Gwen and Augustus and why their work isn't always easy to find. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Feminist writer, campaigner, and one of Standard Issue's firm favourites, Laura Bates's latest non-fiction is called The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny. Anyone fretting about the good old age of sexism, fret ye not, because it is still alive and kicking and very much fuelling and influencing the new one. And it's impossible to stress enough how critical a moment right now is: this isn't futuristic, distant and improbable amplified version of the same old, same old, it's already affecting women and girls, and minority groups. Our Mick chats to Laura about that, about the sheer scale of what's happening, the regressive nature of breakneck “progress”, the problem with ‘outliers', and about how men's wants and wallets trump women's rights and safety every time. The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny is published by Simon & Schuster on May 15, but available for pre-order now. laurabates.co.uk Learn more about your ad choices. Episode #144 of The Shallow End is chock full of vitamins and other nutrients! (Okay. It's not. But it is entertaining as hell.) Lindsay's story comes to us from Kissimmee, FL, where a young woman and her boyfriend decided to celebrate the man's birthday at a local motel by ordering a pizza delivered to their room. Everything was going swimmingly – until the police were called. Find out why! (Note: It involves drivers who will stop at nothing to drive home their opinions on the importance of gratuity.) Then Jethro takes us to the mountains above Tucson, AZ, where a gentleman was enjoying the sweeping views of the city before a late monsoon rain blew in to wash away the summer heat. What an unfortunate time to have to answer nature's call. No worries! When you're a male, the whole Earth is your bathroom! (Shame about the timing of that lighting strike!) Trump's back in the White House, so what better time for a big quiz about what's real news and what Hannah has just made up? Good luck, Jen. Also, there's more on the Online Safety Act, the ceasefire in Gaza and women's prizes in sport. And in Jenny Off The Blocks, we're talking tennis, cricket and what's in that little jar they win in The Ashes. Plus, if you're a Standard Issue supporter, it's time for some more Sarah Millican's Light Relief. You're welcome! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Fiona MacKenzie is Standard Issue's original ‘random angry woman', a tag she gave herself when she first came on the pod to talk about her campaign, We Can't Consent To This. Her work led to a change in the law and the scrapping of the ‘rough sex defence'. Fiona's now exploring how Westminster can work better for women with The Other Half, a non-partisan think tank developing policy in women's interests and spanning public life, justice, Mothers and Others. This includes assisted dying safeguards to protect the lives of vulnerable women, which, as the officially titled Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill – more commonly known as the assisted dying bill – passes through Parliament, Fiona and Mick focus on in this interview. The Other Half wants to hear from women in order to move forward in helping create policy that considers and benefits women, so take five minutes to fill in a couple of the surveys you'll find on the website. theotherhalf.uk Learn more about your ad choices. Season 2 Finale Alert; Coming off a stellar cameo in season 3 of The Bear and every other day a different celebrity is spotted in an Uncle Paulie's Deli garment, there might not be a better person than Paulie James right now to really ask, “what's beef…” Paulie was the first person to trust us at Standard Issue, and create some collaborative garments together back in 2018. That meant a lot. We are psyched to finally find out who put forth the “Uncle Paulie” alias, as well as hear how the Queens, New York inspired deli has blossomed in the city of Angels. Thank you to Paulie for loaning us his story for the conclusion of season 2. We thank yall for tuning in as well!!! Season 3 coming soon...
Episode 10 is a real treat. We have our great friend, amazing skateboarder, and co host of the world famous podcast, "Nine Club," Mr. Kelly Hart. Here at Standard Issue, we love the Olympics - because who doesn't? But we especially love the modern pentathlon, which got underway at this summer's Games on August 8 and continues until the final day of the Olympics on Sunday 11. Jen had the joy of chatting to Team GB modern pentathlete Kerenza Bryson just before she headed out to Paris. Kerenza's hoping to add an Olympic medal to her haul from the European and World championships, so fingers crossed for that. In the meantime, you can hear Kerenza and Jen talking about being a woman of many talents, showcasing women's sport, and getting the best out of a skittish horse. We've all been there. Everything we do at Standard Issue is inspired by those that have come before us. This episode featuring Mikhayel Tesfaye is a testament of that. Once a student. Now a teacher. His journey is made up of the stories we truly enjoy. Wu Wear. Phat Farm. Trips back from Tokyo with duffle bags of goods, to supplying Japanese denim which would land as one of the most iconic Jay-Z bars we all know and love. Alot of game and knowledge in his years doing this. This is just part 1 for Mik. Enjoy...

Not gonna lie. It is kinda fun to touch base with our friends on here who are generally the quietest and most reserverd. As is the case with our guest for episode 7 of season 2, Mr. Ricky Li. The influence of native New Yorkers feels like it is becoming quite the norm this season, and so is the case with Ricky's upbringing. Like most kids growing up in the Lower East Side of New York, it's that early exposure to this world of skate, music, fashion that has formed the world of streewear. Rick was born into it, literally. A super rad episode from the kindest of individuals. From Vintage Kicks, to Flight Club NY, and Fight Club LA, to his latest venture; the beautifully curated vintage offering Tried and True, Rick discusses all of these incredible ventures he's been able to place his imprint upon over the years. Short, sweet. Thats all you get and need from someone as great as Rick. Enjoy...

We're honored to have him on here with us and hope yall enjoy the show. We're all born a lion...
Episode 5 of Season 2 we are honored to share the podcast with an absolute legend, Mr. Alyasha Owerka-Moore. We could of sat and rapped for 6 hours and it would of only slightly scratched the surface of all of the amazing contributions this extremely talented gentlemen has left on the world of skate, fashion, and beyond. From the Brooklyn banks to Venice. Shut, to Alpha. Droors and dub to Fiberops. This mans forgot more things than we'll ever know and it means the world to us he'd take the train up to LA from SD to share a glimpse of what his illustrious career has felt like. Without further ado…
Episode 4 is here. We are honored to have two individuals that do so much work behind the scenes in order to help brands like us have a chance to flourish online with our web shops. As amazing as their e comm work is, the editorial work equatable to that of some of the most beautiful photographic campaigns presented by the biggest luxury brands in the world. We present to you, Youngest, and Paul Sun of the infamous Social Trust. Through episode Paul takes on his photographic development and journey, his appointment only style curated studio shop in DTLA, to meeting his partner in life, and business and her amazing impact on Paul both personally, and professionally. These two mean the world to us and its an honor to share their story on this episode of Behind The Seams...

We are psyched to usher in another a second season of Behind The Seams. What a way to get it going with none other than an orignal JSP and Standard Issue supporter, Mr. Brocky Marciano. The vibe and layout is a bit switched up. However, think it gives the standard issue studio a little bit more relaxed aura to discuss Mr. Korsan's career in music, dot connecting, and all things comfortable, and cozy fashions. It's a great listen, and alot of game given. Brocks wearing sandals...

From the lowly F-bomb, all the way over to the spam-faced jizz clown end of the spectrum, we're big fans of a swear here on Standard Issue. But why is swearing considered offensive when the words don't really mean anything offensive? Dr Rebecca Roache, philosopher and senior lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London, was keen to get to the bottom of this topic, which she examines in her book, For F*ck's Sake: Why Swearing is Shocking, Rude and Fun.In this week's Chops, she joins Jen to chat about swearing in general, what makes anything offensive, the double standard when it comes to women and “industrial” language, and why “cunt” is The Worst Word. It's British Summer Time (almost)! What better way to celebrate than with some new music on the beach? In this week's podzine, Jen catches up with Jessie Maryon Davies, musical director and composer, and Hannah Jane Walker, librettist of new song cycle, Herring Girls: Greater Than We Are Alone, which kicks off the First Light Festival in Lowestoft this weekend. They talk about social history, the greatness of community choirs, and being (a bit) like Beyoncé. Standard Issue fave and much-lauded author Liz Hyder, is back to chat to Mick about her new novel The Illusions, which explores the crossover between the golden age of magic and early moving pictures, and about the women heavily involved in both but left in the shadows of history – until now. There's netball, tennis and more in this week's Jenny Off The Blocks. And what kind of parties is Hannah looking forward to as a Catholic pensioner? Find out in this week's Rated or Dated, as we watch Rosemary's Baby. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Shubbak Festival is the UK's largest biennial celebration of contemporary Arab culture, bringing new and unexpected voices together with established artists to London – and other parts of the UK. It returns for its seventh edition this summer, from June 23 to July 9, so Mickey got on the Zoom with its joint CEOs, Taghrid Choucair-Vizoso and Alia Alzougbi, to find out more. They chat about what to expect from this enormous celebration of Arab artists' creativity, innovation and diversity, as well as how it's hard *not* to programme women, why it's so important to share and celebrate Arab cultures across communities, and some of the challenges of putting together such an enormous, borders-busting festival.Check out the Shubbak programme at shubbak.co.uk – and keep your eyes peeled for a few Standard Issue faves.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Chief fire officer, Big Issue ambassador, psychologist, author, champion of dogs – there are legion reasons Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton is one of our favourite guests. And now she's gone and penned a book that's bang up Standard Issue's alley. The Gender Bias: The Barriers That Hold Women Back and How to Break Them explores the serious amount of glass – ceilings, cliffs, breadlines – thwarting women's potential and delaying equality being reached. So our Mick got on the Zoom to chat to Sab about gender bias, women biased against women, the modesty trap and the glass case of emotion trapping women. And dogs. There's quite a lot of dog chat.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Our Hannah might not seem like the most likely candidate for a chat about Valentine's Day, but when she found out Standard Issue fave Val McDermid was presenting Cupid Loves Eros, a Radio 4 programme exploring queer love poetry, she was on the Zoom like a ferret up a (too long) trouser leg. They talk about representations of love in literature, the interest in queer love, and the return of Karen Pirie, among other things.Presenters, former DJs, gut health aficionados and hosts of Know Your Sh!t, Lisa Macfarlane and Alana Macfarlane-Kempner, aka The Mac Twins, are breaking taboos with the new Channel 4 show. They join Mick to chat about all things gut health, and how they ended up as ‘chief guinea pigs' for King's College London's British Gut Project. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's full of good news from the world of women's sport – and some Tory ambition. Speaking of which, Liz Truss is back, and Mick's all for it. Find out why in the Bush Telegraph. The full series of Know Your Sh!t is available to watch now on All 4, and Cupid Loves Eros airs on Radio 4 from February 9th.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast.
