Send us a textFrankie and Kelly Maxwell stop by the show to discuss how the band came together, their father and his love of music, their new EP, Red Shelter, sobriety, and more. *****Shurr Jr is a family power trio that consists of a guitarist/vocalist, Nick Maxwell, Drums, Frankie Maxwell, and Kelly Maxwell on bass. The siblings' father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn't fall far from the tree. They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls. Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago. Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad... The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay."The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... He wanted to name a band or album "Red Shelter," but he passed away before he could make that happen, so the kids in Shurr Jr. decided to name that album as another tribute to him.Musically, they take elements of Pixies, Elliott Smith, Husker Du, Avett Brothers, the Replacements, and Title Fight. This is the new single/video, "Ink": https://youtu.be/u1-p5WtdQ9o?si=lEal3FveTCWIiMcz*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. On this episode we are joined by the Sioux Falls SD indie rock band Shurr Jr. In 2015, siblings Nick and Frankie began writing music and jamming together in their mother's garage, drawing inspiration from Elliott Smith, the Avett Brothers, Title Fight, and Charmer. At the time, their sister Kelly Maxwell was teaching herself to play guitar, often listening and vibing along to their creations. The trio's musical journey took on a deeper, more personal meaning after the loss of their father, Frank—an influential member of the Omaha, NE band Fifth of May. In honor of Frank's legacy, the siblings turned to music as a way to channel their grief and keep his spirit alive. The band's name, “Sure, Junior,” is a loving tribute to Frank's iconic catchphrase. Buckle up, listeners. It was only a matter of time before our paths crossed with Mel Robbins, one of the most respected experts on change and motivation in the zeitgeist, and today is that day. Known for being the host of the #1 ranking education podcast in the world, bringing deeply relatable topics, tactical advice, tools, and compelling conversations to her audiences, Jen and Amy spend today's hour diving into Mel's “Let Them” theory, which is taking the world by storm, already delivering instant peace and freedom in the lives and relationships of people putting it into practice. Together, they discuss: The difference between “Let Them” and “Let Me” Learning to release the white-knuckle grip we hold over other people's behavior (and other things beyond our control) Reframing disappointment to view it as a gift (yes, it's possible!) Repositioning self-worth inward, rather than leaving it dependent on others' opinions. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “For a lot of women, we spend so much time upstairs in our heads as people-pleasers and over-analyzers, over-thinking and ruminating, trying to get things perfect. That's the last place I should be, personally. I need to drop into my body and get out of my head.” – Mel Robbins “People reveal who they are and what they care about through their behavior. Ignore their words. Watch their behavior. Let people be who they are. Let them do what they're going to do. Focusing on them is not where your power is.” – Mel Robbins “The difference between ‘not my business' and ‘let them' is worlds apart. When you say, ‘not my business', you're scolding yourself. With, ‘let them', you're in the power position because you see what's happening and are choosing to allow it without allowing it. You're rising above it.” – Mel Robbins “There's something about learning that [people] aren't ever going to change but that doesn't mean your relationship can't change for the better. When you let them be who they are, you create space for acceptance, the whole energy shifts.” – Mel Robbins Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Demotivators - https://despair.com/collections/ Effin Birds on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/effinbirds/ Van Morrison - https://www.vanmorrison.com/ No Hard Feelings by the Avett Brothers - https://open.spotify.com/track/0bgQ1hQrpP6ScdBZlDfLE2 Foo Fighters - https://foofighters.com/ DePeche Mode - https://www.depechemode.com/ The Cure - https://www.thecure.com/ Taylor Swift - https://www.taylorswift.com/ The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage by Mel Robbins - https://amzn.to/427OHwu The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About by Mel Robbins - https://amzn.to/4hc53bE The Mel Robbins Podcast - https://www.melrobbins.com/podcast The Four Questions: For Henny Penny and Anybody with Stressful Thoughts by Byron Katie - https://amzn.to/3C7tKXT My Legacy Podcast - https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-my-legacy-podcast-255793246/ Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl - https://amzn.to/4ajbyaz Dr. Stuart Ablon - https://www.stuartablon.com/ The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson - https://amzn.to/3PCqxmi Guest's Links: Mel's website - https://www.melrobbins.com/ Mel's podcast - https://www.melrobbins.com/podcast Mel's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/melrobbins/ Mel's Twitter - https://x.com/melrobbins Mel's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/melrobbins Mel's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/melrobbins Mel's TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@melrobbins Connect with Jen! The new year arrived and “Auld Lang Syne” bubbled up to the top of playlists all over the land. There are so many versions of this classic, which speaks to the importance of remembering friends and happy times from years past, and it reminded me to pause and reflect on this series, which has featured a great many musical acquaintances and friends (and acquaintances who became friends) over a fairly wide span of time; Southern Songs and Stories began as a video documentary with Aaron Burdett (now in the band Steep Canyon Rangers) in 2015, and transitioned to a podcast in spring of 2017. So much has changed over this time, with both the artists profiled here as well as the podcast itself. In 2018, we partnered with the Osiris Media folks to share the series on their platform, as well as on the internet station Bluegrass Planet Radio, and later with public radio WNCW, where you can hear capsule versions of episodes on air. Thinking back to those early episodes, it is impossible not to feel the tug of nostalgia for that time -- it was an exciting beginning, full of hope for putting some of the music I loved onto the world stage of an emerging format, and a deep and rich period to experience and take part in the music scene in and around western North Carolina. I thought about David Childers after learning about his new collaboration with Abe Partridge, titled The Satan, You're a Liars. And so, to kick off 2025, here is a listen back to one of our first episodes on a musical hero to Abe Partridge, the Avett Brothers, and many, many more. (L to R) Joe Kendrick, David Childers and Dolph Ramseur at David's home after taping their interview 10-17-17 David Childers is a western North Carolina singer songwriter who has been a lawyer, a poet, a man who has always made music, and is also now a visual artist. We'll get to conversations from legendary producer Don Dixon, who worked with David again on his 2017 record Run Skeleton Run, and talk with his son, longtime band member and collaborator Robert Childers, as well as the head of Ramseur Records and Avett Brothers manager, Dolph Ramseur, plus Avett Brothers member Bob Crawford, and writer, musician and WNCW radio host Carol Rifkin. We'll also highlight David's music and the music that inspired him, and delve into many insights into Southern culture along the way. Songs heard in this episode:“Jesus Said” by Abe Partridge, from The Satan, You're a Liars“Johnny Got A Mohawk” by David Childers & The Mount Holly Hellcats, excerpt“Radio Moscow” by David Childers, from Run Skeleton Run, excerpt “Jesus Set Me Free” by David Childers, from Serpents Of Reformation, excerpt“It's Bad You Know” by R.L. We hope you can help spread awareness of what we are doing. It is as easy as telling a friend and following this podcast on your platform of choice, so easy! You can find us on Apple here, and Spotify here — hundreds more episodes await you. From there it takes just a moment to give us a top rating, and where it is an option, a review! It makes a great difference because the more top reviews and ratings we get, the more visible we become to everyone on those platforms, which means that more people just like you connect with artists like David Childers, Abe Partridge, and many more we have profiled that are at your fingertips. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks also to Jaclyn Anthony for producing the radio adaptations of this series on WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs — you can link to his music here. "Swept Away" Is this an emergency episode of the podcast? Kind of. And by kind of, I mean...yes. It is. It's actually quite urgent because art is at stake and without art, we have nothing. This show is about the current creative moment in an artist's life and on that front, this episode couldn't be more on the nose. My guest today on the show is currently starring in a Broadway production that, in spite of its massive critical praise, is set to shut down prematurely on December 29th. We have a lot to go over, but the thesis of the show today is we don't want this production to get Swept Away. Adrian Blake Enscoe is currently starring on Broadway in the musical Swept Away, which is based on the Avett Brothers' album Mignonette and written by John Logan. Centered around a group of sailors who have capsized while on a whale expedition, the show opened up to rave reviews from The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Beast, The Wrap and Deadline. So the question is, if the show has been crushing it, why is it closing early? Well, that's what we're here to talk about today. The New York-born Enscoe has been on the show before with his band Bandits On The Run, and he's a lovely guy and it's great to see him again, but this chat is a sobering reminder that those who create art need you to support it. www.sweptawaymusical.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG: @emberspodcast Bluelsky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

Send us a textIs Vera, the debut album by Phil and Tim Hanesroth (The Hanesroth Twins), really a debut? After all, they've won three GRAMMYs and have been nominated seven more times for their songwriting collaboration with Brandi Carlile. (They're the twins who flank her in concert live.) The twins' songs have been covered by Adele, Dolly Parton, and the Avett Brothers. So while this may be their first album as a duo, they've had excellent songwriting chops for a while.Had a great time talking about why it's important to not take the writing process too seriously, why the outdoors are so integral to creativity, and their uncanny ability to craft fully formed songs in their head before committing them to paper.
The show opens with Bianna Golodryga speaking to David Scheffer, former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, about the legal implications of the International Criminal Court's unprecedented arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes. Plus, Bianna interviews Dan Osborn, a union steamfitter and former Senate candidate from Nebraska on why working-class Americans abandoned democrats, and how to get more of them elected to government . Then, Christiane discusses the adaptation of Say Nothing to a hit series on Hulu and Disney Plus with author Patrick Radden Keefe, exploring the dark history of “The Troubles” of Northern Ireland. Afterwards, Bel Trew of The Independent joins the show to discuss the many restrictions on abortion rights showcased in her documentary The A Word. Later, Bianna talks to Seth and Scott Avett of The Avett Brothers and John Gallagher Jr. about their Broadway musical Swept Away. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In a world full of questions, unmet expectations, and doubt, it's natural to seek answers. Many sought guidance toward a promised land where uncertainties fade away. However, if that desire is inherent, why did it often feel so elusive? In this episode, the band plays songs by Matisyahu, The Avett Brothers, Tenille Townes, and Will Reagan.
On this episode we take a song by song deep dive into The Avett Brothers' I and Love and You to celebrate its 15th anniversary.

What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?'Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there for ever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. A little over 20 years ago, Rolling Stone magazine published its first list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. They did so because people were talking about the death of the album, probably in large part thanks to Napster and young teens downloading songs from limewire on the family computer and burning cd's with random songs. Rolling Stone has updated that list a few times since the original release, most recently just last December, 2023. According to them, Blue by Joahnie Mitchel came in at three, followed by the Beach Boy's Pet Sounds at number 2, and taking the top spot at number 1 was Marvin Gaye's “What's Going On”. I am not here to argue about what albums should have been on there or which one's they got wrong, though I feel I should mention not one Indigo Girls album made the list making one of your pastor's very sad. The list is quite arbitrary, mainly because it was simply ranked choice voting by a variety of artists, producers, and critics. I think many would argue that like beauty, good music lies in the ear of the listener. And while I agree, there are some things I think great music does to or for a person. Now I am just a pastor who played the Tuba for five years, so take this with a grain of salt, but for me Great music proclaims a truth that we experience in our lives. Through storytelling, the melody, or the art of its composition, It can tell us something that we need to know, a truth we might not have otherwise understood. On this Reformation Sunday we focus on music and the good it does in our lives and faith, because this year we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first Lutheran Hymnal. In 1524, Luther took four hymns he had written and four from his friend Paul Speratus to make what was called Acht-lie-der-buch, or in english the “Eight Songs Book”. It was nothing crazy to produce a hymnal, but Luther and the reformation as a whole changed the way the church engaged with music forever. Luther wanted songs to be written with simple words, words that everyone would know, not just the highly educated. And he wanted the music to be familiar, something people might already know. So he often borrowed popular folk tunes of the day and set lyrics to them that people would understand, making it easy to sing along with. This was revolutionary, because at the time the catholic mass was done entirely in Latin, most church goers didn't know the music, and therefore no one but the priests sang in worship. Luther's approach to music changed all of that. He wanted everyone to sing since that's how people would not only understand the gospel message, but because the music was catchy and familiar, the good news of Jesus Christ would always be on one's lips, praising God morning, noon, and night. He wrote on multiple occasions that next to the Word of God itself, music is the greatest treasure in this world. When done right, it helps one's heart, quiets and cheers the soul because it teaches the gospel and praises God. That's why Luther loved music. You see Luther suffered from terrible anxiety throughout much of his life. In his early years of being a monk, he would fall into these dark episodes of despair. He felt like God didn't love him, like God couldn't love him. He wasn't good enough, he didn't keep all the commandments like he should, and didn't do all the things the Bible says Christians should do. He writes about this feeling in one of those hymns from that first hymn book 500 years ago, saying “life had become a living hell, so firmly sin possessed me. My own good works availed me naught, no merit they attaining; my will against God's judgment fought, no hope for me remaining.” My guess is at one time or another, or maybe even right now, you've felt hopeless because you aren't good enough: not smart enough, not fit enough, not successful enough in the eyes of the world, and certainly not good enough in the eyes of God. You try so hard to get it right, to pray more, get less angry, be more generous, or even care about all the suffering in this world. And you may for a time, but you can never quite rid yourself of whatever it is that makes you feel like God could not and should not love you.But then Luther read again what we heard this morning from Romans 3: “No one is justified by what they do. We are justified, we are made right with God only by God's grace as a gift, through the work of Jesus Christ”. Later in that same hymn, Luther shares this good news from Jesus' perspective, “Your ransom, I myself will be; for you I strive and wrestle. For I am yours, your friend divine, and evermore you shall be mine.” In other words, Luther remembered that it's not what he says or does or how much money he pays the church or how many prayers he lifts up, none of that takes away his sin or puts him in the right relationship with God. Only Jesus does that by his work on the cross, taking our sin in exchange for his grace. Only a God who loves me more than I can fathom would do such a thing. And that's something worth singing about. Now there are plenty of songs that proclaim that truth, from ancient hymns to albums on that top 500 list. Yet, recently I heard or more like we heard a new song that shares the heart of the gospel, +Mark and I, I mean.In August, we went to an Avett Brothers concert together at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. A few weeks before the show, I reached out to a stranger selling her tickets on Facebook only to then check the family calendar and realize we were booked. On the day of the concert, the woman reached back out and said I could have the tickets, no cost, completely free. We canceled our plans, but couldn't find a sitter so short notice, so Katelyn graciously agreed to stay behind with Clive if I could get someone to go. And I know of no one who likes concerts more than Pastor Mark Havel. So we went and about halfway through, Scott and Seth, took the stage with nothing but an acoustic guitar and their voices. And they sang a new song. Each verse juxtaposes the many ways we go through life, whether we speak up or are silent, if we are willing or we are done. If we're courageous or cowards. All the verses go through a series of these conditions, but each one ends with proclaiming the truth “we are loved”. And the chorus goes, “Every stitch and seam, every wish and dream, even in tragedy, there lies divinity. Even as hope seems lost, it may be found again. I have felt alone, but I have never been.” Their voices filled the fieldhouse and in that moment, I believed them. It was as if they were telling me again for the first time, the heart of the gospel, that no matter what you do in this life, it does not earn you grace. You are loved, and nothing in this life can take that away from you. As the song came to a close, I turned to Mark and said “don't even think about it, I'm using that in a sermon first!”On this reformation Sunday, I invite you to sing, not just today but everyday. To lift your voice, your instrument, and praise God through the gift of music. Find a song, whether it's 500 years old or brand new, whether it's on the top 500 albums or not, find a song that proclaims the truth of the gospel, that no matter what, we are loved. And then sing that song every day over and over again, thanking God for the gift of grace and music. Amen.

This episode we talk with the ethereal Bailey Bigger about her new album "Resurrection Fern" and how she has grown and changed since her last album was released. Resurrection Fern explores vulnerability, nature, and growth, all delivered through Bigger's distinctive lens. Known for her enchanting melodies and impeccable lyricism, Bigger dives deep into themes of renewal, fragility, and the resilience found in the human spirit. Each track feels like a conversation with an old friend, guiding listeners through moments of self-discovery and connection. As a storyteller, she paints pictures that are as vivid as they are introspective, drawing on personal experiences and weaving them into universal truths. Her poetic approach to music, combined with a rich vocal presence, marks her as one of the most exciting new voices in today's music landscape. With this release, Bigger continues to prove why she's being hailed as a fresh voice for her generation. Her ability to channel complex emotions into beautifully simple yet profound songs sets her apart, and Resurrection Fern is a testament to her growth as an artist and storyteller. The 24 year old singer/songwriter/instrumentalist has collected back to back nominations at the Arkansas Country Music Awards, been named Songwriter of the Year in Memphis, won Audience-Favorite music video at Indie Film Fest, and has had multiple songs featured on TrueSouth on SEC Television. Bigger has traveled the country over the last four years, enchanting audiences with her siren song and classic American songwriting. She has shared stages and festival lineups with Sierra Ferrell, The Local Honeys, The Avett Brothers, and toured alongside Joe Purdy and Trampled by Turtles. Bailey's voice has graced the stages of Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Bluebird Cafe, Georgia Theater, and many festivals including FloydFest, Americanafest, and Memphis in May. Much inspired by her own Celtic heritage, folklore of the world surrounding her, and connection to the natural world, Bailey's new record, “Resurrection Fern,” (releasing October 25th) takes the listener on a journey through the four seasons, and the cycles of death that we, and the earth, face every year. Leaning into the mystery and lore of the unknown, human emotions, and the wild nature within all of us, “Resurrection Fern,” captures the magic that Bailey found within her years of tuning in deeper with the natural cycles, and the primal knowledge within. Rick Rubin and Cole Bennett, two cultural giants of our time. Rick Rubin has helped produce music for artists like: Run DMC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Johnny Cash, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Adele, Kesha, Lady Gaga, and the Avett Brothers. His experience takes him beyond classic music production genres. Beyond this, he wrote a book that became an instant hit and lead him to go on Joe Rogan to promote it and dissect it, namely "The Creative Act." Similarly, Cole Bennett has helped artists like: Lil Pump, Mask the Slump God, Lil Xan, Juice World, J. Cole, Eminem, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Jack Harlow, and Dr. Dre. Why the lists? Well, this shows you the scope of their cultural influence. Both Rick, as a music producer, and Cole, as a music video producer, have helped infuse our world with a particular vision of reality and value structure. The question for us is: is the Logos present in what they have to say? We argue, yes. Not only that, we find it an obligation to find where Jesus Christ is in their conversation and bring Him out. The 502s are an American indie folk band from Maitland, Florida formed by Eddie Isola. Their sound has been described as a "folk orchestra", and as a blend of roots, rock and bluegrass. As fiddle player for the Avett Brothers, Grammy-winning founderof The Duhks, accompanist for Mary Gauthier and as a session player, TaniaElizabeth has spent two decades shaping the arc of modern-day roots music. Sherefocuses the spotlight on her own music with Storm Season, a solo album whosesonic textures are as dynamic and diverse as the songwriter who created them. “I've always backed other people,” she says. “I'm really good at supportingother musicians and holding down the fort so they can shine, but I've rarelyhad anybody else hold that space for me. With Storm Season, I'm investing inmyself for the first time.” A longtime road warrior, Tania began recording Storm Season during the globalpandemic that brought her touring schedule to a standstill. It was a rare timeof rest for someone who'd been performing since the age of 9. Raised in asingle-parent household, Tania moved from Australia to Canada during her earlychildhood and began busking on the streets of Vancouver Island while still ingrade school. By 15 years old, Tania had launched her own record label andcompleted her first solo album: Something, a self-financed collection ofinstrumental songs funded by her busking profits. By 16, she had left school, completed a cross-country Canadian tour in partnership with Save The Children(a humanitarian organization dedicating to supporting victims of childtrafficking), and recorded her second album, This Side Up. By the time sheturned 18, she'd already performed her songs in venues across Australia and China. Looking for new horizons, Tania co-founded The Duhks, a genre-jumping rootsband whose debut album appeared in 2003. The Duhks quickly became one ofCanada's most decorated folk acts, earning a Grammy nomination and a Juno Awardduring Tania's tenure. She left the group's lineup in 2010 and began performingwith the celebrated folksinger Mary Gauthier. By 2013, she'd earned a permanentspot in the Avett Brothers' touring lineup, contributing heavily to Grammy-nominated releases like True Sadness along the way. On a record stacked with appearances by roots-music luminaries, it's Tania Elizabeth's star that shines the brightest. She writes honestly and poignantly about the bad weather in her life, ultimately finding comfort in her own resilience. Heartbreak, resolve, struggle, and vigilance are common themes, with tracks like “What You Need”unfolding like wake-up-calls for those who have yet to prepare for incomingstorms. Storm Season also soothes, though, balancing itsown urgency with the comforting salve of Tania's voice and the rootsy sweep ofher multi-layered arrangements. This is music that targets the heart as well asthe head. It's the latest chapter in a life story that's still being written. It's the sound of a lifelong musician who's making a return to centerstage, armed with the most compelling music of her career. On this week's show, we... toss the Maxell UDXLII into the Debts cassette deck & hit play on our 2024 Half-Time Mix Tape - a random sampling of tracks from some of our favorite albums of the year so far. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
In 2002, Ashley Capps took a gamble- he rented hundreds of acres in rural Tennessee and put on a music festival. Coming on the heels of the infamous Lollapalooza '99 and an unsuccessful festival at the same site two years earlier, few thought Ashley could pull it off. As you (and the 80,000 people who attended the festival this year) know, Ashley and his partners proved the doubters wrong and created one of the most iconic festivals in modern America. When you think of sibling harmony, some artists that come to mind include The Bee Gees, First Aid Kit, The Avett Brothers, and The Jacksons. But there's another factor that we tend to think about less — the non-verbal synergy that's part of the equation, too. Which brings us to the instrumental duo Hermanos Gutierrez, whose intertwined guitar lines are a trademark of their sound. In the case of “Low Sun,” we get into the darker side of their music.
Today's Song of the Day is “Love Of A Girl” from The Avett Brothers' album The Avett Brothers, out May 17.
